Special Olympics : A Study Of Potential Opportunities To Foster Leadership And Personal Development Within Participants, Adam Ward

Honors Theses

The idea for my senior project was born out of a struggle. I had tinkered with several thoughts regarding potential projects, hut I was not eager to dedicate myself to something toward which I felt little passion. When Dr. Hickman mentioned the possibility of examining the opportunities for leadership among Special Olympics athletes, I was intrigued. In high school I donated time with The Miriam School, which catered to special-needs students. For my service learning project in the spring of my junior year I had the opportunity to work in the Special Education classroom of Three Chopt Elementary School - …

Academic Versus Popular Press Perspectives In Sport Leadership : A Comparative Analysis, Frank Spina

Honors Theses

Athletic competition has been an increasingly integral part of society for the better part of three millennia. Beginning with the dawn of the ancient Olympics, sports have remained a highly valued component of all cultures in forms as different as the Medieval Tournament and the World Series. The role such competition plays has also taken on varying forms including sanctioned violence, alternative entertainment, spectatorism, and exercise, and has ultimately evolved into the current status of sports as a multi-billion dollar industry. Surely this popularity of professional competition is indicative of the powerful impact of sports on modem life: "few phenomena …

Der Fuehrer, Der Lehrer, Sally K. Sorensen Aug 1995

Der Fuehrer, Der Lehrer, Sally K. Sorensen

Honors Theses

Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist party made many changes to Germany's educational system. They changed overall aspects of education such as its goals and its purpose. They also changed the classroom by rearranging the curriculum and the educational environment. The Nazis originated an enormous movement towards deintellectualization. They taught boys and girls somewhat different lessons and attempted to persuade students to completely give themselves to the Reich; mind, body, and soul. All of the changes in the educational system were constructed to promote the Nazi party and help it prosper.

Evaluation Of The Emotional Responsiveness Of Splanchnicectomized Laboratory Rats Using The Elevated Plus-Maze, Heather A. Finkle May 1995

Evaluation Of The Emotional Responsiveness Of Splanchnicectomized Laboratory Rats Using The Elevated Plus-Maze, Heather A. Finkle

Honors Theses

The goal of this study was to ascertain whether emotional responsiveness is attenuated when a subject undergoes bilateral splanchnicectomy. To accomplish this, the splanchnic nerve was severed bilaterally, below the branches to the adrenal glands. The majority of visceral information reaches spinal and medullary centers via the splanchnic, vagus, and pelvic nerves. Therefore, when severing the splanchnic nerve one eliminates one of the major afferent pathways transmitting visceral information to the central nervous system. Thus, we were testing the hypothesis that decreased feedback from portions of the gastrointestinal system would decrease emotional reactivity in a mildly arousing situation. No significant …

Sturdy Rogues And Wanton Wenches : Response To Vagrancy And Development Of The Tudor Poor Laws, 1530-1597, Sonia T. Banerji

Honors Theses

Tudor England experienced crisis levels of poverty and unemployment which manifested in the form of widespread vagrancy during the sixteenth century. From 1530 to 1597 the central government, often with inspiration from local initiatives, enacted a series of laws which attempted to address the causes of the problems as perceived by the public, in an effort to quell popular fears and anxieties regarding vagrancy.

The focus of this paper is on the response of Tudor society to the problems of poverty and vagrancy. It studies the statutory distinctions drawn between various states of poverty and how these differences disposed society …

The Entrepreneurial Leadership Puzzle : The Pieces You Need To Start A Business, Charles S. Ribaudo Jan 1995

The Entrepreneurial Leadership Puzzle : The Pieces You Need To Start A Business, Charles S. Ribaudo

Honors Theses

While having effective followers is critical, the leadership attributes of the entrepreneur is just as important. Gardner and several other leadership scholars have done significant research on the attributes of leaders. The entrepreneur is just one of many leaders that possess the necessary leadership attributes for success. Starting a company requires such a tremendous time commitment that the leaders within it must be able to handle the stress and ambiguity that goes along with it. This takes leadership to handle this ambiguity of whether they wilt meet the next paycheck. Employees, investors and customers will be looking to them to …

