A Cellular Model For Automatic Transport Systems., Yang Cai
A Cellular Model For Automatic Transport Systems., Yang Cai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study, the Transit Automata (TA) model, a Cellular Automata (CA) based spatial model, has been developed. It includes a set of cells, states, rules, events, and a system clock. In contrast to CA, a TA model fragments the problem space along restricted routes. All cells on the routes are treated as equal and controlled by rules. Like CA models, an initial configuration of a TA model can be embedded and can be dynamically changed during the runtime. Furthermore, user-controlled events and stochastic events are used to trigger the discrete events of the model. A TA model is a …
Correlation Of In-Facepiece Sampling Methods Using A Simulated Health-Care Workplace Test., Christopher Charles Coffey
Correlation Of In-Facepiece Sampling Methods Using A Simulated Health-Care Workplace Test., Christopher Charles Coffey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
For a number of years, it was assumed that the protection measured during a laboratory fit test was indicative of the protection provided by the respirator during actual use in the workplace. Beginning in the early 1980's, workplace protection factor studies were conducted to validate this assumption. These studies indicated that quantitative fit test results did not correlate with actual workplace protection factors. A fit test that indicates the degree of exposure is especially important when Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) exposures are involved. This study tested the correlation of fit factors to the subject's actual exposure using biological sampling. Six quantitative …
Development Of Ultrasonic Techniques For Detection Of Internal Defects In Highway Concrete Structures., Allakbar Afshari
Development Of Ultrasonic Techniques For Detection Of Internal Defects In Highway Concrete Structures., Allakbar Afshari
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The use of ultrasonic technique for detection of internal flaw and delamination in concrete structures is extremely difficult. In this research all traditional techniques were precisely studied and four new inspection techniques were developed which could be practically applied in testing concrete structures. The developed techniques are: (1) Detached Receiver Through Transmission technique(DRTT); (2) Direct testing of rebars in concrete structures; (3) Semi-Through Transmission Technique(STT); (4) Detached Receiver Pitch-Catch Technique(DRPC). All four of the developed techniques have low signal responses and resolution is critical. The detached receiver techniques have low responses because most of the signal is reflected at the …

Development Of Design Criteria For Long-Term Separation, Filtration And Drainage Behavior Of Nonwoven Geotextiles With Fly Ash., Mujahid Hussain Akram
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The long-term filtration behavior of six nonwoven geotextiles with fly ash from two different power plants was investigated. Five specimen preparation techniques were evaluated: Dry Method, ASTM Method (D 5101-90), Modified ASTM Method, Slurry Method, and Vibro-Prep. ASTM Procedure was modified. Vibro-Prep is a new technique to prepare specimens at higher density to simulate filtration behavior of nonwoven geotextiles in the field. In addition, a method was developed for testing of geotextiles under high hydraulic gradient (HHG). HHG method is an expedient technique to assess the long-term filtration behavior of geotextiles. The results of this investigation indicated that method of …
A Neural Network Approach For Implementing A High Dimension Reduction Feature Finder For Automatic Image Matching., Qiang Lin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the Counter Propagation Network (CPN) to implement an image feature finder for automatic image matching systems. This research concludes that the CPN paradigm does not appear to be capable of extracting distinctive features for matching complex images such as fingerprints. There are three possible factors explored in the document that contribute to this inability to match. These are: (1) Image Enhancement - Most of fingerprint images have certain levels of localized blur or smear, locally low contrast, or other noise. Currently available image enhancement methods are shown to not suppress these noises effectively. (2) Image Invariance - …
Vibration And Air-Resonance Stability Characteristics Of Helicopters Using Rotor-Body Dynamic Interaction., Senthilvel Vellaichamy
Vibration And Air-Resonance Stability Characteristics Of Helicopters Using Rotor-Body Dynamic Interaction., Senthilvel Vellaichamy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vibration and Air-Resonance stability characteristics of helicopters in forward flight are studied using rotor-body dynamic interaction. The rotor blade and fuselage are considered as flexible structures. The blade undergoes flap, lag, and axial motions and twist about the elastic axis. The air loads are based on quasi-steady aerodynamics and linear inflow model. The governing equations are generated by expanding the generalized forces in the Hamiltonian as a first-order Taylor series. The zeroeth and n/rev. vibratory loads are predicted directly in the fixed frame. This is expected to be more accurate than the force or modal summation methods. The blade controls …
Nonlinear Chemical Dynamics: Competition And Convection Effects In Reaction-Diffusion Fronts And Controlling Chaos., Jonathan Masere
Nonlinear Chemical Dynamics: Competition And Convection Effects In Reaction-Diffusion Fronts And Controlling Chaos., Jonathan Masere
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Competition and convection effects in reaction-diffusion fronts and controlling chaos are studied. In Chapter 3 we report theoretical studies of competition in which two self-replicating organic molecules compete for a common reactant. We found that the self-replicating organic molecule can give sustained reaction-diffusion fronts. This phenomenon is investigated by numerical solutions of partial differential equations that couple local nonlinear kinetics and diffusion. Reaction-diffusion fronts involving competing species are then initiated and the concentration profiles of the autocatalysts monitored. The results show that the more reactive species totally predominates over the less reactive species as its front moves ahead into the …

