Observations Of Silicified Stromatolites From The Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician Of Adairsville, Georgia, Lyra C. Pala

This study describes and analyzes silicified stromatolite samples collected near Adairsville, Georgia, from Cambrian–Ordovician system rocks likely belonging to the Copper Ridge Dolomite of the Knox Group. Using the classification system outlined by Grey and Awramik (2020), the stromatolites were systematically described at the macro-, meso-, and microscales. The samples display two primary mesostructural morphologies—branched-bifurcate and layered-linked columnar forms—with non-couplet lamination, smooth to wavy laminae, moderate to high synoptic relief, and alternating microlaminae textures. Unlike previous studies of stromatolites from nearby Murray County, Georgia the stromatolites samples from Adairsville, Georgia preserve well-defined mesoscale and microscale lamination visible in thin section …

These frameworks were numerous and diverse, characterized by varying interpretations of nature. The presence of bacterial contamination on wheelchair surfaces in long-term care facilities poses a significant risk to infection control and patient safety. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and diversity of bacterial species, including Staphylococcus aureus (SA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE), Pseudomonas spp., and enteric bacteria on five key components of wheelchairs at a local long-term care facility. A total of 320 swabs were collected from wheelchair components, including handles for pushing, armrests, seats, wheel handles, and tires. This study examined the relationship between the quality of community based learning (CBL) experiences and students’ openness to diversity, and the potential moderating effects of student identity. Prior research indicates that CBL can have positive diversity-related outcomes, but other studies show CBL can perpetuate biases and white supremacy. I surveyed 152 University of Richmond undergraduate students who completed a CBL course in Fall 2024. Measures included a modified version of the Service Learning Quality Assessment Tool (SLQAT), the Openness to Diversity and Challenge scale, and demographic information. Less central to the belonging conversation is faculty belonging; since faculty play an instrumental role in the development of student belonging, we hypothesize that faculty belonging may increase positive student outcomes inside and outside the classroom. This study examined the relationship between prior experiences, vicarious resilience, and psychological well-being of students enrolled in a community-based learning (CBL) course. Given that CBL has positive psychological benefits for students, I investigated the circumstances under which positive outcomes were more likely, specifically: To what extent does prior CBL-relevant experience improve students’ mental health outcomes as a result of a current CBL experience? This thesis argues that contemporary public shaming—amplified today by the Internet and universal social membership—is unjustifiable because existing theories ignore its distinctly democratic harms. Defining public shaming as an intentional, collective act that weaponizes social opprobrium, I critique existing consequentialist and deontological defenses, showing they overlook how shaming erodes the conditions for democratic citizenship. ESKAPE pathogens comprise six bacteria that can be highly virulent and are likely to develop antibiotic resistance to many of the currently available antibiotics. New antibiotics are needed to combat these pathogens. Our approach was to isolate and identify antimicrobial compounds from bacteria isolated from soil. Two isolates demonstrating antimicrobial activity were identified as Chromobacterium sp. and Alcaligenes parafaecalis. Preliminary extraction of their antimicrobials was performed.

This research investigates how individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) process category information and adapt to changing visual environments during search tasks. Drawing on Enhanced Perceptual Functioning and Weak Central Coherence theories, the study examines whether individuals with ASD rely more on detailed, exemplar-based templates compared to neurotypical individuals. Two experiments manipulated category-color associations within real-world scene contexts using match and mismatch conditions to assess visual search efficiency and cognitive flexibility. A memristive device has an internal resistance that depends on the history of the applied voltage signal. This dependence gives rise to a pinched hysteresis loop in its current-voltage (I-V) characteristic, a property of resistive switching.

Our computational model simulates the current-voltage response of a memristive device under a sinusoidal voltage. Conflict is inevitable in romantic relationships, and men vary widely in the strategies they use to resolve such conflict. The present study tested the roles of sexual orientation, political orientation, and masculine norm conformity in predicting men’s endorsement of adverse conflict responses in romantic relationships. In this pre-registered experiment, 403 cisgender men (200 straight, 203 queer-identifying; 44% racial/ethnic minority) first indicated their conformity to stereotypical masculinity norms then were presented with four randomly-ordered vignettes of a couple in an argument—each depicting a target man engaging in one of four conflict responses (physical violence, psychological aggression, withdrawal, compromise).
