An Analysis Of Small Stream Networks Located On Reclaimed Surface Coal Mines, Morgantown, West Virginia., Jocelyn Smith
An Analysis Of Small Stream Networks Located On Reclaimed Surface Coal Mines, Morgantown, West Virginia., Jocelyn Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A preliminary stream network assessment of impacts due to surface mining and reclamation was conducted through completion of this study. Four study areas, located approximately 7 to 10 km west of Morgantown, West Virginia, are within a 2.5 km radius of each other, and therefore share the same climate and geology. Two data sets were created: pre-mining and post-reclamation. The first data set was generated using premining topography, as shown on permit maps of each mined area, and Lubowe’s (1964) rules for mapping stream channel networks using topographic maps. Data for the second set were gathered through field mapping and …
Examining The Value Of Banner Ads: A Uses And Gratifications Study., Ashley E. Norman
Examining The Value Of Banner Ads: A Uses And Gratifications Study., Ashley E. Norman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As clickthrough rates for banner ads decrease and scrutiny toward online advertising rises, finding a way to assess the effectiveness of online advertising is becoming increasingly important. Advertising value is one theory that has been proposed as a means of determining what gratifications consumers receive from advertising. This study applies advertising value to the Web and studies how three banner ad designs – animated, static and content-specific – rate in terms of the three predictors of advertising value – information, entertainment and irritation.

The History Of Presque Isle And The City Of Erie, Pennsylvania: A Remote Sensing Case Study., Christopher Schaney
The History Of Presque Isle And The City Of Erie, Pennsylvania: A Remote Sensing Case Study., Christopher Schaney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Geomorphology of the Presque Isle peninsula in Erie, Pennsylvania is inherently unstable. Since its initial development 3,500 years before present, long shore drift has caused the peninsula to migrate east across the Long Point-Erie moraine. Erosion on the western shoreline has breached the connection of the peninsula to the mainland 4 times in the past 200 years. The harbor, created by Presque Isle, has been paramount in the development and sustained existence of industry in Erie. The natural shallow entrance to the bay was bypassed in 1827 by the construction of a deep entrance to the harbor. Success of the …
Thermomechanical Properties Of Molybdenum Alloys With Dispersing Spinel And Magnesium Oxide Particles., Dongxiang Sun
Thermomechanical Properties Of Molybdenum Alloys With Dispersing Spinel And Magnesium Oxide Particles., Dongxiang Sun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A number of silicide-based intermetallics are currently being developed for high temperature applications (>1000°C) in advanced fossil energy combustion systems. These alloys consist typically of Mo3Si, Mo5SiB2, and a molybdenum solid solution phase. The Mo5SiB2 phase is required for oxidation resistance. The ductile molybdenum solid solution phase provides toughening. However, a fundamental limitation to their practical utilization is the requirement to maintain the desired high-temperature mechanical properties while also achieving the necessary high-temperature oxidation/hot corrosion resistance. The key challenge of the alloy development is to find the right combination of good oxidation and creep resistance, together with the necessary …
Fragm: A Blasting Fragmentation Model Of Rocks., Sergey Victorovych Zagreba
Fragm: A Blasting Fragmentation Model Of Rocks., Sergey Victorovych Zagreba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fragmentation is a major concern of any blasting operation. Information on the degree and size distribution of fragments within a blasted rock mass is essential for efficient rock loading and crushing operations. Detailed literature review shows that majority of the previous researchers estimated blast fragmentation by considering four basic variables, i.e. rock properties, explosive properties, drilling pattern and bench geometry. However, when considering the effect of burden on rock fragmentation, simplified assumptions were made and its variability along the bench height was often ignored. In reality, because of the non-uniform burden along the bench height, the actual powder factor in …
A Normal Accident Theory-Based Complexity Assessment Methodology For Safety-Related Embedded Computer Systems., John J. Sammarco
A Normal Accident Theory-Based Complexity Assessment Methodology For Safety-Related Embedded Computer Systems., John J. Sammarco
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Computer-related accidents have caused injuries and fatalities in numerous applications. Normal Accident Theory (NAT) explains that these accidents are inevitable because of system complexity. Complex systems, such as computer-based systems, are highly interconnected, highly interactive, and tightly coupled. We do not have a scientific methodology to identify and quantify these complexities; specifically, NAT has not been operationalized for computer-based systems. Our research addressed this by operationalizing NAT for the system requirements of safety-related computer systems. It was theorized that there are two types of system complexity: external and internal. External complexity was characterized by three variables: system predictability, observability, and …
Adolescent Friendship, Relationship Quality, And Delinquency: Associations With Social And Cognitive Problem-Solving Performance., Lisa Swenson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Problem-solving performance of 132 adolescents was examined to determine whether performance was affected by individual (i.e., delinquency, gender) or contextual variables (i.e., friendship, situation-specific relationship quality). A friendship nomination procedure was used to pair individuals with a same-sex friend or nonfriend. Partners discussed and generated solutions for two cognitive isolation-of-variables tasks (adapted from Azmitia & Montgomery, 1993) and four social problem vignettes (two delinquency-related and two relationship quality-related problems; adapted from Berg, 1989; Owens, 2001). Following discussion of the problems, partners were separated and completed answer sheets for each problem. Participants then completed a delinquency measure (adapted from Mak, 1993), …
Ground Control Support Consideration For Pre-Driven Longwall Recovery Rooms., Stephen Cesare Tadolini
Ground Control Support Consideration For Pre-Driven Longwall Recovery Rooms., Stephen Cesare Tadolini
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pre-driven longwall recovery rooms can be used to safely recover longwall equipment from the current coal panel. The entry is developed and supported ahead of time so that the required combinations of standing and internal supports can be installed before the longwall face approaches. The combination of the internal bolting system and the standing concrete supports are critical for the successful and safe extraction of the longwall equipment. A combined support system that is too soft or too stiff can result in excessive recovery room closures or brittle failures of the concrete crib systems. Three-Dimensional finite element models, combined with …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This multidisciplinary dissertation examines the cultural anxieties associated with masculine identity in relation to both technology and nature in key literary texts and contemporary films of the twentieth-century: Ray Bradbury's “The Veldt†and The Martian Chronicles, Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, James Dickey's Deliverance , Don DeLillo's White Noise, Fight Club, American Psycho, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, and Dark City. Exploring the theoretical intersections of technoculture, ecocriticism, and gender studies, this dissertation analyzes the relationship between masculine identity and nature, as it is mediated by American technoculture. This relationship is marked by a discernible cultural malaise—a sense …
Framing The View: The *Western Landscape And Nineteenth-Century Narratives Of Expansion., Thomas P. Kinnahan
Framing The View: The *Western Landscape And Nineteenth-Century Narratives Of Expansion., Thomas P. Kinnahan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study traces the flowering of Western scientific exploration during the fifteen years following the Civil War. During these years, the empirical modes of perception and representation associated with Western exploration gained growing cultural authority and increasingly came to frame discussions of Western policy. At the same time, the systematic exploration of the West revealed the region in new and sometimes startling ways, in some cases prompting far-reaching revisions in the nation's self-perception. The stakes of these revisions became especially acute in the 1870's as the nation's frontier line flowed toward the alien landscapes of the arid West, prompting both …
Technological Evaluation Of Mineral Sequestration Of Carbon Dioxide By Carbonation., Xinchao Wei
Technological Evaluation Of Mineral Sequestration Of Carbon Dioxide By Carbonation., Xinchao Wei
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Increase in CO2 emissions has led to development of various mitigation technologies for avoiding CO2 building up in the atmosphere. One of CO2 sequestration technologies is mineral sequestration, a way of permanent storage of CO2 in solid minerals. This technology attracts the attention of many investigators to study and develop various carbonation approaches. The chemistry and thermodynamic studies show that mineral carbonation reactions with silicate minerals are spontaneous and exothermic. A variety of measures are needed to enhance the carbonation kinetics. The main minerals used for mineral sequestration are serpentine and olivine, which exist in vast quantities worldwide. Implementation of …