Development And Assessment Of A Standard Dissolution Methodology For Protein-Based Injectable Suspensions., Sunil Prabhu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To date, no standard dissolution methodology is recognized in the official compendia for protein-based injectable suspensions. Development of a sensitive dissolution method would have utility as an in vitro quality control tool and an indicator of associated in vivo product performance. Using the spin-filter as the dissolution device of choice, the objective of these studies was to develop a standard dissolution methodology for protein-based suspensions. Secondarily, the objective was to elucidate the steps which critically influence ion-complexed protein dissolution, and assess the magnitude of their effect. In Phase I of dissolution methodology development, studies of the device hydrodynamics concluded that …

Use Of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (Pvds) For Enhanced Soil Flushing., John Dante Quaranta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The concept of using prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) for remediation of contaminated sites with fine-grained soils is examined. The PVD system is used to shorten the drainage path of the groundwater flow and promote subsurface liquid movement expediting the soil flushing process. The use of PVDs in the current state of practice has been limited to soil improvement. The use of PVDs under vacuum conditions is investigated using study soils consisting of 100% sand and 80% sand/20% kaolinite mixture. PVD parameters evaluated included: Well Resistance, Zone of Influence, and Smear Effects. Applicability of the PVD soil flushing was evaluated through …

Costs Of Producing Transportation Fuel Oxygenates From Coal-Derived Alcohols., John E. Saymansky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Air pollution from automobiles is a serious problem in major metropolitan areas in the United States. It has been suggested that adding higher alcohols derived from coal to gasoline may help to reduce some of the more toxic emissions from automobiles and also extend the gasoline pool. The main objective of this study is to systematically assess the economic cost of producing coal derived alcohols for use in this capacity under conditions of uncertainty and to identify any relevant production and supply constraints. Four coal cases representing different feed-stocks and modem gasification technologies are employed in the analysis, and two …
An Accurate Navier-Stokes Solver With An Application To Unsteady Flows., Jason Richard Smith
An Accurate Navier-Stokes Solver With An Application To Unsteady Flows., Jason Richard Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is becoming an increasingly important tool for engineering analysis. In CFD simulations obtaining grid independent solutions without excessive cost is desirable. Hence, there is a need to evaluate higher order accurate discretization schemes (both spatial and temporal). Moreover, many journals require at least second-order accuracy for publication. Also, there is a need to maximize the efficiency of Navier-Stokes solvers. Efficiency is both a function of how the flow field is calculated and how effectively the discretized equations are solved. All of these issues are important in the emerging field of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) where very …
Operating Characteristics And Stability Of Multiple-Fan Ventilation Systems., Shumin Lin
Operating Characteristics And Stability Of Multiple-Fan Ventilation Systems., Shumin Lin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Augmented-system equations related to a subsystem of a multiple-fan ventilation system are established. It has been found that an augmented system has a unique solution curve and all the possible system solution points are located on the curve at the points where the augmented parameter has a zero value. The Quasi-Newton algorithm is then introduced and combined with the switching-parameter technique to form an effective and efficient numerical tool for identifying the solution curve and all the system operation points. Exemplary networks are analyzed using the new algorithm to demonstrate its superiority over all other methods available for analyzing ventilation …
Lumbermen And Log Sawyers: The Transformation Of Life And Labor In The North Florida Timber Industry, 1830-1930., Jeffrey Andrew Drobney
Lumbermen And Log Sawyers: The Transformation Of Life And Labor In The North Florida Timber Industry, 1830-1930., Jeffrey Andrew Drobney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The history of lumbering in Florida stretches from the small water-powered sawmills operated in Spanish Florida to the paper and pulp mills of the modern state. However, nothing captures the imagination more than the heyday of Florida's lumbering boom, which lasted from 1830 until approximately 1930. During this period vast tracts of land were stripped of their valuable timber under the "cut and get out" system and for the most part, these clear cut lands were left idle and either sold for as little as one dollar per acre, or returned to the state via delinquent taxes. Three themes underlie …

