Tactile Feedback For A Force-Reflecting Haptic Display, Christopher John Hasser Jan 1995

Tactile Feedback For A Force-Reflecting Haptic Display, Christopher John Hasser

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Haptic feedback devices for virtual reality and telerobotics applications reproduce physical sensations to a human operator who interacts with a virtual or remote environment. Motors or other actuators reflect forces of interaction to the arms, hands, and fingers of the user. Tactile feedback devices stimulate the cutaneous tactile sense either to mimic skin touches in the reflected environment or to give a cue to the operator that he or she is encountering virtual forces. Real manipulation and haptic exploration rely on the seamless integration of the cutaneous tactile and force subcomponents of the sense of touch. Any human interface that …

The Ultrasonic Degassing Of Jet Fuel To Reduce Deposition, Marc A. Hanchak Jan 1995

The Ultrasonic Degassing Of Jet Fuel To Reduce Deposition, Marc A. Hanchak

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Military and commercial aircraft use jet fuel as a heat sink to cool various engine and airframe components. As the fuel is thermally stressed, it forms deposits which can obstruct the flow of the fuel. Deposition occurs in devices vital to aircraft operation such as fuel injectors, spray bars, augmentors, and actuators. The replacement or repair of these fouled components is very costly and, if ignored, can be destructive to the fuel system. To avoid the buildup of deposits, the removal of dissolved oxygen from the fuel is desirable since previous experimentation has shown that dissolved oxygen is responsible for …

Cellular And Molecular Aspects Of Limb Regeneration In Urodele Amphibians, Charles Henry Washabaugh Jan 1994

Cellular And Molecular Aspects Of Limb Regeneration In Urodele Amphibians, Charles Henry Washabaugh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The newt, Notophthalmus viridescens, and the Mexican axolotl, Amblystoma mexicanum, are examples of urodeles which have the unique ability to regenerate appendages as adults. Vitamin A metabolites (retinoids) have been shown to have an adverse effect upon the regeneration process by inducing abnormalities, inhibitions or proximalizations of the regenerate. Vitamin D is related to the retinoids via the molecular mechanism by which it elicits effects (the nuclear receptor). The results of the first study suggest that there is an effect by vitamin D metabolites on axolotl limb regeneration and chick limb development. The data also reports that synergistic effects exist …
