Sustainability Of Direct Sellers In Marketing, Ashten N. Holloway May 2017

Sustainability Of Direct Sellers In Marketing, Ashten N. Holloway

Honors Theses

This paper examines the characteristics of people who are a good fit for a career in direct selling marketing as well as the characteristics of those who are not. It is also an examination of the motivations to join direct selling and the different levels of “success” that some may find in their careers as direct sellers. Some of the motivators for success came from emotional drives while some were situational. Analysis of the questionnaires given to each participant led to the discovery of three common determinants of what does make a successful direct seller and four determinants of characteristics …

Two surveys were utilized, the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Health Related Quality of Life survey. Students were also asked to record their gender, which allowed for the second analysis. After scoring the …

Autobiography And Authenticity: Writing Are You Sure?: Experiences Of A Gay Foster Youth, Zachary A. Clein May 2017

Autobiography And Authenticity: Writing Are You Sure?: Experiences Of A Gay Foster Youth, Zachary A. Clein

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of authenticity in autobiographical writing, then apply what has been discovered to the author’s own autobiographical play. Researching for the project involved reviewing various forms of autobiographical writing performed on the stage (including The Normal Heart, a straight play/ non-musical production, a musical, From Foster Care to Fabulous, and a “memory play” The Glass Menagerie). One thing became clear after reviewing these pieces of literature: emotional authenticity, not fact, was the driving force. This stems from the inherent power autobiographical writing possesses to inform audiences on important topics, which allows …

Identifying Behavioral Response Trends Following Aggression In Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Breanna M. Cheri May 2017

Identifying Behavioral Response Trends Following Aggression In Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Breanna M. Cheri

Honors Theses

In group-living species, an individual’s response to aggression from another animal can reveal information about the complexities of their social relationships. The current study sought to categorize behavioral responses between conspecifics following direct aggression. Agonistic behavioral interactions were analyzed in a semi-captive group of bottlenose dolphins housed at the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences, whose population dynamics mirror those observed in the wild. Interactions began at the onset of an aggressive behavior, and all concomitant behaviors between aggressor(s) and recipient(s) were coded chronologically for the length of each event. Results revealed five response types present following aggression: retaliation, reconciliation, avoidance, …

Examining The Needs Of Refugees And Refugee Service Providers: A Case File Examination, Alyson D. Miller May 2017

Examining The Needs Of Refugees And Refugee Service Providers: A Case File Examination, Alyson D. Miller

Honors Theses

Refugees are people who have fled their country as a result of experienced persecution or fear of persecution. Research shows that refugees face many challenges and have many needs after being relocated in the United States. Once refugees are resettled, the goal of resettlement organizations and agencies is that refugees achieve self-sufficiency and be integrated into the community. This research aims to discover if refugee demographic characteristics have an effect on the amount of financial assistance refugees receive for relocations or an effect on achievement of self-sufficiency. This research is a quantitative secondary analysis taken from the case files of …

Honors Theses

This research sought to describe the size and analyze the content of communities on Tumblr that share posts regarding Lolita, Lana Del Rey, and sugar culture. Research questions included: Why might young women on Tumblr choose to share posts relating to these things? How are they interpreting the images and texts they share? Is this a means of expressing desire, or are these individuals subverting these images and ideas as a means of critiquing gender expectations? A qualitative textual analysis was conducted on data collected by social media analytics software. Tumblr communities sharing content regarding Lolita, Lana Del Rey, and …

Measuring The Presence Of The Amphibian Pathogen Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis In East Tennessee, Erin A. Schrenker May 2017

Measuring The Presence Of The Amphibian Pathogen Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis In East Tennessee, Erin A. Schrenker

Honors Theses

I examined the presence and absence of the amphibian pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in three survey areas in Eastern Tennessee. Amphibians were swabbed to assess for Bd and other ecological qualities like canopy cover, and air and water temperature are a few of the measurements evaluated. DNA was extracted from the swabs using a Qiagen DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit and samples were PCRed in triplicate to confirm presence or absence. All 48 animals that were swabbed in the field were negative for Bd. These results parallel other findings that few Bd positive assays have been conducted in East Tennessee from …

Nutrition Education Intervention In A Low-Income Middle School Increases Students’ Smart Beverage Choices, Liana Rodrigues May 2017

Nutrition Education Intervention In A Low-Income Middle School Increases Students’ Smart Beverage Choices, Liana Rodrigues

