An Analysis Of Accounting Principles Through Case Studies, Marisa Panasci
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze various accounting principles through an evaluation of fictional and non-fictional case studies that helps to create an understanding of accounting philosophies in real-world situations. In contrast to the more traditional research approach to a thesis, I was given 10 cases to dissect specific questions regarding economics, ethics, accounting methodologies, personal experiences and more. Dr. Dickinson led this course to allow time for presentations with accounting professionals in tandem with complex questions about films, readings, and cases that challenged us to think outside the box. We also participated in accounting case competitions to …

Determination Of Metals In Whey And Vegan Protein Supplements Using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, Megan Lofaso
Honors Theses
Driven by a demand for health and wellness products worldwide, the dietary supplement industry continues to expand with an economic impact >$100 billion in the USA alone. However, the industry is plagued by a lack of regulation and incidents of contamination, including with toxic heavy metals that can put consumers at potential risk. In this study, eight trace elements (Cd, Pb, Fe, Co, Mn, V, Cu, and Cr), including heavy metals (Cd and Pb), were determined in whey and vegan protein powder by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted digestion using nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Samples were …

The Blue State: Unrwa's Transition From Relief To Development In Providing Education To Palestinian Refugees In Jordan, Alana Mitias
Honors Theses
Often referred to as the “Blue State”–due in part to its association with the United Nations’ trademark blue branding–the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has evolved since its creation in 1949 to become both a symbol of the Palestinian cause and an inimitable public service provider across its five areas of operation, especially in regards to education. In the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan alone, the UNRWA education program educates more than 120,000 students in 169 schools with results comparable with, if not often superior to, Jordanian public schools.
The UNRWA regime …

Honors Theses
The Iran Hostage Crisis, from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981, was a defining moment in American foreign policy and US – Iranian relations. The news media – local and national newspapers and television – was saturated with coverage of the situation in Tehran and the subsequent US reaction. Americans watched the news over the 444 days, feeling sympathy and forging a collective national bond with the hostages; the international conflict was deeply personal for many Americans. The media played a central role in the establishment of the narrative of the hostage crisis, developing specific roles and personas of …

Emotion Regulation Among Adults With Asthma: Links With Short-Acting Inhaler Medication Overuse And Utilization Of Acute Medical Care, Victoria A. Green
Honors Theses
Effective control of asthma symptoms requires daily self-management activities, including use of short-acting or “rescue” inhaled medications. Overuse of short-acting inhaled medications, such as albuterol, can have negative side-effects, including respiratory infections and worse asthma symptom control. Existing research suggests that emotion plays an important role in airway inflammation and asthma symptom control. The objective of this study was to determine whether difficulties regulating emotion was associated with overuse of short-acting inhaled medications and acute medical care usage in adults with asthma. The sample included 401 adults with asthma recruited from an online panel of adults with chronic respiratory disease. …

Lc-Ms/Ms Method Development And Analysis Of Tricyclic Antidepressants In Human Plasma, Shahbaz Gul
Honors Theses
Depression has become one of the most prominent problems in society, disrupting both personal and social lives. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) were first developed in the 1950’s and became some of the leading anti-depressant medications on the market later that decade. Today, newer anti-depressants have risen to the forefront, being safer and having a lower side-effect probability. Nonetheless, TCAs continue to be prescribed for severe depression, especially in cases where the newer anti-depressants have failed. However, TCAs are still highly potent, the toxicity associated with these compounds cannot be ignored. They have considerable cardiovascular and neurological toxicity, and in the event …

Fortunately, many users are constantly collecting some primary health data through wearables that have become commonplace in users' homes. Tapping into this unused data could provide healthcare professionals with a better picture of patients' health remotely. In this thesis, I will determine whether this wearable data can be a viable addition to Tele-Health applications, providing additional …
Duality In Digital Discourse: The History And Future Of The American Public Forum, Nicholas Weaver
Duality In Digital Discourse: The History And Future Of The American Public Forum, Nicholas Weaver
Honors Theses
From the onset of the republic, the liberty to speak freely and debate openly has stood guard and helped preserve all other American rights. While this concept has endured, the means by which it exists in society has changed immensely. As the public forum has evolved to fit the modern needs of the citizenry, political discourse has become less a defense against tyranny and more a chaotic space of conflicting opinions.
In the United States, privately-owned social media companies have grown at an unprecedented rate, yet lawmakers have been slow to exercise any authority to regulate these corporations. For public …

Repurposing Antiplatelet Drugs To Treat Platelet Mediated Metastasis, Brianna Chambers
Repurposing Antiplatelet Drugs To Treat Platelet Mediated Metastasis, Brianna Chambers
Honors Theses
By applying cardiovascular drugs, which already have been proven effective and safe, to other diseases we can speed the drug discovery process, specifically to translate them into treatments for platelet-mediated metastasis. Each cardiovascular drug within antiplatelet drugs, targets one of the four following pathways: COX-1, thromboxane, P2Y12, or thrombin. There has been varying levels of success with treating adenocarcinomas like breast and colorectal cancer. Continued success in treatment could be the result of pharmacogenetics and further evaluation of dosage levels. By isolating mutation rates in various adenocarcinomas there is the possibility of a targeted treatment based on the mutated gene.
