Role Of Speech-Language Pathologists In Aphasia Therapy And Rehabilitation As Reported By Practicing Speech-Language Pathologists, Meredith Wooley

Honors Theses

This thesis examined the roles of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) within aphasia therapy and rehabilitation. Research compiled in the literature review explained the disorder of aphasia, and the roles of SLPs when working with people who have aphaisa, as outlined in the ASHA policy document Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in The Identification, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Individuals with Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Position Statement (2005b). This study investigated ASHA-certified, masters-level SLPs' preparedness to work with aphasia patients, as well as their familiarity of their roles and resonsibilities in aphasia therapy and rehabilitation, and their awareness of the possible forms of treatment for aphasia. …

Cardiovascular Protective Agents And Their Biochemical Role In Endothelial Cell Senescence, Nicholas Boullard Jan 2014

Cardiovascular Protective Agents And Their Biochemical Role In Endothelial Cell Senescence, Nicholas Boullard

Honors Theses

Cellular senescence is a slow, biological process of aging that involves the accumulation of various changes to the internal environment of a cell, most notably the buildup of acidic B-galactosidase. These changes, both structural and molecular in nature, disable metabolism of many cellular processes and eventually induce apoptosis. As cells divide, the ends of chromosomes, telomeres, slowly shorten. Once telomere shortening reaches critical levels, those chromosomes may no longer replicate properly, leading to cellular process complication and apoptosis. Telomerase is a reverse transcriptase that adds nucleotides to telomeres, elongating them and successfully delaying endothelial cell senescence. Endothelial cells serve an …

Payday Lending In America: Profitability And Regulation In The Payday Lending Market, Orion Wilcox Jan 2014

Payday Lending In America: Profitability And Regulation In The Payday Lending Market, Orion Wilcox

Honors Theses

Payday lending is a highly contentious form of credit. Consumer advocates often argue for strict regulation or complete banning of the industry based on the idea that payday lending rates are usurious. Providers of payday loans argue that their product offers access to credit that would not be available otherwise. In order to reconcile this debate, I analyze financial data on the largest payday lender in the country Advance America. Furthermore, I examine the 2008 Arkansas payday lending law to analyze the impact of the ban on bounced check fees, overdraft charges, and Non-Sufficient Funds charges at state chartered Arkansas …

How The Case United States V. Windsor Paved The Way For Same-Sex Marriage Legalization In The United States, Olivia C. Watkins

Honors Theses

This thesis looks at how the United States Supreme Court came to decide upon the issue of same-sex marriage. Starting in the lower courts and moving to the Supreme Court in 2013 and how the decision handed down by the court changed the law of the land. As well as how this decision has allowed for future changes in the law. Furthermore, how the new land has led individual states to overturn laws restricting marriage equality and how the Fourteenth Amendment can be used as a vehicle to legalize same-sex marriage across the states using the Courts decisions in United …

Chile Se Moviliza: Protest Movements And Inequality In Post-Dictatorship Chile, Shruti Jaishankar Jan 2014

Chile Se Moviliza: Protest Movements And Inequality In Post-Dictatorship Chile, Shruti Jaishankar

Honors Theses

On March 11, 1990, Augusto Pinochet, one of Latin America's most infamous dictators, left office after Chileans ordered him to step down in a nationwide plebiscite. Since Pinochet harshly punished any and all dissenters, protests re-emerged in Chile as a popular form of political action. In this thesis, I examine the relationship between economic and political inequality and the frequency of protests and peaceful demonstrations in the country. I examine the theory behind why people protest, and later examine the history of individual protest movements (such as the Chilean Education Movement). Lastly, I run a regression to evaluate the relationship …

Evaluation Of Microbial Diversity Present In Herbal Supplements As Revealed By Pcr-Based 16s Sequence Analysis, Stephen Stone Jan 2014

Evaluation Of Microbial Diversity Present In Herbal Supplements As Revealed By Pcr-Based 16s Sequence Analysis, Stephen Stone

Honors Theses

Over the last few decades people have become more aware of their general wellness and have turned towards alternative measures to ensure good health. One of these alternative measures, the herbal supplement market, has risen significantly in recent years, even though there is no conclusive research that points to the effectiveness of herbal supplements. Also, because of sparse regulation from the FDA, there are many questions related to the efficacy, composition, processing methods, and, consequently, safety of these supplements. The aim of this study was to determine the microbial composition of herbal supplements in an attempt to identify potential targets …

Valuation And Financial Statement Analysis For Activision-Blizzard, Inc., Stephen Wittmann Jan 2014

Valuation And Financial Statement Analysis For Activision-Blizzard, Inc., Stephen Wittmann