Honors Theses

Historically, the intake of fruits and vegetables by children is low, and children in low-income environments are even less likely to consume the recommended fruits and vegetables each day. Fruit and vegetable consumption is linked to obesity which leads to other detrimental diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this intervention was to evaluate the effects of an afterschool nutrition education in a low-income middle school setting. A pre-survey and post-survey were implemented to evaluate how the intervention impacted the participants’ general nutrition knowledge, open-mindedness to taste unfamiliar fruits and vegetables (FVs), and intake …

Fluorescence And Uv-Vis Studies Of Quinone-Induced Protein Modifications, Charles A. Thomas Jr May 2017

Fluorescence And Uv-Vis Studies Of Quinone-Induced Protein Modifications, Charles A. Thomas Jr

Honors Theses

Quinones are the metabolites of a class of chemicals known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These chemicals have been found to be toxic in the environment, especially when interacting with certain proteins. In this study, we investigated the modification of Lysozyme and Ribonuclease A by a series of benzoquinones as well as few naphthoquinones. Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to measure the degree of modification of Lysozyme and Ribonuclease A when incubated with quinones at differing concentrations and for various times. All reactions, unless noted, were carried out in a phosphate buffer (pH=7.0) at 37°C to mimic physiological conditions. The fluorescence intensity …

Prevalence Of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis (Bd) In Watercourses Situated In Southeast Tennessee, Macall A. Nabors May 2017

Prevalence Of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis (Bd) In Watercourses Situated In Southeast Tennessee, Macall A. Nabors

Honors Theses

Four hundred and twenty-seven amphibian species are critically endangered. The fungal disease Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been correlated with amphibian decline and extinction. Numerous studies concerning the nature of Bd have been conducted; however, additional studies are needed to adequately evaluate Bd in southeastern Tennessee. As a result of previous studies, the following hypothesizes were proposed: watercourses in southeastern Tennessee will test positive for Bd, non-impacted streams will have a greater presence of Bd than impacted streams, and increased canopy coverage has a positive correlation with the presence of Bd. Field sampling took place from June 2nd 2016 to August …

Demographic Differences In Drug Dependency: Implications For Policy, Practice, And Research, Charles D. Baker May 2017

Demographic Differences In Drug Dependency: Implications For Policy, Practice, And Research, Charles D. Baker

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research study was to examine whether there are differences in drug dependency based on demographic characteristics. The four most commonly used or abused drugs were included in this analysis (i.e., nicotine, alcohol, pain relievers, and marijuana). The secondary purpose is to explore whether there were demographic differences in mental health and drug treatment among those with a substance use disorder. Substance dependence is a state in which someone can only function normally with the presence of a drug. Past research has examined this topic to some degree; however, trends often change over time. This study found …

When Deception Gets Personal: An Exploration Into Personality's Link To Deception, Jason T. Weber May 2017

When Deception Gets Personal: An Exploration Into Personality's Link To Deception, Jason T. Weber

Honors Theses

Most of our understanding of deceptive behaviors comes from cognitive (Vrij, Fisher, & Blank, 2015) or social psychological (Ekman, 2009) perspectives, and furthermore comes from forensic deception detection research and strategies (Vrij, 2008). One psychological domain that has not had as much investigation in relation to deception is personality. The present study examines the connection between personality traits and one aspect of deceptive behaviors – motivations to lie. College students completed self-report surveys online regarding personality, their lying habits, and basic demographic questions. Additionally, participants read several lying scenarios and rated the likelihood of lying. In a sample of 292 …

Irrational In Its Rationality: A Critique Of The All Lives Matter Movement And One-Dimensional Society, Elliot Newell May 2017

Irrational In Its Rationality: A Critique Of The All Lives Matter Movement And One-Dimensional Society, Elliot Newell

Honors Theses

In his book One-Dimensional Man, Herbert Marcuse argues that modern society has lost the ability to critique itself. Contradictions are hidden through manipulative language and protest is suppressed. As a result, Marcuse asserts that our society has become rational in its irrationality, so that contradictions appear logical and even beneficial. Though published in 1964, Marcuse's theory is still relevant today, and is seen in the All Lives Matter movement. As a response to Black Lives Matter, All Lives Matter makes the seemingly rational claim that everyone in America is valued equally, and that racial prejudice is a thing of the …

Engagement With The Visual Arts Increases Mindfulness, Lydia G. Fogo May 2017

Engagement With The Visual Arts Increases Mindfulness, Lydia G. Fogo

Honors Theses

For many cultures throughout the ages, art has been synonymous with healing and has held a key role in many ancient spiritual and religious healing rituals. Traditionally, art has also been held as a hallowed and fundamental part of society and culture. However, the role of art is changing. Today the value of art-making is in increasingly under scrutiny and often dubbed an unnecessary and unimportant luxury. Art is being slowly removed from school curricula and faces defunding. While art has never been more available, still too often art is quarantined in the isolated halls of museums and available only …

