Exploring Mental Health & Covid-19: How A Pandemic Could Become America's Next Mental Health Crisis, Ashley D. Shofner May 2021

Exploring Mental Health & Covid-19: How A Pandemic Could Become America's Next Mental Health Crisis, Ashley D. Shofner

Honors Theses

A pandemic can be described as an epidemic disease that has spread over a large geographical area and has become prevalent in numerous sectors of the globe. In 2020, just over 100 years since our last major pandemic, the 1918 Influenza outbreak, the global community is facing yet another threat: COVID-19. While an individual’s physical health has consistently been of concern, research has failed to adequately consider the other dimensions of health. Among these additional dimensions of health is mental health and psychosocial wellbeing.

Pandemics and emerging infectious diseases have become modern influencers of mental health patterns. By analyzing the …

Birth Experiences In Kentucky: An Ethnography Of Healthcare, Trauma, And Healing, Breanna Bowling May 2021

Birth Experiences In Kentucky: An Ethnography Of Healthcare, Trauma, And Healing, Breanna Bowling

Honors Theses

A traumatic birth experience can occur for a multitude of reasons. For example, it may stem from a communication issue, lack of consent to procedures, or a birth plan gone wrong, or it may even be due to the inherently hierarchical structure of western medicine. Whatever the cause, traumatic birth narratives serve not only as therapeutic mechanisms for the sufferer, but also as a means to use the lessons learned from the lived experiences of people to improve care in the future. Composed of information specific to Kentucky, this research examines the causes of traumatic births and gives voice to …

Investigating The Effects Of A P53 Mutation And Various Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors On Glioma Progression And Therapy Resistance In Drosophila, Kaitlyn M. Alleman May 2021

Investigating The Effects Of A P53 Mutation And Various Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors On Glioma Progression And Therapy Resistance In Drosophila, Kaitlyn M. Alleman

Honors Theses

Gliomas, which are brain tumors that arise from glial cells, are some of the most aggressive and lethal types of tumors. These brain tumors are difficult to treat because not enough information regarding the mutations present in these tumors exists. This project studies effects of a p53 mutation on Drosophila glioma progression and then will test to see if this results in resistance to current chemotherapy. The main goal of this endeavor is to investigate the numerous defects occurring at the cellular and biochemical level in gliomas, which will give insight into why these types of tumors are so difficult …

Isolating And Manipulating Microorganisms Using Ureolysis For Creating Extraterrestrial Microbial Biotechnology Systems, Nina M. Wendel May 2021

Isolating And Manipulating Microorganisms Using Ureolysis For Creating Extraterrestrial Microbial Biotechnology Systems, Nina M. Wendel

Honors Theses

The conversion of CO2 into valuable feedstocks, such as high energy sugars would create paradigm shifting technologies for applications on earth and for interplanetary exploration. Microbes and microbe consortia may be one way to accomplish this conversion. Approximately 70% of the Earth’s microorganisms live in the dark marine biosphere (DMB). The DMB, which covers more than two-thirds of the Earth, is known as the most isolated region of the Earth’s largest CO2 sink. Despite its role in reducing CO2 and its vast majority of microorganisms, only about 5% of the sea floor has been explored. Due to the limited knowledge …

Analysis Of The Evolutaion Of Scope Management And Needs Identification In Agile Methodologies, Nolan B. Scott

Honors Theses

Identifying stakeholders, identifying metrics, and analyzing specific aspects of agile development. This has led to a variety of questions around scope management such as "How do scope changes impact the velocity throughout the course of a project?", "What factors help determine the overall viability of adopting different scope measures?", and "What are the roles of project owners and managers in facilitating scope changes in project cycles?" This research encompasses a review of previous literature, an analysis of structured project progression, and semi-structured interviews in order to investigate the evolution of scope management and needs identification in agile methodologies.

The Effects Of Helicopter Parenting In Emerging Adulthood: An Investigation Of The Roles Of Involvement And Perceived Intrusiveness, Abigail T. Flower May 2021

The Effects Of Helicopter Parenting In Emerging Adulthood: An Investigation Of The Roles Of Involvement And Perceived Intrusiveness, Abigail T. Flower

Honors Theses

The term “helicopter parent” describes parents who provide extensive support with high constraint to their children with a variety of possible negative outcomes (Comstock, 2019). The present study examined the effects of intensive (i.e., “helicopter”) parenting among emerging college-aged adults by comparing evaluative and descriptive measures of intensive parenting and examining their differential associations with college students’ achievement and well-being. There were three main hypotheses of the study. First, I predicted that perceptions of parental intrusiveness, captured by an evaluative measure, would be more strongly correlated with negative outcomes (e.g., poorer grades, greater depression etc.) than would the frequency and …

