Designing A General Education Course On The Societal Impacts Of Artificial Intelligence, Vincent Rollins May 2019

Designing A General Education Course On The Societal Impacts Of Artificial Intelligence, Vincent Rollins

Honors Theses

Most colleges, including UTC, already offer an artificial intelligence course (CPSC 4440) as part of their computer science curricula. Such courses are meant to explain the technology behind these elaborate systems, but these courses often neglect extensive coverage of the real-world impacts of the technology itself. UTC also offers a course entitled “Ethical and Social Issues in Computing” that does convey the importance behind the advances of computer technology and its impacts, but this course is practically available only to computer science majors. There is no generalized and widely available course that covers the technological, economic, cultural, philosophical/theological, and ethical …

The Legal Status Of Personhood In The Wake Of Genetic Editing, Tessa C. Ross May 2019

The Legal Status Of Personhood In The Wake Of Genetic Editing, Tessa C. Ross

Honors Theses

Policies and laws regarding human health require continual examination as technologies improve, and genetic editing technologies that have the ability to modify a person’s DNA are unquestionably relevant to examine. The technologies most intriguing to investigate are those with the ability to directly edit the nuclear genes (segments of DNA within the nucleus of cells) through techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9 and Cpf1. This study intends to answer the questions of how should policy develop to accommodate for the improving medical technology of genetic editing and how could genetic editing technologies affect the legal status of personhood for the purposes of …

The Antifungal Occidiofungin Disrupts Morphological Switching In The Polymorphic Fungus Candida Albicans, Aaron Albee May 2019

The Antifungal Occidiofungin Disrupts Morphological Switching In The Polymorphic Fungus Candida Albicans, Aaron Albee

Honors Theses

Occidiofungin is a natural antifungal compound produced by Burkholderia contaminans MS14. Prior work has been shown occidiofungin to be effective against Candida albicans in its nonpathogenic yeast form. However, C. albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that requires a morphogenic switch to a filamentous form to cause disease. As previous work focusing on the non-pathogenic form has shown distinct biochemical and morphological changes with occidiofungin exposure, I hypothesis that the filamentous form of this fungi will also undergo identifiable changes that can be characterized. To this end, cells induced to undergo morphological switching in the presence of occidiofungin were analyzed by …

Towards A Metaethics Grounded In A Simplified Process Metaphysics, Benjamin Kromann May 2019

Towards A Metaethics Grounded In A Simplified Process Metaphysics, Benjamin Kromann

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to not only illustrate a metaphysical position, but also explore a possible metaethical scheme which can be grounded therein. First is offered an outline of the core principles of Process metaphysics. Then the author differentiates their own take on these principles, bringing into dialogue several other philosophers, both within the tradition of Process philosophy and outside of it. Next is explored the way in which this scheme can inform issues in other domains of inquiry relevant to the final issue being addressed, which is metaethics. Though it is found that this scheme can support at least a …

Methods Of Domination: Towards A Theory Of Domestic Colonialism In Khaled Hosseini’S The Kite Runner, Lauren E. Duke

Honors Theses

While the canon of post-colonial literature has been heavily researched, little scholarship can be found connecting post-colonial theory to instances of colonial tropes within autonomous nations, an event which may be described as “domestic colonialism.” This thesis will examine Khaled Hosseini’s work, The Kite Runner (2003), as a modern work of post-colonial literature, as it reveals the methods of domination present in 20th century Afghanistan. I will evaluate the text based on the definitions of traditional settler colonialism and anthropoligal classifications of intergroup domination in order to highlight the narrative of domestic colonialism that is present within the text. Through …

The Acute Effects Of Artificially-Sweetened Beverages On Cardiovascular Health, Adria Mulligan May 2019

Honors Theses

Costa Rican coffee has had a long reputation for being some of the most flavorful coffee on the planet. However, it took many years for Costa Rica to establish itself as a coffee producing country, and many more years to develop sustainable coffee-growing systems. Out of the ruins of exploitation by the United Fruit Company, Costa Rica has built up a booming and sustainable agritourism industry, and coffee has played an integral role in its success. While there are many benefits and drawbacks to agritourism, Costa Rican farmers have managed to make every step of coffee production, from growing to …

Poster, Expanded, Lynnae Strait Apr 2019

Poster, Expanded, Lynnae Strait

Honors Theses

The poster is a fundamental part of graphic design that has existed since the 1800s. Throughout the years, its purposes and aesthetics have changed, but its format has adapted very little. This thesis project sought to define the traditional format of the poster, and then challenge the definition to expand the audience’s understanding of what a poster is and isn’t. This project’s primary goal was not to create aesthetically unique poster, but to create a poster that redefined the format—which would likely result in the achievement of the former goal as well.

