Topological Investigation Of Underground Mine Airflow Characteristics, Shadrack Nuamah May 2026

Topological Investigation Of Underground Mine Airflow Characteristics, Shadrack Nuamah

Honors Theses

Underground mine ventilation sustains safe working conditions by supplying fresh air, diluting contaminants, and controlling heat and humidity throughout active workings. Because air moves through a connected system of shafts, drifts, and raises, the ventilation problem is inherently one of network flow, and in large mines, that network can grow complex enough that standard simulation tools, while numerically reliable, leave engineers with little guidance on which circuits matter most, which redundancy is structurally meaningful, and where recirculation risk is concentrated. We address this gap by developing a physics-guided topological workflow that layers three complementary analyses: a physical graph filtration on …

Honors Theses

The Greenfields Bench is an irrigation-sustained, shallow, unconfined gravel aquifer in Teton County, Montana, where irrigation modernization and canal operations affect groundwater recharge, storage, and discharge to drains and streams. This study integrates a 30 m remote sensing soil water balance in Google Earth Engine using OpenET evapotranspiration and gridded climate inputs (2020 to 2024) with a two-epoch time-lapse microgravity survey (July and November 2025), groundwater-level measurements, Greenfields Irrigation District operational records, and U.S. Geological Survey streamflow observations to quantify irrigation water partitioning and develop a groundwater budget. Microgravity paired with water level change yields provisional, high-uncertainty, effective specific yield …

Hydrogen Engine For A Continuous Biochar Reactor, Andrew Woods May 2026

Hydrogen Engine For A Continuous Biochar Reactor, Andrew Woods

Honors Theses

A biochar reactor produces biochar, syngas, and bio-oil, which can be utilized for many useful products that are used in environmental remediation and power generation. The hydrogen that is captured from the syngas during the thermochemical gasification process opens the door to a unique opportunity to provide green energy from a biomass feedstock. The research aims to incorporate a single-cylinder, 10-hp engine that has been converted from gasoline to hydrogen fuel into a continuous biochar production reactor. This will play the role of power generation in a larger system that intends to mobilize biochar production. This study focuses on the …

Hydrogeochemistry Of Natural Acid Rock Drainage In The Tobacco Root Mountains Of Southwest Montana And Implications For Restoration, Josie Grigsby May 2026

Hydrogeochemistry Of Natural Acid Rock Drainage In The Tobacco Root Mountains Of Southwest Montana And Implications For Restoration, Josie Grigsby

Honors Theses

This study investigates the hydrogeochemistry of the East Fork of the South Boulder River (EFSBR) in the northern Tobacco Root Mountains, Madison County, Montana. The upper 5 km of the main stem of the EFSBR is acidic (pH < 5.5), and dissolved concentrations of several trace metals including Al, Cd, Cu, and Zn exceed chronic aquatic life standards by 2-3 orders of magnitude. Unsurprisingly, the EFSBR appears to be devoid of trout. Since no mining has taken place at the source areas of the acidic headwater streams, this phenomenon is referred to as Natural Acid Rock Drainage (NARD). High mountains (up to 10,500’) bounding the EFSBR valley harbor a number of potential small rock glaciers and other periglacial features that appear to influence the hydrogeology and chemistry of the watershed. The steady flow of cold water in the hot summer months, during the same time period that neighboring drainages are drying up, is hypothesized to be sourced from melting ground ice high in the headwater catchment. Additionally, rock glaciers can act as efficient chemical reactors where they exist in conjunction with acid-generating mineralized bedrock, affecting the severity of acidic drainage and associated metal concentrations. Neutralization of the acidic water by alkaline tributaries results in the precipitation of aluminum hydroxysulfate (basaluminite), which covers the streambed with a vivid white mineral coating and can act as a natural sink through adsorption of other toxic metals to its surface. Pristine catchments exhibiting NARD can provide water quality data and serve as reference sites for restoration projects at sites experiencing Acid Mine Drainage where historical data does not exist. As climate change continues to alter the natural environment, especially in polar and high elevation regions, severity and instances of NARD are predicted to continue to increase on a global scale. A deeper understanding of the processes driving NARD from studies focused on areas such as the EFSBR will provide guidance for protecting vulnerable aquatic ecosystems and managing water resources in mountain communities into the future, as well as insights into necessary changes to established remediation methods in watersheds experiencing acid mine drainage.

