Part I: Photochemical Generation Of Cyclohexyne From A Hydrocarbon Precursor Part Ii: A Triptycenyl Flower, Daniel Maurer
Part I: Photochemical Generation Of Cyclohexyne From A Hydrocarbon Precursor Part Ii: A Triptycenyl Flower, Daniel Maurer
Honors Theses
Part I
Photolysis of phenanthrene-based methylenecyclopropane derivatives have previously been shown to generate alkylidenecarbenes, which readily rearrange to form alkynes. In this work, we show that photolysis of an analogous cyclic alkylidenecarbene precursor at ambi- ent temperature forms cyclohexyne via the putative cyclopentylidenecarbene, and can be trapped by dienes via a Diels-Alder reaction. Cyclohexyne and other strained cycloalkynes are of much interest to theoreticians and experimentalists alike. Results of coupled-cluster and DFT calculations on the potential energy surface of cyclopentylidenecarbene and the corresponding strained cyclohexyne are also presented. The photochemical generation of cy- clopentylidenecarbene, and thus cyclohexyne, from a hydrocarbon …
Assessing Lakesmart: The Development And Effectiveness Of A Lake Protection Program, Alexa A. E. Junker
Assessing Lakesmart: The Development And Effectiveness Of A Lake Protection Program, Alexa A. E. Junker
Honors Theses
Maine’s nearly 6,000 lakes are a vital resource for the state, generating $6 billion in annual economic activity and sustaining 52,000 jobs. Over the course of the last several decades, this resource has increasingly been threatened by development and related problems, especially nutrient runoff. LakeSmart is a lake protection program designed to stem the flow of nutrient runoff by promoting and rewarding the use lake-friendly landscaping practices.
For this project, I traced the history of LakeSmart from its roots in the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and, through stakeholder interviews and surveys, chronicled its development into the flagship program of …
Are The Brain And The Mind One? Neuromarketing And How Consumers Make Decisions, Emily Glaenzer
Are The Brain And The Mind One? Neuromarketing And How Consumers Make Decisions, Emily Glaenzer
Honors Theses
Neuromarketing utilizes brain-imaging technology, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machines, to understand consumers’ neurological responses to marketing stimuli. In this paper, I demonstrate how neuromarketing connects to the history of subliminal messaging and our current neuro-obsessed culture (neuroculture). These factors affect how critics view neuromarketing and the implications involved for the future of this study. I hypothesize that, when used correctly, neuromarketing can initiate a new section of the marketing world that will serve as a useful component to more traditional marketing practices. By taking away social bias and inaccurate answers present in market research, …
The Historical Ecology Of Queensland’S Australian Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus), Emily M. Walker
The Historical Ecology Of Queensland’S Australian Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus), Emily M. Walker
Honors Theses
Human wildlife conflict is a critical aspect of many societies, as it often plays a large role in government decisions. The iconic saltwater Australian crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is one example of a species that has become the subject of human-wildlife conflict in Queensland, Australia. Decades of intensive hunting in Queensland, beginning at the time of the Second World War, drastically depleted crocodile populations, leading to a federal embargo on crocodile exports in 1972 and their protection in Queensland in 1974. Since protection, populations appear to be recovering with increasing densities in the north and increased sightings along the …
Petrography, Mineralogy, And Geochemistry Of Greenish- And Reddish-Gray Siltstones Straddling The Vertebrate-Defined Permian–Triassic Boundary In South Africa, Jiawen Li
Honors Theses
The Permian–Triassic Mass Extinction (PTME) is considered the largest in Earth’s history, yet the terrestrial response is not well understood. The Karoo Basin, South Africa, hosts abundant exposures of terrestrial deposits that span the Permian– Triassic Boundary (PTB). The terrestrial PTB is defined by a turnover in vertebrate assemblage zones and has been associated with a transition from greenish-gray to reddish-gray siltstone. The current PTME model states that the siltstone color change is a reflection of aridification and eolian deposition, which is believed to represent rapid climate change directly linked with the event. Greenish- and reddish-gray siltstones were collected from …
The Effect Of Temperature On The Supply And Demand For The American Lobster (Homarus Americanus) In The State Of Maine, Gaby E. Carpenter
The Effect Of Temperature On The Supply And Demand For The American Lobster (Homarus Americanus) In The State Of Maine, Gaby E. Carpenter
Honors Theses
