Auto-Ethnography As A Communicative And Therapeutic Means Of Addressing Eating Disorders, Julie Irvin
Auto-Ethnography As A Communicative And Therapeutic Means Of Addressing Eating Disorders, Julie Irvin
Honors Theses
Under the premise that human beings are natural storytellers, narratives are an essential part of our lives and the way we shape and form our stories impacts our daily activities. When life struggles transpire, we typically make sense of our world through narratives, which is why therapists sometimes draw upon narrative therapy. By exploring different types of narratives-the basic genre of a life-story, testimonio, literary narrative, ethnography, and auto-ethnography-the mode that presents itself as a viable means of intrapersonal communication, possibly producing change, is auto-ethnography. Examining the need for narrative within the conditions of eating disorders, the question arises as …
Synthesis Of Montiporynes A And B, Traci Jenelle Speed
Synthesis Of Montiporynes A And B, Traci Jenelle Speed
Honors Theses
This thesis reports the first complete synthesis of monriporynes A and B. isomeric diacetylenes that bear α, β unsaturated ketone functionalities. Recently isolated from the stony coral Montipora sp. these compounds are reported to possess in vitro cytotoxic activity against several human solid tumor cells. We have synthesized both isomers in three simple steps. In the first step, l-iodononyne was prepared by reacting 1-nonyne with N-iodosuccinimide and a catalytic amount of silver nitrate. This iodoalkyne was then coupled with propargyl alcohol using copper iodide as the catalyst to give 2,4dodecadiynyl alcohol. Finally, the diacetylenic alcohol was subjected to the Swern …
Quantitative Analysis Of Diepoxybutane Damage Within The Chicken Β-Globin Domain, André M. Pilon
Quantitative Analysis Of Diepoxybutane Damage Within The Chicken Β-Globin Domain, André M. Pilon
Honors Theses
In industrial polymer and synthetic rubber production facilities, workers are exposed to 1,3-butadiene. This compound is converted in vivo to 1,2,3,4-diepoxybutane (DEB) and has been linked to increased incidences of cancer in these individuals. Carcinogenesis has been attributed to formation of DEB induced DNA interstrand cross-links. Previous studies have demonstrated that DEB cross-links deoxyguanosine residues within 5'-GNC sequences in synthetic DNA, in restriction fragments, and in defined sequence nucleosomes. The current study utilized the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to examine DEB damage frequencies within nuclear genes, found within "open" regions of chromatin, as compared to regions of unexpressed sequence that …

Diversity And Community Structure Of Littoral Zone Macroinvertebrates In Southern Illinois Reclaimed Surface Mine Lakes, Thomas Heatherly Ii
Honors Theses
I sampled fourteen reclaimed surface mine lakes within the Sparta Illinois National Guard training facility for benthic macroinvertebrates in spring of 2003 as part of an overall environmental assessment of the property. The objectives of this research were: (1) to inventory the aquatic macroinvertebrates present; (2) to evaluate the current quality of the aquatic habitats so that the effects of subsequent management and development by the National Guard can be assessed; (3) examine which factors influence invertebrate community structure in these systems; and (4) observe the applicability of several commonly used stream bioassessment metrics to Midwestern surface mine lakes. A …
Fecal Coliforms And Antibiotic Resistance Of Tuckahoe Creek, Catherine C. Parker
Fecal Coliforms And Antibiotic Resistance Of Tuckahoe Creek, Catherine C. Parker
Honors Theses
The Tuckahoe Creek has been classified impaired by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) indicating that one of the following parameters exceed the accepted limits: pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), phosphates, nitrates, and concentration of fecal coliforms. Throughout the course of this study, two selected sites have been monitored monthly in order to measure these parameters. Route 288 is located near a construction site, and Route 621 is near Sycamore Creek Golf Course in a more rural area. The results from this study have shown that the fecal coliforms have been uniformly within the set legal limit of 1,000 …

Doing All You Can, Brother?': Visual Themes Of World War Ii American Propaganda Posters, Justin Rives Nicholas
Honors Theses
This thesis is a result of an in-depth analysis of the three thousand plus propaganda posters used in the United States during World War II. The bulk of these posters are housed at National Archives II in College Park, Maryland. The analysis was conducted within the context of several questions. What were the goals of the propagandists? How were those goals visually represented in the posters? What were the visual themes? Why were these goals and themes deemed necessary? How do the goals and themes fit into the overall context of a total war? The concept of being in a …

