The Role Of Action In Affordance Perception Using Virtual Reality, Ashley J. Funkhouser
The Role Of Action In Affordance Perception Using Virtual Reality, Ashley J. Funkhouser
Honors Theses
Space perception in virtual reality (VR) is distorted. Does action in conjunction with an avatar's presence improve perception in VR? Participants judged whether a virtual ball was within reach. Condition 1 was perception-only, where the participant was not allowed to move nor could see their arms. Condition 2 was perception with nonvisible action, where the participant could move their real arm to reach but could not see an avatar representation of the arm. Condition 3 was perception with visible action, where the participant could move and see a virtual hand that corresponded to the actual arm movement. Participants overestimated their …

Co-Assembly Behavior Of Neutral And Zwitterionic Amphiphilic Block Copolymers In The Fabrication Of Glassy Polymer Vesicles, Elina Ghimire
Honors Theses
Polymersomes, also known as polymer vesicles, are hollow capsules fabricated through the solution assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers. Polymer vesicles have garnered a great deal of interest in materials science because of their potential application in areas such as drug delivery, diagnostics and imaging, gene therapy, and as nanoreactors. The goal of this project is to understand the factors that affect the arrangement of triblocks in vesicle membrane via the study of the co-assembly behavior of linear amphiphilic triblocks with different hydrophilic blocks. We investigated the self- and co-assembly behavior of amphiphilic triblock copolymers with neutral hydrophilic blocks. Moreover, we …
Coordinated Autonomy Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Uavs), Paribartan Dhakal
Coordinated Autonomy Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Uavs), Paribartan Dhakal
Honors Theses
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being extensively used in diverse sectors of the society for various tasks ranging from videography to an extremely sensitive situation such as first responders helping during a disaster. It has been seen that if a fleet of UAVs is deployed, they can perform a task quicker and more efficiently than a single UAV. With an increase in the number of UAVs, a problem arises of handling them with proper control structures. It has been studied that the Behavior Trees (BT) can be a better control architecture to handle the autonomous vehicles, as BTs are more …
The Effect Of Truncated Complement Constructs On Biofilm Formation, Protease Production, And Pigmentation, Cara L. Cothern
The Effect Of Truncated Complement Constructs On Biofilm Formation, Protease Production, And Pigmentation, Cara L. Cothern
Honors Theses
The msaABCR operon regulates virulence factors in Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive commensal organism that colonizes healthy individuals but can also be a human pathogen. These virulence factors include biofilm development, pigmentation, and extracellular protease production. The operon consists of the msaB gene, which produces a coding transcript, the msaA gene and the msaC gene, which produce noncoding RNAs, and msaR, which produces an antisense RNA. The latter three transcript regions of the operon are referred to as untranslated regions (UTRs) and are essential for the function of the operon, but only msaB encodes a protein. The mechanism of …
Impact Of Salt Deduction Cap On Individual Tax Liability, Mahum Chaudhry
Impact Of Salt Deduction Cap On Individual Tax Liability, Mahum Chaudhry
Honors Theses
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 placed a cap of $10,000 on the State and Local Tax deduction. A survey was carried out to compare individuals' tax liability in 2017 (before the cap) with their tax liability in 2018 (after the cap). The results suggest that fewer people itemized in 2018, and most belonged to the high-income group. Many individuals who itemized in 2018 also saw an increase in their federal tax liability. Most individuals with less than $100,000 yearly income opted for the standard deduction and saw a decrease in their federal tax liability in 2018 (in …
Evaluating Biogenesis Of 5’-Tailed Mirtrons, Jonathan D. Hoover
Evaluating Biogenesis Of 5’-Tailed Mirtrons, Jonathan D. Hoover
Honors Theses
MicroRNAs are 22 nucleotide, non-coding RNAs that serve as substrates for Argonaute proteins to induce RNA interference pathways. Intron-derived miRNA precursors called “mirtrons” have been identified and classified primarily through deep sequencing methods. Unlike most miRNAs, mirtrons are derived from splicing events and also exhibit high levels of post-transcriptional nucleotide addition to hairpin precursors. Most relevant among these modifications is 3’ uridylation as it inhibits mirtron biogenesis in multiple model systems. Mirtrons may also possess additional nucleotides adjacent to the pre-miRNA hairpin at the 3’ and/or 5’ ends. These nucleotide “tails” are removed prior to Dicer cleaving the hairpin. In …

Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells Are Sensitive To The Cytotoxicity Of Nitric Oxide: Biological Implications For Early Embryogenesis, Mckenzie C. Hargis
Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells Are Sensitive To The Cytotoxicity Of Nitric Oxide: Biological Implications For Early Embryogenesis, Mckenzie C. Hargis
Honors Theses
The early embryo, before implantation, is at a very vulnerable stage in development where it faces various inflammatory cytokines throughout the implantation process. In this stage, the cells in the blastocyst, the preimplantation stage embryo, must proliferate rapidly for tissue formation. However, it is known that inflammatory cytokines can inhibit cell proliferation. Previous studies have shown that embryonic stem cells (mESCs), the major cell component in the blastocyst, are unresponsive to treatments of tumor necrosis factor ⍺ (TNF⍺) and interferon 𝛾 (IFN𝛾), two inflammatory cytokines involved in the implantation process. Treatment of mESC-differentiated fibroblasts (mESC-FBs) with TNF⍺ and IFN𝛾 in …
Alpha-Gal Syndrome: Molecular Characterization Of Amblyomma Americanum Α-D-Galactosidase In Α-Gal Metabolism And Onset Of Red Meat Allergy, Ahmed A. Mohamed
Alpha-Gal Syndrome: Molecular Characterization Of Amblyomma Americanum Α-D-Galactosidase In Α-Gal Metabolism And Onset Of Red Meat Allergy, Ahmed A. Mohamed
Honors Theses
Tick-borne red meat allergy is an IgE-mediated delayed hypersensitivity reaction, increasingly widespread in tick endemic areas in the United States of America, and worldwide. Bites from the lone-star tick (Amblyomma americanum) are believed to be involved as the source of the sensitization of humans to the oligosaccharide galactose-⍺-1,3-galactose (α-gal), which is found in most mammal-derived food products, including gelatin, broths, and red meat. The purpose of this study is to functionally characterize the lone-star tick α-D-galactosidase (AGS) enzyme and assess its role in α-gal metabolism. This enzyme cleaves terminal α-galactose moieties from glycoproteins and glycolipids. Hence, I hypothesized …

“Part Of That (Man’S) World”: Analyzing “Cinderella” And “The Little Mermaid” Fairy Tale Variants Through A Feminist Lens, K. Morgan Mitchell
Honors Theses
Fairy tales are often reduced to nothing more than the moral lesson that can be taught to children. However, when we move past the impulse to search for the simplified moral of the story, we can begin to ascertain the impact of fairy tales on different audiences. This thesis uses both impact theory, which yields a close reading of the textual and cinematic evidence, and reception research, which provides an opportunity to discuss the significance of the material by speculating about the message that readers receive. Under consideration are four variants each of the “Cinderella” and “The Little Mermaid” fairy …
The Long Time Behavior Of The Predator-Prey Model With Holling Type Iii, Regen S. Mcgee
The Long Time Behavior Of The Predator-Prey Model With Holling Type Iii, Regen S. Mcgee
Honors Theses
In this paper, the classical Lotka-Volterra model is expanded based on functional response of Holling type III to analyze a dynamical predator-prey relationship with hunting cooperation (a) and the Allee effect among predators. The stability of equilibrium solutions was first analyzed by deriving a Jacobian matrix from partial derivatives of our model. Newly derived eigenvalues are then used to determine the stability. The viability of the model is then demonstrated by using MATLAB. The numerical results show a clear Allee effect and a variety of possible phenomena related to stability when carrying capacity (k) is varied. Two different types of …

An External Expression Of The Inner Spirit: Dance, Religion, And Taboos In Christianity, Erin E. Ingram
An External Expression Of The Inner Spirit: Dance, Religion, And Taboos In Christianity, Erin E. Ingram
Honors Theses
Dance, religion, and the presence of taboos have each been recognized as what is known throughout the social sciences as “cultural universals.” For example, though not every individual dances, dance can be found in all societies (Brown, 2004). Furthermore, many cultures use dance as part of religious or ritual worship. The following thesis explores possible answers to these three intertwined questions: “Many cultures across the world have developed dances for the purpose of religious or spiritual rituals and celebrations. Does dance as a form of expression stem from a biological, spiritual, or cultural need? Why do cultures turn to dance …
Test-Driving Interventions For Teachers To Improve Treatment Integrity, Viktoria Papp
Test-Driving Interventions For Teachers To Improve Treatment Integrity, Viktoria Papp
Honors Theses
Teachers often have to implement interventions in the classroom to address challenging student behaviors. Such issues are often addressed during behavioral consultation which involves working with a specialized consultant, such as a school psychologist, to determine the most robust strategy that will predictably have the greatest impact in addressing the problematic behavior. Equally important in this intervention process is the application of any intervention technique or strategy in the manner in which it has been designed and investigated to work based on supporting research.
There is an increasing need for consultants to consider utilizing strategies that promote the adherence to …

