A Brief Values-Based Intervention For Increasing Distress Tolerance In Overcontrol, Katherine Hyde Brott
A Brief Values-Based Intervention For Increasing Distress Tolerance In Overcontrol, Katherine Hyde Brott
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Overcontrol is a transdiagnostic personality syndrome underlying difficult-to-treat psychopathology. Current treatments options are limited, and those that do exist are both cost- and time-prohibitive. Brief interventions are one pathway to improving the care of people with overcontrol. This study had two major aims: (1) evaluate a brief values-based intervention to increase distress tolerance in people with overcontrol and (2) examine the correlates of overcontrol using a novel, theoretically derived transdiagnostic measure of overcontrol. Participants (n = 177) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: values clarification only, linking values to emotion, or a control condition. They then completed a …
Understanding The Emergence Of Self-Determination In Children With Disabilities Through Family Experiences In Early Childhood: A Qualitative Study, Karen K. Lange
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract A person’s ability to be self-determined begins to develop through the earliest interactions in life within the context of the family and caregiving environments. This qualitative phenomenological study of the experiences of eight parents representing seven families of young children explored how families promote their children’s early development of the skills, abilities, and attitudes of self-determination. The critical importance of the family context for the promotion of self-determination in young children is seen in the four themes that emerged from the experiences shared by these families. (1) The family context is transformed by a child with a disability, changing …
Intellectual Humility And The Role Of Feedback On Children’S Intellectual Humility Expression, Christina M. Barnes
Intellectual Humility And The Role Of Feedback On Children’S Intellectual Humility Expression, Christina M. Barnes
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Intellectual Humility (IH) is the ability to recognize, acknowledge, and act, on the fallibility of one’s own knowledge (Porter et al., 2021). IH is associated with many positive outcomes including intellectual curiosity, tenacity, open-mindedness, and mastery behaviors (Leary, 2018; Porter & Schuman, 2017, Porter et al., 2020) leading some to believe IH is the promotion of IH as the next great educational virtue. Some scholars argue however, that too much IH can lead to Intellectual Servility which is associated with negative outcomes such as maladaptive perfectionism, need for cognitive closure, and less willingness to change a belief when presented with …
Breaking The Silence: Exploring The Impact Of Supervisor Vulnerability On Menstrual Disclosures At Work, Marilla Hayman
Breaking The Silence: Exploring The Impact Of Supervisor Vulnerability On Menstrual Disclosures At Work, Marilla Hayman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Management research has traditionally overlooked the significance of the human body in the workplace. However, recent recognition of organizational body work has prompted the examination of biological processes such as pregnancy and breastfeeding. Menstruation, however, has received little attention, despite the challenges faced by menstruating employees. The invisibility and silence around menstruation at work hinders managers' understanding of employee needs and prevents employees from accessing needed accommodations. An important first step in remedying this problem is understanding the factors influencing employees to disclose their menstrual symptoms and seek support. Bringing together theories of organizational body work and concealable stigmas, this …
My Identity Blew Up On Tiktok: Exploring Content Creators And The Transparasocial Relationship, Russell Garret Harger
My Identity Blew Up On Tiktok: Exploring Content Creators And The Transparasocial Relationship, Russell Garret Harger
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated transparasocial relationships as they relate to identity management for content creators. Unlike traditional parasocial relationships, transparasocial relationships indicate high levels of interactivity between the creator and audience members. This study investigates how this interactivity affects the identity of the creators, specifically content creators on TikTok. A diverse set of 21 creators were reached out to and interviewed in a semi-structured respondent style over videoconference calls. Thematic analysis was conducted to discover how these creators are managing their identities within the context of their roles as content creators. A particular interest was taken to see if there were …
To Each Their Own: The Relationship Among Regret, Habits, And Academic Performance In College Students, Chandler Ann Findley
To Each Their Own: The Relationship Among Regret, Habits, And Academic Performance In College Students, Chandler Ann Findley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The extant literature on regret as motivation for behavior presents inconclusive results, collectively. While it has often been agreed that regret motivates reparative action, most studies from the past 14 years indicate that regret may motivate either detrimental actions or, more commonly, no action at all. There also appears to be no published research about college students’ academic regrets or how these regrets affect their classroom behaviors and performance. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to understand if college students regret their academic habits, what those habits are, and how their regrets and habits contribute to their academic performance over the course …
Measurement Reliability For Intentions To Change Behavior, Emily Schlichtig
Measurement Reliability For Intentions To Change Behavior, Emily Schlichtig
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
It is common for researchers to ask participants to associate probabilities with words, often using tools like the Likert scale to measure behavioral intentions and attitudes. However, it remains unclear what specific probabilities participants assign to the response options on a Likert scale, how much variation exists across these options, and whether these probabilities differ across various behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to explore the numeric probabilities that participants associate with different Likert scale points, to understand their perception of the variation at each point, and to compare these perceptions across three behaviors: eating more vegetables, exercising more, …
A Two-Part Validation Study Of The Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale, Henrietta Kadi Tettey-Tawiah
A Two-Part Validation Study Of The Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale, Henrietta Kadi Tettey-Tawiah
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A number of existing studies indicate that there is some correlation between pride and shame and various behavioral health outcomes like anxiety, depression, and self-harm in the general population. Research also confirms that this relationship is true among sexual minorities as well. This study sets itself up to interrogate this assertion vis-à-vis sexual minority adolescents (SMAs). Consequently, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and differential item functioning (DIF) detection analysis were performed on the 35-item Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale (SMIES) for SMAs. A tree-based modeling technique, specifically conditional inference trees (CIT), was then employed to explore and make predictions about the …
Sparse Neural Network To Enhance Performance Under Limited Parameter Constraints., Nailah Rawnaq
Sparse Neural Network To Enhance Performance Under Limited Parameter Constraints., Nailah Rawnaq
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decade, the widespread adoption of deep neural networks has been a breakthrough driven by significant computational advancements. Additionally, the number of parameters of those models is exponentially increasing for performing complex tasks and achieving better performance. However, in most practical cases, often there are constraints in the number of parameters due to limited resources in storage size and computational cost. Network pruning can lead to an optimal solution to this problem. In this thesis, I present supporting evidence to the hypothesis that higher sparsity leads to better performance for a convolution-based neural network. I perform performance studies …

