Fragmentation Within The Modern Basque Nationalist Movement And Its Implications For Basque Cultural Identity, Kathryn Zoe Merrell Jan 2006

Fragmentation Within The Modern Basque Nationalist Movement And Its Implications For Basque Cultural Identity, Kathryn Zoe Merrell

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the Basque Nationalist Movement from its inception to modem times. Through the exploration of empirical data, this thesis will show how the processes of industrialization, urbanization, immigration, globalization, and the dissemination of information through the mass media affect the Nationalist ideology in the Basque region. In the conclusion, it becomes apparent that the Nationalist ideology becomes increasingly water downed as Nationalist leaders attempt to make their brand of Nationalism more appealing to the Spanish government and the European Union. By doing this, the Basque Nationalist Movement reflects the changing cultural identity of the Basque region and shows …

The Effects Of A Pre-Operative Education Program On Anxiety And Cortisol Levels Prior To And Following Surgery, Lou Ann Balducci

Honors Theses

Evidence suggests that lower levels of stress may negatively impact the healing process and tissue repair after surgery. The purpose of the investigation was to assess the effectiveness of a pre-operative educational program on reducing pre-operative and post¬ operative anxiety levels for patients having orthopedic surgery. Three subjects volunteered to participate in this study. The State Anxiety Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale questionnaires all showed that Subject 1 (treatment subject) did not have the highest anxiety or stress levels. In addition. cortisol levels were lower in Subject 1. Furthermore, Subject 1 was the most confident …

Spears For Hire: The Utilization And Motivations Of Greek Mercenaries In The Archaic And Classical Ages., Stephen Kyle Tadlock Jan 2006

Spears For Hire: The Utilization And Motivations Of Greek Mercenaries In The Archaic And Classical Ages., Stephen Kyle Tadlock

Honors Theses

Greek mercenaries were widespread in the Mediterranean in the Archaic and Classical periods. This thesis examines the mercenaries themselves and the kingdoms that employed them in order to discover both why mercenaries turned to the service and why rulers hired them. The focus is primarily on Greek hoplites serving in the kingdoms of Persia and Egypt, although other mercenaries and other employers are also considered. Most of the sources used in this study were Greek literary works in translation, although some use was made of archaeological, epigraphical and rhetorical evidence. The ancient sources used were chosen based upon previous readings …

The True Patron Of Ireland : Saint Brigit And The Rise Of Celtic Christianity, Autumn Dolan May 2005

The True Patron Of Ireland : Saint Brigit And The Rise Of Celtic Christianity, Autumn Dolan

Honors Theses

When Saint Patrick landed in Ireland in 432 AD, history says that he brought Christianity to the Irish. In actuality, though, Patrick's arrival was the beginning of a religious struggle between Rome and Ireland. Patrick's Church was based on Roman traditions and his mission in Ireland was not just to defeat paganism, but to intercede in the foundations of an already developing Celtic Church. To challenge Patrick and his Roman ways, Ireland exalted a saint of its own. Saint Brigit ( 452-525 AD) and the characteristics she represented in Irish hagiography clearly illustrated the ideal Irish saint. Ireland's reverence for …

From Opposing Sides : The Duality Of Citizens' And Their Government's Views On Town Squares, Zachary Powell Apr 2005

From Opposing Sides : The Duality Of Citizens' And Their Government's Views On Town Squares, Zachary Powell

Honors Theses

The purpose of my paper is to explore how the State's and the people's views concerning town squares come together. I will focus mainly on the duality between these two views: one the one hand, the State uses these spaces to display its power and for physical security. On the other side, the populace sees these spaces as theirs, as central to their community as citizens. Furthermore, they see it as a place to confront their government. Where else would be better than the place where the government seems to take on physical form?

