A Study Of Laryngeal Variability In Three Specific Consonant-Vowel Syllable Contexts, Maria Winston Arokiasamy
A Study Of Laryngeal Variability In Three Specific Consonant-Vowel Syllable Contexts, Maria Winston Arokiasamy
Honors Theses
This paper deals with consonants being paired with vowels and how and why two distinct consonants chosen can affect vowel patterns on three specified vowels. It is a deliberate measure here to have no consonants after the vowel so as to avoid post articulatory influences. Focus Is placed on the relationship of variations in periods and frequencies for three repetitions, with no context Involved.

Censorship In British Broadcasting: The Government's Role, Paula S. Earls
Censorship In British Broadcasting: The Government's Role, Paula S. Earls
Honors Theses
You cannot tell it by watching British television, but the political process of broadcasting in Great Britain is a complicated one. In it are government laws restricting free speech and committees of government officials who have the power to decide what should and should not be broadcast.
An Analysis Of Current Theories Of Constitutional Interpretation, Nicole Cress
An Analysis Of Current Theories Of Constitutional Interpretation, Nicole Cress
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to describe and explain the many different theories of constitutional interpretation. I have placed all theories discussed in one of two categories: interpretist or noninterpretivist. This paper also attempts to analyze the way in which these theories of constitutional interpretation are implemented by the United States Supreme Court Justices who advocate them.
Wordsworth's Abstraction Of Forms From Nature: A Necessary Process, Robert P. Sulcer
Wordsworth's Abstraction Of Forms From Nature: A Necessary Process, Robert P. Sulcer
Honors Theses
Wordsworth's poetry abstracts forms from nature and man in order to make nature and man last; this abstraction is a changing of feeling into thought, of perception into conception, of the material into the word.
Factors Influencing Arms Control, Valerie A. Sulfaro
Factors Influencing Arms Control, Valerie A. Sulfaro
Honors Theses
It is the intent of this paper to provide a comprehensive examination of the variables which act upon the arms control process without providing an in-depth analysis of any one variable. This paper will illustrate the influence of the actors who formulate arms control, and the political environment surrounding negotiations, in order to provide an understanding of how arms control treaties are shaped.
Effects Of Hippocampal Inactivation On The Performance Of A Three-Dimensional Object Discrimination Task By Environmentally Enriched Rats, Christopher T. Jones
Effects Of Hippocampal Inactivation On The Performance Of A Three-Dimensional Object Discrimination Task By Environmentally Enriched Rats, Christopher T. Jones
Honors Theses
This study was an attempt to show that enriched rats can learn a three dimensional object visual discrimination DMTS and DNMTS task. The task utilized toys from the EC for sample objects on an alternating arm Y-maze. Any subjects which were successful in learning the task were to then be tested as to the effects of reversible inactivation of the hippocampus on the performance of these tasks.

Initial Dyadic Peer Interaction Of Adhd And Normal Children, Julie A. Hubbard
Initial Dyadic Peer Interaction Of Adhd And Normal Children, Julie A. Hubbard
Honors Theses
The present study assesses the nature of the behavior of ADHD children in an initial social encounter with a peer. Eight pairs each of previously unacquainted ADHD/normal and normal/normal children were videotaped as they interacted in a free-play setting for 30 minutes. All ADHD subjects were currently receiving psychostimulant medication. As compared to the normal/normal dyads, the ADHD/normal dyads engaged in more solitary play as well as less associative play. The ADHD/normal dyads also had a greater latency to reach rule-governed associative play and engaged in less affective verbalization than the normal/normal dyads. Sequential analyses revealed that the normal/normal dyads, …
The Correlation Between The Motive To Achieve And The Motive To Affiliate In College Women, Lisa Salladin
The Correlation Between The Motive To Achieve And The Motive To Affiliate In College Women, Lisa Salladin
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between the motives to achieve and to affiliate in college senior women and to compare that correlation earlier findings that consistently produced a significant negative relationship. It has been suggested in the 1970's that for women achievement and affiliation were be_coming less adversarial and approaching a more balanced coexistence. These motivations were measured by the frequently utilized Edward's Personal Preference Schedule in an effort to help strengthen the comparability of the present results with those previous findings. Interviews were conducted in an effort to shed light on whether these women …

