Programming Wizards: Generating Syntax-Free Conceptual Editors., Windell Hansford Goff Ii
Programming Wizards: Generating Syntax-Free Conceptual Editors., Windell Hansford Goff Ii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this project is to develop a generator for a class of syntax-free conceptual editors called "programming wizards". These editors provide a model of software that is especially suitable for novice software developers, freeing them from intricate syntactic details. The effectiveness of these editors is demonstrated by showing how they ease learning of component-based software engineering principles in introductory computer science classrooms. The notion of programming wizard generation is expected to be generally applicable for teaching other principles without the intrusiveness of particular specification / programming syntax.
Acoustic Signal During Hydraulic Fracturing., Jeremy Scott King
Acoustic Signal During Hydraulic Fracturing., Jeremy Scott King
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Well performance analysis using pressure/time data are historically collected over a time span of minutes and hours. Such pressure/time performance is controlled by Darcy type fluid seepage, and used to define the formation boundaries and permeability. A different pressure transient is used to determine the acoustic characteristics of the open flow passages of a well. A pressure transient can be induced by a sudden change in flow rate. The wave travels towards the casing perforations and back to the surface. The reflected signal contains the piping and fracture acoustic signature within it. The transient signal lasts less than a minute. …
The Fernow Experimental Forest: An Analysis Of Historical Change., Jennifer Ann Mccullough
The Fernow Experimental Forest: An Analysis Of Historical Change., Jennifer Ann Mccullough
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three sets of aerial photographs were employed to assess the historical changes within the US Forest Service (USFS) Fernow Experimental Forest in Parsons, West Virginia. The Fernow Experimental Forest was almost entirely clear-cut in the early part of the 20th century prior to its establishment in the 1930s. The USFS photographs acquired in 1956/58, 1972, and 1985 were the main source of data. The photographs were stereoscopically interpreted to identify mature forest, as well as selective cutting, clear-cutting, and areas that were regenerating following logging. The logging classes included areas of selective cutting, clear-cutting, and areas that were regenerating from …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
World Wide Web based Asynchronous Learning, a new concept in distance learning is gaining large scale acceptance among a number of universities and has become a basis for project work in various universities, colleges and even business enterprises. Asynchronous means that participants in a discussion need not engage in that discussion at the same time, a method to achieve high degree of interactivity among geographically separated learners independent of time or place. This project aims to develop such an Asynchronous Learning environment for laboratory learning containing interactive exercises with simulation experiences. Interactive exercises have been developed with multiple-choice questions and …
Texpert: Expert System For Evaluating Product Design For Worker's Safety And Health., Vikram V. Venneti
Texpert: Expert System For Evaluating Product Design For Worker's Safety And Health., Vikram V. Venneti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Today, there is an increasing emphasis on the safety and health of a worker. Optimum resources are invested to ensure worker's safety. Most of the regulations, and other measures as suggested by NIOSH, OSHA and other leading safety organizations concentrate towards the steps that a worker needs to take to use a product safely. Instead, if the product itself is designed to be safe, and if the manufacturer of the product knows about the product's safety before usage, it would reduce a great deal of wastage of resources. This research is an attempt to implement the above ideology. The objective …

Development Of Expert Systems In Heating, Ventilating And Air-Conditioning (Hvac): An Energy Approach., Raghavendra Srinivas Chillarige
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The recent rapid escalation of fuel costs, the instability of supplies and predicted future limitations have focussed attention on the need for a complete “re-think” on fuel and energy usage, with particular emphasis on energy conservation. Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning systems are the major energy consuming equipment in any industry after the Process equipment. The design and use of HVAC systems is therefore an important decision making step in Industry. The Evaluation of heat recovery, the estimation of heating and cooling loads form the basis for using available energy efficiently. The estimation of space loads is vital for the sizing …

Microstructure And Electron Emission Characterization Of The Initial Stages Of Diamond Growth On Silicon(100)., Vikram Lilo Tolani
Microstructure And Electron Emission Characterization Of The Initial Stages Of Diamond Growth On Silicon(100)., Vikram Lilo Tolani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopes have been used to characterize the microstructure and electron emission properties of diamond films grown on Si(100). In particular, we have focussed on the evolution of these film characteristics as diamond and SiC nucleate on Si(100) at 800°C by reaction with C2H4 gas under 5x10-5torr pressure. Under these conditions, there is possibly a brief period of 2-D layer-by-layer growth, but there is a tendency for the film to rapidly convert to a 3-D growth mode marked by the persistence of small primary nuclei ~400-600Å wide and ~5-6 lattice steps high. The in-air electron emission …

