Honors Theses
Undertaking this thesis project was a task I was determined to fulfill with the upmost enthusiasm, positivity, and patience. When first deciding the topic of my research, I started with a list of criteria that had to be met: personal interest in the matter, hands on work with people and organizations within Oxford, and a way for me to impact the Oxford community for the better. Choosing to research college students recycling attitudes and behaviors both on and off campus and creating an integrated marketing campaign to raise awareness combined not only information accumulated through my academic years at Ole …
A Comparison Of Mitragyna Speciosa And Mitragynine Against Opioids On Thermal Nociception In Rats, Catherine Criddle
A Comparison Of Mitragyna Speciosa And Mitragynine Against Opioids On Thermal Nociception In Rats, Catherine Criddle
Honors Theses
The purpose of this experiment is to compare Mitragyna speciosa (M. speciosa) and its active component, mitragynine, a known µ-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist, against well-known and commonly abused opioids, morphine and oxycodone. Another goal of this research is to determine if these compounds are also active when administered orally as is typical in human users. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered M. speciosa and mitragynine both intraperitoneally (IP) and orally and their antinociceptive effects were evaluated on the hotplate. Mitragynine exhibited antinociceptive effects similar to oxycodone when administered both IP and orally. M. speciosa exhibited a trend towards antinociceptive effects when …
Unemployment Insurance In A Post-2008 America: Lessons From Chile, Channing Lansdell
Unemployment Insurance In A Post-2008 America: Lessons From Chile, Channing Lansdell
Honors Theses
Unemployment Insurance (UI), in its many forms, has historically been a cornerstone of developed countries' social policy. However, since the financial crisis and following recession in 2008, the American schema of UI has experienced great strain and scrutiny. This undergraduate thesis explores the detailed intricacies of the United States's approach to UI in a post-2008 America, and looks to the Chilean Unemployment Insurance system as a source of potential reform ideas. The paper details the current operations and conceptual underpinnings of the two programs through in-depth case studies, and offers trans-national suggestions for reform. In the case studies, I explain …

An Investigation Into The Synthesis Of A Four-Armed Diamino Swallowtail, Christopher Carter Barnett
An Investigation Into The Synthesis Of A Four-Armed Diamino Swallowtail, Christopher Carter Barnett
Honors Theses
Perylenebisimides (PBIs) complex with quadruplex DNA and may influence the formation of telomeres. PBIs with amine groups are ionized at neutral pH and therefore soluble in water [1]. Swallowtails are long alkyl chains usually attached to PBIs to inhibit self-aggregation by pi-stacking [2]. Past attempts to create a PBI with swallowtails containing extra nitrogens were unsuccessful due to purification issues and methylene connectors. The purpose of this research is to investigate the synthesis of a diamino swallowtail with a methine connector. The first step is to create 1,3-bis(dibenzylamino)propan-2-one by way of an SN2 substitution reaction using 1,3-dichloroacetone and dibenzylamine [3]. …
Hart Or Dworkin: Who Better Illuminates The Nature Of International Law?, Colton V. Acosta
Hart Or Dworkin: Who Better Illuminates The Nature Of International Law?, Colton V. Acosta
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore two legal theorists' conceptions of law and adjudication and then to use those conceptions to analyze which conception better illuminates the nature of international law. Hart thinks that a mature legal system is composed of primary and secondary rules. For Hart, whether a legal system exists is a matter of value-neutral social fact; a legal system is unified by formal criteria of validity that constitute the fundamental rule of the system. Law in no way relies on moral principles. Hart's theory for international law culminates in viewing international law as decidedly law, …

Revisiting The Ghosts Of Vatican Ii: Gender In Catholic Horror Cinema Of The American 60s And 70s, Currie D. Mckinley
Honors Theses
This thesis contextualizes 1960s and 1970s American horror films against the historical backdrop of Vatican II with the intent of discovering how the texts, reception, and legacies of the films could illuminate the gender politics of the various changes implemented over the course of Vatican II. The first chapter analyzes the text of Rosemary's Baby as a metaphor for restrictive policies on birth control on the part of the post-Vatican II papacy. The second chapter considers the implications of disagreements between the author and director of The Exorcist with regard to how different individuals wanted the Catholic Church to present …

