The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale Nov 1973

The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale

Honors Theses

Parliament passed its first comprehensive public health act in 1848. Prior to that time Britain as well as other European countries had mostly just tolerated insanitary conditions.

In English medieval towns people threw their garbage onto the narrow streets where animals--pigs, cattle, ducks--roamed, Houses were built with projections over the streets which blocked light and ventilation. There were few qualms about slaughtering animals on the streets. The common method of sewerage was by cesspools which in some cases were built underneath the houses and in most cases were cleaned out only once every several years by the "dust-collectors". Even in …

Experimentation To Develop Procedures To Be Used In The Investigation Of The Effects Of Restriction On The Unmodified Dna Of The Bacteriophage Lamda, John Haynes Jun 1973

Experimentation To Develop Procedures To Be Used In The Investigation Of The Effects Of Restriction On The Unmodified Dna Of The Bacteriophage Lamda, John Haynes

Honors Theses

The results of experimentation approximately twenty years ago with variuos bacteriophages by Ralston and Krueger16, Anderson and Felix1, Luria and Human12, and by Bertani and Weigle2 have shown that the host range of a given phage depends directly on the bacterial strain on which the phage has last propagated. This event came to be known as host-induced modification or host-controlled variation. As this phage host range is controlled by the host environment and can be altered from one generation to another it has, according to Luria, made microbiology "the last stronghold of Lamarckism" …

A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay Apr 1972

A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay

Honors Theses

Lipid is associated with all of the major serum protein fractions of both the mallard duck and man. however, whereas the ρ lipoproteins predominate in man with little lipo-albumin evident, according to available literature, in ducks the lipo-albumin constitutes more than half of the serum lipoproteins, and a substantial lipo-prealbumin fraction is evident. Most studies of lipo-proteins are carried out on human serum primarily for the purpose of diagnosis of abnormalities. The stress response in many animals includes a rise in serum α-globulin levels, but its physiological basis is still speculative. While a consideration of the changes in lipoprotein distribution …

New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy Apr 1972

New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy

Honors Theses

One third to one half of marriages are destined to end in a divorce court. However, in the de jure system or orders, monogamous marriage is the only accepted form with sexual behavior limited thereto. The nuclear family is the economic and residential unit. The expectation is that the marriage should last for the lifetime of the spouses, although increasingly there are provisions for exceptional cases termed failure. Other popular expectations are that the woman will be the socializing agent and the male will be the economic agent. This thesis explores the changing nature of families and marriage.

The Fabians And Socialized Medicine : A Study Of Fabian Attitudes Toward National Health Services, Linda Mcintosh Jan 1972

The Fabians And Socialized Medicine : A Study Of Fabian Attitudes Toward National Health Services, Linda Mcintosh

Honors Theses

Concentrating on the Minority Report of the Royal Commission on the Poor Law (1909), the National Insurance Act (1911), the Beveridge Report (1942), and the National Insurance and National Health Service Acts (1946), this thesis studies the various Fabian attitudes and philosophies toward British health services. No one "Fabian program" existed; the Society did not, as a single body, endorse specific programs or ideas, allowing its members freedom of thought and opinion. Inside Fabian publications this policy is enunciated:

This pamphlet, like all publications of the Fabian Society, represents not the collective view of the Society, but only the view …

Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day Dec 1971

Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day

Honors Theses

After the end of the Napoleonic wars, the appearance of Europe was changed almost to that of the eighteenth century. France had been returned to her old borders, the multitude of little kingdoms in Italy and Germany had been reinstated, and Russia had taken back the portion of Poland that she had acquired in 1793. The general alliance of all European countries against a superior France was discontinued as soon as France had lost that position. It had been nothing more than one of the agreements that European countries made when they were under pressure. The enemy was only the …

The Role Of D-Gluconic Acid In The Regulation Of The Synthesis Of The Enzymes Of The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Steven C. Quay Aug 1971

The Role Of D-Gluconic Acid In The Regulation Of The Synthesis Of The Enzymes Of The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Steven C. Quay

