Differential Diagnosis Of Adhd And Bipolar Disorder : An Analogue Study, Sarah Yurinich
Differential Diagnosis Of Adhd And Bipolar Disorder : An Analogue Study, Sarah Yurinich
Honors Theses
Bipolar disorder (BD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) share an overlapping number of symptoms. These shared symptoms may result in the misdiagnosis or over diagnosis of these two disorders. The purpose of this study was to look at the diagnostic practices of clinicians and clinicians-in-training to see what diagnosis they would give to a hypothetical patient who presents with ambiguously ADHD and bipolar disorder symptoms. Clinicians and clinicians-in-training (N = 40) read two vignettes, one child and one adult, where the patient presented with both ADHD and BD overlapping symptoms, and then were asked to provide one primary DSM-IV diagnosis, …
Masculinity In The Virtual World Of Video Game : A Question Of Agency, Long Trinh
Masculinity In The Virtual World Of Video Game : A Question Of Agency, Long Trinh
Honors Theses
Masculinity is an understudied topic in video games. Traditional literature considered video game as a traditional media and focused mostly on video games content, thus contributed to the common myth that playing video games make people more violent. However, recent studies suggest that video game is distinctive compared to traditional media, and that violence is not the motivating factor in video games. This study involves a content analysis of 22 video game reviews and a non-participant observation of 4 gamers playing The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. The results suggest it is not violence, but rather agency that governs the dynamics of …
Power Distribution In The European Union, Dayton Steele
Power Distribution In The European Union, Dayton Steele
Honors Theses
The Treaty of Lisbon, the latest treaty governing law-making in the European Union (EU), was ratified in 2009 and goes fully into effect in 2014. This treaty, with its change to voting procedures in the Council of Ministers, claims to make decision-making in the EU more democratic and more efficient. Since the EU serves as an economic and political entity, we will assess these claims by comparing each member state's GDP and population to its power as modeled using the concept of a power index from the game theory literature. We will utilize the normalized Banzhaf index, the Shapley-Shubik index, …
The Embodied Cognition Of Resilience, Kelsey Mahler
The Embodied Cognition Of Resilience, Kelsey Mahler
Honors Theses
First impressions can impact our opinions and behaviors towards another person. The act of priming, though, can work to alter a person’s perceptions, and subsequent behaviors. Embodiment, the idea that the body is closely tied to the processing of social and emotional information, can result from priming. The current research seeks to answer several questions related to the importance of first impressions, judgments of sympathy and resilience, deep role categorizations, and the power of priming to prompt the embodied cognition of resilience. The results of the current research partially support the initial hypotheses that—when presented with information about a target …
A Comparison Of Mindfulness And Incremental Theory Based Interventions, Kelsey Greenfield
A Comparison Of Mindfulness And Incremental Theory Based Interventions, Kelsey Greenfield
Honors Theses
In only a span of 20 years, the prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased in the United States. Thirty five percent of adults and seventeen percent of children are obese. Every state has an obesity prevalence of over twenty percent (CDC, 2013). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. A person's weight and height are used to calculate BMI, which indicates level of body fatness that may lead to health problems (CDC, 2013). From the economy to healthcare, this weight trend has turned into a phenomenon that …
Potent Mutagens Have Positive And Negative Effects On Viral Fitness Of Reovirus In Vitro, Jennie Altman
Potent Mutagens Have Positive And Negative Effects On Viral Fitness Of Reovirus In Vitro, Jennie Altman
Honors Theses
Due to the inherently error-prone nature of RNA replication, mutations to genomes of RNA viruses occur frequently and accumulate. We hypothesized that RNA versions of nucleoside analogues that increase mutation rates in DNA could cause increases in the mutation rate of a model RNA virus, Reovirus, and decrease the fitness of the virus in vitro due to the accumulation of deleterious mutations. After conducting multiple passages of Reovirus in mouse L929 cells in the presence of these potential RNA mutagens in four separate trials, there were not only virus samples with the expected decreased infectivity, but surprisingly, samples with marked …
Presidential Debate Format And Perceptions Of Personality: Warmth Matters, Joseph B. Greener
