Computer-Assisted Graphic Correlation Of Ordovician Conodonts And Graptolites From The Argentine Precordillera And Western Newfoundland Using Constrained Optimization (Conop9), Andrea Marie Bryan
Computer-Assisted Graphic Correlation Of Ordovician Conodonts And Graptolites From The Argentine Precordillera And Western Newfoundland Using Constrained Optimization (Conop9), Andrea Marie Bryan
Honors Theses
The correlation of rock units is the foundation of geological research. Correlation is the process of proving two geologic events are time equivalent. Most importantly, it is used to establish time boundaries in the geologic time scale. This paper uses computer assisted graphic correlation (CONOP9) to correlate the ages of graptolites and conodonts from the Ordovician found in rocks from the continent Laurentia, and arranges them in a composite range chart. These two organisms lived in different environments and, therefore, are found in different biofacies. The Argentine Precordillera and the western Newfoundland region are places where these two fossils co-exist …
The Cinderella Tale: Oral, Literary, And Film Traditions, Olivia Camille Williams
The Cinderella Tale: Oral, Literary, And Film Traditions, Olivia Camille Williams
Honors Theses
Folk and fairy tales have been told for centuries. The most prevalent medium of dispersing popular tales changed with technological advancements. Printed word superseded oral storytelling, to be succeeded by film. Some communal aspects of the tales were lost as print emerged, but with print came illustrations to describe the text. Film reimbued the tales with some of the theatrical elements of the oral tale while keeping, and heightening, the visual elements of the illustrated texts. The tale Cinderella has been, and still is, remarkably poplar. As such, it has received attention in academic circles and popular culture. The tale, …
The Effects Of Marine Natural Products On The Microenvironment Of Pancreatic Cancer, Whitney D. Davis, Esther Guzman
The Effects Of Marine Natural Products On The Microenvironment Of Pancreatic Cancer, Whitney D. Davis, Esther Guzman
Honors Theses
Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with that number increasing each year. New drugs need to be developed to treat this disease. One source of new drugs is marine natural products. Two compounds—HB-131 and HB-018—were tested for potential anti-cancer properties. Pancreatic cancer cells were exposed to these compounds for six hours and the conditioned media from this treatment was used to further our understanding of the effects of these compounds. A western blot was used to determine matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression, while a zymogram was used to determine MMP activity. A sandwich …
Character And Water Quality Of Sandpiper Pond: A Coastal Pond Assessment, Fifteen Years After Restoration, Nicholas E. Workman
Character And Water Quality Of Sandpiper Pond: A Coastal Pond Assessment, Fifteen Years After Restoration, Nicholas E. Workman
Honors Theses
Sandpiper Pond is a coastal pond at Huntington Beach State Park, South Carolina. Originally a tidal inlet surrounded by marshland, it was isolated in 1989 and rechanneled in 2004-2005 under a community-based wetland restoration project. The project was designed to restore the pond to a tidal inlet to improve water quality and biodiversity. Since then, the tidal connection with the ocean has been severed once more and the main influx of seawater occurs from the marsh during spring high tides. In this three-month study, the current state of Sandpiper Pond is evaluated using fundamental biogeochemical indicators that are indicative of …
Modulation Of Listeria Monocytogenes Carbon Metabolism By Short Chain Fatty Acids, Diksha Bedi
Modulation Of Listeria Monocytogenes Carbon Metabolism By Short Chain Fatty Acids, Diksha Bedi
Honors Theses
Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterial pathogen, is associated with foodborne infections in humans. Listeria encounters short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during its transit through the intestine but its metabolic responses to SCFAs are not fully understood. To determine how Listeria metabolism is affected by SCFAs, I performed basic microbiology assays, including monitoring optical density, determining acetoin production, and measuring culture pH levels. I also performed preliminary 13C-NMR assays to provide a more in-depth look into carbon metabolism in SCFA-treated Listeria. I found that propionate-supplemented Listeria produced significantly more acetoin compared to no supplemented controls. Because acetoin is a product of central …
Where Do We Put Our Flesh? Intersecting Feminism With Art And Contemporary Printmaking, Claire Bowman
Where Do We Put Our Flesh? Intersecting Feminism With Art And Contemporary Printmaking, Claire Bowman
Honors Theses
My work is concerned with the correlation of society’s standards for women, their bodies, and the resulting effects on their perception of themselves. Due in part to society’s obsession with a universal female beauty and the treatment of the body as an object to be controlled by the mind, many women experience a form self-objectification, putting their body through rigorous self-analysis in an attempt to target their perceived flaws. Through my chosen medium of relief printing, I endeavor to represent this objectification of the self and the detrimental effects it can have on the female presence in the world. In …
Perceiving Place: A Social Design Case Study, Mary Anne Brinkman
