The Response Of Fuzzy Electronics To Ionizing Radiation, Simar Singh
The Response Of Fuzzy Electronics To Ionizing Radiation, Simar Singh
Honors Theses
Small satellites such as CubeSats operate under environmental constraints that are outside of typical commercial specifications. Such constraints include the ability to operate over an extended temperature range and during exposure to ionizing radiation. Nevertheless, commercial technologies are being implemented in CubeSat spacecraft because of the low-cost, low-power, and space savings requirements often achievable with advanced microelectronics [1]. Due to flexibility and the ability to handle uncertainty, fuzzy logic is viable for satellite control while meeting the strict design requirements of a CubeSat. This work evaluates the response of fuzzy control logic to ionizing radiation and compares the response to …
Implementing Early Screening Methods To Detect Resistance To Phytophthora Cinnamomi In Backcross Chinese-American Chestnut Hybrids, Kirsten Hein
Honors Theses
Phytophthora root rot (PRR), caused by the oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands., is one of the two greatest obstacles to survival of American chestnut (Castanea dentata Borkh.). The other is chestnut blight, caused by the ascomycete Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr. Developing early and reliable PRR screening methods can facilitate the efficient introgression of PRR resistance from Chinese chestnut (C. mollissima Blume.) into the populations of potentially chestnut blight resistant trees currently under development by The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF). This study tests the efficacy of a method for early identification of PRR-resistant hybrid chestnuts in a greenhouse/nursery setting. The chestnut blight …
Characterization Of Metamorphic Zones In The Tennessee Blue Ridge Using Gis And Digital Imaging Processing, Hayley Beitel
Characterization Of Metamorphic Zones In The Tennessee Blue Ridge Using Gis And Digital Imaging Processing, Hayley Beitel
Honors Theses
The origin of metamorphic zones of the Blue Ridge is attributed to metamorphic events that affected sedimentary rocks of debated age, leading the topic to be controversial and continuously studied. The present study seeks to refine the metamorphic isograds of the Tennessee Blue Ridge based on Barrovian index minerals in pelitic rocks and the texture patterns these pelitic rocks present. Methods used in the present study are supported by conventional petrography, powder X-ray diffraction, and by GIS and digital image processing. Metamorphic isograds in the Blue Ridge have been determined mainly by identification of index minerals using a polarizing petrographic …
Molecular Monitoring Of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa) In A Hospital Setting, Jessica Ammon
Molecular Monitoring Of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa) In A Hospital Setting, Jessica Ammon
Honors Theses
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a potentially pathogenic bacterium that poses a serious risk in healthcare settings. MRSA can be characterized by a genetic element, known as the staphylococcal cassette chromosome, which harbors the gene responsible for methicillin resistance, mecA. MRSA can be classified into two categories: community acquired (CA) and hospital acquired (HA). S. aureus strains represent a major health concern due to their prevalence in healthcare facilities and their rapidly evolving antibiotic resistance. The current study investigated the association between MRSA isolates obtained from patients and from the intensive care units in a local hospital. Among the …

Critias Of Athens And The Sisyphus Fragment, Sarah Adison Phillips
Critias Of Athens And The Sisyphus Fragment, Sarah Adison Phillips
Honors Theses
This paper undertakes a discussion of the Sisyphus fragment and Critias of Athens, examining the question of authorship and arguing that, ultimately, the attribution to Critias is more important than whether or not his authorship of the fragment is historical fact, though it is also likely that he did indeed write it. The attribution to Critias is supported by the consistencies between the views present in the fragment and Critias’ character and actions as reported by contemporaries and later biographers. Moreover, those views are a natural extension of pre-Socratic thought and share some commonalities with Plato’s own philosophy; by establishing …
Analyzing Palm Print Shapes With Pressure And Distortion, Whitney Grannan
Analyzing Palm Print Shapes With Pressure And Distortion, Whitney Grannan
Honors Theses
