Design And Development Of Test Rigs To Experimentally Investigate Flow Loss And Heat Transfer In A Stirling Engine Heater Head, Pawan K. Yadav
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Stirling engines are attractive alternative for combined heat and power (CHP) systems, especially for high efficiency power generation using different heat sources. The hot side heat exchanger or heater head (HH) is one of the indispensable components of Stirling engines which transfers the heat from outside of the system into the working fluid. For development of a low cost, highly efficient and reliable CHP system, a novel HH has been designed and additively manufactured from Inconel 625. For the investigation of flow loss and heat transfer through this Stirling engine heater head, two benchtop test rigs were designed, developed, …

Rethinking Interaction: Identity And Agency In The Performance Of “Interactive” Electronic Music, Jacob A. Kopcienski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This document investigates interaction between human performers and various interactive technologies in the performance of interactive electronic and computer music. Specifically, it observes how the identity and agency of the interactive technology is experienced and perceived by the human performer. First, a close examination of George Lewis’ creation of and performance with his own historic interactive electronic and computer works reveals his disposition of interaction as improvisation. This disposition is contextualized within then contemporary social and political issues related to African American experimental musicians as well as an emerging culture of electronic and computer musicians concerned with interactivity. Second, an …

Blockchain For Trustful Collaborations Between Immigrants, Citizens And Governments, Chun-Wei Chiang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Immigrants usually are pro-social towards their hometowns and try to improve them. However, the lack of trust in their government can drive immigrants to work individually. As a result, their pro-social activities are usually limited in impact and scope. Although blockchain technology have the potential to solve the trust issue, people are not familiar with the technology and they have no idea why it is trustworthy. Previous research showed that the adopting user interface properly can increase people's trust in technology. This paper studies the interface factors that ease collaborations between immigrants and their home governments. We specifically focus on …
Study Of Biomimetic Micro And Macro Structures For Drag Reduction, Justin S. Schrout
Study Of Biomimetic Micro And Macro Structures For Drag Reduction, Justin S. Schrout
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The ever increasing demand for global travel coupled with increasing costs of fuels have prompted many researchers to study new methods to save fuel to make travel more efficient. One of the proverbial low-hanging fruits for fuel efficiency is aerodynamic drag reduction. Simple changes in the shape or placement of structures on the surface of different types of vehicles have been shown to increase fuel efficiency by reducing drag (e.g., add-on lower and aft wake fairings on tractor trailers which have seen a tremendous rise in popularity on US highways in recent years). Areas of interest in drag reduction have …
Optimizing Indoor Location Based Tracking Through Proper Filter Selection And Wireless Sensor Network Design, Matthew R. Bergman
Optimizing Indoor Location Based Tracking Through Proper Filter Selection And Wireless Sensor Network Design, Matthew R. Bergman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Indoor positioning system (IPS) is a topic that is coming up more and more for various reasons, such as allowing companies to track important objects using radio frequency identification (RFID) and employees with Bluetooth devices inside a facility. Geofencing is one of the biggest topics with IPS and is meant to limit access to a network in specified areas. Devices that incorporate indoor tracking are not initially precise when objects and employees are on the move. This movement requires devices to have a reliable filter for noise and package lose. For this paper, the comparison between extended Kalman filters and …
Hydrogeology And Water Management In The Arkwright Underground Coal Mine, Pittsburgh Seam, Northern West Virginia, Bryant D. Mountjoy
Hydrogeology And Water Management In The Arkwright Underground Coal Mine, Pittsburgh Seam, Northern West Virginia, Bryant D. Mountjoy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Arkwright #1 is a closed underground mine in the Pittsburgh coal seam near Morgantown, West Virginia USA. Arkwright shares perimeter boundaries/barriers with three other closed Pittsburgh seam mines (Osage #3, Jordan #93, Federal #1) and is partially overlain by flooded Sewickley seam mines, 25 m above it. This mine is significant primarily because it manages and treats water diverted from nearly 20 other closed mines over a 600 square kilometer area. This study examines water levels, pump records, and mine maps to describe the hydrogeology of Arkwright Mine. After closure in 1995, Arkwright and the adjacent northern Osage mines began …
Shale Characterization And Size-Effect Study Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And X-Ray Diffraction, Debashis Das
Shale Characterization And Size-Effect Study Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And X-Ray Diffraction, Debashis Das
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ground failure is a major contributor of the total fatalities in underground mines in the US. Underground coal mines in the Northern Appalachian region have weak roof rock mainly composed of shale and sandstone. Characterization of shale is indispensable for developing an effective ground control plan. However, this has not been done extensively. This thesis attempts to address this issue. It investigates the variation in mechanical properties of shale with variation in size. In addition, an attempt has been made to relate the strength of shale with its petrographic parameters. X-ray diffraction technique was used to estimate the compositional parameters …
Passive Wireless Temperature Sensing In Extreme Harsh Environments, Michael R. Comparetto
Passive Wireless Temperature Sensing In Extreme Harsh Environments, Michael R. Comparetto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As the technology in the elds of aerospace and the US power generation industry advances, there is a critical need for new extreme high temperature sensing / monitoring technologies to replace the current out-of-date sensing systems. As the operating temperatures of these jet and turbine engines continue to rise over 1000 C, it is vitally important to monitor the extreme high temperatures in these engines for system health monitoring and to achieve greater engine eciencies. We propose a new passive wireless temperature sensor capable of sensing these extreme high temperatures. The sensor uses an LC resonance circuit to measure the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 1999, Royal Scot Minerals based in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, USA went bankrupt and abandoned a 47-acre coal refuse pile, which currently presents environmental and economic issues. The primary objective of this problem report is to identify an effective approach to create a growth layer that establishes a sustainable vegetation on this pile. Using available data in the relevant literature, this report evaluates topsoil substitutes using three materials: papermill sludge, sewage sludge and lumber mill waste application for coal refuse piles. Like papermill sludge, sewage sludge reduces erosion/sedimentation by improving the soil water holding capacity and decreases the surface …
Efficient Wound Assessment System With An Rgb-D Camera, Xiang Gao
Efficient Wound Assessment System With An Rgb-D Camera, Xiang Gao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Continuous monitoring of changes in wound size, wound area, and volume, is key to predict whether wounds will heal on time. Wound measurement methods can be subdivided into non- contact and contact methods. Contact methods are prone to errors given the human intervention and it increases the chance of discomfort during measurement. Alternative methods, such as image- based non-contact methods, eliminate any discomfort and have good reliability for measuring a wound. However, existing image-based non-contact methods are expensive. This is because these methods build a 3D model of the wound using expensive devices in order to allow the clinician to …

Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Holes And Ion Beams In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre
Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Holes And Ion Beams In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Presented here are direct, spatially resolved measurements of the spontaneous formation of a steady-state, ion accelerating structure and an ion hole in the plume of an expanding, low- pressure plasma. Ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) measurements, obtained with laser induced fluorescence, are taken parallel and perpendicular to the background magnetic field in an argon helicon plasma. The parallel IVDFs show an ion beam with v ≈ 8,000 m/s flowing downstream and confined to the center of the discharge. The ion beam is measurable for tens of centimeters along the expansion axis before the LIF signal fades, likely a result of …