The use of a performance mouthpiece may cause notable performance changes in an isometric mid-thigh clean pull (iMTCP) due to altered muscular force production. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of wearing various mouthpieces coupled with a clenching of the jaw on iMTCP force production. Three recreationally trained college-aged males (Age: 26.67 ± 2.89) volunteered to participate in three testing sessions separated by one week each. In the three sessions, the subject performed repetitions of an iMTCP under the following conditions: performance mouthpiece with jaw clenched (PMP-JC), performance mouthpiece with no clench (PMP-NC), traditional mouthpiece with …
Investigating The Effects Of Alternative Footwear On Balance, David S. May
Investigating The Effects Of Alternative Footwear On Balance, David S. May
Honors Theses
Falls are one of the leading causes of injuries and unintentional deaths in the United States, with 27,800 fatalities attributed to falls in 2012 (National Safety Council, 2014). With two thirds of our body mass located two thirds of our body height above the ground, humans require constant work from balance control systems to prevent these falls (Winter, 1995). Because shoes can alter somatosensory input from the mechanoreceptors on the bottom of the foot and affect these balance control systems (Menant et al, 2008), they must be taken into account when looking into the causes of falls. Traditional footwear designs …
Modelling Global Climate Variables With Cellular Automata Networks, David Robinson
Modelling Global Climate Variables With Cellular Automata Networks, David Robinson
Honors Theses
Cellular automata are discrete models that can be used to simulate many physical systems. Cellular automata have been used to model gas diffusion, different types of chemical reactions, population growth, and land use change over time. Recent research into cellular automata networks has shown that if sparse long range connections are added to a cellular automata, then it will exhibit properties of complex networks. Furthermore, research into modeling climate systems has shown that modeling the global climate as a complex network can be used to predict individual climate variables. In this work we attempt to connect these ideas by simulating …
Optimization: A Perspective On Improving An Ethylbenzene Production Design, Derrick C. Marchant
Optimization: A Perspective On Improving An Ethylbenzene Production Design, Derrick C. Marchant
Honors Theses
The goal of optimization in a chemical process or system involves improving an existing design or a combination of devices. In the case of an established process such as the ethylbenzene production process investigated here, the optimization involves improving an established process and choosing the best available case within a set of constraints that also considers maximizing the economic bottom line. An objective function must be selected for an optimization problem which defines the achievable goal. The objective function of the optimization process presented here is to minimize the estimated annual operating cost (EAOC). An EAOC takes in to account …
County Chairs Speak Out: How Mississippi's County Party Organizations Connect With Voters, Phillip C. Waller
County Chairs Speak Out: How Mississippi's County Party Organizations Connect With Voters, Phillip C. Waller
Honors Theses
This paper includes the results of a qualitative study of 11 Mississippi county party chairs interviewed about their role in the state and how that role has been affected by redistricting. I highlight their comments on their perceived roles, organizational purpose, voter outreach strategies, competition, voter turnout and state and county relationships. Though I started my project hoping to focus on the effects of redistricting on county party organizations' outreach to voters, only 3 of the 11 county chairs I interviewed significantly changed their actions after the 2011 redistricting cycle. The only county chairs who mentioned major changes in their …

Initial Breakdown Pulses In Lightning Flashes, Emily Morgan Smith
Initial Breakdown Pulses In Lightning Flashes, Emily Morgan Smith
Honors Theses