Honors Theses

Induction of Entner-Duodoroff pathway enzymes in Pseudomonas fluorescens was investigated to study the role of gluconate as a possible inducer. Glucose oxidase-deficient mutants were isolated and characterized. One of these mutants, gox-7, was deficient in particulate glucose oxidase; another mutant, gox-17, was deficient in particulate glucose and gluconate oxidase activities. Gluconate, but not glucose, induced synthesis of gluconokinase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydratase in both mutants. High constitute levels of 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate aldolase were found when both mutants were grown on glucose. Growth of parent and both mutant strains on glycerol also resulted in high levels of Entner-Doudoroff pathway enzymes. It was concluded …

The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning Apr 1971

The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to trace the quick rise and

equally sudden fall of the Virginia State Farmers' Alliance. Emphasis

was given to the unique socio-economic conditions prevalent in Southern

Virginia during the latter part of the nineteenth century which forced

individual farmers into cooperation, and to the vacillating political

situation which precipitated the death of the Virginia Farmers' Alliance.

The structures and activities of the Alliance received particular attention

because they were extremely important in attracting and maintaining

membership.

"The Beau Ideal Of A Soldier" : Brigadier General Charles Dimmock, Eugene M. Sanchez-Saavedra Jan 1971

"The Beau Ideal Of A Soldier" : Brigadier General Charles Dimmock, Eugene M. Sanchez-Saavedra

Honors Theses

Charles Dimmock (1800-1863), the subject of this biography, played "many parts" in his lifetime; Soldier, Educator, Hero, Businessman, Engineer, Promoter, Family man and Civil Servant. A northerner by birth, Dimmock adopted the state of Virginia as his mistress and place of residence and he devoted the last twenty years of his life to the state's military and civil development.

With Richmond, Virginia, in the 1840's and 50's, as his stage, Dimmock, who was certainly the hero of his own biography, worked with an astonishing variety of supporting players, ranging from the top civil and military leaders in America to the …

Dairy Farms And Agricultural Prosperity In Virginia, 1890-1915, Harold E. Conover Apr 1970

Dairy Farms And Agricultural Prosperity In Virginia, 1890-1915, Harold E. Conover

Honors Theses

In the two-hundred-fifty plus years from the Jamestown landing to the first shots of the Civil War a careless, staple crop agriculture wrought havoc on thousands of acres in Tidewater and Piedmont Virginia. A Virginian looked around him in the Spring of 1859 and was moved to write: "Every county of Virginia from the Seaboard to the head of tidewater now present a standing monument against the ruthless destroyer tobacco, in a wilderness of piney old fields and gullied hillsides..."

1960 : The Dilemma Of Adlai Stevenson, Robert A. Kester Apr 1969

1960 : The Dilemma Of Adlai Stevenson, Robert A. Kester

Honors Theses

The Presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953-61, seemed to many Americans to be an "era of good feeling." The hard divisions over the Korean War and McCarthyism had been healed, and the country enjoyed peace and prosperity; "I like Ike" was more than just a political slogan--it was a national sentiment.

Yet, to the liberals in America, Eisenhower seemed to be merely a latter-day McKinley. To the liberals, this peace and prosperity was a euphemism for the stagnation and drift caused by the inaction of the Eisenhower Administration.

So, to most American liberals, with their terrible sense of urgency, the …

Concise Abstraction: J.D. Salinger, Michael J. Durkin Apr 1969

Concise Abstraction: J.D. Salinger, Michael J. Durkin

Honors Theses

The works of J, D. Salinger have progressed in several ways from his earliest published works. The subject matter has changed in an attempt to meet the purposes of the author, and I believe that these stales or purposes of the author fit into four main groups—the observer, the philosopher, the preacher, and the mystic.

