The Germs Inside Me: Pediatric Patients' Conceptualization Of Illness And Regulation Of Emotions During Hospitalization, Sarah E. Buck May 2014

The Germs Inside Me: Pediatric Patients' Conceptualization Of Illness And Regulation Of Emotions During Hospitalization, Sarah E. Buck

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The transition into a medical setting can be difficult for children under the age of 18. Previous research has identified a child's capacity to construct accurate representations of illness, in addition to the construction and application of adaptive strategies to modify emotional arousal, as significant predictors of successful adjustment to a medical environment. Preexisting research has neglected to investigate the constructs of illness conceptualization and regulatory systems of emotions. Using a sample of 26 pediatric patients and 26 adult informants, the current study explored the complex relationship between emotional regulation and the conceptualization of illness among children, from the ages …

An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio May 2014

An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Historically nurses have been strongly engaged in the political process, however in recent decades the profession has moved away from the policy arena. Without political engagement, issues that are important to the nursing profession are not addressed timely, if at all. One such issue is that of full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Well over 100 studies have been completed over the past 40 years showing the safe and quality care APRNs provide independently. Numerous well-respected, non-nursing organizations support the removal of state laws that impede the ability of APRNs to practice to the full extent of …

Impacts Of Non-Renewable Resource Extraction On Shrubland Songbird Nest Success And Abundance, Ryan Douglas Davis May 2014

Impacts Of Non-Renewable Resource Extraction On Shrubland Songbird Nest Success And Abundance, Ryan Douglas Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Shrubland songbirds are a highly imperiled guild across much of North America due to wide-scale land use changes and resulting loss of shrubland habitat. Land management practices which produce early-successional habitat, namely field abandonment and clearcut timber harvests, have become increasingly uncommon in the eastern United States, and natural maintenance processes such as fires and floods are often suppressed. The Appalachian region is rich in natural resources; it has historically seen high amounts of surface mining for coal and is currently experiencing prolific development of shale gas. Both of these practices alter local habitats and the landscape, and it is …

Immune Related Gene Expression Of Parasite-Resistant Sheep During A Haemonchus Contortus Infection, Karen Nicole Sommers May 2014

Immune Related Gene Expression Of Parasite-Resistant Sheep During A Haemonchus Contortus Infection, Karen Nicole Sommers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gastrointestinal nematode parasitism is a top health concern for sheep producers worldwide as traditional means of treatment are becoming less effective. Haemonchus contortus is of particular interest because it feeds on blood, causing significant pathological problems in the host. Certain breeds of sheep, like St. Croix, are more naturally resistant to parasitism. However, the underlying mechanisms that result in resistance are not fully understood. The following two experiments evaluated qPCR differential gene expression during the first ten days of a challenge H. contortus infection from lymph node and abomasal tissues. Experiment 1 evaluated 24 St. Croix hair lambs and 24 …

Psychological Measures To Predict Serious Prison Violence, Allison M. Schenk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With 2.2 million adults incarcerated throughout the United States (Glaze & Herberman, 2013), prisons are crowded, volatile environments susceptible to violence. Prior research has identified demographic and criminal variables that consistently predict prison violence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of psychological variables to predict prison violence among 180 inmates from a state prison in West Virginia. The psychological variables studied included history of mental illness and results from psychological assessments (Beta-III, MMPI-2-RF, TCU Drug Screen II). Using a logistic regression analysis, history of mental illness and the MMPI-2-RF scale of Psychoticism accurately predicted violent inmates …

Glutamate Dysregulation In A Taup301l Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Holly C. Hunsberger May 2014

Glutamate Dysregulation In A Taup301l Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Holly C. Hunsberger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Individuals at risk for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) often exhibit neuronal network hyperexcitability, particularly in the CA3 region of the hippocampus, in the years preceding AD diagnosis, suggesting that aberrant network activity might contribute to the pathogenesis of AD. Recently, the microtubule-binding protein tau has been implicated in this hyperexcitability. Removal of tau in AD models overexpressing amyloid-beta (Abeta) or non-AD models of epilepsy decreases hyperexcitability and normalizes the excitation/inhibition imbalance. The exact mechanism by which tau produces hyperexcitability remains to be determined, but recent work suggests tau may mediate glutamatergic signaling. Glutamate is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the …

An Analysis Of Marcel Breuer's Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, Szilvia Kadas May 2014

An Analysis Of Marcel Breuer's Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, Szilvia Kadas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When Marcel Breuer accepted the commission to design the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, West Virginia in 1973, he saw the opportunity to create a public space for the citizens of Clarksburg, where individuals could become one community and would feel at home. The library building was intended to fulfill the hope of the city board to bring social and cultural welfare to the citizens of Clarksburg.;My hypothesis is that Marcel Breuer created a unique and intimate public library in West Virginia by integrating his characteristically domestic design elements in a public library. This thesis will demonstrate the domestic nature of the …

Sampling The Radio Transient Universe: Studies Of Pulsars And The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, Jayanth Chennamangalam May 2014

Sampling The Radio Transient Universe: Studies Of Pulsars And The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, Jayanth Chennamangalam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The transient radio universe is a relatively unexplored area of astronomy, offering a variety of phenomena, from solar and Jovian bursts, to flare stars, pulsars, and bursts of Galactic and potentially even cosmological origin. Among these, perhaps the most widely studied radio transients, pulsars are fast-spinning neutron stars that emit radio beams from their magnetic poles. In spite of over 40 years of research on pulsars, we have more questions than answers on these exotic compact objects, chief among them the nature of their emission mechanism. Nevertheless, the wealth of phenomena exhibited by pulsars make them one of the most …

