Trials Bike Frame Concept, David Boboltz, Rob Harmer, Caleb Vanderveen
Trials Bike Frame Concept, David Boboltz, Rob Harmer, Caleb Vanderveen
Honors Theses
Development of a Concept Trials Frame was a mechanical engineering design project that developed a new bicycle frame that has the strength and durability to be used for trials bike riding. The scope of the project was placed solely on the bicycle's frame. Current frames were analyzed based on their strength, durability, stiffness, weight, and appearance. These factors were ranked for importance and became the performance targets for the new frame. Several designs that utilize elastic strain energy to increase performance were brainstormed. Following SolidWorks modeling, equivalent impact loads were calculated using several analytical methods. These loads were then applied …
Perceptions Of Speech-Language Pathologists, Abby M. Spicko
Perceptions Of Speech-Language Pathologists, Abby M. Spicko
Honors Theses
According to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, speech-language pathologists practice in a wide variety of work settings including schools, hospitals, clinics, private homes, nursing homes, and more (ASHA, 2007). As a result of the diverse environments in which speech language pathologists are employed, they work in collaboration with people from many other professions, including teachers, psychologists, doctors, nurses, social works. and occupational and physical therapists. It is important to understand the relationships between the speech language pathologist and their co-workers and others' attitudes toward the profession. This paper examines how those working with speech language pathologists across various work settings, …
A Study Of The Impact Of Adult Day Care Centers On The Caregivers Of Clients With Dementia, Abby L. Olsen
A Study Of The Impact Of Adult Day Care Centers On The Caregivers Of Clients With Dementia, Abby L. Olsen
Honors Theses
The purpose of this descriptive study was to evaluate the impact of adult day care centers (ADC) on the perceived stress of the caregivers of loved ones with dementia and on their perceptions of their loved one's level of functioning or quality of life. Five caregivers whom had a loved one attending the same ADC were interviewed to obtain qualitative data concerning their perceptions about ADC utilization. Two assessment tools, the Caregiver Strain Index and the QA Study Assessment Tool were also used to determine quantitatively the impact of adult day care attendance on caregiver stress. The results suggested that …
Word Oper Findan : Seamus Heaney And The Translation Of Beowulf, Jack Harding Bell
Word Oper Findan : Seamus Heaney And The Translation Of Beowulf, Jack Harding Bell
Honors Theses
In 2000, Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney published a new translation of the early medieval epic, Beowulf The work was subsequently lauded as a masterpiece. Despite this ensuing surge of interest in Heaney's translation, very few scholars have undertaken the task of a critical analysis of the translation and none have assumed the task of a comparative analysis between the original text and Heaney's version. Most, it seems, have assumed that Heaney's translation is a faithful rendition of the original, and with good reason. Heaney maintains fidelity to the structure, stylistics, and meter of the original, as well as to its …
Figuring The Refugee, Genevieve Goulding
Figuring The Refugee, Genevieve Goulding
Honors Theses
''Figuring the Refugee" explores humanitarian relief for refugees as a discourse; a system of communication and identity-making which creates a subhuman refugee and perpetuates the problems of assistance. Through an auto-ethnographic narrative of my experience in the camp, I consider how the space itself creates exploitative binaries between aid workers and refugees. In an analysis of the United Nations 2006 film appeal, I argue that the discourse is normalized by images of the dehumanized refugee. The rhetoric of the film appeal limits the response of the western viewer to an uncritical sympathy, and allows for ineffective models of refugee assistance …
Crossover Property Of The Nonperiodic Autocorrelation Of Quaternary Sequences, Michael Pohl
Crossover Property Of The Nonperiodic Autocorrelation Of Quaternary Sequences, Michael Pohl
Honors Theses
Sequences with identical nonperiodic autocorrelation functions have recently been used to construct Golay sequences different than the Davis-Jedwab construction. In this thesis, we construct infinite families of quaternary sequences with identical non periodic autocorrelation functions. These results demonstrate that current con structions for quaternary families are not all encompassing and need further study.
