Nondepository Credit Intermediation And Its Effects On The Financial Well-Being Of Consumers, Nathan Simpson
Nondepository Credit Intermediation And Its Effects On The Financial Well-Being Of Consumers, Nathan Simpson
Honors Theses
This paper investigates whether the availability of consumer loans has a positive or negative effect on the indicators of financial well being for consumers in the same area. By observing the number of consumer lending establishments and regressing those numbers on financial indicators, such as percent in poverty and median household income, this paper observes any statistically significant correlations that arise out of the presence of these establishments as well as the sign (positive or negative) of the correlation. The data period is 2007 to 2013. This process is used for nationwide numbers as well as six selected Southern states. …
The Effects Of Genistein, Thymoquinone, Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate,5-Fluorouracil, And Low Level Laser Therapy On Fadu Hypopharyngeal And Laryngeal Carcinoma Cells, Osasu Adah
Honors Theses
Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma are two types of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. The location of the tumor makes it hard to detect without complex tests. Overall, these types of cancer are not common, and there are no simple screening tests for such cancers. Due to this issue, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma are usually diagnosed when signs and symptoms occur, such as sore throat, trouble swallowing, and constant coughing. With the use of FaDu, a head and neck cancer cell line of the hypopharyngeal origin, experimentation can be performed in order to initiate possible treatments. The standard treatments for …

Both having been deemed public enemy number one, I will compare marijuana and tobacco regarding health effects, profitability after new laws, and their overall economic profitability for the country. I researched …
Calculating Liquefaction Potential Of Northern Mississippi Using Shear Wave Data, Peshani Herath
Calculating Liquefaction Potential Of Northern Mississippi Using Shear Wave Data, Peshani Herath
Honors Theses
The potential for liquefaction can be determined using the Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI). The LPI takes into account the thickness of the liquefiable layers and the factors of safety with respect to depth. This study creates a hybrid method for determining the LPI for different locations in Northern Mississippi. It calculates an average CSR for the region using existing borehole information. The CRR is then calculated using shear wave velocity profile data from a MASW survey. The LPI obtained from this process is compared to LPI values calculated using CPT data and borehole shear wave data. Surface shear wave velocity …

This research will contain a case study of a six-year-old child enrolled …
Fourth Amendment Search Incident To Arrest In The Home: Why Gant's New Vehicular Rules Should Supersede Chimel, Sidney Lampton
Fourth Amendment Search Incident To Arrest In The Home: Why Gant's New Vehicular Rules Should Supersede Chimel, Sidney Lampton
Honors Theses
The purpose of this article is to reveal and propose a solution for the current misguided search incident to arrest doctrine in homes and vehicles. As a result from modern Supreme Court cases, the rules controlling searches incident to arrest are inverted for homes and vehicles. Homes possess a higher expectation of privacy, but currently have less protection from invasive police searches than vehicles. This constitutionally incorrect doctrine is a consequence of Arizona v Gant's decision to return vehicular searches to the original intent of Chimel v California. However, interpretations of Gant failed to make the same adjustment in home …

Honors Theses
This study examines the effectiveness of time perception as a measurement of cognitive load. The purpose of this research is to determine whether the concept of time perception can efficiently indicate high or low cognitive load in a task, and to compare this measurement to the standard mental effort rating scale that is typically used to measure cognitive load. In this study, participants completed both simple and complicated math problems at their own pace. After they were told to stop, participants either rated their level of mental effort used in the task, or wrote down how long they believed it …
Analyzing The Growing Islamic Radicalization In France, Virginia Ruth Brommer
Analyzing The Growing Islamic Radicalization In France, Virginia Ruth Brommer
Honors Theses
Islamic radicalization in European countries is becoming more and more prevalent, as evidenced by the number of recent attacks by Muslims in Europe. I argue that the social, religious, and psychological environment in France creates a unique opportunity for Islamic radicalization, particularly through social media and in prisons. After defining radicalization and explaining two radicalization processes as well as different types of radicals, I analyze the specific factors present in France that contribute to this radicalization. I use case study analysis to examine several French citizens who radicalized, either online or in prison, in order to show how the recruiter …
The Theoretical Argument For Disproving Asymptotic Upper-Bounds On The Accuracy Of Part-Of-Speech Tagging Algorithms: Adopting A Linguistics, Rule-Based Approach, William Foley
Honors Theses
This paper takes a deep dive into a particular area of the interdisciplinary domain of Computational Linguistics, Part-of-Speech Tagging algorithms. The author relies primarily on scholarly Computer Science and Linguistics papers to describe previous approaches to this task and the often-hypothesized existence of the asymptotic accuracy rate of around 98%, by which this task is allegedly bound. However, after doing more research into why the accuracy of previous algorithms have behaved in this asymptotic manner, the author identifies valid and empirically-backed reasons why the accuracy of previous approaches do not necessarily reflect any sort of general asymptotic bound on the …

