Healing Hands--Soothing Sounds: The Effects Of Tactile And Auditory Stimulation On Nicu Patients, Catherine M. Gillotti

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between verbal and tactile stimulations from medical and non-medical care providers to premature infants in an NICU, and the physiological reactions of the infants to the stimulations, as well as their recovery. Twenty-five premature infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit were included in the study. Independent variables included the number of times a care provider talked to or over the infant both with and without touch; the total number of touches in an interaction; the tactile interaction time; and the total interaction time. Dependent variables included the heart …

An Evaluation Of Motor-Based Preconscious Detection In A Numerical Target Search Task, Vance F. Gilstrap Jan 1992

An Evaluation Of Motor-Based Preconscious Detection In A Numerical Target Search Task, Vance F. Gilstrap

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Traditional information processing theories allow little room for unconscious mental activity. However, a large and growing body of research has been performed in the area of information processing without awareness. Research investigating target detection tasks reveals that perception of targets in a high-load task is a multi-stage, or feature integration process. A multi-stage process indicates that some processing may occur before conscious awareness. Research directed at motor indicants of preconscious processing indicates subjects may indeed process information in a visual target search task prior to consciously discovering the target. Experiments which have looked at rythmic motor responses, such as key …

The Effect Of Evaluator Intervention, Task Structure And User Experience On The Subjective Evaluation Of Software Usability, Joseph E. Held Jan 1992

The Effect Of Evaluator Intervention, Task Structure And User Experience On The Subjective Evaluation Of Software Usability, Joseph E. Held

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of usability testing techniques of task structure, evaluator intervention and user experience on the subjective evaluation of software usability. Twenty three (23) experienced word processing software users and 23 novices participated in 2 two-hour sessions. In the first session, users learned to use a word processing software package. In the second session, users performed tasks using the software, and afterwards completed a usability questionnaire. During the sessions, half of the users participated in a structured testing scenario (Standard Laboratory), and the others in a loosely structured scenario (Guided Exploration). For one half of the users …

Histos: The Development And Implementation Of A Biological Lab Program, Robert J. Guizzo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project addresses those heretofore limited experiments and laboratory activities associated with a secondary biology course having a core emphasis on human anatomy and physiology. Such a course has been offered at Oakwood High School for nearly two decades. It offers labs to students in two distinct, yet related areas. Anatomy labs provide students with a wide variety of dissectable materials. Whole specimens as well as individual organs are examined and analyzed. In association with lectures, demonstrations, and AV presentations, these labs present a series of unique and critical opportunities in the study of human macroscopic structure. Physiology labs center …

An Exploratory Evaluation Of The Effects Of Stroop Modulation Upon The Perception Of Relative Frequency, Gabriel Gonsalves-Sosa Jan 1991

An Exploratory Evaluation Of The Effects Of Stroop Modulation Upon The Perception Of Relative Frequency, Gabriel Gonsalves-Sosa

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The effects of congruency, target percentage and target location on judgments of relative frequency were examined. A stimulus consisted of a set of 24 words ("ABOVE"/"BELOW") with asterisks located either on top or underneath the words. The stimulus sets were presented on a computer monitor for 1.50 seconds. Subjects had to judge the frequency of their target (asterisks-above or asterisks-below) at the end of each trial. Forty-eight of the trials were 100% congruent (word and asterisk location with relation to the word indicated same location) and 48 of the trials were 50% congruent and 50% non-congruent. The results indicated that …
