A Study Of The Photoacoustic Effect In Ethylene Gas, Jay Nguyen
A Study Of The Photoacoustic Effect In Ethylene Gas, Jay Nguyen
Honors Theses
Ethylene, C2H4, is a plant hormone produced and released naturally by plants and soil microorganisms. This colorless, flammable gas has a slightly sweet odor usually only recognized by those who have handled ethylene before. In situ analyses of this gas and many other potentially harmful gases outside of the laboratory are often difficult to perform due to the lack of a portable yet reliable unit capable of precisely and accurately detecting and measuring the concentrations of these gases at trace gas concentrations of a few parts per billion. In this research project, photoacoustic spectroscopy was used to detect and measure …
The Impact Social Withdrawal In Depression Has On Social Functioning, Clayton H. Allred
The Impact Social Withdrawal In Depression Has On Social Functioning, Clayton H. Allred
Honors Theses
Depression is a major health concern worldwide, particularly through its impact on individuals' level of functioning. However, noticeably absent from the study of depression and social functioning is an examination of social withdrawal. This paper examines if social withdrawal predicts social functioning above and beyond symptoms of depression and anhedonia. We developed the Social Withdrawal Scale (SWS) and tested it, along with other measures of depression and social functioning, using participants from Amazon MTurk. The results of the study indicated that the SWS functioned best as a single factor measure. The SWS did in fact predict additional variability in social …
Reducing Social Demands In Child Eyewitness Memory Using Robot Interviewers, A. Zachary Buchanan
Reducing Social Demands In Child Eyewitness Memory Using Robot Interviewers, A. Zachary Buchanan
Honors Theses
A recent study showed that children's memory for a witnessed event was not impaired when misleading post-event information was presented by a robot interviewer. However, their memory was impaired when the misleading information was presented by a human interviewer, despite the implementation of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's Investigative Interview Protocol (NICHD). The NICHD is specifically designed to elicit veridical information from child eyewitnesses, in both human and robot conditions. The proposed explanation for these memory findings is that the social demands inherent in human interviewers were not present in robot interviewers. The current study sought …
The Internal Revenue Code: A Burden For Taxpayers Or An Instrument For Social Change?, Heather N. Murray
The Internal Revenue Code: A Burden For Taxpayers Or An Instrument For Social Change?, Heather N. Murray
Honors Theses
Social engineering in the tax code has been evident from the beginning of the U.S. tax history. Today, it is as much as ever a part of the fabric of the tax codification, but there is very little research that investigates 1) how social engineering plays a role in the creation of new tax law, and 2) whether tax law is effective in altering taxpayer behavior. This paper streamlines the history of social engineering in the most popular revenue-reducing measures and analyzes how they've affected the U.S. taxpayer, with notes on future policy implications.
Working With Mental Illness And The Preparation Of Social Workers, Destini Triplett
Working With Mental Illness And The Preparation Of Social Workers, Destini Triplett
Honors Theses
Social workers are often the front line responders for individuals with mental illness. However, there has been limited research related to how social workers are prepared, what the best practices are, and what suggestions have been made to improve preparation in this kind of setting. This research study included a cross-sectional mixed methods study examining the knowledge and preparation of social work professionals as well as recommendations for improving education. The results indicated that social work educators and professionals are competent in their knowledge of mental health. The qualitative responses indicated three overarching themes: (1) confidence in abilities but acknowledgement …
Exploring The Role Of Local Adaptation In The Response Of Maianthemum Canadense To Climate Warming, Spenser J. Ryan
Exploring The Role Of Local Adaptation In The Response Of Maianthemum Canadense To Climate Warming, Spenser J. Ryan
Honors Theses
By the year 2100, it is projected that average global temperatures will increase by ~4C. Shifts in species distributions have been evidenced as a common response to climate warming across taxonomic groups with migration to higher latitudes and elevations in response to warming being common. Species responses to climate warming can be influenced by the local adaptations of their populations. I hypothesized that populations of M. canadense from warmer locations would respond negatively to warming, while populations from cooler sites would exhibit neutral or positive responses to warming. Maianthemum canadense is a species that is associated with cool, moist microsites …
Exploring The Moderating Effects Of Drinking Context On The Relationship Between Harmful Drinking And Risky Sexual Behaviors Among College Females, Lauren A. Gardner
Exploring The Moderating Effects Of Drinking Context On The Relationship Between Harmful Drinking And Risky Sexual Behaviors Among College Females, Lauren A. Gardner
Honors Theses
Females are engaging in harmful amounts of drinking at higher rates than ever before. Because these rates are increasing, studying harmful drinking in the college female population is imperative. Previous studies have noted that an increase in harmful drinking correlates positively with an increase in risky sexual behavior. Although these correlations are evident, no previous study has looked at drinking context as a moderator between these two variables. The current study examined the degree to which drinking context moderates the relationship between harmful drinking and risky sexual behavior in college females. This study consisted of 387 female college students ages …
The Msaabcr Operon Mutant Staphylococcus Aureus Is Deficient In Persister Cells, Aaliyah D. Cole
The Msaabcr Operon Mutant Staphylococcus Aureus Is Deficient In Persister Cells, Aaliyah D. Cole
Honors Theses
Persister cells comprise a phenotypic variant that shows extreme antibiotic tolerance resulting in chronic infections. While this phenomenon has posed a great threat in public health, mechanism underlying their formation in Staphylococcus aureus remains largely unknown. Increasing evidence of the presence of persister cells in recalcitrant infections underscores the great urgency to unravel the mechanism by which these cells are developed. The Elasri Research group characterized msaABCR operon that plays roles in regulation of virulence, biofilm development and antibiotic resistance. It was hypothesized that the operon also plays a role in persister cell formation. In this study, the persister cell …
Delta Hands For Hope: A Force For Reconciliation And Sustainable Development In The Delta?, Mary D. Travis
Delta Hands For Hope: A Force For Reconciliation And Sustainable Development In The Delta?, Mary D. Travis
Honors Theses
This case study focuses on the question of whether Delta Hands for Hope, a distinctive, possibly unique faith-based organization, is able to facilitate racial reconciliation and sustainable community development in the Delta community of Shaw. If so, is it a potential model for sustainable development for other communities of the Delta and beyond? This thesis builds on existing literature about sustainable development and development in the Mississippi Delta. The original, empirical research is based on Grounded Theory methodology, a participant/observer perspective, and data gathered through in-depth, open-ended interviews. This research work suggests that racial division is pervasive in every area …
I Love My Team! Factors Leading To Relationship Formation With A Sports Team, Carly L. Odom
I Love My Team! Factors Leading To Relationship Formation With A Sports Team, Carly L. Odom
Honors Theses
The sports industry is highly profitable, with a large and diverse fan base. Many people claim to be loyal to different teams, but what moves a more ‘casual fan’ to the team ‘fanatic’ status? Prior research in sports marketing focuses on elements such as geography and family history, while general marketing research considers the impact of behavioral and emotional loyalty (Chaudhuri and Holbrook, 2001). This focus on strict loyalty can, however, be limiting. Examining the factors within the larger relationship context gives us more insight into extreme fans (Pimentel & Reynolds, 2004), as well as the more casual fan. Prior …

