A Picture Of Health: Art And Medicine In The Lives Of Late 19th-Century Artists Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec And Vincent Van Gogh, Smith Jessie

Honors Theses

For this thesis, I wanted to explore a topic that I found interesting and that I could really enjoy researching. After a study abroad course in southern France in August 2015 during which we explored the locations that inspired artworks by Vincent van Gogh, I found my topic: health and art. After more research, I discovered that this topic could develop into a thesis. Specifically, this project investigates the ways in which the medical conditions of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh affected their perspectives and relationships, and in turn, their artwork. In it, I explore the biographies of …

The increasing prevalence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is an epidemic where once easily treated infectious illnesses are becoming more difficult to treat, leading to prolonged suffering, exacerbated medical costs, and sometimes death. Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is a strain of the Staph Infection causing bacteria that is resistant to penicillin-like beta lactam antibiotics and occurs at a high incidence in several countries in Europe, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region. In a routine screening of plant extracts, an extract of American Sycamore leaves (Plantus occidentalis) was noted to show promising activity against the experimental MRSA strain included in the …

Investigating Veterinary Management Choices For Canine Heartworm Disease (Dirofilaria Immitis) In Northern Mississippi, Tobi Ku Jan 2017

Investigating Veterinary Management Choices For Canine Heartworm Disease (Dirofilaria Immitis) In Northern Mississippi, Tobi Ku

Honors Theses

Canine heartworm disease affects nearly 45% of dogs in endemic regions of the United States (Atkins, 2005). There are concerns that the chronic use of macrocyclic lactone (ML) preventives to kill adult heartworms (soft- or slow-kill) may have contributed to the development of ML resistance. My study of this problem had three objectives: (a) to determine the frequency of slow-kill treatment in heartworm-positive patients and compare them to practitioner estimates; (b) to survey practitioner opinions on the factors influencing heartworm disease management; and (c) to analyze the heartworm prevention history of heartworm-positive patients in order to understand the causes of …

Market Competition And Individual Security In The Chilean Pension System, William Mahoney Jan 2017

Market Competition And Individual Security In The Chilean Pension System, William Mahoney

Honors Theses

In 1981, Chile was the first country in the world to implement a privatized elderly social security system: the Administradoras de Fondos de Pensiones (AFP). The system's creators argued that the forces of market competition would improve pension amounts and that the AFP would promote nation-wide equality in the pension system—the former pension system was not one system, but a collection of pension systems that were highly stratified by class. In 2017, pension payouts have not met expectations, and the AFP is one of the most salient and contentious issues in Chilean politics. The overarching objective of this thesis is …

Interpretations And Implementations Of Various Accounting Standards, Hannah Claire Farmer Jan 2017

Interpretations And Implementations Of Various Accounting Standards, Hannah Claire Farmer

Honors Theses

This thesis examines how to interpret and implement a variety of accounting standards. By using a variety of accounting cases, I have researched the issue at hand to determine the proper accounting standard that provides guidance on the way the issue must be treated. In some of these cases, such as the tax case, the guidance regarding the treatment of the tax percentages is very loose. In instances such as these, there may be several answers to the problem at hand. However, in many other cases, the guidance that accompanies the standards relating to the case are very straight-forward and …

The Implementation Of Multicultural Literature In The Secondary English Classroom: A Preservice Teacher's Experience, Jenna L. Smiley

Honors Theses

Even though the United States is more diverse than ever before in its history, selected literary texts in the secondary English curriculum have largely remained the same over past decades with minimal inclusion of multicultural literature - literature that is written by or about minority cultures. Multicultural literature is a subset of the greater idea of multicultural education, which is an education that is inclusive of all cultures with the goal of preparing all students to be productive citizens in a diverse, global society. Teachers are hesitant to use multicultural literature because of their implicit biases, neglect of inquiry, and …

The three chosen methods were: a traditional drip brew, a cold brew, and a Pezzetti espresso brew. The final method …

A Hardware Algorithm For Self-Balancing Binary Search Trees, Joseph Deiermann Jan 2017

A Hardware Algorithm For Self-Balancing Binary Search Trees, Joseph Deiermann

Honors Theses

Binary search trees are binary trees with an ordering mechanism that makes the time to search for any given item within the tree is greatly reduced compared to an unordered array of numbers. More specifically, a balanced binary search tree is faster at finding a specific item in the tree than an unbalanced tree. There are several algorithms that can automatically balance a binary search tree. Most of them do this through rotations directly in their respective insert functions. These algorithms are mostly implemented in software. This paper will present a hardware-based algorithm to balance binary search trees. This algorithm …

Disproportionality In Discipline And Achievement: Disparities In Mississippi's Public Schools, Kathryn James Jan 2017

Disproportionality In Discipline And Achievement: Disparities In Mississippi's Public Schools, Kathryn James

Honors Theses

Using federally available data on exclusionary punishment and academic achievement, this thesis explores the relationships between disparities in punishment and in achievement. A case study using individual incident referrals supplements these datasets by providing a more nuanced view of student misbehavior, and student types receiving referrals, before punishment occurs. Disproportionalities in in-school suspension rates are positively and significantly related to gaps in academic achievement at the district level. African-American students and repeat offenders were referred at disproportionate rates for subjective offenses, while white students were referred for objective offenses. These findings are of interest to school administrators and teachers interested …

A Weight Intervention Dismantling Study: The Effect Of Social Support And Self-Monitoring On Weight Management In College Students, Kathryn Prendergast

Honors Theses

Evidence shows that psychological intervention with obese individuals facilitates improved diet, increased physical activity, weight loss, and maintenance of stable body weight over time. These interventions use techniques derived from broader theory and empirical work related to the health belief model (HBM), theory of planned behavior (TPB), and social cognitive theory (SCT) to target general health behaviors in terms of diet, patterns of eating, sleep, stress, and level of physical activity. These behaviors have been effectively targeted by multi-component evidence-based practices utilizing self-monitoring and social support: two common components that facilitate implementation, requiring few resources. While evidence suggests that interventions …

Macbeth In Film: Directorial Choices And Their Impact On The Audience, Kellie Suzanne Mcclelland Jan 2017

Macbeth In Film: Directorial Choices And Their Impact On The Audience, Kellie Suzanne Mcclelland

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I closely examine William Shakespeare's 17th century tragedy, Macbeth, in comparison to five film adaptations for a 21st century audience: Roman Polanski (1971), Philip Casson (1979), Geoffrey Wright (2006), Rupert Goold (2010), and Justin Kurzel (2015). I chose to survey the women in Macbeth specifically because of historical blame placed on either Lady Macbeth or the witches for Macbeth's actions. General critical perceptions are that these women robbed Macbeth of his agency or free will and urged him, coerced him, to commit unspeakable crimes to advance his career. What I found in these productions are a variety …

Sans Fin: Language Of Loss, Lane Jennings Proctor Jan 2017

Sans Fin: Language Of Loss, Lane Jennings Proctor

Honors Theses

This is a hybrid collection of creative pieces that I have written in order to try to capture the feelings associated with loss and oppression. These pieces are only loosely related thematically and are not one single narrative. I especially wanted to focus on female characters who become disillusioned with their lives, find they have no real agency, or that they cannot truly write their own narratives. Through research on the Middle East, mostly focusing on Syria, and a close friendship with a Syrian refugee while I was studying abroad in Paris, I found the inspiration and ideas for many …