The definition was derived by viewing and understanding …

Deducing The Reproductive, Behavioral, And Learning Effects Of Developmental Cannabinoid Exposure In Zebrafish, Marisa L. Kutchma

Honors Theses

With the spreading legalization of marijuana, it is important to investigate the effects of two of its active ingredients—Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC and CBD differ in that THC exerts psychoactive effects, while CBD does not. Thus, CBD is renowned for its analgesic effects in treating a variety of ailments, for example, childhood drug-resistant epilepsy. In addition, there is an increase in reports of prenatal CBD usage. As it is increasingly used, research has fallen far behind the proliferation of CBD and more needs to be done, particularly in the developmental realm. This study utilizes a developmental origins of …

The Meaning Of Song Type: Exploring Behavioral Responses Of Field Sparrows To Three Simple Song Types, Eliza Foli Apr 2019

The Meaning Of Song Type: Exploring Behavioral Responses Of Field Sparrows To Three Simple Song Types, Eliza Foli

Honors Theses

The frequency, rate, and overall quality of a male’s song may indicate the singer’s physical quality, either as a threat or as a potential mate, and are used for species recognition. However, the degree to which a song must differ acoustically to communicate different information about the singer remains unclear. Analysis of male field sparrow simple song recorded in southwest Michigan revealed three structurally distinct clusters of simple song that differ in frequency characteristics. We hypothesize that songs in each cluster convey information about the singer and that receivers respond more strongly to songs more similar to their own song. …

Time Course Effects Of Repetitive Social Defeat Stress On A Prefrontal Cortex-Dependent Cognitive Flexibility Task, Shaffer Hannah

Honors Theses

Stress is known to change the structure and function of the brain in animals and humans as well as their behavior. It has a high correlation with the development of psychiatric disorders as well. We looked to investigate how repetitive intermittent social defeat stress using the resident-intruder paradigm in rats affected a cognitive flexibility task. The task used was a set-shifting protocol known to be associated with the function of the prefrontal cortex. Measurements on the task were taken intermittently between social stress sessions to determine short-term effects and 10 days after the last social stress session to measure long …

The Correlation Between The Microbiome And Neurodegenerative Disorders Such As Alzheimer Disease, Aurora Mokris Apr 2019

The Correlation Between The Microbiome And Neurodegenerative Disorders Such As Alzheimer Disease, Aurora Mokris

Honors Theses

Recent studies suggest that there are 1.3 times as many microbial cells as human cells in the body (Abbot, 2016). Another study claims that the combined genomes of this microbiota is 150 times that of the human genome (Zhuang & Shen, 2018). If you have ever had the feeling that you are not alone in an empty room you are most certainly correct. Your body is teeming with millions of organisms living in mutualistic symbiosis with you and surrounding microbes, but at times, this seemingly harmonious relationship can be disturbed, resulting in serious physical and psychological changes to the human …

Neuronal And Behavioral Response Relationships In Virgin Females Of Acheta Domesticus, Brandon Shin Apr 2019

Neuronal And Behavioral Response Relationships In Virgin Females Of Acheta Domesticus, Brandon Shin

Honors Theses

Animals that communicate acoustically serve as models for investigating how organisms respond to sound. For instance, in field crickets, females exhibit phonotaxis (directed movement towards the sound's source) to calls with a specific frequency, intensity, and syllable period (SP) - the time between the beginning of one sound pulse and the beginning of another within the same chirp. Additionally, auditory neurons in females produce action potentials in direct response to the sound pulses of a male 's call. A previous study on the species Gryllus bimaculatus demonstrated a relationship between an individual female's behavioral and neuronal responses; however, no such …

Reality Versus Fantasy: An Analysis Of Emergency Management Practices Portrayed In Disaster Movies, Lisa Wier Apr 2019

Reality Versus Fantasy: An Analysis Of Emergency Management Practices Portrayed In Disaster Movies, Lisa Wier

Honors Theses

In Hollywood, disaster films are often highly fictionalized for entertainment purposes. They often misrepresent disaster protection, mitigation, response, and overall preparedness. The films Jurassic World (2015), San Andreas (2015), and Your Name (2016) misrepresent mass island evacuation and response, earthquake preparedness and mitigation, and near-Earth impacts (NEOs) and protection respectfully. However, the disasters exaggerated are based upon real hazards that emergency management officials must plan for. The disasters portrayed are analyzed with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Preparedness Goal and its core capabilities to demonstrate effective strategies for the incidents, and proper identification of the discrepancies between disaster …

Manipulating Light: Creating A Biomimetic Photonic Crystal Material Inspired By The Chameleon, Love L. Richburg

Honors Theses

The purpose of this project is to create a chameleon-inspired biomimetic material using guanine crystals and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to form a tunable photonic crystal and then characterize the material. The method for developing this material is to first synthesize a photonic crystal made of a guanine microsphere lattice. Then embed the guanine lattice in PDMS. Since PDMS is an elastomer, it can be stretched to adjust the spacing between the guanine crystals. This should allow for the photonic crystal to be adjusted similarly to the way that the chameleon adjusts the photonic crystal in its skin by changing the spacing …