Assessing The Role Personality Plays In Puppy Raisers And Guide Dogs In Training, Cassidy D. Wood
Honors Theses
Several factors affect how guide dogs in training fare during the period before the dogs are paired with their future handler. One factor that has not been researched in the past is personality compatibility between the puppy raiser and the dog in training. For the needs of the visually impaired community to be met, guide dog schools need to efficiently train and match dogs to handlers without the dogs failing. To help reduce the number of dogs that fail guide dog training, this study suggests the assessment and comparison of personality for the dog and potential puppy raisers to better …
The Cultural Influence On Sharing Economy Services: The Case Of Airbnb, Lacey K. Wallace
The Cultural Influence On Sharing Economy Services: The Case Of Airbnb, Lacey K. Wallace
Honors Theses
The sharing economy offers consumers an alternative to ownership by exchanging value through technology-based services. As sharing economy practices continue to emerge, business scholars have only recently begun to study how cultural differences impact the sharing economy. Specifically, few studies have examined individual cultural values. Therefore, this study explores whether differences in cultural values, using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, account for consumers’ attitudes and participation in sharing economy services (SES). Utilizing a survey, data was gathered from a total of 276 consumers from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) who had previous experience with Airbnb, a popular peer-to-peer accommodation SES. Multiple regression was …

Tailoring Photodegradation Rates Of Acetal-Containing Polymer Networks, Michael Sandoz
Tailoring Photodegradation Rates Of Acetal-Containing Polymer Networks, Michael Sandoz
Honors Theses
In this thesis, we explore the degradation of poly (thioether acetal) thermosets via a photoinduced thiol-catalyzed ß-scission of acetal linkages incorporated as network crosslink junctions. Specifically, a library of bis-allyl acetal-containing monomers derived from para-substituted benzaldehydes was synthesized and formulated into photopolymerizable thiol-ene resins with commercially available thiol monomers. By varying the electron donating or withdrawing nature of the monomer substituent, we explored the impact of substituent effects on the rate of polymer degradation. Furthermore, we compare the results to those expected from a classical Hammett-type relationship of substituent electronic effects. FTIR was employed to track the appearance of the …
The Effects Of Disease Contamination On Memory For Touched Objects In Older Adults, Jessica M. Runnels
The Effects Of Disease Contamination On Memory For Touched Objects In Older Adults, Jessica M. Runnels
Honors Theses
Recently it has been shown that individuals have better memory for objects that have been touched by an individual with a contagious disease relative to an individual with a non-contagious disease or who is healthy (Gretz & Huff, 2019). This pattern has been suggested to occur due to the activation of the Behavioral Immune System (BIS)—an avoidance-based system designed to thwart sources of potential pathogens. The BIS has been suggested to operate through an evolutionary-based mechanism in which avoidance of pathogens increases the likelihood of survival, increasing reproductive success. Given this approach, an important question is how the activation of …

A Machine Learning Method For Predicting Liver Transplant Survival Outcomes, Brandon C. Revels
A Machine Learning Method For Predicting Liver Transplant Survival Outcomes, Brandon C. Revels
Honors Theses
For years, doctors have utilized the Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) score to aid in the allocation of organs for liver transplants (LT). A major issue with using the MELD score to allocate organs for transplantation is that the MELD score does not accurately predict post-transplant survival. This research project aims to investigate the use of machine learning (ML) methods to predict LT survival using the newer Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) dataset. For this project, death and nonfatal graft failure were treated equally as both cases result in a loss of a donated organ. The ML algorithms …
Patterns Of Genomic Introgression In Topminnow Hybrid Zones, Amanda F. Ray
Patterns Of Genomic Introgression In Topminnow Hybrid Zones, Amanda F. Ray
Honors Theses
Hybridization and introgression are two important evolutionary mechanisms that can increase genetic diversity. Interesting introgression patterns can form when parental species have genes that confer some adaptive benefit to the organism. The Fundulus notatus species complex contains species with various identifying characterisics. Fundulus notatus, the blackstripe topminnow, and Fundulus olivaceus, the blackspotted topminnow, are closely related and occupy many of the same rivers in their preferred niches. These two species often hybridize and form hybrid zones where their niches overlap. We studied two hybrid zones located in the Tombigbee River and Spring River. Within each hybrid zone, we …