Effect Of Competitive Balance On Single Game Attendance In Major League Baseball, Thomas V. Richardson
Effect Of Competitive Balance On Single Game Attendance In Major League Baseball, Thomas V. Richardson
Honors Theses
Many studies have looked at competitive balance in sports. A majority of the competitive balance studies have looked at panel data sets covering multiple years, however. Many of these studies have looked at the distribution of winning percentages within a league over multiple seasons, looking to see if different teams have an ability to rise to the top of the league, or if the same teams always win (Balfour and Porter 1991; Butler 1995; Quirk and Fall 1997). Schmidt and Bern (2001) use the Gini coefficient to measure competitive balance for baseball seasons since 1900. This measure of competitive balance, …
Candy Apples And Other Tales Of Entropy, Brent Hayes Bonds
Candy Apples And Other Tales Of Entropy, Brent Hayes Bonds
Honors Theses
The following is a creative thesis. Comprised of six short stories, the work is bound by the aim of each story to convey that awareness is hardly ever a moment of triumph, but the acknowledgment and acceptance of all the imperfections and the unknowns that exist in our world. Chief among the themes of these stories is the idea of entropy, that is, the natural tendency of all things to progress from a state of order to one of disorder. While the majority of these stories embrace these ideals through the use of the same characters, though, at various points …
Spleen Rna Concentration And Male Oramentation In The Wild Turkey, William Wilson Boone
Spleen Rna Concentration And Male Oramentation In The Wild Turkey, William Wilson Boone
Honors Theses
The spleens of adult wild turkeys {Meleagris gallopavo) are their primary immune defense organ and produce many of the antibodies used throughout the body. During parasitic infection, more antibodies must be produced to protect the body from foreign antigens. This may cause the overall mass of the spleen and/or the concentration of RNA in the spleen, which translates DNA into protein antibodies, to increase. It has previously been shown that male turkeys infected with parasites have less pronounced external head ornamentation (snood length, number of side caruncles) than those left uninfected (Buchholz 1995). This difference in external characteristics may also …
Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent
Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent
Honors Theses
Indigenous education became prevalent in the ideology of the Mexican government after the Revolution on 1911. The leading school of thought about how to integrate Mexico’s indigenous population was led by anthropologists. Through indigenismo, the government adopted policies that would explore indigenous communities and promote them into the national identity. Bilingual education became one of the most important instruments of the movement under the direction of the Instituto Nacional Indigenista. I collected my data from a wealth of resources. One source of information the historical texts written on Mexican history. Anthropological texts also aided in the discussion of indigenous people …
Strong Black Woman: An Examination Of Cultural Images Of Black Women, Tamika Renee Montgomery
Strong Black Woman: An Examination Of Cultural Images Of Black Women, Tamika Renee Montgomery
Honors Theses
Through literary works and life experiences and in an effort to dispel negative images, an unrealistic image of a strong black woman has been presented to society. As a black woman surrounded by black women who have attempted to personify this superwoman image, and more importantly as a black woman who has been encouraged to adopt this image, I have done research to discover if this woman truly exists. I have read a number of literary works that span over the entire twentieth century, examined cultural and psychological studies relevant to the black woman. I also did research on the …
A Comparison Of Peaceful And Violent Separatist Movements, William Dorsey Pieschel
A Comparison Of Peaceful And Violent Separatist Movements, William Dorsey Pieschel
Honors Theses
The following work is an attempt to understand why separatist movements become violent. In any given region of the world under any given state, there will always be a group of people who are not content with the present order of government. If this group is large enough, it will most likely try to alter the structure of the government, which often takes the form of separatism. I want to understand the methods of these separatist movements and specifically, why some resort to violence and others do not. The first part of my thesis analyzes different separatist movements. I chose …

The Saint And Judith Female Conventions In Ouida's Held In Bondage, Strathmore, Friendship, And Moths, Hannah Lacey Bryant
The Saint And Judith Female Conventions In Ouida's Held In Bondage, Strathmore, Friendship, And Moths, Hannah Lacey Bryant
Honors Theses
The following work analyzes the usage Victorian conventions of the saint and Judith figures in Ouida’s female characters in her novels Held in Bondage, Strathmore, Friendship, and Moths. These eight characters are closely related to the stereot3(^ical representations of women in society during the time Ouida wrote; however, as Ouida became more experienced and acquainted with society, her usage of the conventions altered toward realistic rather than representative women. Of the saint figures, only one female, Vere of Moths, escapes from all stereotypes. The remaining three Alma of Held in Bondage, Lucille of Strathmore, and Etoile of Friendship definitive models …