Untangling Compact And Diffuse Ionized Emission Toward Galactic Hii Regions, Logan A. Hough May 2014

Untangling Compact And Diffuse Ionized Emission Toward Galactic Hii Regions, Logan A. Hough

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

HII regions are clouds of ionized hydrogen gas surrounding B0- and O-type stars. The ionized hydrogen in these regions emits both radio recombination line (RRL) and also thermal radio continuum. Diffuse ionized hydrogen, known as the 'Warm Ionized Medium' (WIM) also exists in the Galaxy. The WIM also emits RRLs and thermal radio continuum. Previous observation of compact \hii regions found two RRL components for many sources, one from the \hii region and the others from the WIM. By observing off-target positions sampling only the diffuse emission, we discerned the correct source velocities for 93 out of 116 HII regions …

Early School Leaving: A Narrative Inquiry Of The School Dropout, John E. Stallings Jr. May 2014

Early School Leaving: A Narrative Inquiry Of The School Dropout, John E. Stallings Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the field of education, student performance has become an integral component when determining the effectiveness of schools, levels of student engagement, and a measure of the learning that is occurring in schools. In particular, certain criteria have been identified as appropriate measures for monitoring the effectiveness of school systems, individual school programs, and teacher merit. Included in these specific areas to be monitored are graduation and or dropout rates. While these have become a part of the major focus of those monitoring the effectiveness of schools across the country, it seems that little has been done to investigate what …

Analysis And Interpretation Of Complex Biological Signal Transduction Networks, Holly N. Currie May 2014

Analysis And Interpretation Of Complex Biological Signal Transduction Networks, Holly N. Currie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cellular signaling is a complex system of biological communication that coordinates cellular activities via biochemical reactions. The passing of an extracellular signal across a cell membrane to intracellular signaling molecules is referred to as signal transduction. Signals transduced across a cell's membrane influence its function, and allow the cell to respond to its local environment. Within the cell, proteins are key responders to, and carriers of, the transduced signal. A class of proteins called kinases mediate most of the signal transduction in eukaryotic cells by catalyzing the phosphorylation of substrate proteins. The post-translational modification of proteins by phosphorylation regulates protein …

Presidential Rhetoric In Times Of Crisis: A Textual Analysis Of Speeches By Franklin Roosevelt And Ronald Reagan, Samantha D. Cart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While many scholars have examined the rhetoric of presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan individually, there is a gap in literature concerning crisis rhetoric specifically and little has been done in the way of comparing these two men. This study is a textual analysis of six speeches given by Roosevelt and Reagan during times of crises. Because both presidents were important in defining an era and considered great communicators, this study compares the similarities and differences of their use of presidential crisis rhetoric. Previous research shows clear patterns in presidential rhetoric, including the common use of civil religious words and …

Addressing The Elephant In The Room: A Descriptive Analysis Of Weight-Based Harassment On College Campuses, Lynnsie Doty May 2014

Addressing The Elephant In The Room: A Descriptive Analysis Of Weight-Based Harassment On College Campuses, Lynnsie Doty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

According to the bullying and harassment literature, over 50 percent of adolescents reported that they were targets of harassment at least once a month. A major gap within this literature is that most of these studies focus predominantly on adolescents and none focuses on older cohorts. To date only five studies have focused on college populations, but none focus on weight specifically as a factor. Although many individuals may disagree, weight-based harassment is comparable to harassment based on race and sexual orientation and affects victims just as negatively. Therefore, it is time to address the elephant in the room and …

Crowdsourcing Traffic Data For Travel Time Estimation, Chanukya Chowdary Gadde May 2014

Crowdsourcing Traffic Data For Travel Time Estimation, Chanukya Chowdary Gadde

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Travel time estimation is a fundamental measure used in routing and navigation applications, in particular in emerging intelligent transportation systems (ITS). For example, many users may prefer the fastest route to their destination and would rely on real-time predicted travel times. It also helps real-time traffic management and traffic light control. Accurate estimation of travel time requires collecting a lot of real-time data from road networks. This data can be collected using a wide variety of sources like inductive loop detectors, video cameras, radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders etc. But these systems include deployment of infrastructure which has some limitations …

Political Sophistication: How Values And Social Capital Contribute To Political Knowledge And Cognition, Jonathan C. Young May 2014

Political Sophistication: How Values And Social Capital Contribute To Political Knowledge And Cognition, Jonathan C. Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study argues that value types defined by Shalom Schwartz should relate to social capital and political sophistication in particular ways. Individual value types that emphasize "other-orientation" should positively relate to social capital characteristics that increase information flows which in turn will relate to increased political sophistication. On the other hand, it is expected that individual value types that emphasize "self-orientation" will positively relate to social capital characteristics that decrease information flows which in turn would correlate to decreased political sophistication. Using post-materialism as a theoretical basis and a survey that measures political knowledge and ideology, value orientation, social network …

Effects Of Culverts On Brook Trout Genetic Diversity, Darren M. Wood May 2014

Effects Of Culverts On Brook Trout Genetic Diversity, Darren M. Wood

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are a species of concern within their native range due to a historical loss of habitat, overfishing, and stocking of non-native salmonids. Road culverts have been recognized as an additional impediment to population persistence as movement between diverse habitat types has been identified as an alternative life-history strategy to maximize spawning and growth. Brook trout were genetically analyzed using a suite of 13 microsatellite loci above 7 culverts with varying levels of passability classified through a physical protocol. While most sites were not found to have losses in genetic diversity, populations above culverts with a high …