A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong
A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong
Honors Theses
Just what is to be understood by the term "cost-benefit analysis" ("benefit-cost analysis")? The question itself arises from a curiosity into how government decisions (which affect all) are made. This paper gives an elementary discussion of constitutive parts, raising and responding to some initial criticisms. It seems fairly evident, unneedful of additional explanation or elaboration. The individual on the street would simply declare that it sounded like some rather ordinary decision-making process which involved the consideration of the costs and benefits incurred by the paths of action that might be selected. "Ordinary" means accessible to anyone and not the exclusive …
A Fair Hanging: Ethics In Editorial Cartooning, Allison Anderson
A Fair Hanging: Ethics In Editorial Cartooning, Allison Anderson
Honors Theses
More than any other type of journalist, the editorial cartoonist is free to say what he thinks in a very pointed way, but this freedom has to be balanced against other values.
Irish-American Fiction And The Ethnic Identity Of Irish-Americans, Mary Carty
Irish-American Fiction And The Ethnic Identity Of Irish-Americans, Mary Carty
Honors Theses
As the largest immigrant group in the history of the United States, the Irish have had a tremendous impact on American society. Politically, the Irish flooded city government offices, eventually working up to the nation's highest office. Economically, they swelled the ranks of the labor market that was so crucial to America's growing industry. Religiously, they took over the leadership and strengthened the establishment of the Roman Catholic church in America, bringing to it their own parochial brand of Irish Catholicism. The Irish also influenced American culture with their successes in literature and the arts, and with their widespread emphasis …
Use Of Economic Instruments In Biodiversity Conservation Projects: The Sustainability Of Projects In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Amy Lyons
Honors Theses
Under what conditions do biodiversity conservation projects that use economic incentives promote the most significant and sustainable biodiversity protection? The study of how nations can best invest their resources to promote conservation while simultaneously encouraging a sustainable form of economic development has recently become a major focus for ecologically rich, less-developed countries. There have been many innovative and successful attempts at combining biodiversity protection with economic development, and others that have done more harm than good. Since there is no guaranteed recipe for a successful project, it is crucial to examine projects in detail to discern which type of project …
The Need For Transition Programs, Ethel Zurliene
The Need For Transition Programs, Ethel Zurliene
Honors Theses
It is evident that although there is special education in the high schools for students with mild disabilities, a lack of preparing these students for the work world, a lack of who is responsible for the vocational programming for these students, and a lack of what jobs are available and how to find out about agencies who can link students with jobs, has prevented many students who are capable of working from finding meaningful work.
Outcome-Biased Correspondent Inferences And Choice Behavior In Social Dilemmas : "Acting On Inference", Shannon J. Pratt
Outcome-Biased Correspondent Inferences And Choice Behavior In Social Dilemmas : "Acting On Inference", Shannon J. Pratt
Honors Theses
An experiment employing 38 intro-psychology students was performed in order to a) observe the outcome-biased correspondent inference, b) investigate whether this inference may be manifested in social dilemma behavior, and c) investigate the role of social values in reactions to feedback, investment behaviors, and sensitivity to the correspondent inference. The experiment consisted of two parts. The first part categorized subjects as either cooperators or defectors using the Ring Measure of Social Values. In the second part, subjects completed a booklet with the aid of taped instructions. The booklet contained a questionnaire, a bogus scenario, and three investment situations. Results showed …
Power And The Social Order: Sex Role Stereotyping In Children's Television, Christine Burke
Power And The Social Order: Sex Role Stereotyping In Children's Television, Christine Burke
Honors Theses
The aim of this study is to offer an assessment of the common themes in feminist, Lacanian psychoanalytic and deconstructionist theory. It will then discuss the degree to which these three discourses allow us to grasp the implications of the political socialization which occurs through television programming directed primarily at children.
There are points of commonality and discordance between these approaches. My aim will not be to make the argument that one approach is best, nor to arrive at a final synthesis. Rather, I construe these theoretical approaches as different lenses through which we can apprehend and evaluate the messages …
Doubletake : The Obsessions Of Sylvia Plath, Brian Connors
Doubletake : The Obsessions Of Sylvia Plath, Brian Connors
Honors Theses
For twenty five years, analyses of the link between Sylvia Plath's life and writings have too often focused on selected rebellious incidents and a handful of poems written in the last six months of her llfe. These shallow and often sensational literary autopsies reach seemingly pre-determined conclusions about Plath and usually blame Plath's mother, her husband, and male-dominated 1940s and 1950s America for the vitriolic tone of her writings and for her suicide at age thirty. Unfortunately, oversimplification is the rule in Plath studies. Examinations of Plath are particularly hazardous because such an enormous amount of her work was autobiographical …

