Penny For Your Thoughts: Exploring Mechanisms Linking Socioeconomic Status And Cognition, Colton Hunter May 2025

Penny For Your Thoughts: Exploring Mechanisms Linking Socioeconomic Status And Cognition, Colton Hunter

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Socioeconomic status is a complex psychological construct linked to a number of professional and personal barriers, including cognitive deficits. Throughout this dissertation, I seek to examine the mechanisms that link socioeconomic status and cognition. First, I explore potential mediators in the link between adolescent family income and cognition in adulthood, identifying education, stressful life events, inflammation, and family education expectations as significant mediators. Next, I examine the effects of writing-based stress manipulations on long-term memory and working memory, as these effects may mimic stress from financial worry. In doing so, I identify potential effects on working memory parameters. Finally, in …

Synthesis And X-Ray Characterization Of Nickel Phosphide Nanostructures For Water Oxidation, David Thompson May 2025

Synthesis And X-Ray Characterization Of Nickel Phosphide Nanostructures For Water Oxidation, David Thompson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The pursuit of earth-abundant 3d transition metal catalysts for alkaline water electrolysis remains an active area of research. While NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDH) are currently the most active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), doping Ni-based catalysts with phosphorus to form Ni metal phosphides has emerged as a promising alternative. However, the complex crystalline and amorphous phases of NiPx have hindered their characterization, and the OER mechanism and origin of activity remain unclear. This dissertation aims to elucidate the synthesis, OER performance, and in situ reconstruction of amorphous NiPx-based nanomaterials, with a focus on in …

Constraining Neutron Star Kicks Through Gravitational Wave Detection, James Phillips May 2025

Constraining Neutron Star Kicks Through Gravitational Wave Detection, James Phillips

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Neutron stars have, on average, much higher proper motions than those of hot and bright O and B type main sequence stars. Thus, it is widely suspected that asymmetries in core-collapse supernovae provide a substantial kick to these compact objects at birth. Gen- eral Relativity predicts that such supernova asymmetries will generate bursts of gravitational radiation, though no such burst has been yet detected. Here we argue that the polarization amplitudes of those gravitational waves can be used to calculate the kicks imparted on that nascent neutron star. We begin by reviewing the evidence for natal kicks, then we describe …

Analog Low Dropout Regulator Design Within A 12nm Finfet Node, Harshdeep Singh May 2025

Analog Low Dropout Regulator Design Within A 12nm Finfet Node, Harshdeep Singh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modern ICs require the use of multiple voltage regulators to regulate power, this creates the need for analog low dropout regulator (LDO) designs in more advanced nodes such as for the 12nm FinFET process. Analog design is particularly challenging in FinFET processes due to a variety of factors, such as quantized parameters, large parasitic values and length of diffusion effects. An analog LDO was chosen for its improved power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) over digital and hybrid approach which is a key metric for voltage sensitive applications. The LDO was designed through an iterative approach to address the difficulty of …

A Robust Rf Fingerprinting Approach Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks, Jozef Dusenka May 2025

A Robust Rf Fingerprinting Approach Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks, Jozef Dusenka

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Radio frequency (RF) fingerprints, caused by unique imperfections in communication hardware, offer a promising solution for zero-trust security. However, existing RF fingerprinting techniques, which aim to extract these signatures from transmitters to uniquely identify devices, often struggle with robustness in the face of temporal and spatial variations in real-world, time-varying wireless environments. For example, a neural network trained on RF signals collected on Day 1 can experience a significant performance drop when tested with data from Day 2.