Presidential Debate Format And Perceptions Of Personality: Warmth Matters, Joseph B. Greener
Honors Theses
Undergraduate students were asked to read or watch a portion of the second 1976 Presidential Debate between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Afterwards, subjects listed the four most memorable statements or moments from the debate. Although both groups listed content related moments, the Video group paid more attention to the personality of the candidates. Participants took a memory test where they matched quotes from the debate to Ford and Carter. While the initial hypothesis was that the Video group’s focus on the visual and auditory cues of the speaker would hinder their success on the memory test, subjects in the …
Trade Evolution And Exchange Market Pressures, Bradley Rotter
Trade Evolution And Exchange Market Pressures, Bradley Rotter
Honors Theses
This paper looks at the relationship between trade openness and an exchange rate volatility index called exchange market pressure. The theory behind the paper is that increasing trade flows between nations should reduce economic volatility, as it allows for the correct allocation of goods and services across borders. The results show a negative relationship between an increase in trade openness and volatility as measured by exchange market pressures. The empirical estimate is based on 20 OECD nations from 1992 to 2007. Although, trade shows some impact on volatility, most instability arises from systematic risks that are felt globally.
The Inner Workings Of The Dna Copying Nanomachine : Kinetic Studies Of Dna Polymerase I From The Thermophilic Bacterium Rhodothermus Marinus, Emily P. Kornberg
The Inner Workings Of The Dna Copying Nanomachine : Kinetic Studies Of Dna Polymerase I From The Thermophilic Bacterium Rhodothermus Marinus, Emily P. Kornberg
Honors Theses
DNA polymerase I from Rhodothermus marinus is a high-fidelity DNA polymerase capable of operating at high temperatures and incorporating 2´,3´-dideoxynucleotides. The R. marinus DNA Polymerase I active site contains an unusual proline in the middle of a mobile “O helix.” This proline residue is hypothesized to decrease the relative free energy of a kinetic checkpoint termed the ajar conformation, and thereby slow the incorporation of incorrect nucleotides. We aim to test the accuracy of a newly developed nucleotide incorporation model, in which the enzyme allows the template to interact with the bound dNTP in the ajar conformation, whether correct or …
Curing The Obesity Epidemic : The Government's Obligation To Regulate Food, Victoria Lyon
Curing The Obesity Epidemic : The Government's Obligation To Regulate Food, Victoria Lyon
Honors Theses
The first chapter demonstrates the impact of the obesity epidemic in the United States. The epidemic affects obese individual directly, and burdens all US citizens. The second chapter is an argument as to why the obesity epidemic should be addressed by government intervention. The US regulates risky substances such as consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana, and risky behaviors such as driving. This work explores why food is morally equal to other risky substances. The final chapter explores several food regulation policy options.
Generalization Of Expert Face Processing Takes Time, Karen Duan
Generalization Of Expert Face Processing Takes Time, Karen Duan
Honors Theses
Same race faces are recognized better than other race faces, and this other-race effect (ORE) can be explained by reduced holistic processing of other-race faces. Holistic processing is defined as a tendency to process all parts of a stimulus interactively as a whole. Previous studies found that experience can mediate ORE in holistic processing. The present study investigated whether quality or quantity of experience with the other-race better predicts holistic processing of other-race faces between Caucasian and Asian individuals. Contrary to what we expected, we did not find any correlation between experience with the other-race and the ORE in holistic …
Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate-Mediated Additions To Acetals, Nitrones, And Aminals, Chelsea Safran
Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate-Mediated Additions To Acetals, Nitrones, And Aminals, Chelsea Safran
Honors Theses
One-pot reactions were studied in order to develop procedures for the formation of important carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen bonds that are easily reproducible. In the presence of trimethylsilyl triflouromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf), Mukaiyama-aldol and aldol-like reactions occur in one-pot due to TMSOTf acting as a Lewis acid and silylating agent. A variety of reactions, including methoxyalkylation, were performed to form carbon-nitrogen bonds. Here, research involving TMSOTf-mediated additions to acetals, nitrones, and aminals will be discussed.