Modification And Characterization Of Bacterial Cellulose Membranes For The Potential Removal Of Various Contaminants From Water, Madison Skeel May 2026

Modification And Characterization Of Bacterial Cellulose Membranes For The Potential Removal Of Various Contaminants From Water, Madison Skeel

Honors Theses

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a promising bio-based material for membrane filtration due to its high purity, interconnected nanofibrillar structure, and tunable physical properties. However, unmodified BC membranes function primarily as passive filtration materials, with performance largely governed by pore size and lacking the ability to effectively interact with dissolved contaminants. This study investigates the modification of BC membranes through a combination of mechanical pressing, chitosan functionalization, and citric acid crosslinking to enhance both structural control and functional performance. BC membranes were synthesized using a kombucha-based system and subsequently purified, mechanically compressed, and chemically modified. Results demonstrated that the …

The Isoperimetric Inequality And Wirtinger’S Inequality, Mason Neal May 2026

The Isoperimetric Inequality And Wirtinger’S Inequality, Mason Neal

Honors Theses

In this thesis, we present Hurwitz’s proof of the Isoperimetric Inequality, which roughly states that the area enclosed by a simple closed curve is always less than or equal to the area of a circle with the same perimeter. Hurwitz’s proof relies on Wirtinger’s Inequality. We survey results about periodic functions and Fourier series, and we use them to provide a proof of Wirtinger’s Inequality. We then give a new proof of a variant of Wirtinger’s Inequality due to Alzer and generalize this variant to higher powers.

Penitential Systems In The Latin West And Byzantine East, Elijah C. Dodson May 2026

Penitential Systems In The Latin West And Byzantine East, Elijah C. Dodson

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the development and organization of penitential discipline in early medieval Christianity through a comparison of the penitential tradition associated with Theodore of Canterbury in the Latin West and the canons attributed to John the Faster in the Byzantine East. The study focuses on how these texts regulated sexual sin and what their structures reveal about the institutional role of the Church in different historical contexts. The analysis is based on a comparative reading of penitential texts, supported by patristic writings and modern scholarship. By examining how specific categories of sexual misconduct are classified and disciplined, this study …

Brachial Macroparasite Loads In Estuarine Young-Of-Year Striped Mullet (Mugil Cephalus), Triston Rice

Honors Theses

Climate change is a growing threat to marine habitats globally. One ecological impact that warming water temperatures poses is the increased metabolic rate of many parasite species. Their promoted reproductive and feeding rates could pose a threat to the stability of many host populations. Parasites of the gills, or brachial parasites, are especially concerning to fish populations globally. As parasitism is not limited to a specific taxon and comprises a large diversity of ecomorphs and behaviors, geographically distinct areas may be differentially affected by the changing prevalence of parasites. This study aimed to survey current brachial parasite abundance and prevalence …

Benefits Of A Teacher Created Mathematics Resource Website For Teachers And Students, Callista Hull May 2026

Benefits Of A Teacher Created Mathematics Resource Website For Teachers And Students, Callista Hull

Honors Theses

For my Honors College capstone project, I created a math resource website for teachers and students. I chose to develop this website because often resources available for teachers to use for student support are not always linked to state standards, so developing a website with resources linked directly to state standards made sense to me. Resources are plentiful for teachers and students but they are not always exactly what teachers need because they are not directly linked to a state standard. This led me to my idea to create a resource that would be easily accessible, beneficial, and helpful to …

Functionalized Nanodiamonds As Binding Platforms For Single-Stranded Dna, Mallory A. Chapman May 2026

Functionalized Nanodiamonds As Binding Platforms For Single-Stranded Dna, Mallory A. Chapman

Honors Theses

Nanodiamonds (NDs) offer a promising platform for biomolecular applications due to their stability, biocompatibility, and three-dimensional structure. This study focused on developing a nanodiamond–DNA complex in which streptavidin-functionalized NDs would form a protective shell around biotinylated single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), creating a core–shell system like an “M&M” candy with DNA at the center and a protective coating on the outside. DNA has many uses in nanotechnology, including DNA origami, nanomachines, and drug delivery systems, but its degradation limits its practical use, making protective strategies essential.

ND–DNA conjugates were prepared using biotin–streptavidin interactions and analyzed using gel electrophoresis. Initial separation on agarose …

A Solution For Safe Pivot Transfers In A Population With Limited Mobility, Elizabeth A. Mitchell, Sean R. Giamportone

Honors Theses

Sit-to-stand pivot transfers are one of the most frequently performed movements for

individuals with limited mobility. This movement is very often performed in long-term care

facilities and clinics. Despite the commonality, this transfer poses a significant risk of injury to

both the patient and caregiver; falls, musculoskeletal injuries, and the reduction of independence

can result from issues associated with these transfers. Existing assistive devices, Hoyer lifts and

sliding boards, present limitations with cost, size, storage, and usability; thus, caregivers rely on

the hands-on manual transfer that increases the risk of injury. The goal of our team was to

address these …