A Study Of The Photoacoustic Effect In Ethylene Gas, Jay Nguyen May 2017

A Study Of The Photoacoustic Effect In Ethylene Gas, Jay Nguyen

Honors Theses

Ethylene, C2H4, is a plant hormone produced and released naturally by plants and soil microorganisms. This colorless, flammable gas has a slightly sweet odor usually only recognized by those who have handled ethylene before. In situ analyses of this gas and many other potentially harmful gases outside of the laboratory are often difficult to perform due to the lack of a portable yet reliable unit capable of precisely and accurately detecting and measuring the concentrations of these gases at trace gas concentrations of a few parts per billion. In this research project, photoacoustic spectroscopy was used to detect and measure …

Rms Titanic: Creating An American Obsession, Judith E. Cathey May 2017

Rms Titanic: Creating An American Obsession, Judith E. Cathey

Honors Theses

The RMS Titanic is perhaps one of the most famous disasters in United States history. Despite being a disaster that was not even on United States’ territory, it impacted the United States like no other disaster had before. The magnificent ship that represented the culmination of Gilded Age and Industrial progress sank, something many believed was impossible. After the sinking, there was a high demand for information about the catastrophe and the passengers who died, and this was when Titanic Mania began. The United States has experienced 3 eras of obsession with the Titanic: 1912 and 1913, the 1950s, and …

Floccinaucinihilipilification, Bonnie A. Buffington May 2017

Floccinaucinihilipilification, Bonnie A. Buffington

Honors Theses

Floccinaucinihilipilification is one of the longest words in the English language. It is mainly used as a curiosity, and means the action or habit of estimating something as worthless. Stumbling upon words like this has always brought me a small amount of joy, and the moment I learned this word I knew it encapsulated everything this project was meant to be. The allure it held went beyond the definition, which I connected to the difficulties I experienced when beginning this creative research endeavor. I chose it thinking of the titles of many scientific research papers; they contain words that are …

The In Vitro Effects Of Glucosamine On Equine And Canine Platelet Aggregation And Thromboxane Synthesis, Gabrielle Rands

Honors Theses

Citrated blood samples were collected via jugular venipuncture and used to create platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP samples were incubated for 5 minutes with four concentrations of glucosamine: 0 µ/ml (control), 10 µ/ml, and 100 µ/ml. Platelet aggregation was determined using turbidometric aggregometry using ADP or collagen as agonists. Thromboxane B2 concentrations were measured using a commercially available ELISA kit. The results were analyzed using mixed model analysis. Significance was set at p<0.05.

The Impact Social Withdrawal In Depression Has On Social Functioning, Clayton H. Allred May 2017

The Impact Social Withdrawal In Depression Has On Social Functioning, Clayton H. Allred

Honors Theses

Depression is a major health concern worldwide, particularly through its impact on individuals' level of functioning. However, noticeably absent from the study of depression and social functioning is an examination of social withdrawal. This paper examines if social withdrawal predicts social functioning above and beyond symptoms of depression and anhedonia. We developed the Social Withdrawal Scale (SWS) and tested it, along with other measures of depression and social functioning, using participants from Amazon MTurk. The results of the study indicated that the SWS functioned best as a single factor measure. The SWS did in fact predict additional variability in social …

Decoding The Contents Of Working Memory Using Eeg Provides Evidence For The Sensory Recruitment Hypothesis, Allison L. Bruning May 2017

Decoding The Contents Of Working Memory Using Eeg Provides Evidence For The Sensory Recruitment Hypothesis, Allison L. Bruning

Honors Theses

Recent fMRI studies have shown that the contents of visual working memory can be decoded from early visual areas, including V1. This result has been interpreted as support for the sensory recruitment hypothesis: the idea that the neurons responsible for vision also sub-serve visual working memory and visual imagery. However, whereas these results imply that the same brain areas are responsible for vision and visual memory, they do not rule out the possibility that these processes rely on completely different populations of neurons within these areas. For example, although viewing and remembering an orientation might lead to the same global …

Reducing Social Demands In Child Eyewitness Memory Using Robot Interviewers, A. Zachary Buchanan May 2017

Reducing Social Demands In Child Eyewitness Memory Using Robot Interviewers, A. Zachary Buchanan

