Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein

Honors Theses

In the United States, heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the adult population (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1991). Unlike many of the major causes of death, heart disease is largely preventable through changes in health related behaviors. Although a portion of heart disease risk is attributed to genetics, the primary cause of heart disease development lies in the eating habits, exercise behaviors, and smoking habits of the individual.

From 1530 to 1597 the central government, often with inspiration from local initiatives, enacted a series of laws which attempted to address the causes of the problems as perceived by the public, in an effort to quell popular fears and anxieties regarding vagrancy.

Leading Change In The Healthcare Industry : Sentara Health Systems, Norfolk, Virginia, Heather S. Heitz

Honors Theses

After going through the steps of implementing a change in Sentara Health Systems, I learned that using my visionary and participatory leadership skills contributed to my success in leading a change in the organization. First, I used my visionary leadership skills to encourage each individual to envision processes, to support each other, and to use resources which would motivate the group to do something that they wanted to do. Also, I used a participatory leadership to ensure that the subordinates were involved in the group's goals throughout the change process. By empowering people to have responsibility when changes are made …

Diners In America : An Evolutionary Process, Jill Gardner Jan 1995

Diners In America : An Evolutionary Process, Jill Gardner

Honors Theses

A diner is now, as it has always been, a restful spot. It is a restful spot that is currently branching out into chains to capitalize on this same sentiment all over the nation. It focuses on the caricature like qualities that people recognize in a diner. People are willing to pay a little more, not much more, but a little more, to get away from McDonald's. These restaurants have been built with old memories but with new conveniences and some new menus. Finally, with health food on the march, I have to ask--where else can you eat a big …

The Entrepreneurial Leadership Puzzle : The Pieces You Need To Start A Business, Charles S. Ribaudo Jan 1995

The Entrepreneurial Leadership Puzzle : The Pieces You Need To Start A Business, Charles S. Ribaudo

Honors Theses

While having effective followers is critical, the leadership attributes of the entrepreneur is just as important. Gardner and several other leadership scholars have done significant research on the attributes of leaders. The entrepreneur is just one of many leaders that possess the necessary leadership attributes for success. Starting a company requires such a tremendous time commitment that the leaders within it must be able to handle the stress and ambiguity that goes along with it. This takes leadership to handle this ambiguity of whether they wilt meet the next paycheck. Employees, investors and customers will be looking to them to …

Does Gender Influence Leadership?, Stacy L. Jones Jan 1995

Does Gender Influence Leadership?, Stacy L. Jones

Honors Theses

The question of gender's influence on leadership styles is an important topic in the modern organizational world. The face of the organization is changing, with new demands being made of management. Organizations no longer depend on rigid hierarchies to achieve their goals, but rather these organizations seek innovation and communication. To achieve these new objectives, organizations are searching for leadership from their executives, managers, and employees.

It is of primary importance to determine whether men and women demonstrate the same leadership behaviors or demonstrate significantly different styles of leadership. This knowledge may substantially aid an organization in utilizing the most …

The Multiple Sclerosis Society : One Thing People With Ms Can Count On, Chris O'Neil

Honors Theses

In my study of the Central Virginia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, I have chosen not to focus on the departure of the Executive Director, Jacqui Kozsuch, who is leaving for personal reasons. Based on my research and observation, I think that the chapter has made a turn for the better and has the groundwork laid for future success. All …

Personal Leadership : A Course Proposal For The Jepson School Curriculum, Carrie S. Smith Jan 1995

Personal Leadership : A Course Proposal For The Jepson School Curriculum, Carrie S. Smith

Honors Theses

One growth area within the field of leadership studies is the concept of personal leadership. Personal leadership encourages identifying and living by one's own core values. Teaching personal leadership means identifying specific practices, exercises, disciplines and habits that aid the individual in learning to lead a principle-centered life. Since the material is translatable into all realms of a leaders life, teaching personal leadership methods to Jepson students will aid them in gaining a better understanding of themselves and will prove to be a practical preparatory course for leadership …

A Cross Cultural Analysis Of Leadership : Operation Smile Philippines Medical Mission 1995, Elizabethharris F. Harris Jan 1995

A Cross Cultural Analysis Of Leadership : Operation Smile Philippines Medical Mission 1995, Elizabethharris F. Harris

Honors Theses

One can not examine leadership in isolate from the context in which it is occurring. National and international factors, as well as culture, are key in understanding leadership. Factors such as a history of political oppression impact how Americans are perceived, and considerations such as religious factors impact the workings of the team. An awareness of these factors is imperative to team leadership, as mistakes or insensitivity can be detrimental to team effectiveness and relations.

