The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen Jan 1991

The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen

Honors Theses

My thesis rests on the notion that, because of the increase of freedoms in the Soviet Union today, many republics are demanding that their autonomy be restored and that this nationality crisis, an unforeseen and unwanted byproduct of recent reforms, has grown into such a disaster that it is now actually impairing the whole reform movement in the Soviet Union as civil unrest and strife are beginning to threaten the stability of this huge empire.

Ethnic identity is not something that can be hidden, changed, forced, or converted, nor will national and cultural roots simply disappear over time. Thus, the …

The Effect Of Live Music Versus Tape-Recorded Music On Participation Rates Of Two Populations, Sara F. Flink Oct 1990

The Effect Of Live Music Versus Tape-Recorded Music On Participation Rates Of Two Populations, Sara F. Flink

Honors Theses

For a number of years, differences have existed in the training of music therapists. In some countries, music therapists are trained first and foremost as musicians, and secondly as therapists. Other countries allow music therapy to be practiced by music psychologists, physicians, or educators. Both sides employ varying arguments. Bunt (1988) feels that therapists are either experienced musicians with minimal training in developmental, therapeutic skills, or experienced clinicians lacking in many areas of musical expertise. Bunt further delineates between the two schools of thought by describing how one music therapist may use improvisation to interact with a client and his …

The Effects Of Locus Of Control And Death Education On Death Attitudes, Lydia A. Williams May 1990

The Effects Of Locus Of Control And Death Education On Death Attitudes, Lydia A. Williams

Honors Theses

The relationship of locus of control and death education on death attitudes was examined across a population of college students. Students beginning a death education course, students finishing a death education course, and mortuary science students, completed Rotter's I-E scale, Hardt's Death Attitude Scale, and questions on personal beliefs. No significant difference of death attitude was found between the three groups, although internality was found to be significantly correlated to favorable death attitude. Statistical analysis did not support the hypothesis that death education positively affects death attitudes, however, the data do reveal that those individuals with an internal locus of …

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe Apr 1990

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe

Honors Theses

Studying the structure and the effectiveness of ads can suggest how and why advertisers' commercials appeal to consumers. Narrowing this study down to one medium-television, one product--athletic shoes, and one audience-teenagers, can better identify commercials' appeals and their effectiveness. The study of television athletic shoe advertisements, as viewed by teenagers, provides primary data about both the ads themselves and about their appeals to the 15- to 18-year-old audience.

A Contingency Analysis Of The Management Control Systems In Tennessee Hospitals /, Cynthia A. Tiegs

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine if the presence and perceived effectiveness of management control systems in nursing departments are contingent on the variables identified in the reviewed literature, The contingent variables investigated were the size of the hospital, the number of services offered, and whether it was profit or not-for-profit. The four control mechanisms examined were; control over inventory and capital equipment, and the staffing and monitoring of nursing care hours. Nursing directors were asked to indicate the effectiveness of each of these management control systems

Use Of Solid-Phase Resins In Pesticide Monitoring, Jenny Bittinger Jan 1989

Use Of Solid-Phase Resins In Pesticide Monitoring, Jenny Bittinger

Honors Theses

The feasibility of using solid-phase resins for monitoring concentrations of pesticides in water was examined. Efforts were made to ascertain relationships between concentrations of a pesticide (methoxychlor) in water and on a resin (AXD-2) under laboratory conditions. Solutions of pesticide in water were drawn through columns of resin. Methylene Chloride was used to absorb the pesticide from the resin. Gas chromatography and ultraviolet spectrophotometry were used to measure concentrations of pesticide.

Effects Of Disability Status Of Test Administrator On Attitudes Towards Disabled Person Scores, Paul T. Hanson Dec 1988

Effects Of Disability Status Of Test Administrator On Attitudes Towards Disabled Person Scores, Paul T. Hanson

Honors Theses

The effect of test administrator disability status was examined in relation to a standardized scale which measures attitudes towards disabled persons. Conducting the study on two different dates with a total of 88 subjects it was found that filling out the attitude scale in a group with either: a visually impaired; Quadriplegic using a wheelchair; or able-bodied administrator did not result in a significant difference in recorded attitudes. There was, however, an interesting finding in that there was a wide variance of scores within each group. This encourages further data analysis.

A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong Oct 1988

A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong

Honors Theses

Just what is to be understood by the term "cost-benefit analysis" ("benefit-cost analysis")? The question itself arises from a curiosity into how government decisions (which affect all) are made. This paper gives an elementary discussion of constitutive parts, raising and responding to some initial criticisms. It seems fairly evident, unneedful of additional explanation or elaboration. The individual on the street would simply declare that it sounded like some rather ordinary decision-making process which involved the consideration of the costs and benefits incurred by the paths of action that might be selected. "Ordinary" means accessible to anyone and not the exclusive …

Use Of Economic Instruments In Biodiversity Conservation Projects: The Sustainability Of Projects In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Amy Lyons May 1988

Use Of Economic Instruments In Biodiversity Conservation Projects: The Sustainability Of Projects In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Amy Lyons

Honors Theses

Under what conditions do biodiversity conservation projects that use economic incentives promote the most significant and sustainable biodiversity protection? The study of how nations can best invest their resources to promote conservation while simultaneously encouraging a sustainable form of economic development has recently become a major focus for ecologically rich, less-developed countries. There have been many innovative and successful attempts at combining biodiversity protection with economic development, and others that have done more harm than good. Since there is no guaranteed recipe for a successful project, it is crucial to examine projects in detail to discern which type of project …

