Antitumor Activity Of Antimalarials In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Qun Zhou

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previously we showed that quinidine arrested MCF-7 cells in G1 phase of the cell cycle and led to a G1 to G0 transition followed by apoptotic cell death (Wang et al., 1998). The present experiments demonstrate that MCF-7, MCF-7ras, T47D, MDA-MB-231, and MDA-MB-435 cells transiently differentiate before undergoing apoptosis in response to quinidine. The cells accumulated lipid droplets and the cytokeratin 18 cytoskeleton was reorganized. Hyperacetylated histone H4 appeared within 2 h of the addition of quinidine to the medium, and levels were maximal by 24 h. Quinidine treated MCF-7 cells showed elevated p21/WAF1, hypophosphorylation and suppression of retinoblastoma protein, …

An Evaluation Of Double-Observer Point Count Techniques And Avian Habitat Use On The Camp Dawson Collective Training Area, Preston County, West Virginia., Greg Michael Forcey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Double-observer point counts are a new method of inventorying avian fauna that allow detection probabilities to be calculated for each point or species of bird. These detection rates allow estimation of abundances that are more robust than estimates derived from single-observer counts because detection probabilities factor in birds present but not detected. The combined double-observer (DO) technique involves two observers recording data together on a single data sheet. The primary observer dictates the number of each species that is detected while the secondary observer records this information; the secondary observer also notes birds that the primary observer did not detect. …

The Physical And Mechanistic Basis For Calcium-Atpase Regulation By Phospholamban., Jason Shawn Southall Jan 2002

The Physical And Mechanistic Basis For Calcium-Atpase Regulation By Phospholamban., Jason Shawn Southall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Ca-ATPase of sarcoplasmic reticulum is a 110 kDa integral membrane protein responsible for calcium transport from the cytosol into the sarcoplasmic reticulum lumen to promote muscle relaxation. In the heart, the Ca-ATPase is regulated by phospholamban, a 52 residue integral membrane protein, which inhibits the Ca-ATPase by decreasing the apparent calcium affinity of the enzyme. Phospholamban phosphorylation relieves Ca-ATPase inhibition. At present, the physical mechanism by which phospholamban regulates the Ca-ATPase is not known. The purpose of this dissertation research was to test the hypothesis that phospholamban regulates the CaATPase by altering Ca-ATPase protein-protein interactions that are important for …

A Helping Hand?: The United States, "Questions Of The Far East," & The Washington Conference, 1921-1922., David R. Buck

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

By examining in detail the conference records as well as a variety of personal collections and writings, this dissertation investigates the U.S. role at the Washington Conference, 1921-22, specifically the forgotten aspects of the “Questions of the Far East.” Historians have traditionally focused on the Five-Power Treaty (limitation of naval armaments) or the Four-Power Treaty (alliance in East Asia). So prominent has been this focus that some scholars have contended that the conference produced a so-called Washington system, which replaced the existing imperialist system and defined East Asian relations throughout the 1920s. Yet, the conference also produced the Nine-Power Treaty …
