The Effects Of Tourism In Jamaica, Natalie Kearns
The Effects Of Tourism In Jamaica, Natalie Kearns
Honors Theses
Tourism is a fast and continuously growing industry throughout every region of the world. The effect that tourism has on a location usually isn’t the first thought when vacationers enter their destination location. In order to understand the effect of tourists and the tourist industry have had on Jamaica, I examined Jamaica’s historical development, including the tourist industry and the racial inequalities that developed as slaves were brought to the island. Then, using theories on place, identity, and authenticity, I conducted a content analysis of images tourists see while researching vacations to Jamaica.
This analysis confirmed that tourism to Jamaica …
The Difference Between The On Premise And Off Premise Craft Beer Experience: Implications For The Craft Beer Category, Karen Kalinski
The Difference Between The On Premise And Off Premise Craft Beer Experience: Implications For The Craft Beer Category, Karen Kalinski
Honors Theses
The differences between the on-premise and off-premise craft beer experience was researched in this study. The original research question was whether there is a relationship between on-premise and off-premise sales of craft beer. After initial research through semi- structured interviews the research questions were revised to three related questions: 1. What are the on-premise and off-premise craft beer experiences?, 2. Is there a significant difference?, and 3. Does the one behavior affect the other in purchasing behavior? Participants included 12 consumers of craft beer ranging from individuals with extensive craft beer experience to relative newcomers to the craft beer segment. …

Learning From The Past: A Comparative Analysis Of The Influences Of The Great Depression On The Recent Financial Crisis., Shirish Bade Shrestha
Honors Theses
The Great Depression and the recent financial crisis are events that have changed the lives of many American and global citizens. In hopes of preventing similar mistakes in the future, we should study, analyze, and learn from these past events. This investigation attempts to do just that through a rigorous study of the past Great Depression and recent financial crisis. We will explore the two events separately, analyze their similarities and differences and then discuss what we have learned from the Great Depression and see how that knowledge has been used to combat the recent financial crisis. The Great Depression …

"..." Modern Silence, Sarah Maher
"..." Modern Silence, Sarah Maher
Honors Theses
Silence is remarkable, both in concept and in reality. The human ear is outstanding at doing what it was made for. Not only can it withstand loud sound, but can also recognize the softest and most intricate whisperings, as well as everything in between. The ear can recognize all of these sounds and passes them on to our brains for interpretation. Our ears collect all sound but our brains determine what to focus on and what to ignore. But what if there are no “important” sounds? What if you are sitting alone in an empty room, making no unnecessary sounds? …
The Relationship Between Pretend Play Processes And Anxiety, Ashlee L. Weaver
The Relationship Between Pretend Play Processes And Anxiety, Ashlee L. Weaver
Honors Theses
The current research was designed to examine how pretend play is related to anxiety. This relationship with pretend play needs more investigation in order to be able to assess and identify those with anxiety. This is important because pretend play could be used as an intervention to reduce anxiety. It was hypothesized that pretend play is correlated with anxiety; if a child has better pretend play skills, parents are more likely to rate their child’s anxiety lower than parents of children with poorer pretend play skills. The current study examined cognitive and affective play processes, which include organization, imagination, comfort …

This research examines women and their role in healing and healthcare from ancient Egypt and through the Middle Ages, focusing mostly on Western medicine, but also looking at Eastern traditions in medicine in the world of Islam and China. The second part of this project details the creation and execution of an event hosted by the author and her co-chair La'Mayah Hodges for Women's History Month and the research that was presented …
An Examination Of The Moderators To The Effect Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention For Acute Pain, Daniel J. Pineau
An Examination Of The Moderators To The Effect Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention For Acute Pain, Daniel J. Pineau
Honors Theses
Mindfulness interventions are becoming used more often in numerous therapy protocols for people suffering from mental illness as well as physical stressors. The current study aims to assess the effectiveness of a brief (15 minute) mindfulness intervention, and its effect on how tolerant participants can become of a cold-pressor task. We aim to look at not only the effectiveness of the treatment itself, but also possible moderators to the effectiveness of said treatment. Two moderators that will be analyzed are general levels of distress intolerance and emotion regulation skills. Our hypothesis firstly will analyze whether or not brief mindfulness interventions …