A Critical Comparison Of The Church-State Jurisprudence Of Chief Justice William Rehnquist And Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Christy Harrison
A Critical Comparison Of The Church-State Jurisprudence Of Chief Justice William Rehnquist And Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Christy Harrison
Honors Theses
The relationship between government and religion is a difficult one. The question of how religious beliefs and practices should be treated by the government remains at the forefront of constitutional debate. There are concerns about religious freedom and the extent to which it conflicts with public duty. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." The Supreme Court's interpretation of the religion clauses has been unclear, inconsistent, and, therefore, extremely controversial. In fact, it has not become less controversial over time, but quite …
Scientific Advice To The House : Who Has The Congressional Ear?, Kristen Greenholt
Scientific Advice To The House : Who Has The Congressional Ear?, Kristen Greenholt
Honors Theses
In 2001, President George W. Bush remarked, "Science and technology have never been more essential to the defense of the nation and the health of the economy." The responsibility for formulating science and technology policy primarily falls into the hands of Congress. However, since few members of Congress possess a broad base of knowledge in either science or technology, they must rely on external sources of information. I examine the sources of information on which they rely, or the question "Who has the Congressional Ear?"with regard to science and technology issues. Using the downfall of the Office of Technology Assessment …
Telling Arguments : A Weaverian Analysis Of Supreme Court Cases Regarding Civil Rights And Affirmative Action, Cathy Reno
Honors Theses
In his book, The Ethics of Rhetoric, influential rhetoric and culture scholar Richard M. Weaver articulates a framework called Grammatical Categories. These classifications are used to identify both the motivation and implications of arguments. There are four discrete categories. The first, and least difficult to formulate is the argument from circumstance. The second Grammatical Category is cause and effect, which links an action to a consequence. The third category is called the argument from similitude in which, as the name implies, the rhetor looks for inherent connections between certain objects or ideas. Finally, the argument from definition (or principle) is …
Framing Femininity: Media Coverage Of A Tennessee Mayoral Campaign, Katie Broderick
Framing Femininity: Media Coverage Of A Tennessee Mayoral Campaign, Katie Broderick
Honors Theses
In recent years, more women have emerged from both major parties and across all regions and disciplines to make their voices heard in the political arena. Slowly, the number of women in Senate seats and governor's mansions has inched higher, and there is a strong possibility that we will have a female presidential candidate in the next election. In 2007, 87 women are serving in the United States Congress. They hold 16, or 16%, of the 100 Senate seats, and 71, or 16.4%, of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. In state positions, percentages are slightly higher: in …
Voices Of The Poor: Poverty And Growth In Albania, Magda Tsaneva
Voices Of The Poor: Poverty And Growth In Albania, Magda Tsaneva
Honors Theses
This paper uses three waves of panel surveys at the household level to study growth and poverty in Albania over the period 2002-2004. It attempts to answer two main questions. The first question is directed at finding the micro determinants of growth and aims to expose the obstacles households face to improve their economic situation. The main focus of the analysis is to investigate the importance of health, education, and infrastructure indicators for income growth. The second question asks whether growth in Albania during the period 20022004 has been pro-poor. I find that there is some evidence for a convergence …
Photojournalistic Manipulations Of Reality: The Power Over Knowledge, Valerie Friedman
Photojournalistic Manipulations Of Reality: The Power Over Knowledge, Valerie Friedman
Honors Theses
This project is an anthropological study on how students at Colby College interpret photojournalistic images and news media. Using extensive literature, I strove to find a better understanding of how news agencies and the media control the flow and availability of information. Through fieldwork and numerous research methods, I wanted to understand how students formed relationships with images and news stories they encountered. This paper shows how the media and images people see in the news controls the minds and ideas of the public. Newspapers, magazines, the radio, internet sites, television broadcasts, and other forms of news media are primary …
Collective Moral Responsibility, Allyson Rudolph
Collective Moral Responsibility, Allyson Rudolph
Honors Theses
What is collective moral responsibility? And why should you care? The answer to the former, like any good philosophical question, is largely unresolved. Although writing on collective responsibility has flourished, particularly in the wake of the Holocaust, and despite the existence of an increasingly consistent bibliography of essential writings in the field, there is no definitive authority on the subject. Unlike individual moral responsibility, however, there is little consensus among the ranks. Many theories disclaim the existence or the possibility of collective moral responsibility—a group is just not the sort of thing that can ever be considered a morally responsible …
Gendered Struggle For The Freedom From Violence Using Frantz Fanon’S Theory In Three Postcolonial Novels: Albert Wendt’S Pouliuli, Tsitsi Dangarembga’S Nervous Conditions, And Edwidge Danticat’S Breath, Eyes, Memory, Robin M. Respaut
Honors Theses