Honors Theses

Activision-Blizzard (ATVI), a market-leading publisher and developer in the videogame industry, represents a fascinating case study of a player in a relatively new industry as it struggles to find a permanent place among entrenched entertainment staples such as music, television, and movies. The company in its present form is the product of a 2008 merger between Activision Inc. and Vivendi Games, thus creating a massive publisher with rights to several of the industry's most popular franchises, including World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and Call of Duty. This industry domination has not gone unnoticed, and as of March 2013, ATVI's share price …

Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Aurora Floyd Revisited: An Experiment In Neovictorianism, Vivian Walker Lang

Honors Theses

My thesis is a combination of analysis and creativity. It is an exploration in the literary genre Neovictorianism, and specifically it explores a two-year period in the life of Aurora Floyd. Aurora Floyd is the protagonist of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's novel, Aurora Floyd. While many of the major themes, characters, and literary elements stem from Braddon's work, the following pages are my original work and have accumulated over the past year and a half of my time as an honors student.

Performance Enhancing Drugs In America's Pastime, William A. Hodges Jan 2014

Performance Enhancing Drugs In America's Pastime, William A. Hodges

Honors Theses

Over the last couple of decades, steroids use has been a part of baseball. The goal of steroid users is to gain a physical advantage over other players in the league by taking these drugs. The drugs have a variety of different effects to benefit baseball players. Along with the benefits, steroids have many health risks. The history of steroids in baseball, although relatively recent, is still vast and is still being written. The MLB has worked hard to determine the proper action to deal with steroids. The first part of the thesis is to look into what steroids are …

Bolivian Public Health Care: Interculturation For Indigenous Rights, Kendra Leigh Wright Jan 2014

Bolivian Public Health Care: Interculturation For Indigenous Rights, Kendra Leigh Wright

Honors Theses

This thesis is concerned with Bolivian public health care, specifically how interculturation plays a part in bringing indigenous rights and representation. By examining indigenous traditional healing and Western medicine, this thesis attempts to answer the question of: is the role of pluralizing medical practices a mechanism that successfully gives more power toward the representation and inclusion of indigenous rights in Bolivia? If so, how exactly has interculturation taken place? This thesis hypothesizes that through projects of cultural sensitivity and the respecting of Aymara and Quechua languages, rituals, and traditions, indigenous representation is enhanced in the Bolivian public health care field, …

Analysis Of Body Type Preferences Among Young Adults, Khyati Maheshkumar Ganatra Jan 2014

Analysis Of Body Type Preferences Among Young Adults, Khyati Maheshkumar Ganatra

Honors Theses

Based on a study conducted by Devendra Singh in 1993, it is believed that males prefer females with a lower waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7, as compared to higher ones. This may be due to the evolutionary advantage of these females being more fertile and able to reproduce. However, social media has been suggesting that thinner females are more attractive. One way society measures thinness is by a characteristic known as the 'thigh-gap' that many females strive to obtain. This study was conducted to discover whether or not a difference exists between males and females regarding their preference of the thigh-gap …

Prepulse Inhibition Of The Acoustic Startle Reflex: Comparing Low And High Trait Anxious Individuals, Krista Sturm Jan 2014

Prepulse Inhibition Of The Acoustic Startle Reflex: Comparing Low And High Trait Anxious Individuals, Krista Sturm

Honors Theses

This investigation examined whether prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex was impaired among individuals with high trait anxiety compared to controls. PPI has traditionally been theorized to be a psychophysiological index of information processing and sensorimotor gating, and is now being used to help identify various psychological disorders. Although results of existing research on reduced PPI across the anxiety spectrum are equivocal, previous findings indicate that highly anxious (HA) participants exhibit significantly reduced PPI at lead intervals of 60 ms relative to low anxious (LA) controls. This study paired a 70 dB (A) white noise prepulse stimulus with a …

The Effects Of Prenatal Education And Hospital Intervention On Breastfeeding Initiation, Lauren Camp

Honors Theses

Breastfeeding is considered an important health practice for mothers and babies. However, Mississippi has the lowest breastfeeding rate of any state in the nation. Because of the numerous potential benefits of breastfeeding, the overall health of Mississippians could benefit from improved breastfeeding outcomes. Using 2010 data retrieved by the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey, which is administered through the Mississippi State Department of Health (MDH) in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this study explores the factors that influence the breastfeeding decisions of mothers in Mississippi. In the PRAMS survey, women were asked whether …

The Effects Of Population Disbursement, Percentage Of Medicare Beneficiaries, And Per Capita Income On Medicare Fee Schedule Prices, Ann Marie Mercier Jan 2014

The Effects Of Population Disbursement, Percentage Of Medicare Beneficiaries, And Per Capita Income On Medicare Fee Schedule Prices, Ann Marie Mercier