The Gulf of Maine (GOM) American lobster (Homarus americanus) stock accounts for 90% of the U.S. American lobster landings. This makes it an extremely valuable and important fishery on a national scale, but also to the state of Maine. In the past decade, the fishery has experienced rapid fluctuation in landings and price due to anthropogenic influences of the water temperature in the GOM. Given the economic importance of the fishery, it is important to understand the future impacts of climate change on the availability of lobster and economic consequences of these shifts. A bio-economic model is used in the …
Using Genetic Algorithms To Evolve Artificial Neural Networks, William T. Kearney
Using Genetic Algorithms To Evolve Artificial Neural Networks, William T. Kearney
Honors Theses
This paper demonstrates that neuroevolution is an effective method to determine an optimal neural network topology. I provide an overview of the NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) algorithm, and describe how unique characteristics of this algorithm solve various problem inherent to neuroevolution (namely the competing conventions problem and the challenges associated with protecting topological innovation). Parallelization is shown to greatly speed up efficiency, further reinforcing neuroevolution as a potential alternative to traditional backpropagation. I also demonstrate that appropriate parameter selection is critical in order to efficiently converge to an optimal topology. Lastly, I produce an example solution to a medical …
Park Politics: Political Influences On Frederick Law Olmsted & The Creation Of Central Park, Kathryn Chow
Park Politics: Political Influences On Frederick Law Olmsted & The Creation Of Central Park, Kathryn Chow
Honors Theses
Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. (1822-1903), renowned landscape architect and journalist, was also a political activist who saw urban parks as a way to facilitate social reform. This study focuses on Olmsted’s role as Superintendent of Central Park (1858-1861), evaluating the impacts of politics throughout his campaign for Superintendent and during the construction of Central Park. Politics, in this study, refers to both the interactions between Republican and Democratic parties, and the interactions between Olmsted and his constituents, in both the government and the intellectual sphere. This study will provide readers with a fuller understanding of how local political disputes, ideas …
The Voluntourism Encounter: Affect, Discomfort, And Transformation In Yaxunah, Caroline Tegeler
The Voluntourism Encounter: Affect, Discomfort, And Transformation In Yaxunah, Caroline Tegeler
Honors Theses
Within the massive tourism and travel industry, the niche market of volunteer tourism has risen recently in both notoriety and popularity with its promises of a more conscious form of experiencing the world and its people. I explore in this thesis project the encounter between volunteer tourist and host community by examining the motivations, expectations, and imagined roles and identities of each side of the voluntourism encounter. The volunteer tourism industry frames voluntourism as a path towards a more personal, ethical and responsible tourism, but has created experiences filled with discomfort for tourists in their encounter with the communities in …
Development Of A Chemical Genetic Screen To Determine Synergistic Compounds With Laromustine In Treating Glioblastoma Multiforme Cultured Cells, Ryan Weeks
Honors Theses
Laromustine is a chemotherapeutic sulfonylhydrazine prodrug used in clinical trials to treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). While treatment of AML with laromustine has more demonstrative clinical success, there are enough promising data against GBM to pursue additional pre-clinical and clinical experiments. To determine the synergistic effects caused by treating cultured GBM cells with laromustine and a library of FDA-approved compounds, a chemical genetic screen was developed. To optimize the screen, optimal cultured GBM cell seed density, growth period and maximum well capacity were determined. The treatment period for a lethal dose of laromustine in cultured GBM …
Experimental And Computational Study Of Methylphenylvinylidene And Its Rearrangements, Xi Yang
Experimental And Computational Study Of Methylphenylvinylidene And Its Rearrangements, Xi Yang
Honors Theses
In this study, the synthesis and properties were explored of the compound methylphenylvinylidene (MPV), a vinylidene carbene with methyl and phenyl groups as substituents. A phenanthrene-based precursor, 1-(1-phenylethylidene)-1a,9b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[l]phenanthrene, was synthesized in three steps and was subjected to photolysis in C6D6 at ambient temperature. During photolysis, the MPV carbene rearranged into 1-phenylpropyne via a 1,2-phenyl shift, instead of 1,2-methyl shift, confirmed by photolysis of 13C-labeled precursor. This experimental result is consistent with computational results using the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-31+G* method. The calculations suggest that the 1,2-phenyl shift in singlet carbene requires 3.8 kcal/mol to overcome …
Shifting Baselines Of Iconic Marine Species In The Caribbean, Samantha Lovell
Shifting Baselines Of Iconic Marine Species In The Caribbean, Samantha Lovell
Honors Theses
