Differences In Convention: Serious Vs. Comic In Turn-Of-The-Century British Literature (1885-1915), Christopher Michael Mossing Jan 2005

Differences In Convention: Serious Vs. Comic In Turn-Of-The-Century British Literature (1885-1915), Christopher Michael Mossing

Honors Theses

This thesis attempts to prove that the serious fiction of the late Victorian, the Edwardian, and early modernist eras of British literature differs fundamentally from the comic fiction of the same region and period in the way that it deals with chance. In serious works, authors do not allow acts of chance to dictate the responses of their characters, while the authors of comic works seem to be under no such restriction. To prove that this difference in convention exists, the thesis examines works from a handful of representative authors. For the serious, the thesis examines Thomas Hardy’s Tess of …

Picric Acid Degradation In Sterilized Sediments From The Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant, Minden, Louisiana, Stephanie Kimberly Rice Jan 2005

Picric Acid Degradation In Sterilized Sediments From The Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant, Minden, Louisiana, Stephanie Kimberly Rice

Honors Theses

Picric acid is an explosive historically produced and disposed of at the Louisiana Army Ammunitions Plant (LAAP). The potential for natural degradation was investigated in two studies by creating picric acid slurries with four LAAP samples of sediment of variable composition. While the first study combined the sediment with picric acid without alteration to the sediment, the second study sterilized the sediment before the slurries were created. The purpose of the soil sterilization was to quantify the role of microbes in the degradation process. In the first study, picric acid concentrations decreased 10 to 18% the first day, attributed to …

Correlates Of Obesity And The Metabolic Syndrome In African-American Adolescents, Tasheitha Vontre Butler

Honors Theses

As the prevalence of overweight and obesity amongst Americans increases, there is an increased risk in individuals for the development of the “metabolic syndrome.” The “metabolic syndrome,” which is characterized by abdominal obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance, puts those diagnosed with it at an increased risk for certain chronic illnesses, including Type II diabetes and coronary heart disease, research investigates the possible correlates between obesity and the metabolic syndrome in a group of 10-16 year-old African-American participants in the University of Mississippi’s National Youth Sports Program (NYSP). The results show that there are indeed correlates between obesity and the …

Analytical Tools For Studying Phosphorus And Nitrogen Lake Nutrient Dynamics And Their Application To The Field, Ivan Mihajlov Jan 2005

Analytical Tools For Studying Phosphorus And Nitrogen Lake Nutrient Dynamics And Their Application To The Field, Ivan Mihajlov

Honors Theses

In order to evaluate the causes and conditions that lead to cyanobacteria blooms in northern temperate lakes, studies of nutrients such as total phosphorus, total nitrogen, phosphate, and nitrate are necessary. Sensitive, environmentally friendly and cost-effective techniques were developed to detect ppb-level nitrates and phosphates in the lake water. Phosphate was analyzed by luminol chemiluminescence, while the quantification of nitrate was performed by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using indirect UV detection, with a background electrolyte consisting of pyromellitic acid, hexamethonium hydroxide and triethanolamine. Sample injection methods for the CE were optimized for the analysis in Belgrade Lakes, Maine. Vertical profiles of …

The Impact Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002 On The Auditing Profession, Samantha Marie Rayburn

Honors Theses

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 was passed in order to restore investor confidence to the market after a series of accounting fiascos. Congress included in this act legislation creating the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to monitor audits conducted on publicly traded companies and made many provisions concerning auditor independence. However, the most controversial part of the legislation was Section 404 which requires an audit of internal controls. The intent of this study was to determine how Sarbanes-Oxley will impact the auditing profession. This was determined through an intense review of the most current articles available on the subject. It …

Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright

Honors Theses

This purpose of this study was to quantify both behavioral and biological markers of stress (i.e. distress vocalizations, plasma corticosterone) in the chick stress-separation paradigm. In this study, chicks were isolated from companions for either 5,10,15,20,40, or 60 minutes and distress vocalizations were recorded. In addition, one group was tested in the presence of social companions for 60 minutes. Blood was collected from half of the subjects immediately following the testing period and was also collected in a no-test group to establish plasma corticosterone basal levels. Isolation produced a significant elevation in distress vocalizations and corticosterone. The pattern of distress …