Richard Hooker And John Locke : Political Theory In Perspective, Alice M. Justice Jan 1969

Richard Hooker And John Locke : Political Theory In Perspective, Alice M. Justice

Honors Theses

John Locke in his Second Treatise on Civil Government quoted extensively from Richard Hooker's Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. It has often been taken for granted that Hooker was a precursor of the political theories of the origen of government, the consent of the governed, and sovereignty as developed and perfected by Locke. The historical and philosophical problem to be considered in this thesis is the relationship of Hooker to Locke: the purpose of the two works, the particular development of ideas in each, the concepts borrowed or shared, and the historical realities and philosophical outlooks which contribute to their distinctive …

The Court Of Star Chamber, Susan Agee Jan 1969

The Court Of Star Chamber, Susan Agee

Honors Theses

The Court of star Chamber in the last decade of the reign of Elizabeth had great prominence in the life of Tudor England. It was an efficient model or a typical Tudor institution, yet its uniqueness was recognized as early as the 1570's by Sir Thomas Smith. In later years, it abused its power and became a symbol of Stuart tyranny, but, during this period, it was a necessary and a respected body. A distinction should be made between the Star Chamber and the Privy Council. Besides the slight difference in its membership, the star Chamber was an exclusively judicial …

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson Jan 1967

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show how various plays written in the 1930's reflected economic, political, religious, social, psychological, moral and ethical attitudes of the depression years. To achieve this and, the writer gathered material from the ten Pulitzer Prize winning plays of the 1930's, as well as other significant works of the decade as mentioned in secondary sources. No effort has been made to fit these plays into the time in which they were written. Instead, the writer has attempted to show the times as they were presented by the dramatists of the thirties.

The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell Jan 1967

The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell

Honors Theses

The Aaron Burr trial was one of the most interesting cases in American history. Not only was the testimony at th einquiry significant but all events leading to the trial were important. Only those occurrences in Burr's life which led to his trial are described, since personal situations have no bearing on the case. The trial itself has been done with as much detail as possible in order to make the outcome of the inquest understandable.

The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows Apr 1966

The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows

Honors Theses

Temperance is an organized reform began at the end of the American Revolutionary War, its leaders inspired by the ravages dealt by alcoholics to the soldiers and sailors. At first self-control was desired; later self-denial was its dominant theme. Limited as it was, the temperance crusade, led by the aristocracy and the clergy, was naturally gradual in acquiring acceptance and strength. The course of its development from the 1780's until the mid-1830's was one of moderate demands, as compared with the later extremism, and one led by the fiery clerics and their assemblies, compared to the later common lay leadership.

A Summary Of Existing Rural Land Use Legislation In Virginia, John W. Russell Jan 1966

A Summary Of Existing Rural Land Use Legislation In Virginia, John W. Russell

Honors Theses

This study is an attempt to bring related statutes together concerning land use in Virginia, presenting them in a simplified manner so that they can be read and understood by the layman. It is intended by no means to be taken as authoritative nor complete in detail. For the details and omission made herein, the Code of Virginia should be consulted.

Persons who are interested in conservation and development both local and state, may find here what laws exist in Virginia, that may be applied to land planning.

Planning And Democracy In France, Larry G. Massanari Apr 1965

Planning And Democracy In France, Larry G. Massanari

Honors Theses

In the beginning of 1962, France launched its Fourth Plan to cover the period 1962-1965, and entered its sixteenth year of economic planning, Parodoxically, France which has so frequently seemed determined to demonstrate to the world an absolute incapacity for self-government has at the same time carried out a complicated experiment in economic planning, the results of which have frequently been brilliant; this is not to suggest that through planning the French have found answers to all of the many difficulties which still face them. It was immediately after World War II that France embarked upon their experiment in planning. …

A Comparison Of The Responses Of Achievers And Underachievers In A Junior High School On A Biographical Questionnaire, Claude Ashburn Sandy Jan 1965

A Comparison Of The Responses Of Achievers And Underachievers In A Junior High School On A Biographical Questionnaire, Claude Ashburn Sandy

Honors Theses

The purpose of the present study is to discover some of the biographical factors (personal, family, and environmental) which are characteristic of a majority of underachievers in junior high school. The discovery of these factors may lead to the development of an instrument which would assist in the detection, early in school, of an underachieving predisposition. This seems to be a logical possibility in view of a study by Shaw and Mccuen (1960). Their results indicated individual patterns of academic achievement for male and female underachievers beginning early in elementary school. Further, the classification of these factors by content may …

Mary Baker G. Eddy : A Preparation, A Discovery And A Culmination, G. Elaine Johnson May 1964

Mary Baker G. Eddy : A Preparation, A Discovery And A Culmination, G. Elaine Johnson

Honors Theses

In a study of any religion, particularly Christian Science, it is difficult to find unbiased and historical source material. Therefore the student must accept prejudiced views and make his own judgment on value and authenticity. In such a manner the research and execution of this paper have been completed. Although personal opinions have been included, they have been based on the material presented by both advocates of and antagonists to Mrs. Eddy.