While studying abroad in New Zealand last year, I became intrigued by Albert Wendt’s novel Pouliuli, because it was my first literary view into Pacific Island culture. My interest in the novel was part of my awakening to the particular damage done by the west in Oceania. By attending classes on the anthropology and sociology of postcolonial Pacific societies, I discovered how the west had acted in the region to encourage progressive technology in ways that handled native traditional culture with unconscious disrespect. I was stunned to learn that Oceania is the most aided region in the world today, surpassing …
“Nothing That Is So, Is So”: Indeterminate Language In Shakespeare, Matthew K. Crane
“Nothing That Is So, Is So”: Indeterminate Language In Shakespeare, Matthew K. Crane
Honors Theses
The Shakespearean canon is characterized by indeterminacy. His world is one where nothing is as it seems; men pose as women, nobles as commoners, and sisters as brothers. The resulting confusion challenges conventional norms, questioning gender, cultural, and other social boundaries. The surface uncertainty extends beneath the costumes and performers to the very foundation of theatre—language—as spaces emerge between words and meaning, and what is said and what is meant. Shakespeare’s use of ambiguous language opens his plays to multiple interpretations, creating a constant but fluctuating separation between the reader and text, the literal and figurative, and the expressed and …
Too Many Bad Cooks Spoiling The Broth? Effectiveness Of Ngos In Addressing Child Labour In El Salvador, Ivica Petríková
Too Many Bad Cooks Spoiling The Broth? Effectiveness Of Ngos In Addressing Child Labour In El Salvador, Ivica Petríková
Honors Theses
The reaction of the first world to the persevering plight of a large part of the third world varies. In response to the sometimes glaring disparities, many international organizations and multinational corporations have recently adopted a pro-development rhetoric with relation to the problem of global poverty. However, the rhetoric rarely translates into action. As David Bacon discusses, leaders of corporations and organizations now tend to conclude their speeches by expressing a desire to reduce the suffering of the third world. However, when it comes to agreeing on specific concessions that could indeed improve the world-wide economic situation, first world countries …
World Bank -Cpa Conflict: The Struggle To Define Human Rights And Development In The Philippines, Adam B. Robbins
World Bank -Cpa Conflict: The Struggle To Define Human Rights And Development In The Philippines, Adam B. Robbins
Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes the interactions between the World Bank (hereafter, the Bank) and the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), an indigenous and environmental advocacy group based in the Cordillera region of Luzon, in the Philippines. Using data gathered through both text-based and participatory research methods, I analyze the discursive relationship and violent confrontations between the two organizations. Conflicting development and human rights values cause the majority of these conflicts. I focus on how each organization enacts development and human rights, and how this leads to conflict. Ultimately, I intend for this thesis to offer practical guidance for the reader involved in …

Constructing Muammar Al-Gaddafi, Kristin Kushlan
Constructing Muammar Al-Gaddafi, Kristin Kushlan
Honors Theses
Rhetoricians such as Robert Ivie and George Lakoffhave examined the use of language of opposition to create and control various enemies during the War on Terror, but they have also ignored or overlooked numerous cases. This paper will examine one such case, that of Muammar al-Gaddafi, whose reciprocal violence eventually succumbed to the oppressor's global economic power. This case study will explore how the U.S. government rhetorically constructed Gaddafi in order to control both his identity within American society (as either an enemy or an ally), as well as the counter-violence that Gaddafi supposedly enacted against Western systems of power. …
The Rise And Fall Of America's Education President : George W. Bush's Political Leadership And The Passage Of The No Child Left Behind Act, Ethan L. Mcwilliams
The Rise And Fall Of America's Education President : George W. Bush's Political Leadership And The Passage Of The No Child Left Behind Act, Ethan L. Mcwilliams
Honors Theses
On January 8, 2002, President George W. Bush proudly signed the "No Child Left Behind Act," thus ensuring that H.R. 1 became Public Law 107-110. During the signing ceremony, the President triumphantly proclaimed that, "as of this hour, America's schools will be on a new path of reform, and a new path of results."1 The legislation, which totaled more than six hundred pages, was intended to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and expand its aim according to four central principles: accountability for results; state and local flexibility; focusing resources on successful methods; and expanding choice? Although substantively notable …
The Thou Shalts Of Journalism: A Study Of The Significance Of Ethics Codes As They Correlate To The Journalistic Values Of Objectivity And Detachment And The Practice Of Public Journalism By Mississippi Newspapers, Kimberly Anne Breaux
Honors Theses
Ethics arguably are a nexus to good journalism; thus, without a clearly-mandated ethics code that helps one differentiate between objectivity and bias as well as detachment and empathy, media practitioners fail in their basic journalistic obligation to providing readers with the information that they need to live well-informed, free, and self-governing lives. Furthermore, objectivity and detachment are two journalistic elements under constant public scrutiny for their surfeit of related ethical faux pas committed regularly by American journalists. Particularly in the practice of public journalism- a method for framing stories that is based on increased community input and unconventional techniques to …

