Advocating For The Role Of An Occupational Therapy Assistant In The Mental Health Field, Aleah Snell
Advocating For The Role Of An Occupational Therapy Assistant In The Mental Health Field, Aleah Snell
Honors Theses
As a student in the WMU OTA Bachelor's of Science program, I completed a baccalaureate project. I chose to advocate for the role of occupational therapy in traditional mental health settings. I chose this topic as I have had several close loved ones struggle with mental health, and I wanted to push my learning of occupational therapy's role in this setting further. Upon choosing my topic, I learned although occupational therapy initially started in mental health aiding veterans returning from war, only 2-3% of OT practitioners work in a mental health setting today. I wanted to understand this decline, and …
A Modern Moral Dilemma: A Utilization Of Culture Wars For Political Gain Within The United States Government, Abigail K. Lowry
A Modern Moral Dilemma: A Utilization Of Culture Wars For Political Gain Within The United States Government, Abigail K. Lowry
Honors Theses
The present study researches the background of culture wars within the United States and showcases how these culture wars are being utilized by political entrepreneurs in order to achieve a goal separate from resolving the expressed policy issue. In an effort to investigate this phenomenon, this paper analyzes the historical timeline of several prominent culture wars within the United States and then uses this background as a lens to examine the political successes and failures of two United States governors who attempted to utilize culture wars in order to advance themselves politically. By examining the rhetoric used by Ron DeSantis …
Predictors In Help-Seeking Intentions For Friends With Eating Disorders, Allie M. Robb
Predictors In Help-Seeking Intentions For Friends With Eating Disorders, Allie M. Robb
Honors Theses
Emotional intelligence is a significant factor in one’s well-being as high emotional intelligence predicts sound mental well-being and a better quality of life as one can accurately understand emotions (Kulkarni & Velhal, 2023). However, low emotional intelligence has also been found to be a predictor not only of the development of mental health disorders but also have the lowest intentions to seek help (Ciarrochi et. al., 2002; Kulkarni & Velhal, 2023). Because they are unlikely to seek help, it is important for others who see the potential cause to help intervene. The purpose of this study is to investigate the …

Sisu, Kaizen, And American Management: An Exploratory Study Of Cross-Cultural Approaches To Organizational Success, Bryan Hagenbarth
Honors Theses
Abstract Introduction
This thesis, “Sisu, Kaizen, and American Management: An Exploratory Study of Cross-Cultural Approaches to Organizational Success,” explores the interplay of cultural management methodologies across three nations – Finland, Japan, and the United States. It proposes a hybrid organizational model that integrates the principles of Sisu, Kaizen, and the American Dream (respectively) to common business practices.
Through the idea of “cross-cultural analysis,” this study delves into the underlying cultural frameworks – termed "human hardware" – that shape societal values and behaviors. The goal therein is to analyze the influencing characteristics that affect their adoption (and effectiveness) of foreign management …
Characterization Of Aromatic Stationary Phases For Uses In High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Anastasia Davis
Characterization Of Aromatic Stationary Phases For Uses In High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Anastasia Davis
Honors Theses
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is an analytical chemist technique used to separate a sample into its components to characterize and study a specific molecule or compound. Traditionally, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography in different industries, such as the environmental and pharmaceutical fields, uses stationary phases that are already well characterized, such as the C18 stationary phase for separation. However, aromatic stationary phases have recently been produced, which have phenyl groups bonded to the interior surface of the column. Still, they have not been well characterized because of how modern they are. This project characterized several aromatic stationary phases (Biphenyl, pentafluorophenyl, and …

Effects Of Acute Pain With Cold Water Limb Submersion On Cognitive Performance Of Simple Span Tasks, Kyle J. Miller
Effects Of Acute Pain With Cold Water Limb Submersion On Cognitive Performance Of Simple Span Tasks, Kyle J. Miller
Honors Theses
Pushing through aches and pain is a ritual for many. It is often overlooked that pain is a physical as well as mental phenomenon. It is well established that chronic pain increasingly affects performance the longer the duration and the higher the intensity. Performance in acute pain is less established for complex and simple span tasks. Previous research suggests only complex tasks are negatively affected by painful stimuli. This study seeks to confirm previous literature on complex span tasks and test if simple span tasks are affected by performance and pain intensities. 34 participants completed either the digit span test …