To determine the scope of this paper, it was necessary to find the culmination of her discovery before the actual organization of her church began to form. Although …

The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders Jan 1962

The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders

Honors Theses

Although time has obscured his reputation, Robert carter Nicholas exercised considerable influence in pre-Revolutionary Virginia. Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington and other familiar revolutionary figures knew him well and respected both his ability and integrity. In fact, Nicholas had already established himself as a power in Virginia politics when the men mentioned above were just stepping onto the stage of Virginia history.

Two Women From The Past, Barbara Goodwyn May 1961

Two Women From The Past, Barbara Goodwyn

Honors Theses

The Elizabethan period was undoubtedly one of the richest in the history of England. After a period of turmoil, Elizabeth's reign gave England a time of internal peace. Making the best of the opportunity, the English burst out in all directions: exploration,. drama, trade, poetry. The importance of women grew in this period along with everything else, with a natural development of freedom. Duke Frederick of Wuttemberg, visiting England in 1602, remarked that "the women have more liberty than perhaps in any other place." Twentieth century minds would disagree that the women had freedom, but in comparison to other countries …

The Life Of William Wirt Henry, Harvie J. Skelton May 1958

The Life Of William Wirt Henry, Harvie J. Skelton

Honors Theses

Many great historians contribute much to our heritage, literature and history, but the people of the United States of America fail to remember or recognize these men for their contributions because a historian's life is not considered exciting enough to write about. In the following chapters this author will attempt to bring to light the life of a courageous, dedicated man.

William Wirt Henry is probably best known for his literary masterpiece, The Life, Letters and Correspondence of Patrick Henry. His works and activities beyond that are numerous, but not generally known. Mr. Henry lived during this country's most turbulent's …

A History Of The T.C. Williams School Of Law, James R. Sipe Aug 1955

A History Of The T.C. Williams School Of Law, James R. Sipe

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to give the events which have occurred during the last eighty-five years which directly affect the history of the T.C. Williams School of Law.

There are many reasons why the history of the Law School is important. Since it was established in 1870, many distinguished and capable lawyers have received their legal education from this institution. In our society today the well-trained lawyer plays an extremely vital part. As a basic foundation he must develop a legally trained mind and be able to apply the correct principles of law by logical reasoning. To accomplish …

The Colonial Sources Of George Mason's Declaration Of Rights, Louise Ellyson Wiley May 1943

The Colonial Sources Of George Mason's Declaration Of Rights, Louise Ellyson Wiley

Honors Theses

I am attempting in this paper to describe the colonial ideas and institutions, which must have influenced George Mason in the writing of his Declaration of Rights for the Virginia Convention of 1776. First, I will show the effect of European thought and customs in the colonies. The English liberal tradition, which culminated in the seventeenth century struggle for civil liberties and a constitutional monarchy, is quite important. Since the Declaration of Rights can not be understood unless its immediate background is known, I will discuss the more American aspects of colonial life, which must have affected George Mason's political …

Administrative Reorganization Of The Government Of The State Of Virginia Under Governor Byrd, Robert Greg Barr Apr 1943

Administrative Reorganization Of The Government Of The State Of Virginia Under Governor Byrd, Robert Greg Barr

Honors Theses

Administrative reorganization is a tremendous subject. In the final analysis, it involves the history of administrative organization, proposals for its improvement, reforms in its structure, desirability of further changes, and the adequacy and beneficial effects of changes already instituted, as well as the broad ramifications of governmental theory inextricably related to any scheme of administrative structure. It is a study of the entire executive branch of a government in all its aspects. These subjects offer interesting fields of research for the student of government and history, as well as the student of economics in some instances. Exploitation of the opportunities …
