Do Negative Perceptions Of Students' Built Environment Affect Their Health Status?, Karissa Hunt
Do Negative Perceptions Of Students' Built Environment Affect Their Health Status?, Karissa Hunt
Honors Theses
Research suggests that the social determinants of health should be evaluated in order to combat health disparities for disadvantaged populations. The five social determinants of health are economic stability, education, health and healthcare, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context. Research has been done concerning built environment’s impact on health, however little research has been done on college student’s perception of their campus built environment and how it impacts their health. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between negative perceptions of built environment and poor student health statuses, and if so …
The '24' Effect: How Entertainment Media Affects The Public Perception Of Torture, Thien-Kim T. Tran
The '24' Effect: How Entertainment Media Affects The Public Perception Of Torture, Thien-Kim T. Tran
Honors Theses
This thesis highlights how entertainment media perpetuates the public perception that the use of torture is an effective method to gain valuable and actionable intelligence from enemy combatants. This poses a significant problem to society because torture does not work, and if society continues to believe this misperception, it may lead to the erosion of societal morals for future generations. A possible explanation for entertainment media’s role in the continuation of this misperception could be related to the mere exposure effect due to frequency of torture being seen on television. In order to see how entertainment media perpetuates this misperception, …
The Influence Of Wearing A Fitbit On Eating Behaviors While Stressed, Maria C.M. Sparacino
The Influence Of Wearing A Fitbit On Eating Behaviors While Stressed, Maria C.M. Sparacino
Honors Theses
Research has demonstrated stress leads to consuming foods of lower nutritional quality as well as a greater quantity of foods. Visual primes have been shown to reduce these detrimental eating behaviors. The present study sought to determine if a fitbit would prime healthy eating behaviors in stressful situations. Participants (N = 41) were randomly assigned to a high or low stress condition, manipulated through the Stroop Test, and were either given a fitbit prime or not. Participant’s food preferences were assessed with the Macronutrient Preference Checklist- Modified for use in North America following the stress manipulation. The results generally …
The Influence Of The Law In American Literature And Culture, Emily Johnson, Steven Hamelman
The Influence Of The Law In American Literature And Culture, Emily Johnson, Steven Hamelman
Honors Theses
This piece explores the relationship between law and its influence within American literature and the overall culture. Themes of discrimination, corruption, greed, advocacy, and incriminating evidence, present in the analyzed texts and films, greatly plays into the American public’s perception of their judicial system. Is it truly the law influencing American literature and culture, or is it the sentiments of the masses influencing the legal field itself? This work aims at analyzing this question, while also making a point to explain what American citizens can do with such influence and knowledge.

An Examination Of Western Michigan University's Financial Statements, Jordan Farrel
Honors Theses
In the attempt to fulfill the university’s mission, the leaders must constantly balance each decision and its effect on the various stakeholders at the university. Students, faculty, and outside enterprises all want what is best for themselves, and sometimes those wants can clash. In order to ensure that the university is allocating its resources in a way that is beneficial to stakeholders collectively and focuses on the long-term, financial analysis can be done on the university’s annual financial reports. The financial reports for universities experienced massive changes in the early to late 1990s as the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) …
Arousal And Anxiety Level Influences On Golf Putting Performance, Chloe Paulsen, Ryan M. Yoder
Arousal And Anxiety Level Influences On Golf Putting Performance, Chloe Paulsen, Ryan M. Yoder
Honors Theses
Arousal levels can help and hinder performance in various sports and many athletes manipulate arousal levels during practice or competitions. Professional golfers typically putt in complete silence but studies have shown that stimulus can help performance. Twelve participants completed general and sport anxiety questionnaires before completing 3 golf putts at a target under 30 seconds with a music stimulus for each group. Music stimulus had an affect on the moderate arousal level groups showing the best performance with the slowest time to complete the putting task. This shows that putting may be performed better with moderate auditory arousal to produce …
Synthesizing Multifunctional Iron Oxide Nanodrugs And Developing A Model For Their Size Analysis Using Dynamic Light Scattering, Olivia George
Synthesizing Multifunctional Iron Oxide Nanodrugs And Developing A Model For Their Size Analysis Using Dynamic Light Scattering, Olivia George
Honors Theses
The growth of targeted drug delivery methods in modern cancer treatments has been the result of an increase in the quantity of drugs available, which is directly affected by the methods used in drug development. These drugs vary in size, shape, and mechanism of operation, so the characterizing techniques used must be adaptable to a variety of particle types. In this thesis, a variety of complex nanostructures were synthesized and characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS), which is a rapid, non-destructive, and simply-operated size characterization method that does not introduce artifacts from sample preparation. The DLS data was then analyzed …
A Historical Analysis Of Non-Normative Embodiment Through The Lens Of Frankenstein’S Creature, Ashley H. Hobson
A Historical Analysis Of Non-Normative Embodiment Through The Lens Of Frankenstein’S Creature, Ashley H. Hobson
Honors Theses
A trend to historicize the field of Disability Studies has emerged in recent years. However, little research has been done to place different societies and generations in conversation with one another. This thesis will utilize various adaptations of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in order to explore shifting anxieties concerning non-normative embodiment through the vessel of the Creature. I examine the Creature’s changing physical form next to scientific and medical literature of the period to explore connotations of disability and otherness within that society. I consider the manifestation of anxieties towards non-normative embodiment through Mary Shelley’s 1831 Frankenstein, James Whale’s 1931 …
Academic Feminists Analyses Of Female Celebrities From The 1980s To Today, Brittany A. Carey
Academic Feminists Analyses Of Female Celebrities From The 1980s To Today, Brittany A. Carey
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the history of academic feminists and their changing debates over race, class, sexism, and sexual preference from the 1980s to the present. In the 1980s, white feminists tended to focus on sexism in the workplace and class discrimination, while black feminists focused instead on the racism and classism that black women faced both inside and outside of academia. More recently, millennial feminists, in both third- and fourth-wave feminism, have continued to focus on racial discrimination within feminism (and broader society) while also examining women’s sexual preferences. However, they have stopped focusing on sexism in the workplace and …
Women’S Resistance: Patient Pathographies And Medical Authority, Anna Claire Elliott
Women’S Resistance: Patient Pathographies And Medical Authority, Anna Claire Elliott
Honors Theses
In recent years, illness narratives have risen in popularity. Women’s medical narratives in particular have gained momentum in the literary world, and they often share commonalities including the inherent theme of medical resistance and an emphasis on the power dynamic between patients and physicians. This thesis will examine two pathographies, Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted and Porochista Khakpour’s Sick, in the contexts of gender and disability studies, as well as theories of illness narratives. I examine how each text resists medical authority, and I also closely survey the physician-patient relationships within each text. The themes of gender and disability emerge …