Mathematics Education In The Soviet Union And In Tennessee, Penny B. Pierce
Mathematics Education In The Soviet Union And In Tennessee, Penny B. Pierce
Honors Theses
This thesis will examine mathematics education in the Soviet Union and compare it to that in Tennessee. It will be composed of three main sections, the first being a brief history of mathematics education in the Soviet Union and in Tennessee. It is necessary to study the history of changes in the respective systems to realize why the mathematics curriculum is the way it is today. A study of the curriculum will then be the second section. The third section will consider teacher training in the Soviet Union and in Tennessee. This area is included because of its obvious relevance …
Personal Growth Group Design: Leadership Training Group For Parish R.C.I.A. Processes, Rita M. Araoz
Personal Growth Group Design: Leadership Training Group For Parish R.C.I.A. Processes, Rita M. Araoz
Honors Theses
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a long-term process--usually nine months, but sometimes up to two years--in which men and women become members of the Roman Catholic Church. Often they are converting from other faiths or denominational backgrounds, but this is not always the case. R.C.I.A. culminates in the Sacrament of Baptism or Reception into Full Communion at the Easter Vigil Mass, but this is not the end. It is only the beginning of new life within the Catholic Christian community. The purpose of this group is to train non-professional individuals to become effective group leaders of R.C.I.A. …
Classroom Observation Of School-Age Addh, Conduct Disorder, And Depressed Children, Kristin S. Allan
Classroom Observation Of School-Age Addh, Conduct Disorder, And Depressed Children, Kristin S. Allan
Honors Theses
Eight subjects were observed during classroom activity to determine the context of their social behavior. Four subjects were internalizers and the other four were externalizers. Subjects were observed at an inpatient psychiatric facility for children. It was hypothesized that externalizers would exhibit more off-task behaviors and internalizers would engage in solitary play more often. Results showed trends which supported the hypotheses. Implications of medication effects, as well as further research using a more molecular coding scheme were discussed.
Objectivity And Aesthetic Judgment, Glenn Poskocil
Objectivity And Aesthetic Judgment, Glenn Poskocil
Honors Theses
Where do we draw the line between what is and is not a work of art? and, how are we to distinguish between so called "good" and "bad" works of art? There is a tendency to blur the distinction between these questions because they seem, in certain senses, to be inextricably bound to one another. It is not uncommon, for instance, to hear someone praise something by referring to it as a "work of art," yet most of us agree that not all works of art are "good," even in the aesthetic sense. Too often this distinction is muddled by …

The Cultural Significance Of Religious Festivals Of Seville: Holy Week And The Romeria Of Rocio, Brent Metz
The Cultural Significance Of Religious Festivals Of Seville: Holy Week And The Romeria Of Rocio, Brent Metz
Honors Theses
This project began long before I traveled to Spain. With the guidance of Dr. Smith, I wrote preliminary questionnaires and learned research methods and interviewing techniques in the fall, 1985. He also assisted me in writing a research proposal for the Waldo-Sangren Scholarship, and this award made my trip to Spain possible. In addition, I collected books and other information from Western's Waldo Library and from professors and friends who had previously been in Spain. Although I later modified my questionnaires and changed my conception of religious festivals in Seville, my preparation last fall was critical in orienting myself to …
The Effects Of Strain Differences On The Binding Of Concavalian A To Mouse Sperm, Lisa A. Mckay
The Effects Of Strain Differences On The Binding Of Concavalian A To Mouse Sperm, Lisa A. Mckay
Honors Theses
The current study, lectins were used as genetic probes to determine the phenotype of the sperm from different strains of mice. Lectins are proteins of non-immune origin, which bind to specific carbohydrates (McCoy, 1986). Being that virtually all cell membranes contain carbohydrate components, lectins have been used to identify all types of cells. In this study, a biotinylated lectin Concavalian A (Con A) derived from Canavalia ensiformis, was used and binding was detected using an avidin-biotin peroxidase (ABP) complex technique. The object of the current research was to 1) determine if mouse strain differences have an effect on lectin binding, …
