Oyotunji Village: The Yoruba Movement In America., Carl Monroe Hunt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oyotunji Village, the Yoruba movement in America, is a history of the life of Oseijeman Adefunmi, (Walter Serge King), and the Yoruba movement he founded. Although this movement concentrates mainly on cultural nationalism, it has similarities to nineteenth and early twentieth century Black Nationalist movements. These similarities include their attempts to bring about change thru the rejection of American culture, the establishment of all-Black governments within America or Africa, the acceptance of African or Asiatic culture, and the rejection of the name Negro as a means of identifying their national origin. Adefunmi, the founder of the Yoruba movement, was born …

Collective Bargaining In Pennsylvania's Public Schools., Roy Evans Brant Jan 1976

Collective Bargaining In Pennsylvania's Public Schools., Roy Evans Brant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that collective bargaining is a viable alternative to unilateral policy making by boards of education in Pennsylvania's public schools. Corollary hypotheses tested were that teacher participation in some traditional management functions is beneficial and that a limited right to strike is necessary to make the collective bargaining process work. Testing the feasibility of the limited right to strike required an examination of the means of impasse resolution, the costs of strikes and the effectiveness of the limited right to strike

Comparison Of Cognitive And Participant Modeling On Counselor Interview Discrimination., William Dennis Zerega Jan 1976

Comparison Of Cognitive And Participant Modeling On Counselor Interview Discrimination., William Dennis Zerega

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The major focus of this study was the investigation of two modeling approaches (cognitive versus participant modeling) used in training students in counseling skills. Perry (1975) and Matarazzo (1966) both recognized the need for research on various counselor training approaches in order to pinpoint which of the procedures used contributed significantly to the learning. Mahoney (1974) stated that there is a specific need for comparisons of covert modeling approaches with participant modeling in order that the processes and efficacies of these two strategies can be better understood. A training study comparing cognitive and participant modeling approaches would contribute not only …

Harold Nicolson And Alfred Duff Cooper: The Historian As Politician In The Age Of Appeasement, 1935-1939., John Beecher Shorrock

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Several months after the signing of the armistice ending the First World War, a policy was adopted in Great Britain which aimed at the pacification of Europe. It was not new or altruistic. It was a policy grounded in the legitimate assumption that a peaceful reconciliation of differences among nations would prevent future generations from falling into a holocaust similar to that which had convulsed Europe between 1912* and 1918. It was a noble policy; mention of its name did not provoke illusions of cowardice, treachery, or betrayal. It was called appeasement,

The Shifting Of The Public Utility Property Tax., Robert Keith Perdue Jan 1974

The Shifting Of The Public Utility Property Tax., Robert Keith Perdue

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study consisted of a theoretical and empirical analysis of the property tax shifting behavior of the monopolist that is subject to rateof-return regulation. The theoretical analysis found that if the rateof-return constraint is continuously enforced, then the property tax shifting behavior of the profit or sales maximizing regulated monopolist will not differ from that of its unregulated counterpart. If, however, the regulatory constraint is only sporadically enforced, then differences in tax shifting behavior between regulated and unregulated monopolists can exist. Whether regulation is continuous or sporadic, however, merely allowing the regulated monopolist an after-tax return cannot guarantee that the …

The Effects Of Contingent--Noncontingent Structured Environments On Selected Behaviors Of Federal Youth Offenders., Paul Richard Thomas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Correctional treatment programming for juvenile offenders has been characterized as being without focus and lacking any clear conception of treatment goal or program objectives (More, 1973). The basic lack of widespread agreement on such fundamental assumptions as program goals, objectives, methodology, and definitions is further confused by not having an objectively derived data base from which different correctional programs could be derived or to which programming effectiveness could be compared.

An Economic History Of Southwestern Pennsylvania, 1850-1860., Thomas Peter Pavick Jan 1973

An Economic History Of Southwestern Pennsylvania, 1850-1860., Thomas Peter Pavick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The growth of manufacturing in Pittsburgh, and the growth of specific industries, cotton, iron, and glass, for example, have received some attention, but the basic economic developments in southwestern Pennsylvania as a whole have not received the same attention. Yet, in 1850 and 1860 over sixty percent of the population lived outside of the urban area around Pittsburgh. While manufacturing continued to grow, most rapidly in the Pittsburgh area, the people of the region as a whole had to deal with transportation, agricultural, labor, and monetary problems. This study is an attempt to examine the basic influences and trends in …

Factors Related To Children's In-Tune Singing Abilities., Robert Stewart Smith Jan 1973

Factors Related To Children's In-Tune Singing Abilities., Robert Stewart Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The growth of music education within the public schools of America and the philosophy which reflects its goals and objectives should serve as a measure of the desirability for correction of intonation within the elementary schools. If this is the philosophy of music education and elementary students are to develop an esthetic appreciation of music, a performance skill should be taught. This skill should aid in teaching a knowledge of literature and an understanding of the organization of music, which lead to the achievement of musicality.

The Kootenay Plains (Alberta) Land Question And Canadian Indian Policy, 1799-1947., John William Larner Jan 1972

The Kootenay Plains (Alberta) Land Question And Canadian Indian Policy, 1799-1947., John William Larner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This paper contends that the Stoney (Assiniboine) people of southwestern Alberta, Canada, have a legitimate aboriginal claim to areas in the North Saskatchewan River headwaters known as Bighorn and Kootenay Plains, located between the first range of the Rocky Mountains and the Alberta-British Columbia boundary. The Stoneys appear to have followed two routes during their eighteenth-century westward migration from southeastern Manitoba. One group moved southwestwardly to central Montana, turning northward into the Alberta Rockies; while the other seems to have travelled along the prairie-parkland fringe, entering the mountains west of Edmonton, with one band taking possession of the upper North …

Optimization Of An Electromagnetic 'Through-The-Earth' Communication System., Gene Edward Layman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This document reports a research effort directed at compiling the field theory, noise theory, and communication theory necessary to perform systems analysis and optimization of an electromagnetic communication system for use within a mine. The field equations and power transfer between loops placed in an infinite, homogeneous, lossy medium is examined and relationships between parameters are determined that provide optimum transfer of signal power. This analysis is extended to cover the case of an infinite, homogeneous, lossy half-space used to model the actual mining situation. Approximate solutions are found to greatly simplify systems analysis. Noise, bandwidth, false alarm rate, missed …

An Examination Of Nonverbal And Verbal Instructional Guidelines In Students Developing Abstract Understanding Of Technical Concepts., Everett Nelson Israel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

At the present time, coherent optical sources exist as discrete components rather than as fully integratable systems. Thus the most pressing problem in the area of integrated optics is the coupling problem: How to excite and, subsequently, recover optical signals which are processed in an integrated circuit. This input and output coupling must be done efficiently.