I will explore this duality in …

Postcolonial Melodrama : The Satanic Verses, The Mimic Men, The Namesake, Jason Przybylski Apr 2005

Postcolonial Melodrama : The Satanic Verses, The Mimic Men, The Namesake, Jason Przybylski

Honors Theses

The goal of this project is to explain the appropriateness of the genre of melodrama for understanding postcolonial literature. Throughout this paper I examine how reading postcolonial fiction as melodrama may help us both to understand postcolonial issues in new ways and, at the same time, to grasp how postcolonial literature changes and enhances the notion of melodrama.

A Comparison In Osteological Measurements Of Two Populations From East Tennessee, Corrine Vitek Mar 2005

A Comparison In Osteological Measurements Of Two Populations From East Tennessee, Corrine Vitek

Honors Theses

Forensic anthropology is the identification of skeletal remams in medicolegal death investigations. The foundation of forensic anthropology rests on "documented" skeletal collections, which provide a crucial repository of information from which experts can rely upon to make determinations about human skeletal remains. A "documented" skeletal collection is one in which the demographics (e.g., ancestry, sex, age, height) of each individual are supported by known facts about the decedent at the time of his/her death. A quantitative comparison between the Hamilton County Forensic Center's(HCFC) skeletal collection to the William M. Bass collection housed at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) …

Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly Jan 2005

Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly

Honors Theses

The findings are consistent with other recent studies in Latin America. Eric Patterson found a similar pattern in Argentina and Chile in his study in 2003 (Patterson 2003). The data shows that despite Mexico’s history ofstrained Church/ State relations and a 70-year authoritarian rule, the Protestants in Mexico tend to hold similar beliefs on the support for democracy as the Protestants of other Latin American countries.

The Value Of An Arts Rich Education: Why Every School Should Teach The Arts, Holly Louise Buntin Jan 2005

The Value Of An Arts Rich Education: Why Every School Should Teach The Arts, Holly Louise Buntin

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to prove that the arts should be a major component in every student’s education. Statistics, research findings, and case studies from throughout the years were compared and compiled together in order to make a strong argument in favor of the arts. The National Art Education Association website provided many statistics as did the National Center for Education Statistics. Two of the specific studies presented in this thesis came from Champions of Change, a collection of seven major studies done by professional academics. It was produced by the Arts Education Partnership, the President’s Committee on the Arts and …

Power, Positionality, And Conceptions Of Stewardship And Ownership In The Cleanup Of Nomans Land Island, Massachusetts, Michael Greenberg May 2004

Power, Positionality, And Conceptions Of Stewardship And Ownership In The Cleanup Of Nomans Land Island, Massachusetts, Michael Greenberg

Honors Theses

One of the most pressing issues facing Indigenous groups today, especially in the intimate New Engl'and communilties of the northeastern United States, is their ongoing struggle to reclaim and preserve sovereignty on land they once cultivated as stewards but now live on under the encroachment of larger States. In recent years, the United States government has sought to deal with issues of Native American sovereignty through granting federal recognition to tribes, thus creating a relationship of "nation-to-nation status" between a tribal government and the national government. This relationship generates a complex power structure on global, national, regional, and tribal levels, …

Sounds From The Valley : A History Of The U.C./U.T.C. Band, 1923 To 1979, Charles Christian Leonard

Honors Theses

This writer found a frustration while researching and writing this history. The things one really wants to know about cannot usually be found. Will Durant wrote in The Story of Civilization: Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting, and doing things historians usually record-while, on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry, whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happens on the banks. You will find some interesting events in the following pages, but you will not find …

Illuminating A Space For Women And Rhetoric, Lindsey M. Fox Apr 2004

Illuminating A Space For Women And Rhetoric, Lindsey M. Fox

Honors Theses

My overarching concerns are for the place and power of women in rhetoric and democracy. This concern developed during my study of classical rhetoric, when I noticed an obvious absence of women in rhetoric. For example, John Poulakos and Takis Poulakos state that any "ordinary person" could play a role on the political stage in Athens (34). This reference to "ordinary people" is proof that women were made invisible because, as George A. Kennedy explains, in classical Athens, democracy was only for "an assembly of all adult male citizens" (16). Male citizens, then, were actually rather extra-ordinary. Because democracy …