Initial Breakdown (IB) pulses in lightning flashes have been observed since 1937. Using two sensor arrays to determine the location and amplitude of IB pulses, this study examines the largest IB pulse in 55 flashes with 23 pulses from intracloud (IC) flashes and 32 pulses from cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes. The two goals of this project were (1) to compare the range-normalized amplitude of the largest IB pulse to its altitude, duration, and timing within each flash, and (2) to characterize the shapes of the IB pulses. Since all lightning flashes seem to begin with IB pulses, this study is aimed …
Apartheid In France: Galvanization Of Political Concern For The Role Of Ethnic Identities In French Society, Francesca Talley Diggs
Apartheid In France: Galvanization Of Political Concern For The Role Of Ethnic Identities In French Society, Francesca Talley Diggs
Honors Theses
The French state's colorblind policy prescription is the base of a contentious, current debate over whether or not the government should acknowledge ethnic and racial components of its citizens and collect such data from minority groups. An increasingly colorful population presents new questions to the framework of French identity, legally blind to ethnicity, and tests the durability of the French model. Has the role of ethnic identity in France become a legitimate political concern under President Hollande's administration despite legislation that outlaws ethnic data collection? Is the illegality of ethnic statistics detrimental to combatting discrimination and social fragmentation in France? …
Optimization Of An Ethylbenzene Process, Garrison Padgett Morgan
Optimization Of An Ethylbenzene Process, Garrison Padgett Morgan
Honors Theses
In industry, chemical plants should be running at optimal performance in order to maximize profit. However, this is frequently not the case. Optimization is the process of improving an existing situation, device, or, in the case of chemical engineers, a chemical process. Furthermore, there are numerous strategies to optimize a chemical process, and it is up to the engineer to decide what to change in order to make the optimization worthwhile. Last semester, I was able to show my knowledge of optimization by applying changes to an existing ethylbenzene producing plant. I simulated the base case for this plant and …

The Synthesis Of Arginine-Based Heterocyclic Amines, Andrew Stewart
The Synthesis Of Arginine-Based Heterocyclic Amines, Andrew Stewart
Honors Theses
Heterocyclic Amines (HCAs) are a group of mutagenic and caricinogenic chemicals found in muscle meat after grilling, frying, or broiling. Research studies show that very low amounts of HCAs are created from creatin(in)e reacting with another amino acid at temperatures greater than 200 C. Other studies show that plant-based arginine can substitute for creatin(in)e forming a new class of mutagenic HCAs, but also in low yields. We attempted to develop a direct, higher yielding method of producing these arginine-HCAs based on a procedure previously used to synthesize creatine-HCAs. With greater amounts of arginine-HCAs, chemical characterization and toxicity assessment could be …
The Identity And Role Of The Gift-Giving Spirit In Numbers 11, Jeanmark Kessler
The Identity And Role Of The Gift-Giving Spirit In Numbers 11, Jeanmark Kessler
Honors Theses
Current scholarship analyzes spiritual gifts predominantly from Acts 2, Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4. With the assumption that the actions of the Spirit are constant and persistent throughout Scripture, this study develops an Old Testament perspective on the Spirit's identity and role as gift-giver. This exegetical research investigates Numbers 11:16-29 as the key passage, where the Holy Spirit bestows His gifts upon Israel's leaders. In addition, the valid connections between Numbers 11 and 2 Kings 2 provide a broader and more consistent contextual interpretations of the identity and role of the Holy Spirit within the Old Testament.
Hydroxyl Number Determination Of Dendritic Polyols Utilizing Nir Spectroscopy, Seth Stacey
Hydroxyl Number Determination Of Dendritic Polyols Utilizing Nir Spectroscopy, Seth Stacey
Honors Theses
The goal of this project was to investigate the use of NIR-spectroscopy to quantify the number of OH functional groups attached to poly(amido amine) or PAMAM dendrimers in a manner that is quick, cost effective and easily reproducible. Obtaining the approximate number of hydroxyl functional groups (OH#) in a dendrimer is crucial in determining what role it can play in bonding and reactivity to other molecules. NIR-spectroscopy has the potential to allow for the recovery of the sample or at least to minimize the amount needed for analysis while providing an accurate determination of the OH# of a dendrimer.