Don't Worry... It [Corn] Won't Kill You: The Starlink Crisis, Kelly J. Price
Don't Worry... It [Corn] Won't Kill You: The Starlink Crisis, Kelly J. Price
Honors Theses
What would you do ... if someone told you that the food you just ate was not safe for human consumption? In 1999, consumers across the nation were faced with this fear and began to second-guess the food they had been accustomed to eating for years. After Kraft Foods' Taco Bell taco shells were recalled in September for containing traces of StarLink corn, a genetically modified corn hybrid not approved for human consumption, consumer confidence in U.S. corn by-products decreased and manufacturer credibility dwindled (Aventis stops, 2000). People wanted to know who to blame for the apparent food contamination problem. …
Ecuador's Indigenous University Movement, Uinpi: Reconstructing Identity In The Search For Equality, Joshua Gerber
Ecuador's Indigenous University Movement, Uinpi: Reconstructing Identity In The Search For Equality, Joshua Gerber
Honors Theses
The following chapters address Ecuadorian history, identity politics. and the education system to analyze UINPI's role in the reformation of indigenous identity. To provide a backdrop for UINPI's identity project, chapter one establishes a historical framework of the development of racialized constructions of indigenous identity in Ecuador. It utilizes Plumwood's hierarchical dualism to address the ways in which identity ideology justified and motivated the often-brutal socio-political domination of euro-mestizo peoples in Ecuador. Chapter two addresses the role of identity at UlNPI, arguing that the university's identity project is oriented towards the reformation of indigenous identity, rather than the representation of …
Analysis Of The Colby Quarterly Econometric Model Of The U.S. Economy Using The Economic Effects Of September 11th, Alison Culpen
Analysis Of The Colby Quarterly Econometric Model Of The U.S. Economy Using The Economic Effects Of September 11th, Alison Culpen
Honors Theses
The economic repercussions of September 11th are unique in that never before have economists needed to forecast and examine the impact of an event of such magnitude. This paper explains many of the economic effects of September l Ith, from the initial aftermath to recent developments. These effects are used to analyze the Colby Quarterly Econometric Model of the U.S. economy by simulating the model with actions taken by the government, such as an increase in spending, as well as other economic consequences resulting from September 11th. These simulations are then examined in more detail through multipliers that ultimately reveal …
The Boundaries Of Liberalism In A Global Era: A Critique Of John Stuart Mill, Chris Daly
The Boundaries Of Liberalism In A Global Era: A Critique Of John Stuart Mill, Chris Daly
Honors Theses
The following study examines three works of John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, Utilitarianism, and Three Essays on Religion, and their subsequent effects on liberalism. Comparing the notion on individual freedom espoused in On Liberty to the notion of the social welfare in Utilitarianism, this analysis posits that it is impossible for a political philosophy to have two ultimate ends. Thus, Mill's liberalism is inherently flawed. As this philosophy was the foundation of Mill's progressive vision for humanity that he discusses in his Three Essays on Religion, this vision becomes paradoxical as well. Contending that the neo-liberalist global economic order is …

Chapter 11 Of Nafta V. U.S. Democracy, Cara Mroczek
Honors Theses
The roots of the democratic system in the United States are deeply embedded within the compelling language of the Declaration of Independence. This document is still held on high regard for the inspiration it has provided to the development of democratic institutions and ideals. The creation of United States democracy was founded on the principles outlined in this historic document "that certain truths are self-evident, that people are created equal, that they are endowed with inalienable rights, that governments derive their power from the consent of the governed and that the purpose of government is to protect these rights." These …
Improving The Campus Sustainability Assessment Process, Andrew Nixon
Improving The Campus Sustainability Assessment Process, Andrew Nixon
Honors Theses
The human enterprise is rapidly overwhelming the Earth’s ecological systems and draining its natural resources. According to Vitousek et al., as much as one-half of the planet’s land surface has been transformed by human activity; more than half of the world’s available fresh water is used by humans; and a quarter of the planet’s bird species have been driven to extinction by human activity (Vitousek et al, 1997). These and many other negative trends pose catastrophic implications for the future of our species and for the planet’s other inhabitants.
