Given the current state of the economy and Americans’ “workaholic” culture, it is not unreasonable for Kentuckians to be stressed in the workplace. Is it true that Kentuckians are stressed and dissatisfied with their jobs, or are workers simply pessimistic? The purpose of this study is to determine the satisfaction of Kentuckians with their current jobs, characteristics of their job which may impact satisfaction, and explore solutions to create healthier relationships between workers and their jobs. During the early modern period (late 16th, early 17th century), England embroiled itself in conflict with Spain, contesting against each other through direct competition and expanding their territories elsewhere. The topic of this thesis is an analysis of Richard Hakluyt, a writer and geographer during Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, and his role as a proponent of English expansionism in addition to the themes present within his works. Piaget’s stages of cognitive development and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development sets the stage for understanding how age appropriate conversations can aid in children’s understanding of mental health issues. On March 31, 2023, sports gambling was made legal in Kentucky. This is in large part due to the Supreme Court overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in 2018. The legalization of sports gambling is bringing new, excess revenue into Kentucky, raising questions on what to do with the revenue? Through linear regression analysis, Kentucky is expected to earn approximately $23 million dollars in excess revenue. Currently, lawmakers are planning to use the revenue to partially fund state pension plans while saving a small portion (2.5%) to fight problem gambling. Most current research suggests that …

This thesis first argues that modern technological society (MTS) is moral-ethically harmful to its inhabitants. Through an analysis of works on the subject, two philosophical harms having to do with Being are presented. It is then shown how these harms are consequences of some of MTS’ most prominent technologies and their methods of implementation. Since these harms are moral-ethically dangerous, and the technologies that best perpetuate them are integral to the identity of MTS, the thesis finds MTS to be moral-ethically dangerous as well. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a three-carbon sugar that is the active ingredient in sunless tanning products and a by-product of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) combustion. Increased use of sunless tanning products and e-cigarettes has elevated exposures to DHA through inhalation and absorption. Studies have confirmed that DHA is rapidly absorbed into cells and can enter into metabolic pathways following phosphorylation to dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP), a product of fructose metabolism. Recent reports have suggested metabolic imbalance and cellular stress results from DHA exposures. However, the impact of elevated exposure to DHA on human health is currently under-investigated. Through the study of the phases of circadian rhythm and by applying associated environmental cues, can a building further promote health and well-being through design? This study argues that by applying design elements associated with each phase of the circadian rhythmic cycle to a built environment, overall human health and well-being are increased. This study assesses the relationships among exercise frequency, exercise intensity, and exercise type on four mental health variables of depression, anxiety, satisfaction with life, and flourishing. Participants include a sample of non-collegiate adults residing in or claiming citizenship of the United States. Participants provided survey data via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing platform. To assess exercise, two measures were employed to distinguish duration only and duration combined with intensity, while a third was used to assess exercise type. Bacteriophages are ubiquitous viruses containing extremely diverse genomes. Many phage genomes have been bioinformatically annotated; however, many genes lack wet-bench functional characterization. Elucidating individual phage gene function via the isolation of phage-host protein interactions allows for the exploration of novel antibacterial therapies within the context of phage-host biology. Mycobacteriophage Phayonce, infecting the host Mycobacterium smegmatis, encodes two cytotoxic gene, 41 and 64, which lack an annotated function. Using a bacterial two-hybrid screen along with the construction of fusion-protein expression vectors, multiple punitive phage-host protein interactions were isolated for both genes. Despite the recent exposure that police violence in America has received, of the related research that has been conducted, very little of it discusses the grief experience of victims’ families. The most significant insight given to that experience lies in the interviews of those family members that typically take place shortly after the tragedy.