Examining The Genetic And Environmental Relationship Between Parent Personality And Childhood Deviance, Alexandra B. Willis
Honors Theses
The purpose of this project was to examine the relations between parent personality and child externalizing behaviors (e.g., acting out, aggression). To do this, parent personality, child temperament, and externalizing behaviors in children were examined. To further understand the role of genetics vs. environmental influences, identical (MZ; monozygotic) twins and fraternal (DZ; dizygotic) twins were compared. This allowed the percentage of the relation that was due to shared environment between the parent and the child versus the percentage of the relation that was due to genetic commonalities between the parent and child to be examined. For this study, archival data …

The Relation between Self-Reported Alcohol and Cannabis Use and Prospective Memory in College Students
The aim of this study is to see if there is a relation between drug use and prospective memory performance. Prospective memory is the ability to remember to do something in the future and is a vital aspect of everyday living. Prospective memory can be broken down into short-term, long-term and event-based or time-based components. Most research on prospective memory has primarily examined differences between young and old adults (e.g., Einstein & McDaniel, …

Plague Inc: Distribution Of Health Resources In The Modern World, Allison Rump
Honors Theses
Due to the ever increasing connectedness of our world, disease can spread faster than ever before. Therefore global health care is a pressing issue in the modern world. The Ebola epidemic of 2014, which infected an unprecedented number of people, was reminder of not only of human fragility but of the state modern medicine, especially when deployed in economically developing areas. Not only is medicine about the science and treatment of disease, it also is about economics and the ability to pay for treatment. This can manifest in many forms, for the Ebola epidemic there often were not enough equipment …

The Effects Of Exercise On The Microbial Metabolites Of The Equine Cecum, Ashton (Johanna) Wilson
Honors Theses
Little is known about the effect of exercise on the microbial profile of the equine cecum. As hindgut fermenters, horses are particular sensitive to gastrointestinal disorders. Previous work (McKenzie et.al., 2010; Walshe and Duggan, 2011; Schoester et.al., 2012; and Jager et.al., 2013) has demonstrated an impact of exercise on the fecal microbial composition of equines and canines. However, no information has been reported on the effects of exercise related to ammonia and volatile fatty acid production within the cecum. The objective of this research was to test the hypothesis that increasing exercise would impact the production of ammonia and volatile …

Unlikely Heroes In Despair: Existentialist Narrators In The Novels Of Albert Camus, Jean Paul Sartre, And Don Delillo, Courtney Mullis
Unlikely Heroes In Despair: Existentialist Narrators In The Novels Of Albert Camus, Jean Paul Sartre, And Don Delillo, Courtney Mullis
Honors Theses
Existentialism is a field of philosophy concerned with questions about existence, death, God, and consciousness. It is "a doctrine that concentrates on the existence of the individual, who, being free and responsible, is held to be what he makes himself by the self-development of his essence through acts of the will" (OED Online). Writing by existentialist philosophers "often belongs more to literature than to philosophy" (Bigelow 173). Existentialist characters in literature are autonomous agents who tend to lack religious faith, constantly ask existentialist questions, and struggle with their own existence and relationship to the world around them. Additionally, existentialist characters …
The Imagined Southern Setting Of Cormac Mccarthy's The Road, John Emory Hooks
The Imagined Southern Setting Of Cormac Mccarthy's The Road, John Emory Hooks
Honors Theses
The Road by Cormac McCarthy hardly seems like a work of southern literature at a first glance. The novel is post-apocalyptic. A man and his son, neither of whom are ever named, trek south as they struggle to survive in a world darkened by ash-filled skies. The setting surrounding them is not recognizable as the southern US anymore. The cities are burnt and everything is covered with ash. If we rely on the geography portrayed by a work of literature to identify that literature as southern or not, then The Road cannot be classified as southern based solely on the …

Not only did I want to expose myself to East Asian culture but I also wanted to expose my readers to it as well. Most of my poems required …
Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Biefeld Brown Effect, Bong Han Lee
Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Biefeld Brown Effect, Bong Han Lee
Honors Theses
By applying high voltage to an asymmetric capacitor, a thrust is created in the direction from the cathode to anode electrodes of the capacitor. Because of the high voltages, the anode ionizes the dielectric medium (air) and creates an “ion wind” by repelling the positively charged ions toward the cathode. This thrust is a result of the law of conservation of momentum. The application to this thrust has been observed in popular media as a levitating device (craft) but its full applications are still unknown and limited to lightweight crafts. In order to uncover its potential applications, this Honors Thesis …