"Their Shoes Yet New" : The Immigrant Image In The Baltimore Riots Of 1812 And The Disagreement Over Nationality, John K. Dunn Jr Apr 2004

"Their Shoes Yet New" : The Immigrant Image In The Baltimore Riots Of 1812 And The Disagreement Over Nationality, John K. Dunn Jr

Honors Theses

This paper examines the ways in which immigrants were characterized in Baltimore immediately following that city's Riots in 1812. It finds that the "native" majority used the immigrant image in an attempt to determine the criteria of nationality. That image was not settled, however, and rather constituted a discussion between interested groups about the relative importance of ethnicity in the years before Jacksonian democracy. It also concludes that the peculiar conditions and social divisions of Baltimore directly contributed to the Baltimore Riots and that the riots provided an opportunity for prevalent stereotypes to surface.

Surveillance Of The Balto-Finnic Speakers: A Geolinguistic Inquiry, Lindsay E. Gwyther Mar 2004

Surveillance Of The Balto-Finnic Speakers: A Geolinguistic Inquiry, Lindsay E. Gwyther

Honors Theses

The Balto-Finnic languages of northeast Europe are part of the larger Uralic language family. Today, there are seven Balto-Finnic speaking nations, two of which govern their own independent sovereignties (Finland and Estonia). The other five nations lie precariously within the territorial borders of Russia and Latvia for the most part. This paper examines the geographic expanse and status of these languages over time and through space and develops a series of maps to better illustrate these patterns. Historical research demonstrates that their distribution has decreased in area, but strengthened and centralized in certain regions, enabling their presence in a predominantly …

Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis Jan 2004

Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis

Honors Theses

The name of the world's largest hydroelectric dam, Brazil's Itaipu Binacional, comes from an Ava-Guarani word meaning "singing stone." Before Itaipu became affiliated with dams it represented a smaller, but no less significant monument: a large rock formation in the middle of the Parana River that produced song when struck by water.₂ Today, neither the rock nor the Ava-Guarani tribe remain. In their place is a gargantuan hydroelectric dam that produces sounds more like a thunderous engine than song. When the Brazilian government, in conjunction with Itaipu Binacional officials, constructed the power plant, it not only silenced the singing stone, …

Faulkner's Wake: The Emergence Of Literary Oxford, John Louis Fuller Jan 2004

Faulkner's Wake: The Emergence Of Literary Oxford, John Louis Fuller

Honors Theses

The genesis of this project was a commercial I saw on television advertising the University of Mississippi. “Is it the words that capture a place, or the place that captures the words?” noted actor and Mississippi native Morgan Freeman asked. I had been confident in my knowledge of literary Oxford, but the commercial made me wonder just what had created this literary environment I took for granted. I set about my task dividing the culture into three realms of influence, the town and its history, the school and its academic authority, and Square Books and its economic influence. As I …

American Identity In The Illinois Territory, 1809-1818, Daniel Northrup Finucane Apr 2003

American Identity In The Illinois Territory, 1809-1818, Daniel Northrup Finucane

Honors Theses

Many histories have been writen about Illinois, both by early inhabitants and modern scholars. The histories are quite inclusive, yet none specifically address the topic that I am examining. Scarce material exists regarding the Americanism of the early settlers in Illinois. But, in fashioning my argument on the subject, I have taken from a variety of these cources bits and pieces of information about geography, demographics, economics, politics, and social life. My hope is that these facts and arguments will help to substantiate my suggestions regarding the mindsets of territorial Illinoisians. The work coming closest to my focus is an …

A Blueprint For Environmental Sustainability Along The James River, Trevor S. Macdougall Jan 2003

A Blueprint For Environmental Sustainability Along The James River, Trevor S. Macdougall

Honors Theses

The paper is the result of a research project conducted through the University of Richmond, the desired end of which is to produce a Blueprint for Environmental Sustainability Along the James River, a document that provides guidelines for managing the urban riverfront in a sustainable fashion.