A Scholarly Fictional Narrative Portraying The Stigma That Surrounds Mental Illness And Its Place In Literature, Adrianna Robinson
A Scholarly Fictional Narrative Portraying The Stigma That Surrounds Mental Illness And Its Place In Literature, Adrianna Robinson
Honors Theses
The purpose of this scholarly fictional narrative is meant to reveal the struggles that individuals with mental illness go through, not only in their personal lives, but also with their place in society. I lay out research around the stigma that surrounds mental illness first, defining both public and self-stigma in relation to mental illness. I also briefly mention Girl, Interrupted and “The Yellow Wallpaper,” to show how authors have addressed the stigma that surrounds mental illness in literature in the past. The research is an important part of understanding why I write the fictional narrative the way I do, …
Extraction Studies Of Toxic Multiply Charged Oxoanions From Aqueous Media Using Nanojars, Hartman Christian
Extraction Studies Of Toxic Multiply Charged Oxoanions From Aqueous Media Using Nanojars, Hartman Christian
Honors Theses
In this paper, the potential of nanojars as extracting agents of chromate and arsenate from aqueous media into a non-polar organic medium is investigated. Nanojars are a class of compounds that consist of multiple [cis-CuII(μ-OH)(μ-pz)]n cyclic polymerization isomers (n = 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14; pz = pyrazolato anion) that form from self-assembly reactions around a multiply-charged oxoanion core with capping counterions to render an overall neutral complex. This incarcerates the anion, preventing it from escaping the complex without the use of any covalent bonding, making it a potentially highly effective and unique extracting agent. We have concluded that …
Camping For Children With Cerebral Palsy, Emily Scannell
Camping For Children With Cerebral Palsy, Emily Scannell
Honors Theses
Children with cerebral palsy and their families may have needs that make camping difficult or seemingly inaccessible. Through an explanation of the research backing the benefits of camping, this paper makes it clear that camping is a worthwhile activity that can be optimized through modifications. Understanding cerebral palsy and the steps of basic camping activities, it is possible to create modifications to increase family and child wellness while camping. Through a hypothetical case study, a specific look can be had at the ways to prepare for an optimal camping experience- from adapted equipment, to modified preparatory strategies. Through a review …
Health Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet, Jenna Jackson
Health Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet, Jenna Jackson
Honors Theses
While the rise and spread of Western culture has created remarkable advances in science, healthcare, and technology, it has also brought about a variety of chronic diseases that never once existed. Much of these ailments can be attributed to the typical Western diet, which places heavy emphasis on meats, dairy, and refined grains, contrasting the typical Eastern or Oriental diet which primarily focuses on fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains. This dietary transition has resulted in increased glycemic load, increased levels of unhealthy fats and cholesterol, decreased micronutrient and fiber levels, and skewed acid-base and sodium-potassium ratios. All of these …
Precarious Positions Of Femininity In Contemporary Literature: A College Course Creation, Ireland Atkinson
Precarious Positions Of Femininity In Contemporary Literature: A College Course Creation, Ireland Atkinson
Honors Theses
In an effort to understand college instruction, I created a collegiate literature course and its logistical materials. This process manifested in the creation of a syllabus, schedules, assignments, and a teaching philosophy statement. With the title “Precarious Positions of Femininity in Contemporary Literature,” the course is in an interdisciplinary format that explores gender and women’s studies with literary scholarship as its medium. All of the texts are not only written by female authors, but also address women’s issues and the precarious positions their femininity puts them in. With a focus on the intersectionality and the diversity of the female experience, …

