Making Marriages Work: Common Factors Of Marriage Theories, Jilynn Leeuw
Making Marriages Work: Common Factors Of Marriage Theories, Jilynn Leeuw
Honors Theses
Divorce is very common in the United States today; an alarming 40 to 50 percent of marriages end in divorce (American Psychological Association, 2015). In response to this, there are many theories and reading materials saying they can help prevent divorce or help couples obtain a successful marriage. This thesis examines five different marriage theories and the factors the authors say can help prevent a divorce or factors that lead to a successful marriage. It examines Marital Enhancement through Cognitive Self-Disclosure by Edward Waring, The Triangular Theory of Love by Robert Sternberg, John Gottman’s Gottman Method Couple Therapy, The Five …

Importance Of Preserving History: A Conservation Of An Edwardian Wedding Dress, Brittany Aris
Honors Theses
The Importance of Preserving History: The Conservation of an Edwardian Wedding Dress
This thesis concentrates on the significance of recorded history, and the importance of conserving artifacts such as an Edwardian wedding dress. Such treasured pieces contribute to our perception of the past, not only as artifacts but as an insight into how, why, and by whom, they were created.
The Edwardian period is so important in women’s fashion because it was such a short-lived era. The socio-economic times that preceded the Edwardian era, such as the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era, all had profound impacts which helped influence …
An Analysis Of Free-Will, Matthew Campbell
An Analysis Of Free-Will, Matthew Campbell
Honors Theses
The following paper is a broad analysis of the concept of free-will. Free-will can be defined as having the ability to act outside of necessity, such that one can be the ultimate author and initiator of their actions and decisions. Stated differently, possessing free-will allows an individual to be held accountable for their behaviors, because those behaviors are the result of something controllable within the individual, rather than something external to the individual and beyond their control.
A belief in free-will is widely assumed, for we hold individuals both legally and morally accountable for their actions. Nevertheless, it remains a …

Habitat Suitability Study Of Parcel In Gourdneck State Game Area For Downy Woodpeckers, Emma Fojtik
Honors Theses
This study examines the habitat suitability for Downy woodpecker for a parcel of land in Gourdneck State Game Area, Portage, Michigan. Land within the State Game Area has undergone habitat restoration from forest and shrub to savanna and prairie, intentionally excluding two parcels directly north of the restoration. This study took place on one of the excluded parcels. Using the Habitat Suitability Index Model produced by the Fish and Wildlife Service, basal area and number of snags within the study site were measured to determine suitability of the study site for Downy woodpeckers. Ten-1/10th acre sample plots were randomly chosen …
Economic Impacts Of The Fifa World Cup In Developing Countries, Mirele Matsuoka De Aragao
Economic Impacts Of The Fifa World Cup In Developing Countries, Mirele Matsuoka De Aragao
Honors Theses
Hosting mega events, which have traditionally been a privilege of developed nations, became an attainable goal for developing countries starting in 2008. This might seem to be a positive step, but there are speculations concerning the real benefits and expenses those games generate. The aim of this thesis is to investigate if it is recommendable for a developing country to host a World Cup. This question is answered through an analysis of the two previous World Cups in South Africa (2010) and Brazil (2014). The research involves comparing before and after data for both countries on government expenditure, labor market, …
Unsteady Nasalance Traces Among Sustained Vowels In Typical Adult Speakers: Prevalence & Potential Causes, Catherine Hearit
Unsteady Nasalance Traces Among Sustained Vowels In Typical Adult Speakers: Prevalence & Potential Causes, Catherine Hearit
Honors Theses
Background. Vowels are a commonly used stimulus for evaluating speech resonance because hypernasality is best detected in vowel sounds. It was observed that steady-state sustained vowels show considerable within sample nasalance variance, although nasalance is expected to be stable for this speech target.
Purpose. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the prevalence of variability among normal speakers in steady state vowel nasalance traces and to determine the variables that predict variability.