While much research exists on latent fingerprints, there is a lack of research on palm prints. This study aims to discover how the variable of pressure affects the distortion of latent palm prints recovered from a crime scene. This study used various development techniques to extract prints from aluminum Coca-Cola cans, white copy paper, and household steak knives. The collected prints were scanned into the AFIX Tracker system and an auto-extract number, based on the number of minutiae points, was generated automatically from the system. These auto-extract numbers were then compared to a baseline, which consisted of an average of …
The Effects Of Skin Tone On The Perception Of Discrimination In Young African American Women, Danielle T. Stamps
The Effects Of Skin Tone On The Perception Of Discrimination In Young African American Women, Danielle T. Stamps
Honors Theses
This research focuses on the perceived discriminatory experiences (i.e. colorism and racism) that young African American women report as a function of their actual and perceived skin tone. Colorism is a form of internalized racism when individuals with darker skin tones are discriminated against by others. Each participant (N = 76) was given the Pantone Skin Tone guide and asked to find the best color (varying on undertone and lightness) that matched closely to their skin tone without feedback from any reflective surfaces and with a handheld mirror. Following that, the researcher identified the participant’s skin tone. In addition, participants …
A Validation Study Of Blueview™ Gunpowder Particle Testing Kit, Hanna Lester
A Validation Study Of Blueview™ Gunpowder Particle Testing Kit, Hanna Lester
Honors Theses
The examination of gunshot residue is often an integral part of evidence processing. The aim of this preliminary study is to validate the use of the BlueView Gunshot Particle Test Kit in the field. This was done by comparing the results of the presumptive tests using the BlueView Gunshot Particle Test Kit to confirmatory test results using a scanning electron microscope. This study used both collection techniques to collect samples for presumptive tests and confirmatory tests. Gunshot residue samples were collected from the hands after a series of guns were fired, and positive results were obtained from the presumptive and …
The Impact Of The 120/150-Hour Rule On Candidates To Sit For The Certified Public Accountant (Cpa) Exam: A Study On Women, Aubrey Sanders
The Impact Of The 120/150-Hour Rule On Candidates To Sit For The Certified Public Accountant (Cpa) Exam: A Study On Women, Aubrey Sanders
Honors Theses
To become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), one must first qualify to take the exam and consequently, earn the licensure. While the information on the CPA exam tests the candidates on uniform information, the education eligibility requirements to both sit for and earn licensure vary among the U.S. states and jurisdictions. Currently, thirty-nine of the fifty-four U.S. jurisdictions – including Mississippi – have adopted what has become known as the 120/150 educational credit hour rule. This rule allows candidates to begin taking the exam upon earning 120 credit hours, which is equivalent to a bachelor's degree; however, candidates may not …
Structural Synthesis And Spatial Distribution Of A 335 Ma Igneous Suite From The Eastern Blue Ridge, Alabama Appalachians, Avery Rosenbalm
Structural Synthesis And Spatial Distribution Of A 335 Ma Igneous Suite From The Eastern Blue Ridge, Alabama Appalachians, Avery Rosenbalm
Honors Theses
The Appalachian range was formed by three orogenies, the most recent being the Alleghanian beginning at ~330 Ma. A small pluton outcropping along Highway 280 near Alexander City, AL, called the 280 granodiorite, has been dated at ~335 Ma and intrudes the Devonian Elkahatchee Quartz Diorite (EQD). While little work has been done on the intrusion, it is significant because of its age: all deformation of the intrusion should be related to the Alleghanian orogeny, while most other bodies in the region exhibit significant overprinting due to previous successive orogenies. The pluton was mapped constraining the geographic extent, which is …
Exploring Issues Of Diversity Experiences In Student Organizations Sponsored By The University Of Southern Mississippi, Cornelia Welch-Dick
Exploring Issues Of Diversity Experiences In Student Organizations Sponsored By The University Of Southern Mississippi, Cornelia Welch-Dick
Honors Theses