As the degradation of Caribbean coral reefs occurs, memory of past states is lost so the degraded status is used as a standard in management, a phenomenon known as “shifting baselines.” To set restoration targets, marine historical ecology studies are helpful to document baselines of species and understand the past productivity of ecosystems. In this study, I examine the historical ecology of the islands Barbuda, Curaçao, and Montserrat. I analyzed archival materials, including historical maps and other documents from the islands to identify previously abundant or iconic species and understand historical changes. From the archival resources I identified 30 places …
The Effect Of Cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia Echinulata In The Belgrade Lakes, Maine, Harriet T. Rothschild
The Effect Of Cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia Echinulata In The Belgrade Lakes, Maine, Harriet T. Rothschild
Honors Theses
Gloeotrichia echinulata is a cyanobacteria species that has been increasingly forming blooms in oligotrophic lakes in the Northeastern United States. The Belgrade Lakes in central Maine have experienced increasing blooms over the past decades. Long Pond and Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes region are popular locations for summer tourism and year-round residents. Research into G. echinulata is important to the Belgrade community because of potential effects to water quality, public health, and recreation. Studying G. echinulata bloom density throughout the summer and how it may affect the phosphorous cycle, the nitrogen cycle, and the plankton community will help scientists …
Global Reach, Local Markets: The Challenges Of Leading Global Innovation, Sarah Higgins
Global Reach, Local Markets: The Challenges Of Leading Global Innovation, Sarah Higgins
Honors Theses
This Global Studies honors thesis addresses how managers and leaders of global firms manage innovation across multiple markets. Current research on multinational corporations provides an understanding of different kinds of innovation and the ways to attend to multiple markets. However, there is less documentation of how these innovation strategies are actually implemented on the ground and the tensions that these efforts might produce. Therefore, my research focuses in particular on the challenges and tensions faced by leaders of global firms as they implement transnational innovation strategies. This study is based upon in-depth interviews with 20 participants who held positions in …
Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Irruptive Fringillid Movements, Paul J. Dougherty
Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Irruptive Fringillid Movements, Paul J. Dougherty
Honors Theses
Historic Christmas Bird Count and eBird data indicate that during winter invasions, North American irruptive fringillid species occur in relatively even numbers across latitudes east of the Rocky Mountains. Most boreal breeding species show large southward invasions every other winter, with this pattern typically being strongest across the northern and mid United States. eBird data confirms that many northern fringillids irrupt synchronously, and both datasets also show positive correlations between the winter movements of southern breeding species in many areas. Winter abundance records show negative correlations between northern breeding species and southern breeding species in nearly all monitored areas of …
Don't Know, Do Not Resuscitate: A Principle For The Creation Of The Kingdom Of Ends In The Icu, Griffen Isaac Allen
Don't Know, Do Not Resuscitate: A Principle For The Creation Of The Kingdom Of Ends In The Icu, Griffen Isaac Allen
Honors Theses
In the United States today 20% of all Americans die in Intensive Care Units, or ICUs. These were developed in the 50s, 60s, and 70s to centralize medical resources to help treat critically ill patients with new technologies like ventilators, dialysis, and other tools that are now commonplace. This occurred simultaneously with the emergence of individualistic autonomy, understood as the patient's right to dictate their treatment, as the dominant force in medical ethics. Ostensibly both of these developments would seem beneficial for patients. However, the ultimate result is overly aggressive care that strips patients of their dignity and ensures that …
Environmental Contingency Of Seed-Fungi Interactions In Coexisting Invasive Purple Loosestrife And Native Cattail, Shayla R. Williams
Environmental Contingency Of Seed-Fungi Interactions In Coexisting Invasive Purple Loosestrife And Native Cattail, Shayla R. Williams
Honors Theses
Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is a highly invasive species able to quickly take over entire wetlands, especially after disturbances. Bountiful seed production and a persistent and prolific seed bank play a key role in loosestrife’s ability to invade. However, some competing native species, such as cattails (Typha spp.) have comparable seed production rates but less abundant seed banks, suggesting that there may be a difference in belowground seed survival. I investigated the abundance of loosestrife and cattail seeds in soils at roadside sites relative to above-ground stem densities. Given the importance of fungal pathogens to seed …
Resonant Collisions Of Potassium Atoms, Philip Michael Adamson