It seems that at this stage of the leadership evolution, there is really no international model which effectively accounts for the leadership within a cross-cultural …

Leadership And Corporate Giving, Greg Parisi Jan 1995

Leadership And Corporate Giving, Greg Parisi

Honors Theses

Students at the University of Richmond and many other independent colleges and universities in Virginia are the primary beneficiaries of a remarkable labor of which they are, in most cases, completely unaware. The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, put quite simply, raises funds from Virginia corporations to be distributed to its fifteen member institutions.

In turn, the needs of the VFIC have created an opportunity for inquiry into corporate giving from the perspective of the individual corporate executive. This paper details both my efforts to fulfill the needs of the VFIC and to gain insight into the leadership issues surrounding …

Urban Forestry The Trees Of The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Cathy Payne

Honors Theses

The University of Chattanooga was founded in 1886. In 1969, the university merged with the University of Tennessee system and became the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The UTC campus is surrounded by buildings and has sidewalks and streets, which can produce an unfavorable environment for many tree species. Pavement and buildings create …

In 1993 OSHA "estimated 1.3 million employees in construction and general industry face significant asbestos exposure on the job." The estimate has not changed according to OSHA since 1989 (Department of Labor, 1989; 1993). These 1.3 million employees all deal with asbestos in unique work settings consequently vague laws concerning Personal Protective Equipment and asbestos exist. Why are these laws vague? Recall the general duty clause, 'keep your employees safe'. Occasional asbestos work settings must be addressed by Specialized Personal Protective Equipment. The employer must adapt, change, and keep in compliance of the law while protecting their employees.

Women And The American Legal System: All Men Are Created Equal, Jennifer L. Emma Apr 1994

Women And The American Legal System: All Men Are Created Equal, Jennifer L. Emma

Honors Theses

In the melting pot of American society, the concept of law cannot be underestimated. American society is based upon racial, ethnic, and religious diversity, all converged under one legal system. The premise of the American legal system is that everyone, regardless of their status in society, is held accountable under the same laws of the land. Since everyone is represented in the law, it is their civic duty to abide by these laws. The basis of a constitutional society is law; it replaced the old monarchy systems of Europe with one of equality. In the United States of the 1990's, …

Implementing Total Quality Management In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Jennifer H. Weiskopf Jan 1994

Implementing Total Quality Management In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Jennifer H. Weiskopf

Honors Theses

State government is in need of change. For the most part, there is a lack of coordination and communication from the top-down, bottom-up, between agencies, and within organizations. On the one hand, this can be attributed to the inefficiency of the public sector in general because it is one in which politics impacts every aspect of the government, but on the other hand, the culture of the public sector can be attributed to the leadership that is responsible for shaping this sector of society. The layers of bureaucracy and unnecessary procedures seem to frustrate everyone, but very few proactive steps …

International Educational Reform, Cristine Lipscomb Jan 1994

International Educational Reform, Cristine Lipscomb

John Gardner sent out a plea for humanity. He claimed that there is a crisis in leadership; a lack of competent leaders to meet today's challenges. Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard Jan 1994

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard

Honors Theses

It is important to create an accepting environment for children to begin to appreciate faith in God. Adults need to recognize that even though children may not be able to talk about God, they do have an ability to think about and appreciate God (Lester 174). Because children have an active imagination and are just beginning to develop some logic skills, this is an easy segue for a child to understand many of the stories and parables that adults may discount. When children ask questions, it is important to get them to think through the issue and to provide some …

Does Participation In Athletics Imbue Leadership, Scott E. Zimmer Jan 1994

Does Participation In Athletics Imbue Leadership, Scott E. Zimmer

Honors Theses

It is the opinion of this researcher that the debate over sport as a builder of leadership has not been settled with this study. While this is somewhat disappointing, I hope that the research presented in this paper will serve to create an awareness as to the study of leadership qualities and abilities of those physically participating in the sport, the athletes themselves. They are the largely-ignored majority in sport and leadership study, a condition which must be addressed in the literature if sport leadership investigation is to become indeed holistic.

While the purpose of this research was to determine …

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron Jan 1994

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron

Honors Theses

The following pages are a collection of three case studies assembled with the intent to facilitate discussion about key leadership issues related to the public policy realm. Critics of leadership studies have often posted to the theoretical nature o the discipline to criticize the worth. One method to teach leadership is the utilization of case studies, or "real world" examples. If your position is that leadership can only be taught through practical experience, these case studies should present an interesting exercise. They seek to inculcate the idealistic world of theoretical studies with doses of realistic situations.

For these case studies …
