Political Polarization And Networking In The Modern Internet Campaign, Alan Michael Pate

Honors Theses

For this study, the methods and techniques employed by internet campaign managers and major online interest groups from 1996 to 2008 were studied. Additionally, for the 60 days leading up to the 2008 presidential election, e-mail and online newsletter communication disseminated to supporters from the major presidential parties, candidates, and interest groups were tracked and analyzed. Since the 1996 presidential election, presidential candidates have increasingly used the internet to interact with supporters. This study examines the evolution of this relatively recent phenomenon and theorizes about its potential effects on democratic participation. Specifically, this paper argues that although the modem internet …

Testing A Model: Ca2+ Induced Exposure Of Tryptophan In Neural-Cadherins, Chinelo Udemgba Jan 2009

Testing A Model: Ca2+ Induced Exposure Of Tryptophan In Neural-Cadherins, Chinelo Udemgba

Honors Theses

Cadherins are transmembrane cell adhesion proteins that are critical for tissue formation and maintenance. Cell adhesion by cadherin requires binding of 3 calcium ions at the interfaces between the ectodomain modules. Recent data suggest a model in which calcium induces a relatively large conformational change in the first ectodomain module, domain 1, by causing the detachment of the A-strand from the core of domain 1 and exposure of a tryptophan in the second position, W2. The exposure of W2 is crucial for formation of a strand-crossover structure that is believed to be the adhesive dimer interface. In order to establish …

Neural Cadherin: A Study Of Domain 1., Elaine Ann Clark Jan 2009

Neural Cadherin: A Study Of Domain 1., Elaine Ann Clark

Honors Theses

Cadherins are a class of transmembrane proteins responsible for calcium dependent cell-cell adhesion. Classic cadherins share a common structure involving five extracellular domains, each connected by a 7 residue sequence known as a linker region. As these domains are modular in nature, this study focuses primarily on the first extracellular domain of neural cadherin without and with the adjacent linker region. NCADl and NCADl-Ll. Upon calcium binding, a tryptophan residue located in domain 1 allows for the adhesive activity of the cadherin through formation of a strand crossover structure. With the dissected NCADl and NCADl-LI, the binding pocket for calcium …

Creation Of A Topoisomerase I-Efgp Cell Line Using Recent Knock-In Technology, James Wayne Delancey Jan 2009

Creation Of A Topoisomerase I-Efgp Cell Line Using Recent Knock-In Technology, James Wayne Delancey

Honors Theses

Topoisomerase I (TOPI) is a nuclear enzyme that relieves torsional strain in DNA during transcription or replication. Furthermore, TOPl is the target enzyme for camptothecin antitumor drugs. Traditional immunohistochemical methods of studying TOPl expression require cell fixation, which arrests cellular metabolism at an instance in time. In efforts where TOPl studies rely on a function of time, cell fixation must occur at many finite intervals so that researchers may take many data points to simulate a real time assessment. To study TOPl activity continuously in cells, we are implementing recent gene targeting/knock-in technology to create a natively expressed TOP 1-EGFP …

Foundations And Interpretations Of Quantum Mechanics, Cory Johnson May 2008

Foundations And Interpretations Of Quantum Mechanics, Cory Johnson

Honors Theses

The first famous thought experiment of Einstein gives rise to his theories of relativity, the bedrock of modern astrophysics and cosmology. His second famous thought experiment begins the investigation into the foundations of quantum mechanics. It leads to a paradox, inspiring various 'no-go' theorems proven by Bell, Kochen, and Specker. Physicists and philosophers worldwide become increasingly dissatisfied with the probabilistic complementarity interpretation (Born-Bohr) and eventually offer their own accounts of the theory. By the end of the 20th century two alternative approaches stand out as the best candidates: Both the hidden variables interpretation (de Broglie-Bohm) and the many worlds interpretation …

Temperature And Magnetic Field Dependence Of The Electronic Excitations In The Nickel Chain Compound Nino, Lucas Laviolet May 2008

Temperature And Magnetic Field Dependence Of The Electronic Excitations In The Nickel Chain Compound Nino, Lucas Laviolet

Honors Theses

Temperature and magnetic field dependent absorbance spectra were taken on the Ni2+ chain compound NINO (Ni(C?H??N?)?NO?(ClO?)) in the range from 8,500 to 25,000 cm-?. The identification of an effective C?v symmetry about the nickel ions is supported by assignment of the low temperature absorbance bands. The intensity of many bands is found to be temperature dependent, and in several bands, a shift to higher energy is observed at lower temperatures. A correlation is noted between the field dependence of the spin forbidden electronic transitions and the magnetic properties of NINO. Below a crossover magnetic field, Hc ? 10 T, the …

New products such as credit derivatives have increased the number of indicators …

Imagining Anti-Semitism : Artistic Representations Of The Dreyfus Affair, Alexa Stemmler Apr 2008

Imagining Anti-Semitism : Artistic Representations Of The Dreyfus Affair, Alexa Stemmler

Honors Theses

The industrialization and large-scale urbanization of France in the nineteenth century drove many working-class people to Paris. With new disposable income and leisure time, they flocked to the boulevards, department stores and cafes of the capital to amuse themselves or simply to wander around the city. Though 1848 was to be France's last real political revolution, Paris remained the scene of cultural and social innovations due largely to this street culture; the mob was as powerful at the tum of the century as it had been in 1789. Vanessa Schwartz writes, "The crowd and the experience of belonging to an …