Colleges and universities are becoming increasingly racially/ethnically diverse. Previous studies have noted that an increase in racial/ethnic diversity has positive outcomes for minority and majority groups. Additional research supports that positive diversity experiences in student organizations have benefits for college students (Kuk & Banning, 2010; Cheng & Zhao, 2007; Antonio, 2001). While the benefits of increased diversity are clear, no previous study was found to have looked at diversity experiences at USM or more specifically, USM’s student organizations. The current study examined the degree to which leaders of each organization perceived experiences of diversity as positive compared to the members’ …
Do Perceptions Of Businesses Differ Between Higher And Lower Counts Of Social Media Post Engagements?, Tally Shaw
Do Perceptions Of Businesses Differ Between Higher And Lower Counts Of Social Media Post Engagements?, Tally Shaw
Honors Theses
Social media is bringing consumers and businesses together like never before. Using social metrics such as “likes” and “shares”, businesses can both measure and influence consumer attitudes and behaviors. In an effort to expand upon growing research into the effects likes and shares may have on constructs such as attitude, intent to follow, trust, and adoption intention, this study designs an experiment which manipulates one small and one national business’s actual Facebook posts to measure the effects simply having higher or lower likes and shares can have on a consumer’s perception of that business. Using T-test and Regression Analysis, adoption …

This project is an analysis and reflection on a magic show performed by myself before a live audience and recorded for documentation. It is a snapshot in time of my progress as a performer at a particular point in my career as a magician. In this paper, I detail my current philosophies on the performance of magic and the reasons why I made certain decisions regarding the structure of the show and the routines I performed. In addition to this, I also discuss adaptations that I have made to these routines since the performance. The analysis is based entirely on …
An Exploration Of Pyrrole Groups On The Enantioselectivity Of Pig Liver Esterase, Brian Long
An Exploration Of Pyrrole Groups On The Enantioselectivity Of Pig Liver Esterase, Brian Long
Honors Theses
Pig Liver Esterase (PLE) is a serine protease enzyme that can interact with one side of a diester to hydrolyze the ester to a carboxylic acid, and research has found that the level of hydrophobicity of side groups can impact the enantioselectivity of PLE hydrolysis.1, 2 The Jones Model is what current researchers use to model the active site of PLE, but the nature of its binding pockets, namely the Hydrophobic Long (HL) pocket, has been called into question.3 Dimethyl 2-((pyrrole-2-yl)methyl)-2-methylmalonate was prepared to be subjected to PLE hydrolysis to see whether enantioselectivity was found. Chiral HPLC revealed 25.32% enantiomeric …
Pro-Antimicrobial Networks Prepared Via Degradable Thiol-Ene Acetal Photopolymerization, Sarah Swilley
Pro-Antimicrobial Networks Prepared Via Degradable Thiol-Ene Acetal Photopolymerization, Sarah Swilley
Honors Theses
A degradable, antimicrobial polymer network with acetal crosslink junctions derived from p-anisaldehyde (pA), a common constituent found in star anise extract, is reported. The p-anisaldehyde was converted into a bis-functional acetal alkene monomer, which serves as a pro-antimicrobial form of the active aldehyde and a building block for materials referred to as pro-antimicrobial polymer networks via degradable acetals (PANDAs). Subsequently, the bis-functional acetal alkene monomer was photopolymerized with a multifunctional thiol to yield a thiol-ene network. PANDAs exhibit surface erosion behavior and yield sustained release of pA over 38 days when exposed to neutral or biologically relevant conditions. The pA …
Investigation Of The Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On The Enantiomeric Excess Of Pig Liver Esterase Hydrolysis Products, Matthew Hasler
Investigation Of The Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On The Enantiomeric Excess Of Pig Liver Esterase Hydrolysis Products, Matthew Hasler
Honors Theses
Pig Liver Esterase (PLE) is an effective enzyme used in the Masterson Research Group due to its ability to hydrolyze only one ester in a malonic diester. PLE is employed for creating chiral molecules for the synthesis of unnatural amino acid precursors. Previous research in the group found that malonic half esters with hydrogen bonding capable substrates yielded varying degrees of enantiomeric excess, and non-hydrogen bonding substrates yielded racemic mixtures.1,2 The compounds synthesized contained substrates consisting of thiophene rings in the second and third position, and these molecules act as a control for the other research done in the group. …
Characterization And Selection Of Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene Polymers For High-Strain Applications, Nathaniel Prine