Adultification And Criminalization Of Young Black Girls: Using Culturally Responsive Education To Empower Adolescent Girls In Urban Schools, Jordan Bailes May 2021

Adultification And Criminalization Of Young Black Girls: Using Culturally Responsive Education To Empower Adolescent Girls In Urban Schools, Jordan Bailes

Honors Theses

Within the education system and society, Black girls face higher levels of discipline and criminalization than students of other races or genders. The African American Policy Forum found that during the 2011-2012 school year in Boston, Black girls made up only 28% of enrollment, but faced 61% of all discipline, while white females made up 15% of enrollment and only 5% of all discipline (Crenshaw 19). This inequity can be credited to higher expectations for young black girls due to societal adultification. In her book Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, Monique W. Morris defines adultification as “Black …

Acute Effects Of Static Stretching/Foam Rolling On Muscle And Tendon Stiffness, Michaela Lawlor

Honors Theses

There are various ways to decrease muscle and tendon stiffness, including but not limited to: static stretching, ballistic stretching, cycle stretching, passive and active stretching, and foam rolling. The purpose of this paper is to review different studies that focus on the acute effects of static stretching and foam rolling on muscles of the leg including the gastrocnemius, rectus femoris, hamstrings, soleus, etc. Results showed that static stretching and foam rolling decrease muscle and tendon stiffness in the leg while simultaneously increasing their range of motion, flexibility, and muscle fascicle length immediately after exercise.

Organic Matter Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Coastal Sands Of Long Bay, South Carolina, Kayla B. Christofferson May 2021

Organic Matter Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Coastal Sands Of Long Bay, South Carolina, Kayla B. Christofferson

Honors Theses

Sandy coastlines serve crucial functions to coastal economies and coastal ecology alike. In the past, organic-poor sands were considered of lower importance than organic-rich muds. Recent studies showed that sands’ low organic matter concentrations are due to high biogeochemical cycling rates, driven by rapid physical exchange, but remain infrequently studied. I present time-series of sand mass-loss-on-ignition (LOI, an organic matter proxy) profiles from February 2017 onwards at multiple sites along Long Bay, South Carolina. LOI profiles exhibit subsurface maximum values, unlike the typical decrease with depth in muddy sediments. I hypothesize that organic matter distribution with depth is affected by …

From Prop To Partner: The Evolution Of Female Roles In American Opera, Mariah J. Berryman May 2021

From Prop To Partner: The Evolution Of Female Roles In American Opera, Mariah J. Berryman

Honors Theses

For many years, women in opera have been in service to their plots. They have always been present but have either been relegated to passive roles in their own stories or actively considered societal outcasts. They were dramatically stereotyped as either airheads or witches, mothers or daughters, love interests or foes to be conquered. And, along with the character stereotypes came typically associated vocal stereotypes. Lighter and higher voices were assigned to roles that portrayed virtue, innocence, and other general characteristics of the “feminine ideal.” Conversely, lower voices were assigned to sinful, outcast, “fallen women.” These vocal stereotypes are especially …

Propeller And Propeller-In-Wing Thrust Vectoring, Grace G. Culpepper May 2021

Propeller And Propeller-In-Wing Thrust Vectoring, Grace G. Culpepper

Honors Theses

This research investigates the efficiency of a vane-based thrust vectoring system set in the wake of a propeller, supporting forward force at a minimum loss in net thrust. The vectoring system itself is placed in both a standalone propeller configuration and a propeller-in-wing configuration. Both static and wind-on force-based experiments are conducted at the University of Dayton Low Speed Wind Tunnel (UD-LSWT) with off-the-shelf R/C propellers. Sensitivity analysis determines both the effect of vane deflection angle on thrust vectoring and the effect of propeller placement with respect to the upper surface of the integrated wing on system performance. Static test …

It Crits Different: Analysis Of Dungeons & Dragons And Tabletop Roleplaying Games As An Oral, Collaborative, And Immersive Genre Of Literacy, Olivia Haslett

Honors Theses

With the introduction of multimodality enhancements to literature, such as e-books and audiobooks, alongside the resurgence of Tabletop Roleplaying Games such as Dungeons & Dragons, there has been little consideration for how these two seemingly unrelated fields marry into a new opportunity for literary development. These games often have a fundamental purpose: storytelling. Storytelling has long since been an oral tradition which has been converted into its literary form: books. Books tell us their story without the need of company and are often written by a sole author. However, with more and more Tabletop RPGs coming into popularity, storytelling is …

Shining A Light Into The Darkness: The Developmental Impacts Of Internment In U.S. Immigration Detention Centers On Detained Latinx Children, Rebecca Messer

