Emotion Regulation Among Adults With Asthma: Links With Short-Acting Inhaler Medication Overuse And Utilization Of Acute Medical Care, Victoria A. Green
Honors Theses
Effective control of asthma symptoms requires daily self-management activities, including use of short-acting or “rescue” inhaled medications. Overuse of short-acting inhaled medications, such as albuterol, can have negative side-effects, including respiratory infections and worse asthma symptom control. Existing research suggests that emotion plays an important role in airway inflammation and asthma symptom control. The objective of this study was to determine whether difficulties regulating emotion was associated with overuse of short-acting inhaled medications and acute medical care usage in adults with asthma. The sample included 401 adults with asthma recruited from an online panel of adults with chronic respiratory disease. …

Lc-Ms/Ms Method Development And Analysis Of Tricyclic Antidepressants In Human Plasma, Shahbaz Gul
Honors Theses
Depression has become one of the most prominent problems in society, disrupting both personal and social lives. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) were first developed in the 1950’s and became some of the leading anti-depressant medications on the market later that decade. Today, newer anti-depressants have risen to the forefront, being safer and having a lower side-effect probability. Nonetheless, TCAs continue to be prescribed for severe depression, especially in cases where the newer anti-depressants have failed. However, TCAs are still highly potent, the toxicity associated with these compounds cannot be ignored. They have considerable cardiovascular and neurological toxicity, and in the event …

Responses To Fine Particulate Matter (Pm2.5) Exposures In Two Wild-Type Zebrafish Strains, Connor Necaise
Honors Theses
Atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure poses great health risks across the globe, causing both acute and chronic illnesses in humans. Therefore, a more complete understanding of the mechanisms in which PM2.5 induces these adverse health effects is urgently needed. Oxidative stress due to PAHs and other common components of PM2.5 is a proposed mechanism for its adverse health effects. However, little is known about the actual mechanisms of PM2.5 damage in humans. This study aimed to distinguish behavioral differences in two lines of zebrafish (AB & 5D) as a result of developmental exposure to …

With the sudden emergence of Covid-19, Tele-Health has been forced into the forefront of healthcare. With no human contact, regular in-person doctor or clinic visits could not be made. Unfortunately, there is a gap in patient data for healthcare professionals when making diagnoses remotely. Fortunately, many users are constantly collecting some primary health data through wearables that have become commonplace in users' homes. Tapping into this unused data could provide healthcare professionals with a better picture of patients' health remotely. In this thesis, I will determine whether this wearable data can be a viable addition to Tele-Health applications, providing additional …
Duality In Digital Discourse: The History And Future Of The American Public Forum, Nicholas Weaver
Duality In Digital Discourse: The History And Future Of The American Public Forum, Nicholas Weaver
Honors Theses
From the onset of the republic, the liberty to speak freely and debate openly has stood guard and helped preserve all other American rights. While this concept has endured, the means by which it exists in society has changed immensely. As the public forum has evolved to fit the modern needs of the citizenry, political discourse has become less a defense against tyranny and more a chaotic space of conflicting opinions.
In the United States, privately-owned social media companies have grown at an unprecedented rate, yet lawmakers have been slow to exercise any authority to regulate these corporations. For public …
Implementation Evaluation Of Blood Flow Restriction In The Clinical Setting, Madison Mccall
Implementation Evaluation Of Blood Flow Restriction In The Clinical Setting, Madison Mccall
Honors Theses
Blood flow restriction (BFR) refers to a relatively new training/rehabilitation method consisting of a tourniquet system applied to a limb to partially inhibit blood flow to the muscles distal to the tourniquet. Though much research has been conducted concerning its use, there is little information addressing why clinicians may or may not implement it. Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory explains how a product or idea can spread to specific population groups, ending in adoption of it. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) consists of a set of constructs which can be used to determine the specific factors involved in …

Repurposing Antiplatelet Drugs To Treat Platelet Mediated Metastasis, Brianna Chambers
Repurposing Antiplatelet Drugs To Treat Platelet Mediated Metastasis, Brianna Chambers
Honors Theses
By applying cardiovascular drugs, which already have been proven effective and safe, to other diseases we can speed the drug discovery process, specifically to translate them into treatments for platelet-mediated metastasis. Each cardiovascular drug within antiplatelet drugs, targets one of the four following pathways: COX-1, thromboxane, P2Y12, or thrombin. There has been varying levels of success with treating adenocarcinomas like breast and colorectal cancer. Continued success in treatment could be the result of pharmacogenetics and further evaluation of dosage levels. By isolating mutation rates in various adenocarcinomas there is the possibility of a targeted treatment based on the mutated gene.

Improving The Efficacy Of Epinephrine Delivery For Anaphylaxis Through Development Of A Novel Auto-Injector Device And Increased User Education, Jennifer Ansley Myers
Honors Theses
Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s overreaction to a certain allergen. The most widely accepted treatment for this condition is immediate administration of epinephrine, a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands that initiates the body’s fight or flight response, through an intramuscular injection. In most cases, patients that experience anaphylaxis are prescribed an epinephrine auto-injector to carry with them at all times which contains a single dose of epinephrine. Though these devices have been widely accepted for many years, there are many problems caused by their design and the lack of training that their users receive. The …
A Weighted Version Of Erdős-Kac Theorem, Unique Subedi
A Weighted Version Of Erdős-Kac Theorem, Unique Subedi
Honors Theses
Let $\omega(n)$ denote the number of distinct prime factors of a natural number $n$. A celebrated result of Erd{\H o}s and Kac states that $\omega(n)$ as a Gaussian distribution. In this thesis, we establish a weighted version of Erd{\H o}s-Kac Theorem. Specifically, we show that the Gaussian limiting distribution is preserved, but shifted, when $\omega(n)$ is weighted by the $k-$fold divisor function $\tau_k(n)$. We establish this result by computing all positive integral moments of $\omega(n)$ weighted by $\tau_k(n)$.
We also provide a proof of the classical identity of $\zeta(2n)$ for $n \in \mathbb{N}$ using Dirichlet's kernel.

Examining The Role Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Unc13 Protein In Open Field Activity Using Rnai, Islam Orabi
Honors Theses
Unc13 are proteins in the presynaptic neurons essential in controlling synaptic vesicle fusion and synaptic transmission. Recently, the reduction of Drosophila melanogaster Unc13 proteins (Dunc13), were found to result in a resistance to alcohol, highly reminiscent of tolerance formation. I investigated whether genetically reducing Dunc13 activity in Drosophila brain regions leads to different forms of behavioral plasticity using an open field activity paradigm. In my approach, a Dunc13 RNAi transgene was expressed in the Drosophila brain within the mushroom body, the ellipsoid body, and in all neurons. The activities of the flies were examined in the open field paradigm to …