Ergonomic Evaluation Of Assistive Devices And Manual Methods For Resident-Handling Tasks In Nursing Homes., Ziqing Zhuang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Resident-handling tasks have been identified as the primary cause of back injury among nursing professionals. The objective of this study was to evaluate resident-handling procedures to determine which procedures resulted in less biomechanical and/or psychophysical stresses to those personnel performing resident-handling tasks. The objective was accomplished through an ergonomic evaluation of different assistive devices and manual methods for performing two resident-handling tasks that place nursing personnel in nursing homes at a high risk of back injury--transferring residents from bed to a chair and lifting residents up in bed. Twelve assistive devices and two manual methods were evaluated in this laboratory …
Integrated Reliability, Availability, Maintainability Cost Modeling For The Manufacturing System Design/Operation Problem., Yavuz Goktas
Integrated Reliability, Availability, Maintainability Cost Modeling For The Manufacturing System Design/Operation Problem., Yavuz Goktas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The level of production at a manufacturing system is limited by this system availability. Stage or component failures will decrease the available production time which in turn decrease the system throughput rate and increase the production cost. A problem that faces system designers is the need to adopt design and operating policies to enhance system availability economically to achieve their goals. This problem raises two major questions to study: (1) How to go about comparing different design and operating policy alternatives? (2) What kind of criteria should be used to pick a cost-efficient design and operating policy to satisfy the …

The Quantification Of Dynamic Parameters That Affect Eccentric Contraction Induced Injury In An In Vivo Rodent Model., Robert Gregory Cutlip
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Musculo-skeletal injury is a major occupational concern in the modern workforce. To date, the mechanisms responsible for muscle injury are not clearly understood. The objective of this research was to quantify the effect of dynamic parameters such as strain, strain-rate, number of repetitions, and loading cycles in muscle injury. A computer-controlled rodent dynamometer was designed and fabricated at WVU to facilitate the systematic investigation of eccentric-contraction induced muscle injury. An in vivo rodent model was used to study the effects of velocity and continuous versus intermittent loading on the rat plantarflexor group. The experimental results indicated that injury was independent …

Strength Of Elderly Farmers And Manually Adjustable Rops., John Richard Etherton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
If older working people (age 55 and over) do not have the strength needed to adjust the safety equipment they use, the consequences can be fatal. Also, there may be deadly results if safety equipment is not used correctly because the tasks involved in adjusting it are perceived as inconvenient and unacceptable. This study was part of a safety assessment designed to determine how to proceed in encouraging the design of manually adjustable rollover protective structure (ROPS) retrofits for older farm tractors. In particular, how acceptable are different locations and torquing requirements for threaded fasteners that must be loosened to …

Stress Distribution And Failure Mechanism Of Reinforced Concrete Column Subjected To Internal Explosive Charge., Yong-Suk Ro
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The concept of using explosives to demolish buildings and structures revolutionized the methods to eliminate the unsafe and unwanted structures efficiently and with minimum danger. The idea of demolishing buildings was introduced by CDI (Controlled Demolition Inc., Phoenix, Maryland) during the late 1960s, and the technique has become very popular ever since with numerous blasting agencies and construction companies opting to use explosives over conventional methods of demolition. Though the technique has been used for about a couple of decades, there has not been a unified theory developed to determine the quantity and type of explosive needed to demolish a …