Characterization And Selection Of Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene Polymers For High-Strain Applications, Nathaniel Prine
Honors Theses
Understanding the behavior of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) as a composite matrix is imperative for the development of future military and aerospace munition technology. As a vital component of solid rocket fuel, HTPB strongly contributes to the fatigue behavior, burn-rate, and other properties that can cause critical failure of the rocket if not formulated properly. The purpose of this research is to identify traits characteristic of poor-performing HTPB matrices by analyzing two samples labeled as either “good” or “bad” based on their performance as a fuel matrix. Samples were analyzed via 1H NMR and GPC to determine their epoxy content, hydroxyl …
Understanding The Coating-Substrate Interface Changes And Degradation Caused By Environmental Acclimation With Water And Electrolytes, Russell Vick
Honors Theses
While it is well known that polymeric coatings are used to protect metals from corrosion, efficient and reliable protocols for quantifying and estimating protective coatings’ lifetimes have yet to match real-time results in rate or in detected mechanisms of material failure. Alkoxysilane pretreatments are widely utilized for substrate preparation and improved coating system performance by changing the metal substrate surface morphology to improve adhesion at the coating-substrate interface by creating a foundation and excluding water from the system. Three pretreatments used were 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (APS), tetraethylortho silicate (TEOS), N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (DAS). They were investigated to improve the understanding of the relationships …

Honors Theses
This project aims to verify the formation of water aerosols induced by an ionizing radiation source in a Nitrogen atmosphere with various levels of humidity. This work is part of an effort to characterize the overall signature of ionizing radiation in Earth’s typical atmosphere. By signature, it is meant all the chemical reactions and physical processes that take place between Earth’s atmosphere and the ionizing radiation. This signature can potentially be used to identify a radiation source out in the field. The identification of a radiation source could potentially be used in a variety of defense applications. To characterize this …
The Suzuki And O’Connor Methods: A Foundational Comparison Of Methodology For The Beginning Violinist, Chelsea Goolcharan
The Suzuki And O’Connor Methods: A Foundational Comparison Of Methodology For The Beginning Violinist, Chelsea Goolcharan
Honors Theses
This research examines both the Suzuki and O’Connor violin methods for the beginner. Varying aspects of the methods are studied including theory, printed materials, recordings of the music to be played, observations of the methods in action, and the teacher’s approach to the beginner violinist. In both methods, teachers begin lessons with scales and progress to simple compositions. The differences lie in the musical genre taught, the vocabulary used, and notation style. The Suzuki method emphasizes a classical style while the O’Connor method focuses on improvisation. Both methods included both group and individual classes. One major difference in instruction is …
Exploring Various Techniques To Process And Identify Latent Friction Ridge Details From Fingers On Semi-Porous Surfaces, Emily Campo
Honors Theses
Numerous terrorist groups in the Middle East have been recently making detonators for IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) using items as basic as flip flops. Because of the semi-porous nature of flip flops, military forensic response teams have been unable to find an effective method through which they can identify, process, and lift latent fingerprints from the surface of a flip flop. The present study aims to use three fingerprint principles to formulate a reliable method that can be used for such purposes. This study specifically investigated the potential use of powders and cyanoacrylate fuming as processing techniques. The case study …
Using Pattern Area Ridge Flow In The Three Areas Of The Palm To Determine Classification Trends, Ashton Horton
Using Pattern Area Ridge Flow In The Three Areas Of The Palm To Determine Classification Trends, Ashton Horton
Honors Theses