Aroma Comparison Of Different Pawpaw Cultivars From The Kentucky State University Pawpaw Research Program, Lauren A. Miskimen
Honors Theses
The aim of this study was to perform an analysis on the volatile profile differences in six pawpaw cultivars. There are over 30 pawpaw cultivars known to exist, and the flavor differences can be quite different for each; however, limited flavor analytical work has been done to understand which flavor compounds could be causing those differences. Recent work in Dr. Zyzak’s lab using gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) has identified key aroma compounds in the KSU-AtwoodTM cultivar. However, little is known about the other cultivars. This approach involved two steps: using a combination of GC-O and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to …
Why Ptsd Is Not Discussed Within Law Enforcement, Emma R. Leitenberger
Why Ptsd Is Not Discussed Within Law Enforcement, Emma R. Leitenberger
Honors Theses
Recently in society, there is a notice that law enforcement officers are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Those who suffer from PTSD must meet Criteria A through E and then meet the exposure criteria. There are many potential reasons as to why these officers are not coming forward to receive help. Police officers struggle to come forward because of stigma and police subculture. There is a perceived stigma that those who come forward to receive any help for mental health struggles are weak individuals. The police subculture plays into that stigma because if other officers see an officer going …
When Do Justices Vote Against Their Ideology?, Ember Bowman
When Do Justices Vote Against Their Ideology?, Ember Bowman
Honors Theses
This paper examines the inherently political nature of the U.S. Supreme Court, focusing on the appointment process, judicial behavior, and the influence of public opinion and how those cause justices to vote against their ideologies. The Supreme Court was created to be an independent judiciary, however, today that proves to be untrue. It analyzes constitutional provisions and the historical development of the Court’s powers, drawing on Federalist No. 78 to emphasize the importance of judicial independence. This study highlights the role of the President and Senate in appointing justices, exploring how political and demographic criteria affect nominations. Additionally, it addresses …

Friend Or Faux: A Scientific Comparison Of Reciprocal Relationships And Parasocial Relationships And Their Psychological Effects, Emma J. Krouse
Honors Theses
The prominence of social media in our society has led to an increase in the presence of parasocial relationships—a relationship in which someone perceives another person as having an interpersonal relationship with them, despite not interacting with the media user directly. Our current body of literature has produced little understanding of how these relationships compare to reciprocal relationships, in terms of their psychological ramifications. Specifically, there is little consensus in the literature about what factors of well-being are most impacted by sustaining parasocial relationships. This study aimed to investigate these gaps in knowledge and compare how these different types of …
Independent Mediation: A Restorative Justice Approach To Conflict Resolution Among College Roommates, Sarah Morris
Independent Mediation: A Restorative Justice Approach To Conflict Resolution Among College Roommates, Sarah Morris
Honors Theses
College roommates significantly impact students' college experience. Universities have traditionally aimed to improve roommate satisfaction through pairing strategies, but evolving technology trends regarding students independently selecting roommates via social media have limited this application. This research proposes an alternative: equipping students with informal restorative justice training to independently manage roommate conflicts. Drawing on restorative justice principles, the training focuses on developing skills in active listening, framing dialogue, and crafting effective, non-transactional apologies. These methods foster accountability and empower students to collaboratively resolve conflicts without university intervention. This informal approach minimizes logistical burdens compared to formal restorative justice programs. The training …

American And German Environmental Policy: Differences In Institution Building Between The Great Lakes And Lake Constance, Thomas Johnson
Honors Theses
When it comes to the protection of water sources, the relationships between stakeholders around the Great Lakes region and the Lake Constance region differ remarkably. This is due to a variety of different reasons, the biggest reason being the major differences between the political norms of these two areas. During the 1960’s and 1970’s the relations between America and Canada and their respective ecological coalition groups were very different from those between Germany, Switzerland, Austria and their coalition groups. These differences resulted in a distinct evolution in the formation and handling of Transnational Advocacy Coalitions, or parapublic institutions, in the …
