Effects Of Gender And Sexual Orientation On Perceptions Of The Bereaved, John Dickinson
Effects Of Gender And Sexual Orientation On Perceptions Of The Bereaved, John Dickinson
Honors Theses
The loss of a spouse is different for everyone who experiences it. There is no universal pattern for bereavement, and there is a wide variation in what is considered normal or healthy grieving (Hooyman & Kramer, 2010). Researchers have found that spousal bereavement is associated with increased risk of mortality, decrements in physical health, and diverse psychological reactions; some experience ongoing, disabling levels of stress, some experience symptoms that gradually decrease over time, and many experience little to no interference (Bonanno et al. 2004; Stroebe et al., 2007). The loss of a spouse or romantic partner affects most individuals at …

The State Of Healthcare Policy Education In Nursing School Curricula: A Literature Review, Katelyn Gebelein
The State Of Healthcare Policy Education In Nursing School Curricula: A Literature Review, Katelyn Gebelein
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper was to conduct a literature review regarding the current state of health policy education in nursing school curricula. Additionally, the paper will outline what improvements are being implemented in nursing education. The database CINAHL was used to conduct this study. According to the literature, there are an inadequate number of nurses participating in health policy reform which can be linked back to a lack of health policy education while in nursing school. The literature suggests options such as experiential learning, group activities and reflections, enhancing faculty knowledge, suggesting new teaching strategies, and implementing new courses …
Educational And Experiential Factors Affecting Nursing Students’ Bias Towards Gerontology And Dementia Care, Hannah Holt
Educational And Experiential Factors Affecting Nursing Students’ Bias Towards Gerontology And Dementia Care, Hannah Holt
Honors Theses
According to the World Health Organization, ageism is defined as the stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination against people based on their age (WHO, 2019). Ageism can be found everywhere and has been normalized in modern day society. Ageism can result in older adults being overlooked for jobs and portrayed in a negative way in the media (WHO, 2019). Many researchers have explored the topic of ageism and the lack of quality in dementia care by nurses (Chaston, 2010), but there is a gap in existing literature related to the root cause. For example, (Chan, 2008) highlights areas of concern regarding dementia …

Pollinator Gardens And Their Significance, Emma Lee
Pollinator Gardens And Their Significance, Emma Lee
Honors Theses
Abstract description: Pollinator populations are declining, leading to a global issue. This is due to human interference through intense agricultural production, habitat fragmentation, and pesticide use. Pollinators, mostly insects, are important for the reproductive success of plants and also provide many other benefits to humans like helping produce the foods we commonly eat. To be able to survive, pollinators need to have proper shelter and nectar. One way to supplement these needs for pollinators is creating pollinator gardens. Pollinator gardens should include a mix of trees, shrubs, and flowers that have large nectar rewards and are species that are preferred …

Controversial Intelligence Gathering: Deciphering The Actions Of The U.S. Intelligence Community To The Public, Rachel E. Lehkamp
Honors Theses
Following the devastating attacks of 9/11, the U.S. Intelligence Community, or the IC, has made drastic changes within the United States in the name of national security. A major change the IC implemented was initiating constant electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens. This constant surveillance has instilled a growing divide between members of the public who do support government surveillance and those who do not. To assess this divide, an amateur survey was conducted on the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) campus that included participants of Homeland Security majors and students of other degree programs at the university. The purpose of this …
Shy Or Anxious? Examining The Efficacy Of School-Based Interventions For Childhood Social Anxiety, Samantha Neuhaus
Shy Or Anxious? Examining The Efficacy Of School-Based Interventions For Childhood Social Anxiety, Samantha Neuhaus
Honors Theses
Social anxiety disorder and shyness share many overlapping features, leading to debate over where they become distinctive from each other. The theory of a shyness and social anxiety continuum has been suggested, depicting shyness on one end and social anxiety disorder as the more severe and maladaptive opposite end. Considering additional factors such as comorbidity and cultural differences, school based interventions can be implemented as a preventative and treatment measure for social anxiety across the continuum. Multiple intervention methods are utilized across school based interventions, and of eleven interventions specifically analyzed, it was found that the interventions are most often …