Friction ridge skin is only located on the fingers, palms, and soles of feet. These ridges have been used to make identifications since before the twentieth century. These methods may be the basis of scientific testimony in court because of the amount of research that has been conducted in fingerprint identification. Courts uphold these techniques because of three principles behind fingerprint identification: fingerprints are unique because no two are the same, they will not change from the time they are formed in the womb until post-mortem decomposition, and they can be objectively classified using a general classification system. Little research …
Effects Of Acorns On Populations Of Aedes Mosquitoes, Rachel Rogers
Effects Of Acorns On Populations Of Aedes Mosquitoes, Rachel Rogers
Honors Theses
Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) and Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito) are two mosquito species that are non-native to North America and are of medical importance. Both species can be found in aquatic container habitats, such as discarded tires and tree holes. In container habitats, the influx of detritus from the outside environment is essential to mosquito production and can include a variety of plant and animal material. Seeds from oak trees (acorns) can seasonally contribute to the detritus of these container habitats. This study examined the effect of acorns from the southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) on the performance …
Perceptions Of College Students Towards Healthcare Provisions On Campus, Sarah Houtz
Perceptions Of College Students Towards Healthcare Provisions On Campus, Sarah Houtz
Honors Theses
Healthcare on university campuses is not a new concept. There is little evidence surrounding the effectiveness and adaptability of services provided to students by providers or healthcare facilities located on campus. Literature describes individual concepts of healthcare resources provided on campus including convenience, holistic care, abilities to refer to off campus specialty clinics, and factors related directly to the patient’s beliefs and values. However, there is a considerable gap in tools used to measure opinions directly related to the services, quality, perception, initiatives, and overall satisfaction with the provisions provided by healthcare professionals located on university campuses. Of the 23 …
Ghostbusting Black Women And Media Representation: A Qualitative Content Analysis On Leslie Jones And Twitter, Ebonee Jackson
Ghostbusting Black Women And Media Representation: A Qualitative Content Analysis On Leslie Jones And Twitter, Ebonee Jackson
Honors Theses
Media representation plays a huge role in how people form their views about certain groups of people. Even when one has particular personal experiences with said group, images in the media can reinforce those views or help to shape new ones. Social media are more recent when compared to other forms of media such as television, magazines and even music videos. Social media are fast paced and always advancing, and therefore, provide more opportunities to analyze a certain group’s media representation. In this thesis, I will discuss the media representation of Black women on Twitter. Specifically, I will look at …
Indicted Knights: Female Agency And The Adjudication Of Rape In Arthurian Romances, Jessica Carrell
Indicted Knights: Female Agency And The Adjudication Of Rape In Arthurian Romances, Jessica Carrell
Honors Theses
Although Arthurian Romance is a genre often thought to provide a somewhat idealized portrayal of the relationship between the sexes, there are a surprising number of instances of sexual assault represented in Middle English texts. In a genre styled towards women, it is appropriate to consider what cultural or social function the representations of such episodes serve. How, then, do such imaginative representations relate to the historical record of sexual assault accusations and adjudication? As this thesis demonstrates, examining past literary representations of the adjudication of sexual misconduct in Middle English romances such as Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur and Chaucer’s …

Thiol–Ene Photopolymerization: A Simple Route To Pro-Antimicrobial Networks Via Degradable Acetals (Pandas), William Martin
Honors Theses
The World Health Organization (WHO) has brought the growing epidemic of antibiotic resistance bacteria to the attention of the public and has expressed the need for the development of new methods of defense. In this direction, bioactive aldehyde essential oils have been shown to effectively act as antibiotic and antifungal agents. These bioactive compounds, when used in their pure form, are volatile and lack environmental stability. In this thesis, we describe the synthesis of pro-antimicrobial networks via degradable acetals (PANDAs) using thiol-ene photopolymerization. PANDAs were used as a new model for the high loading and release of bioactive aldehyde-containing compounds …