Previous research has indicated that identity is social in nature and that close relationships strengthen sense of identity, but details of this relationship are not well understood. Self-disclosure is a vital part of close relationships; thus, the present research sought to understand how talking about oneself is at play in the relation between relationship closeness and identity. In this study, 314 emerging adults (157 dyads; Mage = 19.2) engaged in an in-person interaction with either a close other or a stranger and, within this interaction, were assigned to engage in self-disclosure or a control task. Even though the closer participants …
Will These Feelings Last Forever? Examining The Relationship Between The Longevity Belief About Emotion And Avoidance, Elise Warner
Will These Feelings Last Forever? Examining The Relationship Between The Longevity Belief About Emotion And Avoidance, Elise Warner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that the belief that emotions last for long periods of time is associated with greater self-reported distress intolerance and greater experiential avoidance (Warner, 2022), with limited research examining the causal link between the longevity belief and experiential avoidance. Individuals high in emotional reactivity may tend to hold greater longevity beliefs (Veilleux et al., 2019), with high emotional reactivity linked to both greater experiential avoidance and distress intolerance (Bruns et al., 2019). Thus, the aim of the current study was to examine the influence of the longevity belief about emotions on behavioral avoidance in individuals high in emotional reactivity. …

Effects Of Measurement Error In Student Pre-Post Test Score On The Recovery Of The Estimates Of Teachers Value-Added Scores, Merlin J. Kamgue
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract Background: Value-added models (VAMs) are statistical tools used to gauge a teacher’s impact on student performance by analyzing standardized test scores. These models project students’ future performance based on past scores and compare the projection to actual outcomes, accounting for differences in student backgrounds. However, the standard error of measurement (SEM) inherent in all measurement tools is often overlooked in VAMs. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to investigate the impact of test reliability on teacher and school score estimates within a Bayesian framework. We will precisely manipulate the reliability of standardized tests by adjusting the standard error of …

To Be Framed: Investigating The Influence Of American Media Frames On Gun Control, William C. Chamblee
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Gun control may be one of the most polarizing political issues facing America today. While there are many factors that contribute to gun control controversy, one may be how it is framed by news organizations. Research suggests that the emergence of partisan news media, differing levels of issue salience, and the public’s increased willingness to selectively expose could widen the gap between both Republicans and Democrats through their opinions on the issue of gun control, causing polarization. Using a survey, this study found that both Republicans and Democrats are likely to selectively expose to partisan media outlets and that a …
Consumer Willingness To Pay For Food Products Displaying A Black-Owned Production Label, Logan Gage Moss
Consumer Willingness To Pay For Food Products Displaying A Black-Owned Production Label, Logan Gage Moss
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Black and African Americans have faced historic underrepresentation in the agri-food system (Horst & Marion, 2019). Systemic inequities have hindered food entrepreneurs and economic growth within this community. Recent diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives highlight societal concerns about these imbalances (Darity, 2024). Some consumers aim to address this underrepresentation by purchasing products from Black entrepreneurs, but this requires effective communication, which can increase marketing expenses and risks for producers. However, highlighting Black-owned food products may enhance outcomes for this marginalized community. Credence attributes like Black ownership cannot be evaluated even after consumption, unlike traits such as taste and quality. …

Diversity Equity And Inclusion Education: An Evaluation Of The Safe Zone Allies Program, Shannon E. Hart
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion gained unprecedented popularity from 2019 to 2022. The tide turned in 2023, and Anti-DEI legislation continues to gain momentum nationwide. This backlash may be warranted, as research demonstrates that DEI can backfire. DEI programs remain unregulated, understudied, and often paradoxically under-supported despite their potential to catalyze positive social change. Two studies were conducted to begin creating standardized, accessible, and evidence-based DEI best practices. Safe Zone Allies, a LGBTQIA+ specific DEI program was selected for program review because; (a) it was not developed hastily, (b) it was not siloed, and (c) the curriculum is evidence-based. The first …