Resonant Collisions Of Potassium Atoms, Philip Michael Adamson
Honors Theses
This thesis discusses an approach to excite potassium atoms to very highly excited states (Rydberg states), and then tune their energy levels to induce resonant collisions between atoms. Potassium gas is super-cooled to 1 mK and confined to a small volume in a magneto-optical trap. A 405 nm laser diode, electronically locked to a potassium vapor cell via Doppler free spectroscopy, excites these atoms from the 4s1/2 state (ground state) to the 5p3/2 state. A 978 nm laser then excites the 5p3/2 to nd3/2 or nd5/2 transition, creating Rydberg atoms. Since there is no ground …
The Impact Of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals On Wildlife Conservation, Eda Reed
The Impact Of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals On Wildlife Conservation, Eda Reed
Honors Theses
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as those from plastics and pesticides, have been hypothesized to affect wildlife populations. According to the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, EDCs ‘are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife.’ A growing number of studies suggest wildlife are being exposed to EDCs, but how EDCs affect wildlife health and wildlife conservation is less well-understood. Through scientific literature analysis and a survey of wildlife conservationists and practitioners, this study aims to determine the current state of knowledge and data …
Analyzing Tuberculosis Diagnosis And Treatment In Kasungu, Malawi, Andrew Currier
Analyzing Tuberculosis Diagnosis And Treatment In Kasungu, Malawi, Andrew Currier
Honors Theses
Despite Tuberculosis (TB) being a highly curable disease, it continues to result in over 5% of deaths in the Sub-Saharan African country of Malawi. Coupled with HIV, the disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Malawi. In the summer of 2015, I joined a research team from Partners in Hope to conduct a survey evaluating the health centers that provide TB care in the Kasungu region of Malawi. After visiting 23 health centers, the results of the 47-question survey were compiled and analyzed to provide information on the capabilities and practices at each health center. The results …
Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard
Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard
Honors Theses
This project argues that devising performance is an inherently queer and utopian form. In response to recent political movements, such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter, which seek to stage dissatisfaction with the systems of late capitalism, I turn to devising performance as a site. Informed by the queer and performance theories of Jose Esteban Munoz, Lee Edelman, and Jill Dolan, I argue that devised theater allows us to process disillusionment, rehearse collectivity, and stage futurity. In conversation with Munoz, I define futurity as an imaginative site that considers what will follow what some scholars suggest will be …
Arts And Elite Schooling: The Accumulation Of Advantaging Forms Of Cultural Capital, Hannah R. Macquarrie
Arts And Elite Schooling: The Accumulation Of Advantaging Forms Of Cultural Capital, Hannah R. Macquarrie
Honors Theses
Very little attention has been given to how schools provide students with opportunities to accumulate advantaging forms of cultural capital through the arts. This project explores the arts as valuable forms of cultural capital and the role the arts play in the production of elites. Because it is widely acknowledged that when researching elites access may be limited, the research for this project was conducted online through publically accessible documents, like curricula, mission statements, facilities, extra-curricular offerings, and additional arts programming on school websites. The eight schools in this study reside in four different, elite towns, and there are both …
Ecological Predictors And Consequences Of Non-Native Earthworms In Kennebec County, Maine, Julia Rogers
Ecological Predictors And Consequences Of Non-Native Earthworms In Kennebec County, Maine, Julia Rogers
Honors Theses
Non-native earthworms are found throughout much of the United States and southern Canada in areas that were glaciated during the most recent glaciation. These earthworms are changing nutrient cycling, modifying soil structure, and influencing diversity in forests throughout the Northern United States, and their invasion northward is facilitated by human activities. Although worms are present in compost piles and gardens of all Maine counties, there are no comprehensive studies of earthworms distributions in forested areas of Maine. I documented the presence and absence of earthworms in forested recreation areas in Kennebec County, Maine, and investigated ecological and landscape level variables …
Are Tax Exemptions For "Churches" A Blessing Or A Curse For Taxpayers?, Hannah Bauman

Honors Theses
This paper focuses on the rules and requirements governing the participation of religious organizations as defined in IRC § 501(c)(3) in the political process. Included in this is a study of historical events and case law both for and against the participation of religious organizations in politics.
