Investigating Birds As Dispersal Vectors Of Litylenchus Crenatae Subsp. Mccannii (Anguinidae), The Nematode Associated With Beech Leaf Disease, Spencer Rock Parkinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Beech leaf disease (BLD) is an emerging forest pathogen primarily affecting American beech (Fagus grandifolia, Ehrh.) in North America and has been attributed to tree mortality of sapling sized trees within five to seven years of infection. Symptoms typically occur in regenerating American beech thickets sprouting from roots of trees killed by beech bark disease. Scientists first observed BLD in Ohio in 2012 and currently has spread to 15 states in the USA and one Canadian province. The nematode Litylenchus crenatae subsp. mccannii (Lcm) is highly associated with BLD symptoms, interveinal chlorosis and defoliation of leaves, and is currently …

Forest Management Alters The Quantity And Apparent Stability Of Soil Carbon, Dominick Cifelli
Forest Management Alters The Quantity And Apparent Stability Of Soil Carbon, Dominick Cifelli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Forest carbon (C) credit markets have emerged as a tool to mitigate climate change by offsetting C emissions through improved forest management. However, the models used to estimate C gains in response to shifts in forest management focus on aboveground C pools while neglecting the role of changes in soil organic matter (SOM) pool. This absence of SOM dynamics in forest C markets is concerning given that soil holds nearly double the amount of C compared to vegetation. In addition, most research on the impacts of forest management on soil C has focused on bulk SOM concentrations. This focus overlooks …

Three Essays On Misinformation, Mistrust And Their Influence On Public Health Policy, Eli Kochersperger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the first chapter I identify the impact of fentanyl exposure misinformation- namely, the erroneous belief that momentary, passive contact with the potent opioid fentanyl can be seriously harmful- on first responder behavior during overdose events, and on overall opioid-related mortality. I examine changes in opioid-related mortality following one particularly well-covered episode involving an Ohio police officer in 2017, wherein the officer appeared to experience an acute opioid overdose after touching what was believed to be fentanyl. Employing a synthetic differences-in-differences identification strategy, I find areas with greater media exposure to this misinformation exhibit marked increases in opioid overdose deaths; …

Analyzing Viability Of Blue Indium Gallium Nitride Leds For Use In Space Missions Using A Low Earth Orbit Cubesa, Bertrand Edward Wieliczko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The payload capacity of spacecraft is constrained by the weight of the craft itself, including fuel and electronic systems. The protective measures used to shield onboard electronics from the harsh space environment, characterized by high-energy particles and significant temperature fluctuations, can further diminish the available payload capacity. This thesis explores the potential of naturally radiation-hard alternatives to commonly used electronic materials, such as Silicon, to reduce the need for shielding and other protective measures, thereby decreasing the weight and cost of space missions.
III-V semiconductor materials, such as Gallium Nitride (GaN), are known for their inherent resilience to temperature swings …

Estradiol’S Role In Timely Puberty Onset In The Ewe, Eliana Gerardine Aerts
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In female sheep, the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus triggers luteinizing hormone (LH) to be released from the pituitary. Luteinizing hormone, in turn, acts on the ovaries to elicit estradiol (E2) release. E2 acts in a negative feedback manner to control the amount of LH released. The increase in LH release that drives puberty onset results from a decrease in sensitivity to E2 as the animal ages. However, the neural mechanisms mediating this change in sensitivity are not known, as is where in the hypothalamus E2-negative feedback occurs. In the arcuate …

Electronic cigarettes (Ecigs) have replaced smoking within the last decade as the preferred nicotine delivery system because of their advertising to the younger populations. Marketing has sold the idea that use of Ecigs are safer than smoking and this messaging has resonated with youth and other vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. Despite over 2.8 million children under 18 (Annual National Youth Tobacco Survey) deciding to vape, there is little information about what this will do to the next generation. Further, it is that same population that will soon reach an age when they will want to have children. There …
Using Critical Place-Based Pedagogy To Build A Bridge Between College Students’ Home Literacies And Their Academic Literacies In A Composition Class In West Virginia, Michael Vozniak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the use of place-based pedagogy as a tool for teaching for transfer in a college composition class in West Virginia. Although existing composition scholarship indicates that themed classes (such as a place-based class) are unlikely to facilitate transfer among the students, this is mostly due to instructors of themed classes not explicitly teaching for transfer. The literature suggests that the most effective way to facilitate transfer is to encourage students to reflect on how what they learned in one situation is similar to and different from what they need to learn in another situation. The aim of …

Teaching Cultural Humility Practices In Appalachia: The Value Of Conducting Conversations Based In Education, Bailey A. Riggs
Teaching Cultural Humility Practices In Appalachia: The Value Of Conducting Conversations Based In Education, Bailey A. Riggs
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent literature highlights the paradigm shift from utilizing cultural competence practices to cultural humility practices within the field of occupational therapy, and health sciences (Fisher- Borne, et al., 2015). The idea of cultural competency suggests that culture is unchanging, and individuals can master cultural knowledge. The perception of knowing culture can be perceived as an unwillingness to learn about culture. In contrast, cultural humility promotes the value of lifelong learning and introspection, encouraging greater self-awareness, reflection of personal biases, and recognition of power imbalances. This approach aims to better integrate educational approaches to serve diverse populations in a culturally affirming …