Methods: Sixty-one participants aged 18 through 30 years were recruited. All participants were lifelong residents of the lower peninsula of Michigan with normal hearing sensitivity and no …

Determining The Photometric Capabilities Of The Ctio 0.9-M Telescope, Cameron Clarke
Determining The Photometric Capabilities Of The Ctio 0.9-M Telescope, Cameron Clarke
Honors Theses
Exoplanet detections are becoming more and more frequent as our ability to detect transits and Doppler shifted stellar spectra improves. Here, we report on eight observing nights at the SMARTS 0.9m telescope in Chile at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), covering 13 nearby stars in the range of 11th to 14th visual magnitude. We used the defocus method to spread the point spread function (PSF) of the star across a larger portion of the CCD to achieve longer exposure times yielding a higher signal to noise ratio and a higher amount of data every night as less time was …
Joseph Harkins' Senior Recital: An Exploration Of Jazz And Popular Music, Joseph Harkins
Joseph Harkins' Senior Recital: An Exploration Of Jazz And Popular Music, Joseph Harkins
Honors Theses
This thesisrecital represents several years of musical and personal growth during my time as a jazz studies and piano student at Western Michigan University. The aim of this thesis was to take popular songs from the singersongwriter movement and infuse them with stylistic elements of jazz, without compromising the integrity of either genre. The entire program features original arrangements and an original composition.
Each piece can distinctly stand alone; each brings elements of two styles that were once widely popular; together they represent characteristics of my own personal style. The research and arranging process for each selection further inspired me …

Root Cover Pebbling On Graphs, Claire A. Sonneborn
Root Cover Pebbling On Graphs, Claire A. Sonneborn
Honors Theses
Consider a graph, G, with pebbles on its vertices. A pebbling move is defined to be the removal of two pebbles from one vertex and the addition of one pebble to an adjacent vertex. The cover pebbling number of a graph, γ(G), is the minimum number of pebbles such that, given any configuration of γ(G) pebbles on the vertices of G, pebbling moves can be used to place one pebble on each vertex of G. We define the root vertex of a graph and fix an initial configuration of pebbles on G where we place all pebbles on the root …

The State Of El Salvador: Human Rights And Violence In The Post War Era, Christine Caldera
Honors Theses
During the Salvadoran Civil War (1979-1992), the government of El Salvador knowingly used forms of political violence such as disappearances and torture against the political opposition and other innocent civilians, including women and children. With the signing of the Peace Accords in 1992, El Salvador has since transitioned from an authoritarian regime to a democracy. This project focuses on how the change in regime type influenced the level of repression and respect for human rights in El Salvador. The research analyzes two conflict resolution mechanisms, the Peace Accords and Truth Commission, and the implementation of democratic practices such as elections …
Cocoa And Chocolate: Deconstructing The Development Paradigm In Cameroon, Chelsea Vanhook
Cocoa And Chocolate: Deconstructing The Development Paradigm In Cameroon, Chelsea Vanhook
Honors Theses
This project focuses specifically on the neo-liberal economic iteration of international development. Neo-liberalism is the idea that the deregulation of the private sector and expansion of free trade will lead to growth in undeveloped countries, which will effectively end poverty and increase the standard of living. My ethnography in Southwest Cameroon, however, shows that the experience and embodiment of development takes on a new understanding at the local, daily level. Exploring the paradox of cocoa and chocolate in Cameroon, I find that while the average Cameroonian is able to grow cocoa, he/she is unable to afford chocolate. This context calls …

In 2009, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) revolutionized academic standards, providing a format adopted by states across America that focused on raising Math and English Language Arts standards as preparation for colleges and careers. In conjunction with the adoption and implementation of the CCSS across the United States, Catholic schools have worked towards the strengthening and advancement of their own educational systems. This thesis first examines the background of the CCSS, including implementation and professional development, as well as the opposition regarding the standards. The paper presents an overview of the history of academic standards in Catholic education and …
Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 5 Mediates Metastatic Melanoma Cell Invasion Into A Brain Micro-Environment, Nicholas C. Borkey
Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 5 Mediates Metastatic Melanoma Cell Invasion Into A Brain Micro-Environment, Nicholas C. Borkey
Honors Theses