Difference Sets In Non-Abelian Groups Of Order 256, Taylor Applebaum
Difference Sets In Non-Abelian Groups Of Order 256, Taylor Applebaum
Honors Theses
This paper considers the problem of determining which of the 56092 groups of order 256 contain (256; 120; 56; 64) difference sets. John Dillon at the National Security Agency communicated 724 groups which were still open as of August 2012. In this paper, we present a construction method for groups containing a normal subgroup isomorphic to Z4 Z4 Z2 . This construction method was able to produce difference sets in 643 of the 649 unsolved groups with the correct normal subgroup. These constructions elimated approximately 90% of the open cases, leaving 81 remaining unsolved groups.
Fashion Adoption Behaviors Of Women In Manhattan Related To Spring 2012 Apparel Fashion Trends, Nicole Powell
Fashion Adoption Behaviors Of Women In Manhattan Related To Spring 2012 Apparel Fashion Trends, Nicole Powell
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to look at the spring trends for 2012 and then compare them that to what the women of Manhattan are actually wearing, during the same season. I wanted to understand how women were adopting the fashion trends from Spring 2012 and turning them into part of their own self-identified style. I went on a research trip to New York City from May 6th to May 12th and spent a great deal of time, on the streets, observing and taking pictures of what real Manhattan women are wearing. For this project, I focused on four …

Following The Glory Cloud: Bethel Church & Maintenance Of The Revival Church, Jenny Edwards
Honors Theses
This departmental honors project examines the effects of routinization of charisma upon Bethel Church in Redding, California. As a movement related to both the Assemblies of God and the Toronto Blessing of the 1990s, Bethel has begun to declare an eternal revival based in their city. To prevent the movement from routinizing and dissipating, the leadership has instituted several structures within the church. The overall corporate hierarchy, the recent policy of inclusion within the hierarchy regardless of gender, the involvement of the congregation in performing miraculous acts, and the discipleship of future generations of participants and leaders through established ministry …
Not Extinct: A Year In The Life Of The American Chesnut, Kristen Julina Stanfill
Not Extinct: A Year In The Life Of The American Chesnut, Kristen Julina Stanfill
Honors Theses
After the widespread infection of the American chestnut tree (Castanea dentata) due to the fungus Cryphonectria parasitica the species was nearly brought to extinction and now merely exists as stump sprouts. Since the fungus infects the bark of the tree but not the root systems new shoots are able to emerge and grow before once again being girdled by the fungus. Cryphonectria parasitica is believed to have been brought to America on Asian species of chestnut which possess resistance to the blight caused by the fungus. It is the plan of the American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) to integrate the genes …

Treatment Of Food Selectivity In Children With Autism: A Review Of Literature And Introduction To Holistic Treatment Approach, Tara Swodzinski
Treatment Of Food Selectivity In Children With Autism: A Review Of Literature And Introduction To Holistic Treatment Approach, Tara Swodzinski
Honors Theses
Food selectivity is a problem in many of the lives of children with autism. Limited food repertoires can negatively affect nutritional status and the quality of life for these children and their families. The precise cause of this food selectivity is unknown although a number of reasons have been posited. This inability to pinpoint an exact cause has lead to a debate between researchers about whether behavioral or physiological issues are to blame. This paper first explores both of these options. Then, a new clinical program at WMU OT Unified Clinics is described that focuses on a holistic approach used …
White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson
White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson
Honors Theses