Investigating Roles For Rna Turnover Processes In Cell Signaling Through Drosophila Melanogaster Genetic Mosaics, Sudiksha Rathan Kumar
Honors Theses
The process of cell signaling is vital in organisms for proper development as it determines the fate and function of cells. This process is highly regulated by myriad interactions between signaling pathway components and gene expression mechanisms. RNA turnover is a type of RNA processing that degrades RNA. It plays an essential role in homeostasis and environmental changes; however, its influence on signaling pathways is currently unknown. In the present study, the effect of RNA turnover processes on cell signaling was analyzed using the genetic mosaics in Drosophila melanogaster. Fly mosaics were created by breeding RNAi lines targeting cellular …
Selfsame Epoxide-Amine Microparticle Systems: Investigation Of Crosslink Density, John J. Peyrefitte
Selfsame Epoxide-Amine Microparticle Systems: Investigation Of Crosslink Density, John J. Peyrefitte
Honors Theses
Epoxide-amine matrix materials containing microparticles with the same chemical composition provide a model system to study interphase formation in highly crosslinked epoxide-amine matrix materials. The epoxide monomer was varied between three different monomer systems to study the model system’s relationship with crosslink density. The same amine monomer, cure procedure, and stoichiometric ratio of epoxide and amine groups were used to prepare each type of microparticle and matrix material. The differences in the epoxide monomer structure affected the crosslink density of the unmodified matrix material, which was concluded to influence the effect of microparticle presence on crosslink density. For the unmodified …
Regulation Of Weak Acid-Dependent Cell Death By The Msaabcr Operon During Biofilm Formation Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Sarah-Elizabeth M. Polley
Regulation Of Weak Acid-Dependent Cell Death By The Msaabcr Operon During Biofilm Formation Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Sarah-Elizabeth M. Polley
Honors Theses
Staphylococcus aureus is a dangerous human pathogen and a leading cause of both nosocomial and community-associated infections. Infection by S. aureus is a growing health concern due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance and the capability to form robust biofilms. Major constituents of the biofilm extracellular matrix are demonstrated to be released via controlled autolysis of a subpopulation of the biofilm. As indicated in past studies, the programmed cell death (PCD) of S. aureus grown in a biofilm microenvironment is potentiated by the buildup of acetate, a byproduct of glucose metabolism, which causes cytoplasmic acidification. Furthermore, it has been shown …
Twisted Central Configurations Of The Eight-Body Problem, Gokul Bhusal
Twisted Central Configurations Of The Eight-Body Problem, Gokul Bhusal
Honors Theses
The N-body problem qualifies as the problem of the twenty-first century because of its fundamental importance and difficulty to solve [1]. A number of great mathematicians and physicists have tried but failed to come up with the general solution of the problem. Due to the complexity of the problem, even a partial result will help us in the understanding of the N-body problem. Central configurations play a ‘central’ role in the understanding of the N-body problem. The well known Euler and Lagrangian solutions are both generated from three-body central configurations. The existence and classifications of central configurations have attracted number …
Assessing The Effect Of Bile And Oxygen Availability On The Redox Status Of Listeria Monocytogenes Strain F2365, Sukriti Bhattarai
Assessing The Effect Of Bile And Oxygen Availability On The Redox Status Of Listeria Monocytogenes Strain F2365, Sukriti Bhattarai
Honors Theses
Although bile is a bactericidal agent able to disrupt membrane structure and cellular homeostasis, including the induction of oxidative stress, Listeria can tolerate bile and also utilize it as a signal to enhance infection and virulence. Preliminary findings showed that under anaerobic conditions, exposure to bile significantly lowered the amount of oxidative damage present in bile-resistant strain F2365 cells. Similarly, Listeria further elicits an adaptive immune response, wherein pre-exposure of the bacterium to stress during food processing or in the host prior to entry into the intestine increases bile tolerance. Based on these previous studies, we hypothesized that bile induces …