Exposure To Narratives And Social Reasoning, Cassandra Chlevin
Exposure To Narratives And Social Reasoning, Cassandra Chlevin
Honors Theses
This study drew predominantly from previous work on the relationships of narrative and non-narrative texts with empathy and social reasoning. It has been posited that fiction -- due to the parallels between narrative texts and the social world -- may help readers maintain if not cultivate their social skills, whereas readers of non-narrative material may not have this benefit. This project attempted to both replicate and extend this pattern in a Seventh-day Adventist Christian sample by using instruments employed in previous research as well as a set of Bible-based instruments. Correlational analysis and nested linear regression were used to examine …

Equine Misbehavior And Its Relationship To Temperament And Rider Induced Stress, Taylor Huffman
Honors Theses
The goal of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between horse temperament and incidence of misbehavior due to the stress of being ridden by riders with a wide range of ability during the course of a summer camp session (9 weeks). It was hypothesized that horses with a social or aloof temperament would be able to adjust with more ease, while those with a fearful or challenging temperament would have a higher incidence of misbehavior. Each horse was evaluated for temperament at the beginning of the summer camp season. In the following weeks every rider was …
The Story Which He Never Stops Telling Himself: Autobiography, Narrative Community, And The Deconstruction Of Selfhood In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Melodie Roschman
The Story Which He Never Stops Telling Himself: Autobiography, Narrative Community, And The Deconstruction Of Selfhood In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Melodie Roschman
Honors Theses
This paper examines narrative, biography, and selfhood in Virginia Woolf's The Waves (1931). The novel, a "play-poem," follows six friends' monologues from childhood to death. I analyze aspiring writer Bernard from his childhood of telling stories about companions to his inability to narrate his autobiography, arguing that he fails because he has no self to narrate. Referencing Jacques Derrida's Of Grammatology's (1974) theory of the deconstructed self identifiable only in conversation, I argue that Bernard destroys his identity by silencing his friends and becoming the sole speaker; Woolf's biographical theory thereby establishes the communal self, prefiguring tenets of postmodern philosophy.
Discourse And Narrative: Creating Gender Control In Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Charles Lee
Discourse And Narrative: Creating Gender Control In Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Charles Lee
Honors Theses
Junot Diaz's Pulitzer-Prize-Winning 2007 novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao explores Dominican masculinity through narrator Yunior de Las Casas's portrayal of protagonist Oscar de Leon's family history. Yunior's perceived virility shapes his understanding of masculinity, which he stresses through the novel's plot and structure. This analysis considers how Yunior constructs Dominican masculinity through his narrative by marginalizing and emasculating passive character such as Oscar. I argue that Yunior's narrative closely links definition of masculinity and power as he strives to dominate passive characters in order to assert his virility as the "best" method for being a Dominican man.
The Transgenerational Effect Of Substance Abuse, Subira Brown
The Transgenerational Effect Of Substance Abuse, Subira Brown
Honors Theses
Using a survey conducted among college students at Andrews University, this study focused on substance use and sexual behaviors of students and the presence of familial substance use problems. Analysis indicated a significant association between substance use problems of fathers and their children's substance use. There was a stronger statistical association between father's substance use problems and male children's alcohol use. In addition there was a significant relationship between grandparents substance use and youth sexual behavior for both genders. There is a need for further analysis of this study.
A Study In Red: The Codification And Practical Application Of A Copyediting Procedure, Nathan Berglund
A Study In Red: The Codification And Practical Application Of A Copyediting Procedure, Nathan Berglund
Honors Theses
Editing is an integral part of publishing professional-level writing, but editing -- specifically copyediting -- can be very subjective, relying on the copyeditor's best judgment. For novice editors such as myself, this responsibility can be intimidating. For this research project, I formulated and tested a step-by-step copyediting procedure aimed at alleviating these jitters. After reading copyediting guides and interviewing four active copyeditors, I developed a procedure. I then tested that procedure on Timothy Huck's 115-page manuscript, The Lights of the Arno: A Novel. I conclude that even with a standardized editing methodology, editors will always need to rely on their …
Edward Snowden, Criminal Or Patriot: Media Coverage Of National Security Agency Document Leaks, Joyce M. Yoon
Edward Snowden, Criminal Or Patriot: Media Coverage Of National Security Agency Document Leaks, Joyce M. Yoon
Honors Theses
Kenneth Burke's dramatic pentad was used to analyze Edward Snowden's National Security Agency (NSA) document leaks from June 5, 2013 through October 1, 2013 as published in the New York Times (NYT) and the Guardian. The articles were coded by newspaper, headline, reporting journalist, page prominence, word count, publication date, and tone of stories. Content analysis revealed that there was significant difference in coverage of Snowden: the Guardian utilized the word "swhistleblower"s extensively in a positive way while negative words like "leaker" drove NYT coverage of Snowden. Both papers overlap in the identification of Snowden's actions as one of the …