The first chapter is designed to outline the layout of this report. The subsequent literature review is divided into four chapters: The Ecological Model, An Overview of Sustainability, Sustainable Practices in Other Cities, and Richmond Development: Past and Present. The first pair of these chapters provide a general assessment of two important environmental paradigms, …

The Effect Of Slavery On Southern Farmland Values In The Antebellum And Postbellum Era, Brandon Devlin Jan 2003

The Effect Of Slavery On Southern Farmland Values In The Antebellum And Postbellum Era, Brandon Devlin

Honors Theses

In the past 30 years, the legacy of African-American slavery has experienced a transformation in historical perspective. Morality aside, several historians have suggested that the accepted views regarding slavery need revision, particularly in an economic sense. Utilizing cliometrics, census records, diaries, and first-hand accounts of slavery in the South, economic historians such as Robert Fogel and Stanley Engennan have made a compelling case for the viability and profitability of slavery by exposing the nuances of the system that historical generalities often ignore. Of course, words like "viable" and ''profitable" do not necessarily mean "virtuous"or even "preferable", but it does imply …

The Influence Of Japanese Figure Conventions On French Art Of The Late Nineteenth Century, Lana Carol Zepponi Jan 2003

The Influence Of Japanese Figure Conventions On French Art Of The Late Nineteenth Century, Lana Carol Zepponi

Honors Theses

Japanese ukiyo-e prints influenced the treatment of figures in French art during the second half of the nineteenth century. While this topic has been addressed by scholars of japonisme, I did not find a work in English focused solely on it. Herein, I analyze the transfer of Japanese figure conventions to French art by compiling Gabriel Weisberg, Colta Feller Ives, and Jay Martin observations, and comparing French and Japanese art to information from scholars such Kloner, presenting my support my argument. Works by major artists Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Mary as own Cassatt are discussed. I chose these artists …

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson May 2002

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson

Honors Theses

On December 29, 1890 the United States Seventh Calvary descended upon a group of practitioners of the blossoming Ghost Dance religion and killed more than 300 Indians belonging to multiple Northern Plains nations. The massacre at Wounded Knee Creek was the apex of the United States government's violent campaign to win the American west from its original inhabitants, and it marked a transition in strategy in the young republic's assault on Native America. Having essentially won the land battles to annex the bulk of the economically valuable Native territory, the United States turned its attention away from the physical disposal …

Rape Myths Among A Sample Of Utc Students, Nicolette Mendenhall Mar 2002

Rape Myths Among A Sample Of Utc Students, Nicolette Mendenhall

Honors Theses

Rape has a tremendous impact upon victims. The victim has to come to terms with the reality that she was raped,as well as face the new perceptions that other people will have about her. These perceptions will be a result of conceptions about rape that are not realistic. These unrealistic beliefs are called 'rape myths.' There has been much research on rape myths for the following reasons: they may upset the victim, they provide justification for rapists to rape someone, and they may affect a woman's behavior because she may avoid activities she believes will lead her to be raped. …

Elementary History Education And Children's Perceptions Of Time, Christine M. Mccreedy Feb 2002

Elementary History Education And Children's Perceptions Of Time, Christine M. Mccreedy

Honors Theses

When I was in upper elementary school, social studies, history in particular, was often nothing more than reading a text to imprint for a short period of time the "facts" of history. I read books through most of the instruction. I read so many wonderful works of historical fiction, the Holocaust and the Civil War being among the most interesting subjects. Through excellent and not-so-good works of historical fiction, I saw history unfolding in the present, not just the past. The characters gave faces, stories, and meaning to the text we used in class. I grew up with a strong …