Reliability and validity is stronger for the child form. Suggestions are made for possible …

Lady Jane Grey The Nine Days Queen : A Study Of The Dynastic Questions, Religious Reforms, And Unique Personalities That Influenced Her Fate, Susan Elizabeth Plunkett Apr 1988

Lady Jane Grey The Nine Days Queen : A Study Of The Dynastic Questions, Religious Reforms, And Unique Personalities That Influenced Her Fate, Susan Elizabeth Plunkett

Honors Theses

Lady Jane Grey's short life was one of constant uncertainty, derogatory remarks from her parents, and manipulation; yet she retained her faith till the end. Her story was intriguing if not for its romance and pathos, then for the way in which it reflected the chaotic polltical, social, and religious tendencies of this period in English history. It was a time of intrigues and conspiracies where the true desire for nothing less than outright greed and a cut-throat willingness to employ any means to attain a goal ran rampant. Her llfe provided a unique perspective from which to view the …

William Courtenay's England : An Aristocratic Bishop In The Fourteenth Century, Michael P. Gwaltney Apr 1988

William Courtenay's England : An Aristocratic Bishop In The Fourteenth Century, Michael P. Gwaltney

Honors Theses

Despite religious controversy that threatened the church and

endangered the state, William Courtenay, as an aristocratic bishop,

succeeded in preserving the traditional structure of the medieval

English Church. During the second half of the fourtheenth century,

England sustained reversals abroad in the renewed war with France.

The military setbacks aggrevated the domestic unrest, which existed

under the uncertain leadership of senile Edward III and then young

Richard II. Church and state in medieval society were so closely

interwoven by means of a cohesive religion that "any substantial

alteration of the church system could have led to a revolution of a …

Controlling Corporate Crime Through Reform Of The Criminal Justice System, Mary A. Vogt Jan 1988

Controlling Corporate Crime Through Reform Of The Criminal Justice System, Mary A. Vogt

Honors Theses

Corporate crime, according to Clinard and Yeager (1980: 16), "is any act that is committed by corporations which is punishable by the state, regardless of whether it is punished under administrative, civil, or criminal law". This form of crime is a major social problem within our society (Kramer, 1982). The purpose of this project is to examine a variety of proposals to improve the capability of the criminal justice system to control the problem of corporate crime, and to make specific recommendations for reform.

Classroom Observation Of School-Age Addh, Conduct Disorder, And Depressed Children, Kristin S. Allan Apr 1987

Classroom Observation Of School-Age Addh, Conduct Disorder, And Depressed Children, Kristin S. Allan

Honors Theses

Eight subjects were observed during classroom activity to determine the context of their social behavior. Four subjects were internalizers and the other four were externalizers. Subjects were observed at an inpatient psychiatric facility for children. It was hypothesized that externalizers would exhibit more off-task behaviors and internalizers would engage in solitary play more often. Results showed trends which supported the hypotheses. Implications of medication effects, as well as further research using a more molecular coding scheme were discussed.

Out Of Control: An Exploration Into The Dynamics Of Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia And The Consequences For The Sufferer And Those Around Her, Shenandoah M. Cardwell

Honors Theses

A theoretical and personal exploration into the dynamics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia was conducted with reviews of literature, interviews, and personal accounts. A basic definition of the problem according to the DSM-III was stated. Discussed in detail are factors which contribute to a possible predisposition for developing an eating disorder; these include the physiological/biological, psychological, familial and societal. The Allelopathic Effects Of Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana) Berry Juice, Steven R. Parris Mar 1987

The Allelopathic Effects Of Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana) Berry Juice, Steven R. Parris

Honors Theses

This paper is divided into three major sections. The first section is a limited overview of the field of allelopathy, from its origins to its potential future. Since the field of allelopathy is relatively young and there are only a very few texts on allelopathy available, much of this information is taken directly from journal articles. The second section reviews the publications concerning Phytolacca americana (pokeweed) and some of its close relatives, as well as information on a number of interesting and potentially useful compounds that have been isolated from them. The third section describes a series of laboratory experiments …

The Effects Of Strain Differences On The Binding Of Concavalian A To Mouse Sperm, Lisa A. Mckay Jun 1986

The Effects Of Strain Differences On The Binding Of Concavalian A To Mouse Sperm, Lisa A. Mckay

Honors Theses

The current study, lectins were used as genetic probes to determine the phenotype of the sperm from different strains of mice. Lectins are proteins of non-immune origin, which bind to specific carbohydrates (McCoy, 1986). Being that virtually all cell membranes contain carbohydrate components, lectins have been used to identify all types of cells. In this study, a biotinylated lectin Concavalian A (Con A) derived from Canavalia ensiformis, was used and binding was detected using an avidin-biotin peroxidase (ABP) complex technique. The object of the current research was to 1) determine if mouse strain differences have an effect on lectin binding, …

Kate Chopin : A Different Look, Kimberly Ann Francis Apr 1986

Kate Chopin : A Different Look, Kimberly Ann Francis

Honors Theses

Kate Chopin? Who is she? This is a common resonse of many people who are not familiar with this outstanding woman writer of the late 1800's and early 1900's. In fact, this same question would more likely have gone unanswered then than today. For the most part, many of her contemporaries are prominently discussed and read today because they enjoyed popularity while they were alive. They not only established literary voges; in many cases they gave the public what it wanted to read. Such writers include Mark Twain and Stephen Crane as well as Edith Wharton and Ellen Glasgow. Kate …