Honors Theses

Americans are concerned about immigration politics and how to handle the migration of immigrants into the United States, especially those from Latinx countries who immigrate illegally. In response, the United States government has formed detention centers to house the children of these illegal immigrants. While the immediate safety and developmental appropriateness of current separation practices are of concern, few have considered what the long-term developmental and transgenerational impacts on Latinx immigrant children, held within these detention centers, will be. This thesis concludes that the negative physical, emotional, and psychological impacts both in the short and long terms are expected to …

Reparations, Jhedienne Adams May 2021

Reparations, Jhedienne Adams

Honors Theses

This collection of original poems is a testament to the tenacity of Black American women. It deals with the connection between personal and collective identities, and attempts to make tangible the pervasive themes of racial oppression, familial tension, societal vulnerability, and hope that are uniquely found in the experiences of southern Black women. This collection began as an exploration of transgenerational trauma, and while the final project addresses that theme, it is primarily an exercise in grappling with the modern manifestations of a complex history, a process with an importance that grew exceedingly more obvious as the nation faced a …

Counselors' Experiences Of A Virtual Summer Camp, Catherine Bell May 2021

Counselors' Experiences Of A Virtual Summer Camp, Catherine Bell

Honors Theses

Youth with developmental disabilities (DD) often have limited opportunities for social support and community engagement. Summer camps to meet their specific needs - physical, social or emotional - are intended to help reduce this limitation and provide youth with DD the same opportunities as typical children. The COVID-19 pandemic caused many camps and organizations to prohibit in-person or face-to-face activities, and as a result, Camp Ability created a virtual platform for campers to still engage in a summer camp experience. Camp Ability’s counselors (n = 5) were interviewed at the conclusion of the camp session, and three major themes were …

Simplifying The Creation Of Virtual Topologies Using Mpi Sessions, Tom Herschberg May 2021

Simplifying The Creation Of Virtual Topologies Using Mpi Sessions, Tom Herschberg

Honors Theses

As supercomputers have approached exascale performance, several scalability issues have emerged within MPI. These issues arise because MPI includes all processes in the World model, which consumes unacceptable amounts of time and resources at large scale. The Sessions model was developed to combat these issues by removing the requirement of MPI_COMM_WORLD, which provides a more scalable method of creating communication groups in large jobs. Additionally, the Sessions model enables the creation of virtual topologies directly from sets of processes allocated to the execution of a parallel application rather than building virtual topologies from an existing communication group such as MPI_COMM_WORLD. …

Isolated Point Discharges Into Coastal Swashes As Nutrient Sources To Coastal Waters, Mary E. Olsen May 2021

Isolated Point Discharges Into Coastal Swashes As Nutrient Sources To Coastal Waters, Mary E. Olsen

Honors Theses

Coastal water quality in the Grand Strand of South Carolina is directly influenced by human activities. Nutrient-rich runoff, stemming from numerous anthropogenic sources, finds its way into coastal waters through freshwater inputs often through tidal creeks, termed swashes. In order to better describe the amount of nutrient inputs into Singleton Swash and White Point Swash, we examine anthropogenic runoff from isolated identifiable point discharges and their nutrient concentrations. We report concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, as the sum of nitrate, nitrite and ammonium) and phosphate in discharge and creek water. We hypothesize that nutrient concentrations of isolated, minor point …

Exploring How Popular Media Affects The Motivations And Hesitations Of Women Who Go Through Sorority Recruitment At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Whitley W. Howell

Honors Theses

Fraternity and sorority life is an important part of many college students’ experiences. Sororities provide college women with many opportunities for leadership, service, academics, and growth. Even though sororities have many benefits, they often have negative connotations in popular and social media. Often, these negative stereotypes affect people’s perception of sororities, and many women have hesitations about joining a sorority because of the way sororities are portrayed.

Sorority women express concern with the media’s negative representation of Greek life. The negative connotations affect how people see the sororities. Recruitment of new women into the chapters is an important part of …

To Suppress Riots And Insurrections: Development And Transformation In Mississippi’S State Militia, 1865-1890, Alec J. Blaylock May 2021

To Suppress Riots And Insurrections: Development And Transformation In Mississippi’S State Militia, 1865-1890, Alec J. Blaylock

Honors Theses

This thesis argues that Mississippi’s state militia after the American Civil War developed into a functional arm of the state to supplant extralegal paramilitary groups. However, that militia transformed between 1865 and 1890 from an organization devoted to protecting African-American political and civil rights into a mechanism for the enforcement of white supremacy. Mississippi’s Constitution of 1868 made the governor Commander-in-Chief of the state militia and designated that one of the militia’s responsibilities was “to suppress riots and insurrections.” While the law provided other reasons for using the militia, this thesis argues that Mississippi’s governors only used the militia to …

Engaged Pedagogy And Teacher Discourse: A Critical Examination Of Public Education In Mississippi, Kelsi Ford May 2021

Engaged Pedagogy And Teacher Discourse: A Critical Examination Of Public Education In Mississippi, Kelsi Ford