While survival rates for localized melanoma are above 98%, metastatic melanoma proves to be an extraordinarily dreadful disease because of its notoriously poor prognosis resulting in less than 15% survival within 5 years. This is due to the fact that the disease is highly resistant to standard cancer therapies. With approximately 40% of melanoma patients progressing to brain metastasis, a greater understanding of the pathways mediating melanoma cell invasion into the brain must be achieved. In this study, a potentially key target often deregulated in melanoma and other cancers, Cyclin- Dependent Kinase 5 (CDK5), will be interrogated for its implications …
Multi-Segment Foot Joint Kinematics With Varying Midfoot Orthotic Postings, Hilary F. Feskanin
Multi-Segment Foot Joint Kinematics With Varying Midfoot Orthotic Postings, Hilary F. Feskanin
Honors Theses
Foot orthoses are often prescribed to prevent and treat lower limb disorders. While the success of these devices is well documented, the mechanisms behind them are unclear. Due to methodological limitations, many studies have focused on the rearfoot. This is the first study to assess the effects of midfoot-targeted orthotic strategies on midfoot and rearfoot kinematics. Gait mechanics were recorded for 19 healthy females walking in four orthotic conditions: valgus midfoot post, varus midfoot post, heel lift and standard/control. The midtarsal and ankle joint 3D kinematics for the three experimental conditions were compared to the control condition. Variables of interest …
Exploration Of Protein-Protein Interactions Involving Deinococcus Radiodurans Pria, Dnab And Ssb, Christopher S. Morrow
Exploration Of Protein-Protein Interactions Involving Deinococcus Radiodurans Pria, Dnab And Ssb, Christopher S. Morrow
Honors Theses
Deinococcus radiodurans is a species of bacteria that has sparked a lot of interest since its discovery due to its incredible resistance to ionizing radiation. When exposed to ionizing radiation the genome of D. radiodurans will sustain over one hundred double stranded breaks. D. radiodurans demonstrates the ability to repair its genome and restart replication after sustaining, typically lethal, DNA damage. This project examined the mechanism of replication restart in D. radiodurans by investigating primosome protein PriA interacting with replicative helicase DnaB and single stranded binding protein. Many different types of gel electrophoresis were employed to investigate potential protein complex …
Does Study Abroad Impact Students’ Personality?, Ashley Ann Marshall
Does Study Abroad Impact Students’ Personality?, Ashley Ann Marshall
Honors Theses
International education is universally valued both in academics and the job market because of the perception that those who study abroad have increased intercultural awareness, experience with diversity, and opportunity for personal growth. Given that students who are studying abroad are experiencing increased independence and experience with a new culture, this is a potential time for the development of perspective-taking, empathic concern, non-prejudice, and other forms of personal growth. The present, longitudinal study collected narrative and non-narrative data on these qualities of personality development before, during, and after the participants’ studies. For comparison, we gathered the same measures with a …
Investigation Of The Genetic Interactions Between Hippo Signaling Pathway And Drosophila C-Terminal Src Kinase (Dcsk), Hailey Jimin Kwon
Investigation Of The Genetic Interactions Between Hippo Signaling Pathway And Drosophila C-Terminal Src Kinase (Dcsk), Hailey Jimin Kwon
Honors Theses
The focus of my research revolved around the intersection between the Hippo tumor suppressor pathway and the Src oncogenic pathway. Both pathways control tissue and organ size during development by regulating cell proliferation, cell death, cell migration, and cell adhesion. Aberrant functions in either pathway are often detected in human cancers and correlate with poor prognosis. The Drosophila C-terminal Src kinase (dCsk) is a genetic modifier of warts (wts), a tumor-suppressor gene in the Hippo pathway, and interacts with the Src oncogene. Reduction in dCsk expression and the consequent activation of Src are reported in hepatocellular and colorectal tumors. …
Synthesis Of Potential Phosphorus-Nitrogen Containing Flame Retardants, Colin Kloock
Synthesis Of Potential Phosphorus-Nitrogen Containing Flame Retardants, Colin Kloock
Honors Theses
Production of extremely efficient flame retardants is ideal because, in many instances, the amount of flame retardants that are added to pre-production to the mixture are so large that they can have an effect on the physical properties of the material. In addition, these types of polymers, when added during production, are homogenously mixed throughout the mixture which means not only uniform distribution and therefore function, but a less concentration of the retardants need to be used. Using Phosphorus-Nitrogen containing flame retardants in mixtures can have two means by which they function. First is the ability of P-N compounds to …