Effects Of Mutations Of The Iron-Sulfur Protein On The Function And Structure Of The Cytochrome Bc(1) Complex Of Yeast Mitochondria., C Edward Ebert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mutational analysis of the Rieske iron-sulfur protein (ISP) has provided useful information on how the ubiquinol:cytochrome c oxidoreductase complex functions to transfer electrons through the complex as well as transport protons from the matrix space to the intermembrane space. Mutations of amino acid residues in the conserved hinge region of ISP have resulted a general decrease of enzymatic activity by 30–70%. Recent developments in crystallography have helped show that the aqueous head region of ISP is mobile. Characterization of the hinge region mutants combined with molecular dynamics simulations of the X-ray crystal structure show that one reason for the conservation …

The goal of this study was to evaluate the relative success of mitigation wetlands in West Virginia in supporting vegetation, invertebrate, and wildlife communities. Eleven mitigation wetlands were compared to 4 naturally occurring reference wetlands. For all vegetation species sampled, species richness (no. species/quadrat; P = 0.035), evenness (P = 0.033), and diversity (P = 0.025) were higher in mitigation than reference wetlands. Mean weighted averages per quadrat were similar between mitigation and reference wetlands (P = 0.242). Differences in vegetation composition between wetland types were reflected through ordination using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). Both mitigation and natural wetlands met …
A Continuously Variable Power-Split Transmission In A Hybrid-Electric Sport Utility Vehicle., Miguel Mario Gomez
A Continuously Variable Power-Split Transmission In A Hybrid-Electric Sport Utility Vehicle., Miguel Mario Gomez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) have an infinitely variable ratio, which allows the engine to operate more time in the optimum range given an appropriate control of the engine valve throttle opening (VTO) and transmission ratio. In contrast, traditional automatic and manual transmissions have several fixed transmission ratios forcing the engine to operate outside the optimum range. Usually CVTs are used in small vehicles due to power limitations of the variable elements. Continuously variable power split transmissions (CVPST) were developed in order to reduce the fraction of power passing through the variable elements. This configuration includes a planetary gear train (PGT), …