The Roles Of Introduced Eucalyptus In The Conservation And Expansion Of Ethiopian Orthodox Church Forests In The Northern Ethiopian Highlands, Janice Liang
Honors Theses
Species of the genus Eucalyptus (common name eucalyptus) are widely planted all across Ethiopia – including on large areas of land previously allocated to food production. In recent decades eucalyptus has also increasingly been planted on lands around and within “church forests,” sacred groves of old-aged Afromontane trees surrounding Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido churches. These revered holy sites have long been recognized for their cultural values and also for their ecosystem services – including their potential to support species conservation and restoration, as church forests are some of the only remaining sanctuaries for many of Ethiopia’s indigenous and endemic plant and …
The Moral Price Of The Profit Motive In Medicine, John Sobieski
The Moral Price Of The Profit Motive In Medicine, John Sobieski
Honors Theses
The profit motive in medicine, which is the desire to maximize pecuniary profit as a primary motivation in patient care, is unethical. Regardless of whether the functional body outputting a medical profit motive is a physician, a group of physicians, or a large hospital, proper medical care should not be undermined by a desire for monetary gain. To say that medical care should not concern itself with money (i.e. costs, budgets) would be foolish; rather, I am asserting that treating medicine like any other business is disrespectful to the core values that predicate patient care. Human health is too important …
Partitioning Groups With Difference Sets, Rebecca Funke
Partitioning Groups With Difference Sets, Rebecca Funke
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the use of difference sets to partition algebraic groups. Difference sets are a tool belonging to both group theory and combinatorics that provide symmetric properties that can be map into over mathematical fields such as design theory or coding theory. In my work, I will be taking algebraic groups and partitioning them into a subgroup and multiple McFarland difference sets. This partitioning can then be mapped to an association scheme. This bridge between difference sets and association schemes have important contributions to coding theory.
Mount Vernon And Monticello : The Changing Representation At Two Presidents' Estates, Katherine J. Simmons
Mount Vernon And Monticello : The Changing Representation At Two Presidents' Estates, Katherine J. Simmons
Honors Theses
Before 1980, complex and controversial topics were ignored and avoided at Mount Vernon and Monticello. Instead their curators favored the enshrinement of the presidents and their mansions, without any mention of the hundreds of people who built and managed these estates. In the 1980s, this began to change. This thesis discusses why and how the expansion of the interpretation of slavery happened over the course of the 1980s and 1990s. Additionally, it seeks to understand how Mount Vernon and Monticello experienced this expansion, and the internal and external reactions to the process. Specifically, it examines this trend as it relates …
Real-Time Translation Of American Sign Language Using Wearable Technology, Jackson Taylor
Real-Time Translation Of American Sign Language Using Wearable Technology, Jackson Taylor
Honors Theses
The goal of this work is to implement a real-time system using wearable technology for translating American Sign Language (ASL) gestures into audible form. This system could be used to facilitate conversations between individuals who do and do not communicate using ASL. We use as our source of input the Myo armband, an affordable commercially-available wearable technology equipped with on-board accelerometer, gyroscope, and electromyography sensors. We investigate the performance of two different classification algorithms in this context: linear discriminant analysis and k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) using various distance metrics. Using the k-NN classifier and windowed dynamic time …

The White-Nose Syndrome Transcriptome: Exploring The Putative Fungal Virulence Genes Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans., Sophia Marie Reeder
Honors Theses
White-nose syndrome (WNS) in North American bats is caused by an invasive cutaneous infection by the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (P. destructans). In a previous study, we used a dual RNA-Seq approach, which allowed us to gain insight into the gene expression of both the host and the pathogen simultaneously, and we observed differences in P. destructans gene expression that suggest host-pathogen interactions that might determine WNS progression. More recently we compared transcriptome-wide changes in gene expression levels in P. destructans grown on and actively infecting the wing of a bat (infecting pathogen) with P. destructans grown in culture (free …