Through my research, I have found that previous regulations implemented by American and European regulatory agencies …
A Framework For Verification Of Signal Propagation Through Sequential Nanomagnet Logic Devices, Alexander Gunter
A Framework For Verification Of Signal Propagation Through Sequential Nanomagnet Logic Devices, Alexander Gunter
Honors Theses
Nanomagnet Logic is an emerging technology for low-power, highly-scalable implementation of quantum-dot cellular automata. Feedback permits reuse of logical subroutines, which is a desired functionality of any computational device. Determining whether feedback is feasible is essential to assessing the robustness of nanomagnet logic in any pipelined computing design. Therefore, development of a quantitative approach for verification of feedback paths is critical for development of design and synthesis tools for nanomagnet logic structures. In this paper, a framework for verification of sequential nanomagnet logic devices is presented. A set of definitions for canonical alignment and state definitions for NML paths are …
Identification Of Inhibitors Of Fxii, Alexandra C. Bensel
Identification Of Inhibitors Of Fxii, Alexandra C. Bensel
Honors Theses
Hereditary angioedema is characterized by recurrent swelling of the extremities, larynx, and gastrointestinal tract. While type I and type II hereditary angioedema result from a C1-inhibitor deficiency, a new variant of the disease, type III hereditary angioedema, was recently discovered in individuals with functioning levels of the C1-inhibitor. Ongoing research has postulated that increased activity of factor XII is responsible for this new form of hereditary angioedema because it causes overproduction of bradykinin. The purpose of the experiment was to identify inhibitors of factor XII. One hundred and seventy six molecules were screened through a dose response using Human Factor …
This Clinic Stays Open: A Comprehensive History Of Reproductive Rights In Mississippi, 1966-2015., Alicia Bacon
This Clinic Stays Open: A Comprehensive History Of Reproductive Rights In Mississippi, 1966-2015., Alicia Bacon
Honors Theses
In 1966, Mississippi became the first state to reform its criminal abortion laws when it legalized abortion in the case of rape. From the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 to 1986, Mississippi experienced a rapid and dramatic expansion of abortion services and the practice remained relatively unrestricted. Today, Mississippi boasts some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation and only one clinic remains open in the state. Through analysis of newspaper clippings, legislative documents, court rulings, and statistical analyses, this thesis discerns how and when reproductive rights came to be so threatened in Mississippi. The findings show …
Practical Faith: How Southern Black Women And White Women Used Their Faith In Pursuit Of Equality, Holly Baer
Practical Faith: How Southern Black Women And White Women Used Their Faith In Pursuit Of Equality, Holly Baer
Honors Theses
This thesis explores how Southern black and white women used their Christian faith in the pursuit of racial and gender equality, showing how feminist theory and religious doctrine function in reality and everyday practice. The first chapter looks at upper and middle class white women's experiences from the Antebellum period through the early twentieth century, and shows how they used their faith to gain autonomy by manipulating common religious beliefs of the time. The second chapter examines black women's experiences, primarily during the Civil Rights Era, and shows that black women had to approach equality as vocal activists, rather than …

