Curriculum Bien Fait: The Quest For A Coherent High School Literature Curriculum, Shelby Reed Knighten Jan 2017

Curriculum Bien Fait: The Quest For A Coherent High School Literature Curriculum, Shelby Reed Knighten

Honors Theses

This literature review examines sources of incoherency——both macrocosmic and microcosmic——that impact the goal of establishing a coherent high school literature curriculum. Macrocosmic sources of incoherency involve the institutions through which standards and curriculum are constructed while microcosmic sources concern issues within the discipline of English. Among the macrocosmic/institutional sources of incoherency are an unclear division of power between federal and state government, the lack of a professional vocabulary in education, competing interpretations of standards and reforms, and a lack of educational infrastructure. Microcosmic/disciplinary sources include competing ideologies within English education as well as the weakening of the classical, ethical, and …

Modification Of Panobinostat To Increase Its Therapeutic Potential To Cure Multiple Myeloma, Sweta Adhikari Jan 2017

Modification Of Panobinostat To Increase Its Therapeutic Potential To Cure Multiple Myeloma, Sweta Adhikari

Honors Theses

Panobinostat is a potent histone deacetylase inhibitor that can impede function of a wide range of zinc-dependent histone deacetylases. Panobinostat is the first approved histone deacetylase inhibitor for the treatment of multiple myeloma, along with other drugs such as Velcade and Dexamethasone. Simplistically, it helps to shrink or eradicate tumor growth in multiple myeloma patients. However, the treatment has severe adverse effects due to its lack of selectivity. In collaboration with Dr. Shana Stoddard (Rhodes College, Memphis TN) and Fatima Rivas (St. Jude's Research Hospital, Memphis TN), our research aims to design a more selective model of panobinostat that binds …

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of The Hydrogen Bonding Interactions Of Hydroxyethyl Ethers, Ashley Elizabeth Williams Jan 2017

Spectroscopic And Computational Studies Of The Hydrogen Bonding Interactions Of Hydroxyethyl Ethers, Ashley Elizabeth Williams

Honors Theses

The isoenzymatic form of microsomal cytochrome P450, CYP2E1, is involved in the formation of oxygen free radicals, specifically hydroxyethyl ether. Chronic alcohol abuse has been found to induce larger levels of CYP2E1 in the liver, thus increasing production of these harmful free radicals. Generation of the hydroxyethyl ether oxygen free radicals occurs during the metabolism of ethanol in microsomes. The hydrogen-bonding interactions of hydroxyethyl ethers with water have yet to be analyzed, and information regarding the interactions with water can be applied directly to biological systems. Here, we employ Raman spectroscopy and computational chemistry to study hydroxyethyl ether complexes in …

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to describe French satire, how it has illustrated changes and issues in society, and also how it has influenced political identity in France. Beginning with the principles of the Enlightenment, this thesis seeks to understand the important role that criticism has played in regards to established institutions. Satire has always pushed the limits of the taboo, serving as an indicator for what is acceptable and what is not. In the nineteenth century, decades of governmental change following the 1789 French Revolution gave satire a voice through its honesty and blatant judgment. During this time, …

The Metaphysics Of Transubstantiation: The Problem Of Individuation In The Seventeenth Century, Conrad J. Collins Jan 2017

The Metaphysics Of Transubstantiation: The Problem Of Individuation In The Seventeenth Century, Conrad J. Collins

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to look at the recurring question of the relationship between theology and philosophy by investigating the 17th century debate on the Eucharist as it revolved around Descartes and Leibniz. The Jesuit explanation of transubstantiation involves the philosophical problem of individuation, which asks what makes an individual substance what it is. Therefore, the study focuses specifically on the problem of individuation as it is treated by the philosophers Descartes and Leibniz as they try to answer the previous question. Descartes's mechanical philosophy runs against the notion of what constitutes a body, while Leibniz's monadology finds …

A Study Of Conductance For A Random, Hierarchically-Structured Material, Daniel Salvador Jan 2017

A Study Of Conductance For A Random, Hierarchically-Structured Material, Daniel Salvador

Honors Theses

I consider a mathematical model for the conductance of a system formed by a hi- erarchical network of random bonds. My simulations show that the net conductance converges to a fixed number γ ≈ 0.35337 when the conductances of the bonds are num- bers selected uniformly at random from the interval (0,1). By linearly approximating the model around γ, I derive a new simplified model which I then study in rigorous mathematical detail. I prove a generalized central limit theorem for the new linearized system.

Taking Things At Face Value: Typeface And Its Influence On Reading, Memory, Judgment And Time Perception, Danielle Hollingsworth

Honors Theses

Differing typefaces, such as serif, sans serif, or script, offer varying physical characteristics and can aid or inhibit legibility. These distinctions between typefaces lead to fonts being deemed as either perceptually fluent or disfluent. As fluency of a text is altered, the notion is offered that processing changes occur, which can influence factors of reading a text. Altering fonts have previously been shown to influence reading speeds, memory, and time estimation judgment. This thesis tests the relationship of font type with these aspects, with the addition of another judgment portion regarding perception of text quality. Determining the aspects which can …

Effects Of Dioscin On Dna Methyltransferase 1 Protein Expression In Human Breast Cancer Cell Lines, David Andrew Means Jan 2017

Effects Of Dioscin On Dna Methyltransferase 1 Protein Expression In Human Breast Cancer Cell Lines, David Andrew Means

Honors Theses

In previous experiments, the steroidal saponin, dioscin, which was extracted from the roots of the wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), was observed to have potent anti-proliferative effects on the human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. Dioscin was also able to activate the transcription of tumor suppressor genes GATA3 and CDH1 in these cell lines. We hypothesize that the anti-proliferative effect of dioscin on human breast cancer cells could be mediated through the epigenome. Consequently, in order to explore this hypothesis, we have analyzed the expression of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) protein in these cells. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells were …

Iodination Of 3,5-Dichloroanisole Using Silver Salts, Alex Fan Jan 2017

Iodination Of 3,5-Dichloroanisole Using Silver Salts, Alex Fan

Honors Theses

A paper published by Joshi et al. showed lower than expected yields in mono- and di-iodination of 3,5-dichloroanisole in dichloromethane using silver salts. One possibility for this could be that the starting material was being tri-iodinated and precipitating out of the solution. We used similar reaction conditions in attempts to prepare and isolate triiodinated product, but attempts of recrystallization from ethanol, DMSO, and 2- methoxyethanol showed no signs of it. Removal of silver iodide from the solids formed during the reaction using aqueous potassium iodide resulted in complete dissolution of the entire crude product, suggesting no organic product as well. …