Perceiving Place: A Social Design Case Study, Mary Anne Brinkman
Honors Theses
Space is one of the most basic foundational systems for living things. No matter what happens in the world, it happens in a spatial setting. The specific design of that setting or place plays a large role in the lives of those within it.1 Other factors within place—factors that might inform design choices—also affect perception of place. Broad consensus exists in scholarly literature about the general role that history, culture, environment and social factors play into the perception of place. Past studies have supported that our perception of reality before actually observing it, actively affects the reality we then observe.2 …
Analysis Of Change In The Biodiversity Of Fish And Macroinvertebrates Following Low Dam Modification And Kayak Chute Installation In The Great Miami River In Downtown Dayton, Ohio, Madison E. Conway
Honors Theses
Over two years, from 2015-2017, the Miami Conservancy District and Five Rivers Metroparks completed a project to modify the low dam above Monument Avenue into a kayak chute and constructed a second, entirely new kayak chute about one-half mile upstream near Riverscape Metropark in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Low dams have a negative impact on river habitat by decreasing water velocity in the impoundment behind the dam. Physical habitat, which should consist of alternating pools and riffles, is disturbed and replaced by deeper, slower-moving water that accumulates deposits of sediment on the river bottom degrading its value as habitat. The conditions …
Intentionally So: Morality In Children’S Literature, Anna Edwards
Intentionally So: Morality In Children’S Literature, Anna Edwards
Honors Theses
There are tales that follow us from childhood and into adult life: they take the shape of children’s stories. Within these books there are moral lessons to be learned; often times these lessons are communicated through enchanting characters and strange settings. However, in addition to the morality that can be found in the pages of these texts, I believe there is also a morality surrounding their creation. More specifically, the way their authors approach their writing. By looking at the two works The Complete Adventures of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, a …

Energy Analysis And Orbit Simulation Of Actuating Cubesat Solar Arrays, Justin T. Ehren
Honors Theses
CubeSats are used in space research to explore new technologies and detect data to gain a better understanding of various areas of research and subjects affecting human life. CubeSats rely on a solar array to generate energy from the sun and perform their various functions in space. This research studies the energy capturing potential of various solar array configurations and positioning devices for CubeSats. The location and orientation of a CubeSat is simulated with MATLAB for both geo-synchronous and sunsynchronous orbits. Two degree-of-freedom (DoF) positioning devices are sufficient to continuously adjust the photovoltaic array to face towards the sun. Lower …
Generation Of Silver Nanoparticle Pharmacokinetic Profiles In A Lung Model, Rachel Galaska
Generation Of Silver Nanoparticle Pharmacokinetic Profiles In A Lung Model, Rachel Galaska
Honors Theses
Nanomaterial technologies are becoming increasingly prevalent in consumer and industrial applications, including drug delivery, energy harvesting, environmental applications, and medicine due to their unique physiochemical properties. As nanomaterial use increases, so too does human exposure. This has made it progressively more important to understand the toxicological effects of nanomaterials and their interactions with the human body. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most commonly used nanomaterials due to their antibacterial properties. As inhalation is one of the most common exposure routes, understanding the toxicity of these AgNPs on lung tissue was studied. Using A549 cells for a lung tissue …
Intelligence And Interpersonal Functioning In Youth And Young Adults With Varying Levels Of Psychopathic And Callous-Unemotional Traits, Marie Feyche
Honors Theses
The current study examined 30 youth and young adults ages 12-21 who were receiving therapy services at South Community, Inc. The intelligence and interpersonal functioning of individuals with varying levels of psychopathic and callous-unemotional (CU) traits was studied. Although there are a variety of conceptualizations of psychopathy, this study used the Triarchic Model of Psychopathy (TriPM), which defines the three factors of psychopathy as boldness, meanness, and disinhibition. CU traits are a downward extension of psychopathy, overlapping with the meanness factor, and are embodied by an absence of guilt, remorse, and the expression of superficial emotion. “Successful” psychopathy is a …
The Prickly Problem Of Pears Potential Effects Of Native Orthopteran Herbivory On An Invasive Woody Plant, Kaitlin Gawkins
The Prickly Problem Of Pears Potential Effects Of Native Orthopteran Herbivory On An Invasive Woody Plant, Kaitlin Gawkins
Honors Theses
Across the United States, land managers are struggling to cope with a relatively new invasive species, Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana). Callery pear is currently one of the most important invasive species threatening prairies and early successional habitats in Ohio and the Midwest, and yet, no viable means of control exists for this species. This species is relatively resistant to herbicides and resilient against prescribed cutting and burning. One potential management of invasive species is biocontrol, or the intentional introduction of natural enemies to control the growth and propagation of a target organism. Previous experiments with Callery Pear have examined herbivory …