A Multi-Fiber Unit Cell For Prediction Of Transverse Properties In Metal Matrix Composites., Rajeev Eluripati
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three-Dimensional Finite Element Unit Cell Models (UCM) have been extensively used in modeling Continuous Fiber reinforced Metal Matrix Composites (CFMMC). They are effective means to predict transverse stiffness or strength properties, as well as residual stresses that develop during the fabrication process of such materials. The boundary conditions of the unit cell are chosen so that all compatibility conditions are satisfied along its interfaces with the surrounding system of fibers and matrix. past applications of such Unit Cell Models neglect the effect of interactions with the neighboring fibers, as well as local bond stresses at the fiber-matrix interfaces. The various …
Two-Dimensional Numerical Simulation And Design Of Fully Grouted Bolts For Underground Coal Mines., Asmaa Mohamed Yassien
Two-Dimensional Numerical Simulation And Design Of Fully Grouted Bolts For Underground Coal Mines., Asmaa Mohamed Yassien
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The fully grouted bolt is a passive support. It occupied the greatest portion of the annual roof bolt consumption in the U.S. There are three components of the fully grouted bolt; steel rebar (bolt), resin annulus, and rock/grout interaction. Fully grouted bolts are loaded in three ways: axial load, shear load and bending moment. Moreover, vertical shear stress is developed along the grout/rock interface. Using ABAQUS 5.8, finite element models were developed to simulate the components of the fully grouted bolt and its interaction with the surrounding roof strata. Several models were conducted in order to investigate the effect of …

Three-Dimensional Numerical Simulation And Design Of Tensioned Roof Bolting For Underground Coal Mines., Yunqing Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tensioned bolts work in different mechanisms from the fully grouted resin bolts and are believed to be effective for certain types of roof strata. A 3-D finite element model using ABAQUS has been developed for the tensioned bolting design. In this model, the physical process of the tensioned bolting including entry excavation sequence, roof bolting components, bolt installation procedure and pre-tension is modeled realistically. Bedding planes and in-situ horizontal stresses are also considered in the model. A case study of a well-instrumented intersection of entry/crosscut was used to compare the results from the modeling with field measurements in terms of …
Highways Of The Mind: The Haunting Of The Superhighway From The World's Fair To The World Wide Web., Helen J. Burgess
Highways Of The Mind: The Haunting Of The Superhighway From The World's Fair To The World Wide Web., Helen J. Burgess
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation investigates the way in which the rhetorical construction of the highway has been haunted, first by narratives of promise and progress and then of decay and death. Highways are figured as technological wonders marking the advent of a better future in the 1939 World's Fair and the advertising campaigns of the 1950s, and then as wired-up networks of death in science fictional accounts from the 60s to the 90s. At stake in this project is the very status of metaphor in the analysis of technology. The highway is a compelling 20th-century metaphor that reveals anxieties we have about …

A New Model For The Assessment Of Nonpoint Source Pollution Using Gis And Virtual Intelligence., Seyed Razi Gaskari
A New Model For The Assessment Of Nonpoint Source Pollution Using Gis And Virtual Intelligence., Seyed Razi Gaskari
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Today, nonpoint source (NPS) pollution remains as the leading cause of water quality problems in the United States (USEPA, 1996). The most common NPS pollutants are sediment (i.e. total suspended solids, TSS) and nutrients (i.e. total nitrogen, TN). These wash into water bodies from agricultural land, construction sites, and other areas of disturbance. To develop the virtual non-point source assessment system (VNPSAS) model, monitoring gauges were selected for data extraction from West Virginia and also the western part of Virginia. A geographic information system (GIS) was used as a productive environment for data extraction and spatial analysis. The information for …

The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the interaction between the Innu of Labrador, an indigenous people in Canada, and the state since the middle twentieth century. The changing spatiality of this interaction can be understood through the analysis of the politics of scale. The scale of Innu social practices has historically been wide-ranging and fluid. Since the 1950s, the state has been increasingly involved in development projects on the lands the Innu have traditionally occupied. The state’s solution to the unwanted presence of the Innu was to settle, and therefore rescale, them in two settlements in the 1960s. The Innu’s struggle to regain …