Honors Theses

A recent study showed that children's memory for a witnessed event was not impaired when misleading post-event information was presented by a robot interviewer. However, their memory was impaired when the misleading information was presented by a human interviewer, despite the implementation of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's Investigative Interview Protocol (NICHD). The NICHD is specifically designed to elicit veridical information from child eyewitnesses, in both human and robot conditions. The proposed explanation for these memory findings is that the social demands inherent in human interviewers were not present in robot interviewers. The current study sought …

The Internal Revenue Code: A Burden For Taxpayers Or An Instrument For Social Change?, Heather N. Murray May 2017

The Internal Revenue Code: A Burden For Taxpayers Or An Instrument For Social Change?, Heather N. Murray

Honors Theses

Social engineering in the tax code has been evident from the beginning of the U.S. tax history. Today, it is as much as ever a part of the fabric of the tax codification, but there is very little research that investigates 1) how social engineering plays a role in the creation of new tax law, and 2) whether tax law is effective in altering taxpayer behavior. This paper streamlines the history of social engineering in the most popular revenue-reducing measures and analyzes how they've affected the U.S. taxpayer, with notes on future policy implications.

Working With Mental Illness And The Preparation Of Social Workers, Destini Triplett May 2017

Working With Mental Illness And The Preparation Of Social Workers, Destini Triplett

Honors Theses

Social workers are often the front line responders for individuals with mental illness. However, there has been limited research related to how social workers are prepared, what the best practices are, and what suggestions have been made to improve preparation in this kind of setting. This research study included a cross-sectional mixed methods study examining the knowledge and preparation of social work professionals as well as recommendations for improving education. The results indicated that social work educators and professionals are competent in their knowledge of mental health. The qualitative responses indicated three overarching themes: (1) confidence in abilities but acknowledgement …

Exploring The Role Of Local Adaptation In The Response Of Maianthemum Canadense To Climate Warming, Spenser J. Ryan May 2017

Exploring The Role Of Local Adaptation In The Response Of Maianthemum Canadense To Climate Warming, Spenser J. Ryan

Honors Theses

By the year 2100, it is projected that average global temperatures will increase by ~4C. Shifts in species distributions have been evidenced as a common response to climate warming across taxonomic groups with migration to higher latitudes and elevations in response to warming being common. Species responses to climate warming can be influenced by the local adaptations of their populations. I hypothesized that populations of M. canadense from warmer locations would respond negatively to warming, while populations from cooler sites would exhibit neutral or positive responses to warming. Maianthemum canadense is a species that is associated with cool, moist microsites …

Gender, Consent, And Hermaphroditic Legibility In James Joyce's Ulysses And Finnegans Wake, Carter R. Elsea May 2017

Gender, Consent, And Hermaphroditic Legibility In James Joyce's Ulysses And Finnegans Wake, Carter R. Elsea

Honors Theses

It is difficult to imagine a more elusive, polemical author than James Joyce. He is often spoken of as both a cosmopolitan and a nationalist, syphilitic madman and genius, and misogynist and writer of écriture feminine. This final paradoxical view of Joyce is one that I find most compelling. However, this is not a project in feminist historiography attempting to reclaim Joyce for feminism, but rather a demonstration of the pulsing bodies that already exist between the texts. When exploring this idea of écriture feminine in Joyce’s Ulysses, one might be surprised that Hélène Cixous refers to Joyce’s treatment of …

Type 1a Supernova Models And Galactic Chemical Evolution, Spencer Henning Apr 2017

Type 1a Supernova Models And Galactic Chemical Evolution, Spencer Henning

Honors Theses

Multiple models of type Ia supernovae are discussed, as well as the properties of white dwarf formation, electron degeneracy pressure, nucleosynthesis, and galactic chemical evolution (GCE). A GCE computer model is used to produce nuclear abundance data corresponding to Chandra (W7) and sub-Chandra (WDD2) type Ia supernovae models for Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, and Mn nuclei. Overall, a trend was found indicating that the WDD2 model had greater [x/Fe] abundance values than the W7 model at the end time of the model. Additionally, each model fit within total observed data, but observed data filtered to highlight white dwarf stars …

Delving Into Multicultural Literature With Inquiry, Juan Gonzalez Apr 2017

Delving Into Multicultural Literature With Inquiry, Juan Gonzalez

Honors Theses

This paper argues for the use of multicultural literature in the classroom, and puts forth a unit plan that uses critical literacy in an English 11 classroom, though it can be readapted to fit other grade levels. Bishop (1990) describes multicultural literature as a set of windows, that people use to view the experiences of others, and mirrors, that reflect and validate peoples’ experience, a core principal in this paper. Critical literacy is comprised of four dimensions (Lewison, Flint, & Van Sluys, 2002) that allows for analyzing literature in a different and meaningful way. The final part of this paper …