Honors Theses

The thesis is an overview of the existing pay disparity in the fee-for-service billing amounts for professional medical services provided by physicians to Medicare patients in the United States. Will improvements in the per capita income, percentage of Medicare participants, or change in the population disbursement result in higher Medicare fee-for-service billing amounts for healthcare providers? Mississippi has one of the fewest primary care physicians per capita rates than any other state. One reason may be the Medicare fee-for-service prices paid to physicians. This paper will show Mississippi Medicare fee-for-service fee schedule prices for a sample of HCPCS codes compared …

Honors Theses

Even with the vast amount of research regarding mating vocalizations and their adaptive functions, the copulation call of female wild turkeys, Meleagris gallopavo, has yet to be described. The purpose of this study was to describe this novel call, referred to as karoo and to test three hypotheses for its function. Previously collected data in the form of video tapes and data sheets provided the basis of this study. Dr. Richard Buchholz conducted experimental trials in 2008 and 2009. Male behavioral data was recorded on the videos. The videos and the data sheets were used to collect female behavioral data. …

The Acute Influence Of Occupational Footwear On Balance, Caroline Borland Jan 2014

The Acute Influence Of Occupational Footwear On Balance, Caroline Borland

Honors Theses

There is a great number of potential risks for falls and injuries because of problems in the workplace. In 2010, there were almost 3.1 million nonfatal and 646 fatal illnesses and injuries disclosed in the workplace (BLS, 2010). Fatal and nonfatal occupational injuries have decreased in the recent years but there is still much room to improve. Inappropriate footwear has been attributed to 45% of all falls (Menant et al. 2008). Past studies have shown that industrial footwear can have a detrimental effect on balance (Menant et al. 2008, Chander, Garner & Wade 2013). Occupational footwear have not been designed …

In Another Day: The Historical And Cultural Relevance Of Gone With The Wind, Cody Rentz Jan 2014

In Another Day: The Historical And Cultural Relevance Of Gone With The Wind, Cody Rentz

Honors Theses

Although it was a massive success in its time and won a Pulitzer Prize, critics today tend to discard Gone with the Wind as a piece of low-quality, racist, historically inaccurate literature. However, the novel, through no intent of its author, parallels the Great Depression in many ways, a fact that likely contributed to its popularity. As such, the novel can be a useful tool in studying the culture of the 1930s. To study the cultural connections, I began by reading the novel, watching the film, and speculating as to the connections to Depression-era culture. I then researched the author, …

Festivals And Revelry: A Study Of Identity In The Cantons Of Modern Switzerland, Courtney Gayle Taylor Jan 2014

Festivals And Revelry: A Study Of Identity In The Cantons Of Modern Switzerland, Courtney Gayle Taylor

Honors Theses

The following paper seeks to address the question of whether or not Fribourg and the other Swiss cantons are able to maintain a cantonal identity in the increasingly globalized political system and what methods are used for this identity preservation. This reproduction of identity in the cantonal system (also referred to as cultural reproduction) will be the focus of my thesis. After looking at the literature on identity formation, familiarizing myself with the history of Switzerland, the cantonal system, and the canton of Fribourg, and finally collecting and analyzing data on identity formation practices in the guise of festivals, I …

The Cooling Effect Of Cryotherapy On Power And Accuracy In The Pitching Arms Of Baseball Players, David Kimble Wilbanks Jan 2014

The Cooling Effect Of Cryotherapy On Power And Accuracy In The Pitching Arms Of Baseball Players, David Kimble Wilbanks

Honors Theses

As the human body does work, energy is released in the form of heat. The ability to perform the same action repeatedly and at the same intensity requires energy to be maintained. By preserving energy in sports, a reduction of injuries and an increase in performance duration would most likely be observed. More specifically in sports, for 200 years of baseball history, the pitcher has attempted to keep their arm warm during resting intervals of a game, in belief this would help sustain their level of performance. This study attempted to overturn this view. I hypothesized that by cooling their …

Can We Institute Medical Trust? An Exploratory Case Study Of Patient-Staff Relations At A Community Health Center In The Mississippi Delta, Emma L. Willoughby Jan 2014

Can We Institute Medical Trust? An Exploratory Case Study Of Patient-Staff Relations At A Community Health Center In The Mississippi Delta, Emma L. Willoughby

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to use the concept of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model and the case of the community health center (CHC) to explore social interaction and trust between patients and medical providers. While the PCMH model is being championed as revolutionizing and improving healthcare delivery, little evidence has yet to support the formation of basic social and health mechanisms, such as trust, that would result in positive health outcomes. The model's guidelines focus more on healthcare organization and information technology than developing interpersonal relationships and adapting services to meet the specific needs of diverse populations. …