The Number Of Fixed Points Of And-Or Networks With Chain Topology, Lauren Geiser
The Number Of Fixed Points Of And-Or Networks With Chain Topology, Lauren Geiser
Honors Theses
Boolean networks are sets of Boolean functions, which are functions that contain Boolean variables and the logical operators AND, OR, and NOT. In the simple case, the variables can be in one of two states—either 1 or 0, which can be interpreted in different ways such as ON or OFF, or TRUE or FALSE, depending on the application. Arranging model systems into Boolean functions, we can study steady states of these networks. This refers to the overall state of the dynamical system given an initial condition and another theoretical condition such as a subsequent point in time. Boolean networks have …

Pathogenic Differences In Listeria Monocytogenes 10403s And Cardiotropic Strains Grown Under Aerobic And Anaerobic Conditions, Alexander Hayes
Honors Theses
Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive bacillus that is commonly associated with foodborne illness. It is a facultative intracellular pathogen responsible for causing the listeriosis infection in humans which is particularly dangerous to immunocompromised individuals. L. monocytogenes pathogenesis occurs through a series of complex interactions between host and bacterial cellular machinery. The wild-type strain as well as a cardiotropic strain with high affinity for infecting cardiac tissue were used to investigate pathogenesis in L. monocytogenes. Specifically, the Listeriolysin O protein that is critical for virulence was investigated. Aerobic and anaerobic growth environments as well as short-chain fatty acid supplementation were utilized …
Drosophila Tumor Mosaic Models To Study Intercellular Interaction, Minh T.D. Ho
Drosophila Tumor Mosaic Models To Study Intercellular Interaction, Minh T.D. Ho
Honors Theses
Drosophila is a powerful genetic model system to study cancer. In patients, a small number of mutations accumulate in cells that change their growth characteristics and eventually lead to the formation of tumors. These tumors are clonal in origin, meaning the cancer arose from the proliferation of a single rogue cell. We have developed similar "clonal" cancer models in the Drosophila brain to study how tumor cells interact among each other and with their neighbors. To study such interactions, we need to tag the tumor cells and their neighboring cells. Such differentially marked clone-pairs or ‘twin-spots’ are ideal for genetic …
Cortisol Regulation Of Aquaglyceroporin Hc-3 Protein Expression In The Erythrocytes Of The Freeze Tolerant Tree Frog Dryophytes Chrysoscelis, Maria P. Labello
Cortisol Regulation Of Aquaglyceroporin Hc-3 Protein Expression In The Erythrocytes Of The Freeze Tolerant Tree Frog Dryophytes Chrysoscelis, Maria P. Labello
Honors Theses
Dryophytes chrysoscelis, commonly known as Cope’s gray treefrog, is a freeze tolerant anuran that freezes up to 65% of extracellular fluid during winter to survive. Glycerol is presumably used as a cryoprotectant during a period of cold-acclimation to protect cells from permanent damage due to hypoosmotic stress upon freezing and thawing. The passage of glycerol and water during cold-acclimation is mediated through aquaglyceroporin HC-3 in the nucleated erythrocytes (RBCs) of D. chrysoscelis. This thesis analyzes the mechanisms in which D. chrysoscelis prepares for cold-acclimation and glycerol synthesis. Cortisol is a stress hormone known to respond to osmolarity and metabolic challenges …
Misreading The Hybrid Face: The Alienation Of Performed And Authentic Self In Danzy Senna’S Caucasia And Chang-Rae Lee’S Native Speaker, William E. Landers
Misreading The Hybrid Face: The Alienation Of Performed And Authentic Self In Danzy Senna’S Caucasia And Chang-Rae Lee’S Native Speaker, William E. Landers
Honors Theses
Race is epistemological. It shapes worldviews, conceptions of self, and interactions with society. It defines who belongs in the national community and who counts as fully human. The myth of whiteness as a homogenizing and nativist identity creates false personas around and within racialized others. These personas define non-white populations according to exclusionary stereotypes. These stereotypes, in turn, separate populations based on appearance and cultural practice. This thesis applies Critical Race Theory and comparative racialization tools to examine the historical implications of race on the conception of an authentic, or internally true, identity. These implications are illustrated by the dynamics …
Analysis And Review Of The Effects Of Bacterial Competition On Efflux Pump Inhibition, Robert Leszcynski
Analysis And Review Of The Effects Of Bacterial Competition On Efflux Pump Inhibition, Robert Leszcynski
Honors Theses
Multidrug resistant antibacterial strains are a dangerous problem for modern medical professionals. When cells of two different strains are grown together, they must compete with each other for nutrients. This competition can lead to the production of harmful compounds that are toxic to the competing strain. One such compound may be a compound that inhibits the efflux of antibiotics from the cell. When the cells compete with one another, one or both of the cells will produce compounds that are harmful to the competing strain.
