Healing Hands--Soothing Sounds: The Effects Of Tactile And Auditory Stimulation On Nicu Patients, Catherine M. Gillotti
Healing Hands--Soothing Sounds: The Effects Of Tactile And Auditory Stimulation On Nicu Patients, Catherine M. Gillotti
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between verbal and tactile stimulations from medical and non-medical care providers to premature infants in an NICU, and the physiological reactions of the infants to the stimulations, as well as their recovery. Twenty-five premature infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit were included in the study. Independent variables included the number of times a care provider talked to or over the infant both with and without touch; the total number of touches in an interaction; the tactile interaction time; and the total interaction time. Dependent variables included the heart …

Histos: The Development And Implementation Of A Biological Lab Program, Robert J. Guizzo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project addresses those heretofore limited experiments and laboratory activities associated with a secondary biology course having a core emphasis on human anatomy and physiology. Such a course has been offered at Oakwood High School for nearly two decades. It offers labs to students in two distinct, yet related areas. Anatomy labs provide students with a wide variety of dissectable materials. Whole specimens as well as individual organs are examined and analyzed. In association with lectures, demonstrations, and AV presentations, these labs present a series of unique and critical opportunities in the study of human macroscopic structure. Physiology labs center …

Natural And Dfmo-Induced Transformation Of Trypanosoma Brucei: A Comparison Of Several Biochemical Parameters, Scott Michael Hartman
Natural And Dfmo-Induced Transformation Of Trypanosoma Brucei: A Comparison Of Several Biochemical Parameters, Scott Michael Hartman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Morphological and biochemical transformation of bloodstream form trypanosomes from long slender (LS) to short stumpy (SS) forms is an important event for completion of the trypanosome life cycle because it pre-adapts the trypanosome for the change of environment upon transfer to the tsetse fly vector. The drug a-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase, inhibits polyamine biosynthesis and has been found to induce the transformation from LS to SS forms. DFMO has been used routinely as an inducer of LS to SS transformation in molecular and biochemical experiments studying this transformation event. In this study we have compared natural …

Developing Phonics Knowledge In Whole Language Classrooms, Patricia Ruth Cullen Grogan
Developing Phonics Knowledge In Whole Language Classrooms, Patricia Ruth Cullen Grogan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since English is an alphabetic language, educators may agree that children need to develop basic letter/sound relationships (Anderson et al. 1985; Chall 1967, 1983). However, there are common misunderstandings about how much and what kinds of phonics knowledge and instructions are needed (Carbo 1987; Chall 1967, 1983; Genishi & Dyson 1987; Goodman 1986; Heymsfeld 1989; Routman 1988, 1991; Weaver 1988, 1990). Among these are the myths that whole language teachers do not engage in direct instruction and that children in whole language classrooms do not learn phonics (Weaver, 1990).

The Effects Of Steroid Hormones On Limb Regeneration In Urodele Amphibians, Charles Henry Washabaugh
The Effects Of Steroid Hormones On Limb Regeneration In Urodele Amphibians, Charles Henry Washabaugh
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Limb regeneration in vertebrates is a phenomenon in nature restricted to the urodele amphibians. This complicated process has many facets which are continually being studied using the latest techniques. For these studies, I first concentrated on the potential use of Tariclza gra1lulosa, a native California newt, as a suitable experimental organism and the effects of retinoic acid on its limb regeneration processes. Secondly, I have begun to elucidate the effects of vitamin D metabolites on the regeneration process in the mexican axolotl, Ambystoma mexicallum, and the newt, Notoptlzalmus viridescens. These effects were observed alone and in conjunction with retinoic acid, …
