Multifractal Analysis Of Memory Usage Patterns, Jonathan Browning Crowell Dec 2001

Multifractal Analysis Of Memory Usage Patterns, Jonathan Browning Crowell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The discovery of fractal phenomenon in computer-related areas such as network traffic flow leads to the hypothesis that many computer resources display fractal characteristics. The goal of this study is to apply fractal analysis to computer memory usage patterns. We devise methods for calculating the Holder exponent of a time series and calculating the fractal dimension of a plot of a time series. These methods are then applied to memory-related data collected from a Unix server. We find that our methods for calculating the Holder exponent of a time series yield results that are independently confirmed through calculation of the …

Cmos Fingerprint Sensor Electrostatic Modeling, Praveen Kumar Soora

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of Biometrics in personal identification is an important emerging technology in modern electronic society. Fingerprints are one of the most popular biometric technologies, currently used in majority of biometric applications. In recent years, solid-state capacitive fingerprint sensors which image fingerprints using Silicon CMOS Technology are gaining much acceptance in the market. This research work is carried out to quantify and explore approaches for achieving improved sensitivity of the capacitive imaging process through reduction of parasitic capacitances and sensor cell scaling for future generation devices. Evaluation of sensor cell and array geometries was completed using a commercial 2-D electrostatic …

Cigarette smoking is a risk factor in respiratory disease, cancer and cardiovascular diseases and other health problems. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of smoking on white blood cells and to assess the relation between smoking, red blood cells, nutrient intake, and newborn weight among pregnant WIC participants residing in Northern West Virginia. The study consisted of 110 pregnant women. Data for this study were obtained by in-person interviews at the clinical site or at the participants' home. The findings of the study indicated that the smokers, white blood cells and lymphocytes were positively associated with …

Use Of Wavelet-Packet Transforms To Develop An Engineering Model For Multifractal Characterization Of Mutation Dynamics In Pathological And Nonpathological Gene Sequences, David Lee Walker May 1999

Use Of Wavelet-Packet Transforms To Develop An Engineering Model For Multifractal Characterization Of Mutation Dynamics In Pathological And Nonpathological Gene Sequences, David Lee Walker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study uses dynamical analysis to examine in a quantitative fashion the information coding mechanism in DNA sequences. This exceeds the simple dichotomy of either modeling the mechanism by comparing DNA sequence walks as Fractal Brownian Motion (fbm) processes. The 2-D mappings of the DNA sequences for this research are from Iterated Function System (IFS) (Also known as the "Chaos Game Representation" (CGR)) mappings of the DNA sequences. This technique converts a 1-D sequence into a 2-D representation that preserves subsequence structure and provides a visual representation. The second step of this analysis involves the application of Wavelet Packet Transforms, …

This study was conducted to evaluate the lifting capabilities of individuals while wearing protective clothing in a hot environment and to investigate the behavior of the physiological stresses induced by the lifting process associated with those variables. In order to achieve the objectives of this research, two separate studies were conducted. The first part was an acclimatization and training program followed by a psychophysical experiment. Five male subjects, 28 to 31 years of age, participated in this study. They were heat acclimatized and trained for ten days prior to participation in the main experiment. The independent variables studied in the …

Acclimatization Of Older Men To Work In Heat., Edward Payson Daugherty Jan 1987

Acclimatization Of Older Men To Work In Heat., Edward Payson Daugherty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There is a paucity of evidence to support the hypothesis that there is no significant difference (NSD) between the rate of acclimatization gain and loss of young and old men as they work in a hot environment. Ten young men (Group 1 (x age 24.8 years)) and 5 older men (Group 2 (x age 64.4 years)) volunteered to complete a 39 day exercise regimen in an environmental chamber. Days 1-4 were the Baseline Phase (BL) (68-72 F{dollar}\\sp\\circ{dollar} dry bulb (DB), relative humidity (RH) 40%). Days 5-18 were the Acclimatization Phase (AC) (DB = 100 F{dollar}\\sp\\circ{dollar}, RH = 40%). Days 19-39 …