The Ecg Signal Processing By Adsp-21062 Digital Signal Processor., Limin Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
About 350,000 people die each year due to sudden cardiac death. The use of the Implantable Cardioverter / Defibrillator (ICD) makes it possible for an emergency defibrillation system to be always available to those patients that in high risk of sudden cardiac death. For this kind of technique, real-time detection and identification of arrhythmia automatically is important. Detection of arrhythmia usually involves complex algorithmic calculations, reducing the ability to provide immediate therapy. In this project, Analog Device’s ADSP-21062 digital signal processor is introduced as a candidate for the main processor of ICD. Cross-correlation, a method for detecting arrhythmias, is used …
Acoustic Properties Of A Two-Dimensional Fracture During Formation., Erika Echavarria
Acoustic Properties Of A Two-Dimensional Fracture During Formation., Erika Echavarria
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hydraulic fractures are created to increase the productivity of oil and gas wells. The extent of improvement depends on the formation permeability, fracture conductivity and the fracture geometry, specifically the fracture length. The cost of fracturing is directly proportional to the volume pumped and the rate of pumping, respectively depending on the amount of proppant and horsepower available. In the design of a well fracturing job, many critical decisions have to be made, related to the desired length, width and height of the fractures to be created. The design specifies the type of fluids pumped and the pumping rate schedule. …
Neural Networks For Control Signal Reconstruction In Non-Linear Systems With An Application To Aircraft Dynamics., Stelios Pantelis Pispitsos
Neural Networks For Control Signal Reconstruction In Non-Linear Systems With An Application To Aircraft Dynamics., Stelios Pantelis Pispitsos
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In recent years, general, commercial and military aviation has been plagued by the occurrence of several crashes, in which faulty control surfaces appeared to be the cause, or one of the possible causes. Typically, the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) begins its investigation by analyzing the wreckage along with the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR). In most instances this combination of information is enough for the NTSB to discover the cause of the crash, but unfortunately this is not always the case. From this the argument can be made that there is a need for …
Evaluation Of Biocidal Polymers For The Treatment Of Domestic Water Supplies: Application Of Polymers To The Surface Of Carrier Particles., Robert Matthew Taylor
Evaluation Of Biocidal Polymers For The Treatment Of Domestic Water Supplies: Application Of Polymers To The Surface Of Carrier Particles., Robert Matthew Taylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The performance of N-Halamine polymers in eliminating bacteria from water streams was studied in this research. Numerous experiments were performed to determine the efficacy of both pure N-Halamine polymer and polymer coated on carrier particles to remove Escherichia coli from water streams. The results for this research were inconclusive for a number of reasons. First, the polymer used in this research was not active. It lacked the correct chemical structure to kill bacteria effectively. Additionally, when active polymer was received, insufficient quantities were available to produce viable coated carrier particles. The ability to regenerate the polymer using bleach solutions could …
The Application Of Finite Difference Method And Matlab In Engineering Plates., Bohe Wang
The Application Of Finite Difference Method And Matlab In Engineering Plates., Bohe Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The biharmonic equation is used to model the deflections arising in two dimensional rectangular orthotropic symmetric laminate plates. The plate can be subjected to external perpendicular forces and one is interested in the resulting deflections. Various boundary conditions can be applied to the problem. The edges can be simply supported, clamped, or free. In this work, an automatic procedure is defined which produces the difference equations for each edge boundary case. The procedure is illustrated, using MATLAB, with numerical results for problems with and without exact analytical solutions.

A detailed liquid-helium-temperature photoluminescence study has been performed on a series of ZnSe epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The samples were grown at West Virginia University and include undoped and nitrogen-doped epilayers (with different levels of doping). The PL has been studied as a function of excitation wavelength, power, temperature and time. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Photoluminescence Excitation (PLE) were also performed. An ionization energy of 50 meV for the “deep†donor in a lightly doped ZnSe:N sample is determined using power dependence data. Heavily nitrogen-doped samples (≥8 x 1018 cm−3 ) provided evidence for a second deeper …
Studies Of Far From Equilibrium Condensed Matter Systems: Euler Buckling Instability And Molecular Beam Epitaxy., Dorel I. Moldovan
Studies Of Far From Equilibrium Condensed Matter Systems: Euler Buckling Instability And Molecular Beam Epitaxy., Dorel I. Moldovan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We use numerical modeling and scaling theory methods to investigate the time evolution of three types of condensed matter systems far from equilibrium. We study buckling instability of flexible chains of molecules, buckling instability of tethered membranes and Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) Growth Model. We find that the buckling of the flexible chain is similar to coarsening phenomena such as the spinodal decomposition. Evolving chain profile is like a wave with a wavelength λ(t) that grows, via coarsening, as a power of time. The evolving chain is like a rough object with transversal roughness w(t) growing as a power of …

The Connection Between The Current Penetration-Based National Ambient Air Quality Standard And Dose Can Be Considered Questionable., Michael T. Berakis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research examined the bias between penetration (as PM2.5) and deposition (as deposited submicrometer particulate DSP) due to the variability of ambient air particle size distributions. A size mobility particle analyzer and portable dust monitor were used to measure count and mass data at three locations in Morgantown West Virginia It was found that over 50% of the median diameters are less than 1µm. A correlation between deposition and penetration was found even though the PM 2.5 criterion is not a good indication of dose. This was due to a lack of variability in the measured distributions. Further research is …

A Distributed-Memory Implementation Of Kiva-3 With Refinements For Large Eddy Simulation., Aytekin Gel
A Distributed-Memory Implementation Of Kiva-3 With Refinements For Large Eddy Simulation., Aytekin Gel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In spite of the tremendous advancement of computer technology within the last decade, today's grand challenge problems are still beyond the numerical simulation capability of the most state-of-the-art hardware. Fluid dynamics problems involving the prediction capability for turbulent flows represent one example for such situations. Large eddy simulation (LES) is a viable alternative to direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent flows due to the fact that certain portion of the detailed small-scale information resolved in DNS is suppressed in LES technique in order to make the computational problem more tractable. However, even with LES, today's challenging problems require accurate schemes …

An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Microwave Regeneration Of Diesel Particulate Traps., Sriram S. Popuri
An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Microwave Regeneration Of Diesel Particulate Traps., Sriram S. Popuri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As the number and power ratings of diesel engines in both on-road and off-road applications are increasing, concern over the health effects of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM) is becoming more significant. One of the most effective exhaust after-treatment methods is to use ceramic traps to control DPM emissions. Periodic cleaning of traps (regeneration) is essential as the flow resistance progressively increases during filtration of DPM. However, the existing regeneration technologies for ceramic particulate traps are uneconomical and/or cause structural damage to the ceramic trap element. Microwave energy offers the advantage of selectively heating only the DPM, …