Common Injuries Of Musicians, Lynette Lukomski Dec 2004

Common Injuries Of Musicians, Lynette Lukomski

Honors Theses

Musicians face many challenges throughout their careers; dealing with an injury should not be one of them. Unfortunately, studies show that up to seventy-five percent of musicians suffer playing-related injuries. These injuries can retard musical growth, can take time out of practices and performances, and may cost a musician his/her job. Fortunately, many non-invasive treatments can be used if injuries are diagnosed quickly, and prevention techniques are available to prevent an injury from ever occurring. Factors such as age and genetics (physical and mental characteristics inherited from parents) should be considered as well when a musician decides his/her practice schedule. …

The Potential Effects Of The Trans-Atlantic Common Aviation Area On Shannon Airport, Ireland, Daniel James Centilli Dec 2004

The Potential Effects Of The Trans-Atlantic Common Aviation Area On Shannon Airport, Ireland, Daniel James Centilli

Honors Theses

The Trans-Atlantic Aviation Area is a proposed liberalization of the air services agreements known as bilateral agreements between the United States of America and the member states of the European Union. The new agreement would replace the restrictive bilateral and Open Skies bilateral agreements between the United States and the EU with a single comprehensive agreement. The emergence of true open skies between the US and EU creates many economic opportunities and some economic threats. One such threat is the situation faced by the Shannon Airport, Ireland. Under the current US/Ireland bilateral, Shannon's existence is protected by requiring US carriers …

Power, Positionality, And Conceptions Of Stewardship And Ownership In The Cleanup Of Nomans Land Island, Massachusetts, Michael Greenberg May 2004

Power, Positionality, And Conceptions Of Stewardship And Ownership In The Cleanup Of Nomans Land Island, Massachusetts, Michael Greenberg

Honors Theses

One of the most pressing issues facing Indigenous groups today, especially in the intimate New Engl'and communilties of the northeastern United States, is their ongoing struggle to reclaim and preserve sovereignty on land they once cultivated as stewards but now live on under the encroachment of larger States. In recent years, the United States government has sought to deal with issues of Native American sovereignty through granting federal recognition to tribes, thus creating a relationship of "nation-to-nation status" between a tribal government and the national government. This relationship generates a complex power structure on global, national, regional, and tribal levels, …

College Students' Attitudes About Feminine And Masculine Sexuality, Kathryn Stonecipher May 2004

College Students' Attitudes About Feminine And Masculine Sexuality, Kathryn Stonecipher

Honors Theses

Sexuality is a vital part of most people's lives. Unfortunately, most people feel as though there are very different standards for what is sexually acceptable for men and what is sexually acceptable for women. There is some evidence for this, but it is a possibility that this double standard is not how college students feel today about sexuality. The study that was conducted found that both men and women thought that women's sexuality was actually more acceptable than men's sexuality. The 75 students surveyed held less conservative attitudes about what is sexually acceptable for women than for men.

Honors Theses

Polychlorinated biphenyls are ubiquitous, persistent environmental contaminants that cause a variety of adverse health effects wildlife and humans. PCBs are the major contaminant in the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site, in which the Environmental Institute is funded to study. Projects at the Environmental Institute are focused on developing molecular biotechnology tools that will improve environmental risk assessment. Previous acute studies involved the exposure of developing tadpoles, Xenopus laevis to PCBs through aquarium water in order to measure gene expression. Nerve growth factor (NGF) gene expression showed changes in these previous studies. NGF is a neurotrophic factor that regulates the growth and …

Technology And The 'Self', Ryan Rinn Apr 2004

Technology And The 'Self', Ryan Rinn

Honors Theses

This project examines the relationship between technology and the self. Based largely on Gergen's (1991, 2000) descriptions of technological immersion and the saturated self, I discuss the ways that modem technologies have come to be a part of self-construction. Survey and focus group data from 63 university students are used to examine types of technological use, talk about technological experience, and self-construction. This paper describes the contradictory ways participants talk about technology, and defines nine themes of self emergence in participant discussion: 1) connection, 2) over-connection, 3) ease/laziness, 4) multitasking, 5) profile stalking, 6) loss of physical presence, 7) empowerment, …

Michel Foucault : Power/Knowledge And Epistemological Prescriptions, Martin A. Hewett Apr 2004

Michel Foucault : Power/Knowledge And Epistemological Prescriptions, Martin A. Hewett

Honors Theses

In an interview in 1977, seven years before his death, Michel Foucault made the following profound and controversial statement:

Truth is a thing of this world: it is produced only by virtue of multiple forms of constraint.

Within this sentence lies perhaps his most contested assertion: that knowledge is not some property of statements or beliefs that exist separately from relations of power within societies and discourses, but is constituted by and constitutive of them. Foucault's genealogies of sexuality and punishment are the most notable means by which he develops this claim, and their own potent explanatory powers leave us …