Ten recreationally trained male participants (age: 21.6 ± 1.35 years; height: 180.0 ± 4.51 cm; mass: 83.89 ± 6.74 kg) volunteered to participate in one three-hour testing session. A counterbalanced, controlled cross-over design was utilized for the three footwear conditions, …
The Technician Behind The Artist: Where Science Meets Art, Joella Vaughnn
The Technician Behind The Artist: Where Science Meets Art, Joella Vaughnn
Honors Theses
The thesis has two purposes: to evaluate the difference between oil, acrylic, gouache, and encaustic paint for the purpose of glazing and to integrate engineering and artistic principles into this thesis. My final evaluation across the four paints is that oil has the highest performing glaze. I believe it is the best glazer because time is not a constraint for me as an artist. If an artist has a time constraint on their painting, I recommend using acrylic mixed with an acrylic polymer medium as a glaze because the drying time is much faster than oil. I discovered that gouache …
Design And Synthesis Of Dual Opioids/Npff Ligands As Novel Analgesics With Reduced Tolerance Potential, John N. Yi
Design And Synthesis Of Dual Opioids/Npff Ligands As Novel Analgesics With Reduced Tolerance Potential, John N. Yi
Honors Theses
Opioid use has become prevalent in today's culture. As a treatment for acute and chronic pain, opioids permeate in the public sphere as a seemingly easy solution. However, problems that come from the increased use of opiates, especially in the last fifteen years, have shown detrimental effects in society. Not only are all opioid-based analgesics considered addictive, but the nature of such painkillers also enables a phenomenon known as tolerance, where the body adapts to the use of exogenous opioids. This creates a situation where a more potent dose of painkiller is required for the same analgesic effect. The focus …

The first chapter will look back on the history of advertising to women. It will examine where this ideal standard of beauty originated from and how it was spread throughout American society. The next chapter explores how advertisers use specific psychological techniques to sell not only a product to consumers, but also sell an ideal, attitude or lifestyle. The third chapter examines trends in advertisements, such as objectifying and sexualizing women, stereotyping women …
Portrayals Of Pinochet: Historical Narratives In Chilean Schools, Katie J. Wright
Portrayals Of Pinochet: Historical Narratives In Chilean Schools, Katie J. Wright
Honors Theses
How is the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship represented historically in contemporary Chilean society? To answer this question, this thesis examines the education system, with a focus on high schools and universities in Valparaíso, Chile. I argue that there are two competing discourses about the Pinochet administration - a majority, anti-dictatorship perspective and a minority, pro-regime position - which selectively emphasize differing aspects of the regime. The anti position focuses on human rights violations while the pro perspective puts greater weight on economic achievements. This maps onto Chilean high school institutions, with a majority of upper and upper-middle class students attending private …
Brains In Motion: How To Utilize The Connection Between Movement And Learning In The Classroom, Keely Kennedy
Brains In Motion: How To Utilize The Connection Between Movement And Learning In The Classroom, Keely Kennedy
Honors Theses
Recent research reveals that the state of Mississippi ranks among other states as the highest in obesity and ADHD and among the lowest in education. These rankings negatively affect the state as a whole by associating Mississippi with an image of being unhealthy and unintelligent. Studies show that physical activity is related to the brain and its processes, so there is obviously a connection between Mississippi's high obesity and ADHD rates and inferior education. However, teachers are unaware of the relevance of the connection between movement, high levels of obesity, low education rates, and high levels of ADHD; thus, they …
Study Of An Active-State Cb1 Receptor Model And Jwh Compound Interactions To Predict New Emerging Synthetic Cannabinoids, Kelsey Leigh Pettus
Study Of An Active-State Cb1 Receptor Model And Jwh Compound Interactions To Predict New Emerging Synthetic Cannabinoids, Kelsey Leigh Pettus
Honors Theses
In recent years, a new class of compounds, called synthetic cannabinoids, have made their appearance in the market as a substitute for illegal marijuana or its constituent natural cannabinoids. These compounds, which are active at the same G- protein coupled receptors (GPCRS) as cannabinoids, are continuing to gain popularity because of the same cannabinoid-like effects they create. Though two cannabinoid receptors have been identified in humans, known as CB1 and CB2, synthetic cannabinoid activity at the CB1 receptor has been the focus of much research regarding synthetic cannabinoid ligand binding. In this study, the structure of the CB1 receptor is …