This study tells the story of white female criminals and addresses the problem of the white female criminality and the resulting reaction of the patriarchal society in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War, specifically the years 1861-1864. During the Civil War, white female criminality became a daily occurrence because of the wartime conditions in Richmond, such as inflation and overpopulation. Because of the established patriarchal society and the lack of emphasis on the women's rights movement in the South, the female involvement in crime during the war was extremely shocking to the male driven society. The judicial system struggled with …
Self-Presentation Symbols And Their Effect On Heroic And Villainous Drive, Amelia Knight
Self-Presentation Symbols And Their Effect On Heroic And Villainous Drive, Amelia Knight
Honors Theses
There is a significant body of research reflecting that human beings are drawn to hero stories. This fascination stems from a basic human need for hope and the inspiration to achieve greatness. Most hero stories, especially fictional ones, contain symbolically embedded information, which helps us to mentally represent particular heroes. For example, when asked to visualize Batman and Superman two distinct images come to mind: Batman’s mask and Superman’s cape. In the real world, these symbols are a little more obscure, like a Policeman’s badge or a Fireman’s hat. Symbols are important for the understanding of viewers, but they can …
The Eichler-Selberg Trace Formula For Level-One Hecke Operators, Alex Barron
The Eichler-Selberg Trace Formula For Level-One Hecke Operators, Alex Barron
Honors Theses
This paper explains the steps involved in the proof of the Eichler-Selberg Trace Formula for Hecke operators of level one. It is based on an appendix in Serge Lang's Introduction to Modular Forms written by Don Zagier, though I also draw heavily from sections of Toshitsune Miyake's Modular Forms and Xueli Wang's and Dingyi Pei's Modular Forms with Integral and Half-Integral Weights.
Section 2 summarizes the necessary background in the theory of modular forms. The material covered here is standard, so I've left out most of the details and proofs. Most of the section is based on Chapter VII of …
Investigating The Effects Of Bag3 Knockdown On The Cytotoxicity Of The Anticancer Drug Laromustine, Kayla Gross
Investigating The Effects Of Bag3 Knockdown On The Cytotoxicity Of The Anticancer Drug Laromustine, Kayla Gross
Honors Theses
Laromustine is a sulfonylhydrazine anticancer prodrug whose cytotoxicity results from the formation of interstrand cross-links caused by the synergistic action of co- generated 2-chloroethylating and carbamoylating species. The cytotoxic activities of Laromustine involve the induction of apoptosis. Described herein is an investigation into this drug’s effects on apoptotic gene expression in HL-60 cells using qRT-PCR. Significant changes in the expression levels of 13 genes were observed, most dramatically in the upregulation of the bcl2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3) gene. Given the pro-survival role of BAG3 in the cell, this investigation sought to decrease BAG3 mRNA levels in HL-60 cells using transient …
Les Contes De Fées Oubliés: Vision D'Un Monde Plus Égal, Deborah Amato
Les Contes De Fées Oubliés: Vision D'Un Monde Plus Égal, Deborah Amato
Honors Theses
The American Rifled Musket: Technical Revolution Or Tactical Redundancy?, Alexandre F. Caillot
The American Rifled Musket: Technical Revolution Or Tactical Redundancy?, Alexandre F. Caillot
Honors Theses
The German soldier and military writer Freiherr von Bülow (1755-1816) once said that tactics were “the science of movements which are made in the presence of the enemy, that is, within his view, and within reach of his artillery.” This viewpoint, which he espoused in his seminal text Spirit of the System of Modern War (published in German in 1799), was representative of principles that would hold dominion over much of 19th-century-military thought. However, the 1850s was hardly a time of intellectual stagnation in which innovation lacked amongst the military theorists of Europe. Indeed, it was a period of discovery …
L’Autre De Montaigne: Vers Une Vision Tolérante De Nos Perceptions, Brita L. Midness
L’Autre De Montaigne: Vers Une Vision Tolérante De Nos Perceptions, Brita L. Midness
Honors Theses