Design Criteria For Tensioned Point-Anchored Resin-Assisted Roof Bolt Systems., John Charles Stankus
Design Criteria For Tensioned Point-Anchored Resin-Assisted Roof Bolt Systems., John Charles Stankus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Roof bolting is now the primary means of roof support in mines. Further, the beam building mechanism is now believed to be the primary mechanism by which roof bolts work. This statement particularly holds true for laminated roof strata. With beam building, the roof strata is reinforced by the installed tension of the roof bolt to a point where it will resist the effects of both vertical and horizontal stresses. Despite all the advances that have been made in the area of roof control, no precise criteria has been formulated to determine what combination of bolt length and tension is …

Characterization Of Mesophase Pitch Materials From Petroleum And Coal-Derived Precursors: Kinetics And Rheology At Elevated Temperatures., Pravin Maruti Khandare
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The mesophase pitches produced from petroleum (A240) and coal (HEXT450) have been characterized by several analytical techniques. The kinetics of mesophase formation from these two distinctly different precursor materials have been studied and an empirical kinetic equation proposed. Using the model parameters the petroleum pitch is found to have similar reactivity with respect to mesophase formation when compared with the coal-derived pitch. A new technique of determining mesophase content using computer-assisted image analysis has been demonstrated successfully and reproducibly. The technique is a useful replacement for tedious manual graphing and tracing necessary for area determination. A thermomechanical (TMA) technique for …
A Layer-Wise Theory For Linear And Failure Analysis Of Laminated Composite Beams., Youngchan Kim
A Layer-Wise Theory For Linear And Failure Analysis Of Laminated Composite Beams., Youngchan Kim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Based on a generalized laminate plate theory, the formulation of a one-dimensional Beam finite element with Layer-wise Constant Shear (BLCS) is presented. The linear layer-wise representation of in-plane displacements permit accurate computation of normal stresses and transverse shear stresses on each layer for laminated beams with dissimilar ply stiffnesses. For the accurate computation of interlaminar shear stresses, the layer-wise constant shear stresses obtained from constitutive relations are transformed into parabolic shear stress distributions in a post-processing operation. The accuracy of the BLCS is demonstrated by solving various experimental and numerical examples reported in the literature. The BLCS formulation is extended …

Experimental Study On The Hydrodynamics In The Riser Of A Circulating Fluidized Bed., Heping Yang
Experimental Study On The Hydrodynamics In The Riser Of A Circulating Fluidized Bed., Heping Yang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Circulating fluidized bed technology has been widely employed in the energy conversion industry and drawn a considerable amount of research attention to itself. The world-wide research effort on the circulating fluidized bed partially comes from the new emission standards which impose very strict limitations on the coal-powered electrical industry. In the circulating fluidized bed riser, a dilute, upward core in the center region is surrounded by a dense, downward annulus. The solid cluster formation in the annulus near the wall of the riser predominates the flow inside the riser and a transient interface of the core-annulus inside the riser exists. …

Development Of A Stable Tetrahedral Finite Element For Metal Forming Analysis., V B. Rachakonda
Development Of A Stable Tetrahedral Finite Element For Metal Forming Analysis., V B. Rachakonda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A nonlinear 'velocity-pressure' mixed finite element formulation for three dimensional rigid-viscoplastic analysis of metal forming problems is presented. It adequately takes into account the nonlinear material behavior and the large deformations that occur during metal forming operations. A ten-noded tetrahedral finite element with a quadratic interpolation in velocity and linear interpolation in pressure is used to discretize the domain of the deforming body. The salient feature of the formulation is the enforcement of the incompressibility requirement necessitated by the use of the rigid-viscoplastic constitutive law by modifying the constitutive equation to include a pressure variable and adding an additional constraint …
Interpretation Of Data From A Horizontal Heat Transfer Tube In A Bubbling Fluidized Bed., Ali Ihsan Karamavruc
Interpretation Of Data From A Horizontal Heat Transfer Tube In A Bubbling Fluidized Bed., Ali Ihsan Karamavruc
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Prior calculations of heat transfer coefficients for an experimental horizontal tube in a bubbling fluidized bed have assumed that the heat conduction through the tube wall is one dimensional. However, a comparison between one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) analyses and comparing them with experimental data shows that there exists a significant difference between 1D and 2D calculations. The analysis was accomplished by solving the unsteady 1D and 2D heat conduction equation across the tube wall numerically. The boundary conditions were taken from the temperature data measured at five different locations around the horizontal tube simultaneously. A correction factor …