Microrna Identification And Target Prediction In The Whitefly (Bemisia Tabaci), Alexis Aleman
Microrna Identification And Target Prediction In The Whitefly (Bemisia Tabaci), Alexis Aleman
Honors Theses
RNA interference, referred to as RNAi, is a biological phenomenon whereby knock-down of gene expression can be achieved through the use of RNA molecules, including small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs). The use of miRNAs is an endogenous pathway that results in the degradation of the miRNA strand’s complementary messenger RNA (mRNA), preventing the translation of the mRNA and therefore the production of the proteins necessary for gene expression. While RNAi is a biological phenomenon that occurs naturally, it is also a method that can be used and manipulated in the laboratory to try to control the expression of …

Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Isolated From Michigan Birds - A High School Learning Experience, Cody Benfant
Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Isolated From Michigan Birds - A High School Learning Experience, Cody Benfant
Honors Theses
Bacteria, extremely small prokaryotic cells, are everywhere throughout the world. One striking thing about bacteria is their size: comparing a 2-micrometer bacterial cell to a 6-foot-tall human is similar in scale to comparing a 6-foot-tall human to the distance between Chicago, IL and Denver, CO! Despite their small size, bacteria are found in almost every ecosystem and environment imaginable. From deep sea hydrothermal vents to the clouds miles in the sky, there are trillions of bacteria flourishing in all of Earth’s ecosystems, performing many important functions in global nutrient cycles. While the majority of bacteria are beneficial to humans, …

Each class was given the same survey at the beginning and end of the fall semester. Results indicated …
Analysis Of Septum Defects In Arabidopsis Organ Boundary Mutants, Katherine T. Anderson
Analysis Of Septum Defects In Arabidopsis Organ Boundary Mutants, Katherine T. Anderson
Honors Theses
Arabidopsis thaliana, a model plant species, has been heavily studied to determine the genetic contributions that lead to gynoecium development. The Arabidopsis fruit is created from two carpels that form a gynoecium, which contains the stigma, style, and ovary. The ovary is divided into two sub-compartments by a septum, and the ovules develop within the ovary. The fruit’s purpose is to protect, nurture, and eventually disperse the mature ovules, or seeds, and if the septum does not fuse properly, the plant’s fertility will be impacted. SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (STM) and ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA HOMEOBOX GENE1 (ATH1) are two genes that are known …

Auditory Radiation And Cognitive Decline: Probabilistic Tractography Study, Adryanna Tucker
Honors Theses
The relationship between hearing loss and Alzheimer’s disease has been studied for many years. Previous studies have shown a negative correlation between the two. In our study, we investigated the relationship between the strength of the auditory radiation connections and the severity of cognitive decline. To do so, we assessed probabilistic tractography using DTI data of the primary auditory pathway. Further, we assessed the level of cognition using the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cog to determine the relationship between the auditory connections assessed in each patient and that patient’s level of cognitive decline. We found that FA and AD were positively …

Increased atmospheric CO2 has been the result of prominent usage of fossil fuels as a fuel source. As fossil fuels are a nonrenewable energy source, scientists are looking towards more renewable energy resources capable of both efficiently producing energy and reducing atmospheric CO2-emissions. A photocatalyst with an earth-abundant metal capable of chemically reducing CO2 paired with only water and photon inputs would provide a solution to these pressing issues. Here, studies were performed on three catalysts, each with a nickel metal center. Each catalyst went through a series of photocatalytic tests in various conditions to identify whether a catalyst was …

The development of cultural humility can help mitigate disparities because it promotes self-awareness, reflection, and engagement in an on-going learning process. Implicit …
A Case For A Moral Theory Of Property: How Digital Copyright Reveals The Insufficiency Of Hume's Pragmatic Justification Of Ownership, Mattew Davis
Honors Theses
This paper addresses the following questions: Why does property exist? How does one come to own something? In it, the author attempts to answer these questions by comparing the property theories of political theorists John Locke and David Hume with modern U.S. copyright law, with a special focus on digital copyrights. The purpose of this comparison is to identify principles and explanations of property that are consistent between seventeenth- and eighteenth-century political theories and modern laws. The product of this comparison is the discovery that Locke, Hume, and U.S. Copyright Law either use labor as a metric for ownership or …