To address this challenge, we propose a novel, robust RF fingerprinting method based on Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs). Rather than training the …

Insights From Automated Mineralogic Analysis Of Modern Sand, Quinten Jones May 2025

Insights From Automated Mineralogic Analysis Of Modern Sand, Quinten Jones

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Methods for determining and categorizing the modal compositions of sand and sandstone have long been a subject of debate in the field of sedimentary geology. Point counting is the most commonly used technique for determining modal compositions from petrographic slides, which are then categorized based on relative proportions of quartz, feldspar, and rock (or lithic) fragments. However, this approach fails to adequately preserve relevant textural data, such as grain size and sorting, which play an important role in diagenesis and in influencing reservoir quality. Additionally, the categorical nature of point counting results in a lack of specificity and loss of …

The Rhetorical Use Of The Lower Classes In Three Primary Accounts Of The First Crusade, John Hannon May 2025

The Rhetorical Use Of The Lower Classes In Three Primary Accounts Of The First Crusade, John Hannon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the rhetorical use of the lower classes in three primary accounts of the First Crusade: Albert of Aachen, the Gesta Francorum, and Raymond of Aguilers — specifically with an eye towards the proper maintenance of the order of society through everyone performing their assigned role. Through a close reading of these three texts this study demonstrates how the three authors engage with and uphold versions of the idealized three orders model of medieval society. Though there is nuance between each source, broadly, each of the authors presents the lower classes as a force that needs to …

Atomic Level Characterization For The Transport Cycle Conformational Pathways Of Multidrug Resistance Protein 1 (Mrp1), Samuel Wamwere Mwatha May 2025

Atomic Level Characterization For The Transport Cycle Conformational Pathways Of Multidrug Resistance Protein 1 (Mrp1), Samuel Wamwere Mwatha

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 (MRP1/ABCC1) is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter that mediates the cellular efflux of endogenous and xenobiotic substrates, including therapeutic drugs. Its overexpression is a major contributor to multidrug resistance in cancer, which tends to result in negative clinical results. Even with considerable progress made in structural biology, the intricate details of how membrane lipid composition affects the conformational changes and functional switches of MRP1 still lack explanation.

This thesis employs long-timescale, all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the influence of various lipids on MRP1 lipid bilayer environments. Both inward-facing and outward-facing conformations of MRP1 …

Rotation Errors Due To Field Quantization For Simultaneously Driven Atoms, Hunter Lindemann May 2025

Rotation Errors Due To Field Quantization For Simultaneously Driven Atoms, Hunter Lindemann

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

If we want to physically implement qubits by using two level atoms within a cavity, then certain single-qubit gates (such as the X-gate) can be performed by bathing the atoms in an electromagnetic field from a laser. If the average photon count n̄ of the field greatly exceeds the number of N qubits, then the slight fluctuations of the field's phase and amplitude are mostly negligible. However, such a strong field might require more energy than what is desirable for the setup. If a weaker field is used in which phase and amplitude fluctuations might be noticeable, then the …

Exploring 2slgbtqia+ Parenting In Northwest Arkansas, Bailey Mason

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the U.S. Census Bureau first published data on “same-sex” households in 2011, research has repeatedly indicated the majority of 2SLGBTQIA+ parents (here on referred to as “queer parents”) reside outside of major cities in heavily populated regions of the country. However, due to widespread metronormative narratives about the queer experience, the experiences of queer parents in less-populated regions are rarely studied. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of queer parents in Northwest Arkansas, a region of the politically and religiously conservative Southern U.S. with areas both urban and rural. Applying grounded theory and drawing from queer theory to …

Influence Of Smartphone Notifications On Behavior And Eye Movement Parameters Of Emotional Attention, Joshua Daniel Upshaw May 2025

Influence Of Smartphone Notifications On Behavior And Eye Movement Parameters Of Emotional Attention, Joshua Daniel Upshaw

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how smartphone notifications interact with emotional facial expressions to influence behavioral and physiological eye movement parameters of attentional orientation. Using a dot-probe paradigm, participants viewed mixed emotional face pairs (angry, happy, or neutral) following an auditory stimulus (smartphone notifications, control tones, or silence). Angry faces elicited greater behavioral accuracy and delayed initial fixations, consistent with heightened threat-related attentional engagement. Notifications disrupted attentional stability, reflected in increased fixations and pupil size variability. The combined effect of smartphone notifications preceding angry faces intensified attentional modulation—evidenced by slower responses, increased blinking, greater pupil constriction, less pupil variability, and faster initial …