The Technological Revolution And Data Science, Leslie Walcott
The Technological Revolution And Data Science, Leslie Walcott
Honors Theses
What was once only depicted in science fiction is now a reality: computers are taking jobs from humans. As technology improves, automation is transforming the workplace. They say a “fourth industrial revolution” is inevitable within the next ten years. In the industrial revolution, the jobs lost were unskilled laborers, such as coal miners, textiles manufacturers, or cotton workers. There was no argument for whether or not a machine could do the jobs more efficiently--it was fact. The term technological unemployment means the loss of jobs caused by technological change. The headline, “Factory workers replaced by automation,” is not particularly startling …

Millennial Attraction To Southwest Michigan – Retaining And Attracting Millennial Talent To Our Region’S Companies, Robert Nyhuis
Honors Theses
Businesses in our region and in our country today have a unique opportunity being presented to them. Four generations of employees are walking through the doors of our companies each day. To expect that each generation can be catered to the same would be ignorant for a CEO or manager to believe. It’s common knowledge that this new generation entering the workforce, the millennials, are unlike any other generation to come before in regards to their workplace necessities and demands. Technology, diversity, and flexibility just scratch the surface when it comes to what the millennial generation is looking for when …
Potassium Chloride As A Salt Substitute In Bread, Andrea Noud
Potassium Chloride As A Salt Substitute In Bread, Andrea Noud
Honors Theses
Bread is a staple product in the diet of most consumers in America. It is also one of the ”Salty Six”; the top six processed foods containing the most sodium chloride (NaCl) or table salt. Dietary reference intake (DRI) guidelines are established by The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine. Per these values, children ages 9-13 should consume no more than 2.2 g/day of sodium, and men and women ages 14-70 and older should consume no more than 2.3 g/day.Yet the average intake of sodium in America is much higher than the DRI: 3.4 g/day. One potential …

Throughout history, the human species has been able to out-think most major problems facing us, we are amazing animals after all. Humans are the only species proved to have language, consciousness, and culture — all of which came over time with our outstandingly intelligent and adaptable brains. We’ve developed systems to harness the power of earth (minerals), air (wind energy), fire (combustion), and water (irrigation and also hydro energy); and we’ve also invented tools, workarounds, and cycles to overcome biological, physical, and other myriad roadblocks for us. Even thousands and thousands of years ago human beings were manipulating and disturbing …

The purpose of this thesis is to determine the relationship between veterans and their service dogs and the emotional and physical support provided. A review of the literature, combined with systematic interviews of combat veterans led to an initial understanding of the relationship between a veteran and a service dog and the benefits and risks associated with this special connection.
Women Leaders In Marketing: Breaking Through The Glass Ceiling, Hallie Green
Women Leaders In Marketing: Breaking Through The Glass Ceiling, Hallie Green
Honors Theses
Introduction: During my internships I was able to work with and meet women leaders in marketing. Through our discussions I learned that gender roles are still prevalent in large companies today. Many of the women I worked with talked about struggles women face in their career that men do not. There were strong emotions that women did not get equal treatment for their contributions to the company. I was surprised by these statements, especially from seemingly successful women. This thesis will be an exploration of the difficulties professional female marketers face, and the ways women that are starting their career …