School-Books On Tape: The Tensile And Adhesive Strength Of Duct Tape In A College Backpack, Robin Elizabeth Ker
School-Books On Tape: The Tensile And Adhesive Strength Of Duct Tape In A College Backpack, Robin Elizabeth Ker
Honors Theses
Two categories were used to assess the strength of duct tape constructions: adhesive strength and tensile strength. Previously made duct tape backpacks frequently suffered from adhesive failure around shoulder straps. When a backpack is lifted, it experiences a force which is greater than the resting weight. The hypothesis states that there is an area of application between two pieces of duct tape such that they will behave as a uniform piece and experience tensile failure, that two sufficiently overlapped pieces can hold within 5% of the load carried by a single piece, and that there is a relationship between the …
Coding Dna Into Music: An Alternate Way Of Analysis, Samuel Fesenmeier
Coding Dna Into Music: An Alternate Way Of Analysis, Samuel Fesenmeier
Honors Theses
In the study, we are analyzing the human genome in order to determine patterns that may tell something about how DNA functions. Patterns require an explanation: it is highly improbable that they are random occurrence. These patterns may hint to something about how DNA functions. There are known patterns already discovered in DNA. For example, in the coding portion, three base pairs translate to a specific amino acid. In the non coding portion, however, specific patterns are not as simple.
We will search for patterns by applying a coding system that turns DNA into music. Music may serve as a …
Sherlock Holmes And James Moriarty: Victorian Genius In A Millennial World, Allison K. Carey
Sherlock Holmes And James Moriarty: Victorian Genius In A Millennial World, Allison K. Carey
Honors Theses
In 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published his first novel regarding the detective Sherlock Holmes. He would go on to publish another three novels and 56 short stories detailing the great detective’s endeavors. Today, 128 years later, Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is as popular, as relevant, and as alive as ever. Adaptations continue to be made and achieve success, including the BBC’s mini-series, Sherlock. This modern adaptation and its interpretation of Conan Doyle’s characters, novels, stories, plots, and themes allow for a unique combination of Victorian and Modern England. It highlights the similarities and differences of a Victorian Holmes and …
Reading Interventions In Relation To The Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Kathryn C. Auletto
Reading Interventions In Relation To The Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Kathryn C. Auletto
Honors Theses
Reading is one of the most critical skills that students learn in their first few years of education. A strong foundation in reading at the early childhood level can promote success in the rest of schooling and beyond. This is especially true for children of poverty; reading abilities and the strong education that follows provide students with opportunities to break the poverty cycle. The importance of reading achievement is a political dimension, as demonstrated by Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee. This legislation, which has many implications in education, requires that all third grade students who do not pass the Reading …
Synthesis Of Phosphorus-Based Hemiacetals For Potential Flame Retardants, Sara Alakkad
Synthesis Of Phosphorus-Based Hemiacetals For Potential Flame Retardants, Sara Alakkad
Honors Theses
Flame retardants which contain a phosphorus moiety attached to a carbohydrate backbone were developed. To synthesize the flame retardants, carbohydrates and polyols were used as the starting materials which occur in nature and are environmentally and toxicologically safe materials. The two target structures include one with a triose substructure and one with a pentose substructure. For both situations, however, multiple steps were taken for the synthesis of the flame retardant, as the carbohydrate needed to be generated into its protected form. The protected carbohydrate then interacted with a dialkyl phosphite, resulting in a phosphorous hemiacetal. This hemiacetal was then deprotected …
Black White And In-Between: Race And Ethnicity In The Criminal Justice System 1885-1915, Elizabeth M. Wilhelm
Black White And In-Between: Race And Ethnicity In The Criminal Justice System 1885-1915, Elizabeth M. Wilhelm
Honors Theses
Events in the past year have brought racial and ethnic discrimination in the criminal justice system to the forefront of American consciousness. In reality, race has been used to create stereotypes for centuries, often supported by “scientific” and “statistical” evidence to support the idea that certain races are more likely to commit crimes than others. In my research, I trace the development of these ideas as well as the evidence used to support these racial notions primarily by drawing upon conference transcripts from two professional organizations: The National Prison Association and the National Conference of Charities and Corrections covering the …