Developing Custom Fertilizer Strategies Recirculating Hydroponic Systems, Joshua Bryan Tebow May 2025

Developing Custom Fertilizer Strategies Recirculating Hydroponic Systems, Joshua Bryan Tebow

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hydroponic systems recirculate nutrient solution to reduce the amount of water used in leafy green production. However, the rootzone of the nutrient solution is complex and influenced by interacting factors such as plant uptake demand, irrigation water quality, supplied fertilizer salts and nutrient concentrations, environmental conditions, and injection of mineral acids/bases to control solution pH. A common strategy for managing nutrients in commercial production is to select a hydroponic solution formulation (i.e. recipe) to supply and maintain a target pH and electrical conductivity (EC) in the recirculating solution over time by automatic injection of mineral acids/bases and concentrated fertilizer stock …

Examining Stable Isotope Variation Of Herbivores In South Luangwa Valley In The Context Of Anthropogenic Influences, Taylor Hubbard May 2025

Examining Stable Isotope Variation Of Herbivores In South Luangwa Valley In The Context Of Anthropogenic Influences, Taylor Hubbard

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Stable isotopes are an effective tool for inferring mammalian behavior. Though there are multiple factors that can influence mammalian diets, anthropogenic influence is one that is often overlooked. For example, it is important to consider how wildlife living in areas where there are frequent, documented human-wildlife interactions will modify behavior. National Parks (NPs) are a great example of this because of the common misconception that since there are protections in place, that means it is devoid of anthropogenic influence. South Luangwa National Park contradicts this misconception. Though there are protections for wildlife in place within the park, it is unfenced …

Male And Female Contributions To Sexual Dimorphism, Catherine L.W. Clayton May 2025

Male And Female Contributions To Sexual Dimorphism, Catherine L.W. Clayton

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since Darwin, the evolution of sexual dimorphism connects to different evolutionary mechanisms reflecting both natural selection and sexual selection. In primates, body size dimorphism has been attributed to multiple factors, including sexual selection, fecundity selection, ecological selection, and other factors. In contrast, canine tooth size dimorphism has been primarily associated with sexual selection in males with minor change in females, with other factors playing only a secondary role. This suggests that the degree to which body size dimorphism and canine size dimorphism covary, controlling for phylogeny, should reflect the strength of sexual selection. Conversely, the magnitude of divergence between the …

Exploring Latent Mediation Through Bayesian Regularization Methods Of Lasso, Ridge, Horseshoe, Spike-And-Slab, Ethan Harris

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Regularization is a powerful tool to combat overfitting and drive sparsity in complex models. Regularization was initially applied in regression modeling but has been increasingly utilized in structural equation modeling where its utility in identifying the essential components has helped improve modeling. As structural equation models have increased in complexity both in the number of indicators but also the number of latent factors, researchers have begun to investigate how applying Bayesian regularization to these systems can further push the limits on modeling complex models with limited sample sizes. One area where research is limited is the application of Bayesian regularizations …

Achieving Flexible Fairness And Privacy In Federated Learning, Alycia N. Carey May 2025

Achieving Flexible Fairness And Privacy In Federated Learning, Alycia N. Carey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Having access to large, high-quality datasets is crucial for training machine learning models that achieve satisfactory performance. Unfortunately, it is common that a single entity (e.g., mobile device or organization) does not have access to such datasets due to monetary or resource constraints. Traditional machine learning requires that all training data reside in a centralized location during the entire duration of model training, however, in many circumstances it is difficult or even impossible (e.g., due to governmental regulations) for multiple parties to combine their data to meet this constraint. Federated learning is a machine learning paradigm that facilitates the joint …