Tracking Disparate Colony Morphological Trends With Thermus Scotoductus, Matthew P. Leverick
Tracking Disparate Colony Morphological Trends With Thermus Scotoductus, Matthew P. Leverick
Honors Theses
When plating most mesophilic bacteria, the colony shape, size, and color tends to be uniform when a single strain is present. When plating defined cell densities of T. scotoductus, however, the colonies were not of uniform size and shape while it grew on the surface. In this project, we sought to observe trends in colony morphology (shape and size) changes using the thermophile Thermus scotoductus on nutrient rich agar plates at 60°C. A general planktonic growth curve was also created to help characterize the activity of this bacterium. This project was our first attempt to characterize if this unusual phenomenon …
Maternal Depression, Child Temperament, And Risk For Depression In Adolescence A Test Of The Differential Susceptibility Hypothesis, Karina Palermo
Maternal Depression, Child Temperament, And Risk For Depression In Adolescence A Test Of The Differential Susceptibility Hypothesis, Karina Palermo
Honors Theses
This study examines the relationship between maternal depression and offspring risk for depression. A child's difficult temperament may be especially challenging for a depressed mother. The depression, in combination with child difficult temperament, may cause changes in parenting styles that put the child at a greater risk for depression. The purpose of this study is to examine whether links between maternal depression, maternal parenting, and offspring risk for depression in adolescence vary according to child difficult temperament. It is predicted that maternal depression will be more strongly predictive of parenting deficits for mothers of children with difficult temperament. Furthermore, consistent …

Establishing The Effect Of Ethanol On Listeria Infection, Ryan Evan Restrepo
Honors Theses
Excessive alcohol consumption is common in the United States, particularly among college campuses. Previous studies have shown that excessive drinking increases the risk of drug dependency, sexual assault and liver damage. Heavy drinking has also proven to impact immune capabilities. Immune cell function and numbers have been shown to be negatively impacted by alcohol treatment. This research project used different cell cultures to model human cells and investigated how exposure to alcohol affects susceptibility to bacterial infection. Listeria monocytogenes, a common foodborne bacterium, was used as a model pathogen. A high alcohol preferring mouse model was also used to examine …

Honors Theses
Secondary traumatic stress (STS) can impact anyone who interacts with a victim of trauma, such as family, friends, first responders, or social workers. This project ultimately aims to determine whether or not the opioid crisis impacts the levels of secondary traumatic stress in children services workers. This research examines STS in current children services workers who work directly with victims of child abuse or neglect alongside how frequently children services workers are exposed to opioid-related cases in their professional lives. Data for this project were gathered by administering a survey to two area children services agencies to assess the STS …
Flourishing The Urban Environment: How Urban Gardens Affect Pollinators, Emily Ann Rickert
Flourishing The Urban Environment: How Urban Gardens Affect Pollinators, Emily Ann Rickert
Honors Theses
The order of Hymenoptera is classified as bees, wasps, and ants and are widely recognized as pollinators. Some species of bees (family Apoidea) and hoverflies tend to focus on certain types of flowers and are attracted to patterns and colors. Native plants and crops that are specifically bee-friendly can encourage bees and other pollinators that are decreasing in biodiversity and population to come back. Urban gardens work to provide vegetables and organic produce to its communities and subsequently are also growing pollinator-friendly food. This study focuses on whether the biodiversity of Hymenoptera, hoverflies, and other significant pollinators are affected by …
Boron Dipyrromethenes: Synthesis And Computational Analysis, Eduardo Rivé Lockwood
Boron Dipyrromethenes: Synthesis And Computational Analysis, Eduardo Rivé Lockwood
Honors Theses
Recently, there has been a growing interest in the boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY, 4,4′- difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) compounds. BODIPY compounds have fascinating properties that allow for the absorption and emission of light in the near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. These molecules are highly modifiable making them ideal chemicals for the use of photoelectric energy conversion such as for commercial use in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It has been previously shown that different meso compounds have only a slight effect on the absorptive capabilities of these BODIPY compounds. We believe that the BODIPY compounds’ lack of planarity is one of the …
The Effect Of Remote Ischemic Preconditioning On Exercise Hyperemia In Multiple Sclerosis, Jane E. Rosmarin
The Effect Of Remote Ischemic Preconditioning On Exercise Hyperemia In Multiple Sclerosis, Jane E. Rosmarin
Honors Theses
Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is a non-invasive technique in which blood flow is cut off to a limb for a short period of time which produces a protective effect throughout the whole body to subsequent low oxygen conditions. One of the prominent cardiovascular limitations to exercise in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) is fatigue, which may stem from the decreased delivery of oxygen to muscle tissue during exercise. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that RIPC would increase forearm blood flow (FBF) and utilization of oxygen at the level of the muscle tissue in individuals with …
Effect Of Activated Carbon On The Performance Of A Solar Thermal Adsorptive Refrigerator (Star) Using Activated Carbon-Ethanol, Joshua Romo