The Grotian Quest Revisited, Jeffrey Waggett Jan 1995

The Grotian Quest Revisited, Jeffrey Waggett

Honors Theses

In 1625, more than twenty years prior to the ending of the Thirty Years War with the Treaty of Westphalia, Hugo Grotius wrote De Jure Belli-ac Pacis, outlining his solutions for a troubled world. While the details and particularities of his ideas may not be compatible with today's unsettled and transitory world, what he strove and quested for is as applicable today as it was at the beginning of the modem state system. At the time of Grotius, feudalism was being replaced by statist concerns, centering around territory and a dual centralization of domestic authority and military power. The transitory …

Women's Leadership In The Sports Field, Tara L. Messmore

Honors Theses

According to the interviews with successful women in nationally and internationally renowned companies/organizations in the sports world, there were ten concepts discussed most frequently in reference to how women succeed in this particular male-dominated field. Six of these ten concepts correlated to hindrances that impede women from breaking the glass ceiling in other nontraditional careers, while the remaining four concepts were unique to the sports field. In fact, a study conducted in The New Leaders and supported by a combination of other studies commisssioned by the Executive Leadership Council on driving and restraining forces for black senior executives (Baskerville and …

Honors Theses

"Let us not be deceived--we are today in the midst of a cold war. Our enemies are to be found abroad and at home. Let us never forget this: Our unrest is the heart of their success. Baruch before the South Carolina state legislature on April 16, 1947. The speech is significant because in using the term 'cold war,' Baruch …

The Dilemma Of Unacknowledged Sexual Harassment On Siu's Campus, Tchicaya Ellis May 1994

The Dilemma Of Unacknowledged Sexual Harassment On Siu's Campus, Tchicaya Ellis

Honors Theses

There is problem within the arena of sexual harassment that deals with the low rate of reporting such harassment. Low reports could mean that victims don't even acknowledge that they have been sexually harassed. This study deals directly with this phenomenon. Other studies show that only 50% of women in any given sample report being victims of sexually harassing experiences but only 5% of those women actually report being sexually harassed (Fitzgerald, 1988). It was hypothesized that the status of the perpetrator would positively predict victim's likelihood of claiming to be sexually harassed but this was found to be unsupported. …

Dualistic, Multiplistic, And Relativistic Thinking As It Relates To A Psychology Major, David D. Johnson May 1994

Dualistic, Multiplistic, And Relativistic Thinking As It Relates To A Psychology Major, David D. Johnson

Honors Theses

The present study examined differences in reflective judgment between graduate students in Behavior Modification and Clinical/Counseling Psychology. Differences in reflective judgment were examined with respect to three factors: dualism, multiplism, and relativism. Each subject was given the Epistemological Cognition's Scale. This 48 point questionnaire was administered to 28 subjects, 14 from each department. This scale uses questions developed from Perry's scheme and Kitchner and King's 1981 model to determine the different levels of reflective judgment for each program. The results indicate that there was a difference between programs on the factor of dualism, but no differences on multiplism, or relativism. …

Leadership : Can It Be Taught?, Edward R. Schreiber Iii Apr 1994

Leadership : Can It Be Taught?, Edward R. Schreiber Iii

Honors Theses

This paper attempts to support the assertion that leadership can be taught. To accomplish this task I must first determine what leadership is. To assert that something can be taught I must first ascertain what the subject is. This is an issue of particular sensitivity and complexity, and will be discussed in length in this paper. From there I will attack the question of whether this thing called leadership can be taught. How can an educational curriculum actually teach people leadership? This question is actually the culmination of a number of underlying issues which must first be confronted.

International Educational Reform, Cristine Lipscomb Jan 1994

International Educational Reform, Cristine Lipscomb

Honors Theses

John Gardner sent out a plea for humanity. He claimed that there is a crisis in leadership; a lack of competent leaders to meet today's challenges. (On Leadership, 1990) One of today's foremost challenges is educational reform. Education demands the attention of leaders. By addressing the crisis in education, the crisis in leadership can be simultaneously improved.

The Jepson School curriculum is. designed to teach students for and about leadership. As a student, I have enhanced my potential to alleviate the crisis in leadership and contribute to my community in leadership/ followership contexts. However, integral sources from all systems of …

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard Jan 1994

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard

Honors Theses

It is important to create an accepting environment for children to begin to appreciate faith in God. Adults need to recognize that even though children may not be able to talk about God, they do have an ability to think about and appreciate God (Lester 174). Because children have an active imagination and are just beginning to develop some logic skills, this is an easy segue for a child to understand many of the stories and parables that adults may discount. When children ask questions, it is important to get them to think through the issue and to provide some …