The Influence Of Bottom Type And Water Column Stratification On Reef Fish Community Structure At Gray’S Reef National Marine Sanctuary, Bridget Campbell
The Influence Of Bottom Type And Water Column Stratification On Reef Fish Community Structure At Gray’S Reef National Marine Sanctuary, Bridget Campbell
Honors Theses
Understanding the physical and oceanographic differences across reef habitats can help researchers assess how those differences influence fish distribution and community structure, which leads to a better understanding of what a healthy reef system looks like. The traditional methods used to assess fish communities on temperate reefs are limited and often focus solely on either the reef structure or water column conditions alone. An assessment of both data sets yields a more complete understanding of the ecosystem as a whole. In this study, Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS) was surveyed both inside and outside a Marine Protected Area (MPA) …
Microglia Polarize In Response To Transactive Response Dna-Binding Protein-43 (Tdp-43) And Display Partial Recovery After Removal Of The Stimulus, Alicen Wilcox
Honors Theses
The proper response to protein signals is necessary for a healthy central nervous system (CNS), and protein dysregulation is a feature of neurodegenerative diseases. Transactive response DNA-binding protein-43 (TDP-43) is an intranuclear protein, but mislocalization is associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). TDP-43 is released into the extracellular space where it is sensed by microglia, the CNS-resident immune cells. Our data and the literature suggest that microglia respond to TDP-43 dysregulation by increasing CNS inflammation. The goal of this study was to determine the impact of TDP-43 on microglial function and the extent to which microglia recovery. To study the …

Increased Incidence Of Substance Use And Substance Use Disorders Among Mexicans That Have Migrated To The United States, Emily Hock
Honors Theses
The United States is becoming increasingly older and more racially and ethnically diverse, with Mexican Americans adults aged 65 and over becoming the frontrunners in population growth. Substance use disorders are high among this particular population, with alcohol and tobacco being the most common culprits. Previous research suggests that the prevalence of drinking and smoking among Mexican Americans is increased compared to Mexicans living in Mexico, and substance use rates are highest in those most accustomed to United States culture. While acculturation may initially increase exposure to healthcare options, Mexican Americans are disproportionally uneducated and have lower socioeconomic status than …
Calibration Study Of A Bacterial Quantification Technique Using Transport Swabs And Line Inoculations On Agar Growth Medium, Seth Larue
Honors Theses
Enumeration of bacteria has been the subject of research for over a century. Some of the techniques that have been developed include viable plate counts, the most probable number assessment, and more modern molecular techniques. Many of the newer molecular-based techniques provide little or no information about the viability of the cells being counted, and are generally not quantitative. Having quantitative data for potentially pathogenic bacteria on surfaces can be very useful in many settings, particularly in healthcare facilities. Knowing the numbers of bacterial cells present on surfaces within healthcare facilities may be important to attempt to study the cause …

Environmental Dna (Edna) Surveys For The Smalltooth Sawfish, Pristis Pectinata, In The Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana, Emma M. Humphreys
Honors Theses
The Critically Endangered smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata, was historically found throughout tropical and subtropical coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean. As a result of mortalities in fisheries and habitat degradation, they became largely restricted to southwest Florida in the U.S. and the Bahamas by the 1980s. However, recent public encounter reports of sawfish in the Florida panhandle, Mississippi, and Louisiana suggest this species is occasionally present in northern Gulf of Mexico waters. Targeted species surveys are needed to improve our understanding of the occurrence and status of this species in these waters. This research used environmental DNA (eDNA) methods …

Environmental Justice Analysis Of Drinking Water Policies In Michigan Cities, Annika Paldan
Honors Theses
This thesis examined environmental justice aspects of drinking water policies in four cities across Michigan: Flint, Birmingham, St. Joseph, and Benton Harbor. An overview of the history of the environmental justice movement, environmental racism, and drinking water policies provided the basis for a four-part evaluative criterion to assess environmental justice components at the municipal level. These criteria include (1) housing tenure, (2) age, size, and service line composition of the infrastructure, (3) public participation in the policy process, and (4) emergency management of the city. Findings indicate that environmental justice has come a long way, with cities now incorporating components …