An Investigation Of Communications Laws And The Mississippi Business Manager, Melissa Ann King
Honors Theses
This study sought to determine if Mississippi business managers were versed in maintaining a legal workplace with their knowledge of 15 major United States laws relating specifically to the area of business communication. It also sought to gather relevant information based upon personal views related to two critical communications laws; the Civil Rights Act of 1964- Title VII Equal Employment Opportunity and the Age Discrimination Act of 1967. The study went on to determine if the 15 laws were actually being used in the workplace by Mississippi business managers. After proper approval by the University of Mississippi Office of Research …
The Revenge Of The Past: Ethnic Nationalism, Soviet Nationalities Policies, And The Collapse Of The Ussr, Steven Montgomery Wheat
The Revenge Of The Past: Ethnic Nationalism, Soviet Nationalities Policies, And The Collapse Of The Ussr, Steven Montgomery Wheat
Honors Theses
The Soviet Union was a vast empire that included scores of ethnic minority groups, From its earliest days, the Soviet government was compelled to find creative ways to address the concerns of these various groups while remaining true to its ideological rhetoric. This paper outlines many of the governmental programs that aimed to appease minority groups through cultural, linguistic, and in some cases, administrative autonomy. The numerous instances in Soviet history during which these privileges were curtailed are also included. In sum, this paper presents a chronological review of the various, often contradictory, nationalities policies adopted in the Soviet Union …
The Limits Of Laïcité: Islam And The Headscarf Issue In France, Lindsay Blaire Beeman
The Limits Of Laïcité: Islam And The Headscarf Issue In France, Lindsay Blaire Beeman
Honors Theses
Laicite is the term given to France’s complex policy of separation between church and state. Developing out of a long and tumultuous religious history, laicite set out to resolve the problems that the French state had with religion by eliminating its presence in the public sphere. At its inception, the policy did not have clearly stated objectives. As a result, it was not equally applied and many problems ensued. The most recent debacle involving the application of laicite was Vaffaire dii foulard, or headscarf affair. Citing the principle of laicite, numerous teachers and principals in French schools required Muslim students …
Elusive Peace: A Comparative Analysis Of Civil Wars And Conflict Resolution In El Salvador And Colombia, Jessica Bryant
Elusive Peace: A Comparative Analysis Of Civil Wars And Conflict Resolution In El Salvador And Colombia, Jessica Bryant
Honors Theses
This study compares the historical contexts of the rise of civil wars and their modem trajectories in Colombia and El Salvador. Through an analysis of the successful negotiation of peace in the Salvadoran case via a United Nations peacekeeping mission, it makes conclusions about the relevancy of such an operation for obtaining peace in Colombia. After a brief discussion of the United Nations evolving peacekeeping mandate and recent literature about this type of peace negotiation, this thesis examines each country’s history and its war’s termination (in the case of El Salvador) and transformation (in the case of Colombia). Recent literature …
The Post-Cold War Security Dialogue, Melanie Collins
The Post-Cold War Security Dialogue, Melanie Collins
Honors Theses
This paper attempts to explore the relevance of new security concerns in the post Cold War security dialogue. This project is split in to two parts. The first part is a brief summary of what have been termed new security concerns. The second part is an empirical analysis of whether these security concerns have made it out of academic discussion and in to the mass media and political dialogue. This was determined via two sources: The New York Times and Presidential State of the Union Addresses from 1949 - 2007. Using The New York Times, the time periods 1980-1985, 1990-1995, …
Stopping The Flood Of Denglish: The Difficult Dilemma Faced By German Language Organizations In Modern-Day Germany, Julianne Kay Lofton
Stopping The Flood Of Denglish: The Difficult Dilemma Faced By German Language Organizations In Modern-Day Germany, Julianne Kay Lofton
Honors Theses
In this study I examined the reactions of official and independent German language organizations to the influx of Denglish, which is a hybrid mix of German and English, and Anglicisms. The independent language organizations tend to be more open in opposing these linguistic influences, and often want strict language protection laws like those in France and Poland. I hypothesized that Germany’s Nazi past has led to a general lack of patriotism and nationalism in Germany, which has affected their language policy and allowed Germany to be overrun by Denglish and Anglicized words and phrases. Germany is experiencing a renewal of …
Human Rights And United States Foreign Policy: Morality Vs. Self-Interest, Christopher Franklin Tatum
Human Rights And United States Foreign Policy: Morality Vs. Self-Interest, Christopher Franklin Tatum
Honors Theses
This thesis has set out to explore the role that human rights considerations play in United States foreign policy, if any. Has this role changed over time, as new circumstances arise, or has it been consistent throughout the twentieth (and twenty-first, to this point) century? What are the inherent tensions in policy formation that compete when discussing human rights? In answering this question, three main areas of influence on foreign policy were consulted: domestic political factors, geopolitical factors, and economic factors. In researching this thesis, I have consulted several different kinds of sources, including scholarly articles, books, primary documents in …
