Beyond The Bike; Identity And Belonging Of Free Cycles Members, Caitlyn Lewis
Beyond The Bike; Identity And Belonging Of Free Cycles Members, Caitlyn Lewis
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
A qualitative analysis was conducted at the community bicycle shop, Free Cycles, in order to examine participants’ identities and belonging within a community of practice. Semi-structured interviews with 19 members of the community and 50 hours of participant observation were conducted. Data analysis followed the grounded theory methodology of Strauss and Corbin (1990). Four research questions were proposed to examine the ways participants at Free Cycles identified with the bicycle-related practices of bicycle riding and maintenance, co-constructed the collective organizational identity, and developed a sense of belonging within the community amongst other members. The constructs of identity and belonging were …
Enclosed From All Sides: Reading Contact And Ambivalence In The Imaginary Al-Andalus Of Hrotsvit's The Passion Of Pelagius And The Song Of Roland, Briana J. Wipf
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Hrotsvit of Gandersheim’s The Passion of Pelagius and The Song of Roland have never been read together in terms of their shared engagement with the Muslim other in the Iberian Peninsula, known during the Middle Ages as Al-Andalus. This project is a comparative reading of the texts’ approach to the presentation of an imaginary Al-Andalus as a space of alterity. The texts’ emphasis on imaginative as opposed to accurate portrayals of Andalusian history and Islamic culture suggests their engagement with a process of Christian identity-building, where the “Christian,” as portrayed in each text, is defined against and in comparison to …
An Investigation Of The Relations Between Stress And Prospective Memory, Brandon T. Stewart
An Investigation Of The Relations Between Stress And Prospective Memory, Brandon T. Stewart
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Prospective memory (PM) is a future-oriented memory system that entails “remembering to remember” intentions, or to perform actions in the future. People spend significant portions of their day-to-day lives forming and acting on intentions, and the ability to successfully generate, retain, and complete these intentions has important implications for one’s daily functioning and quality of life. Another common human experience is stress, whether that be short-term, acute stress, or long-term, chronic stress. Despite the significance and ubiquity of both PM and stress, the research base documenting the relations between them is sparse. This topic area necessitates additional research to delineate …
Supervisee Role Induction Training To Address Resistance, Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, And The Quality Of The Supervisory Relationship, Michelle Orchard Backlund
Supervisee Role Induction Training To Address Resistance, Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, And The Quality Of The Supervisory Relationship, Michelle Orchard Backlund
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study measured the effects of a two-hour role induction training on the supervisory relationship, role conflict and role ambiguity in supervision. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline across groups design was employed. The study was done with master’s level counselors in training at the University of Montana. Basic findings were that the two-hour role induction training had no effect on the dependent measures.
Ultimately, limitations regarding instrumentation as well as finite time availability left many questions unanswered. The small sample size, extreme outliers and variable baseline averages clarified the need to refine future measurement and research methods that could expand our …
Understanding The Client’S Experience Of Counseling In Bhutan, Michaela Maureen Sacra
Understanding The Client’S Experience Of Counseling In Bhutan, Michaela Maureen Sacra
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Bhutan is a small Himalayan country experiencing vast changes as its traditional, Buddhist, collectivist culture meets Westernized culture in the process of globalization. The significant differences in culture and the idealization of the West has led to an increase in mental health issues in Bhutan, especially among the youth population. The government has recognized this and supports the growth of mental health professions. Currently, there are few mental health workers in Bhutan, but they have recently initiated a Bachelors-level counselor training program and have provided brief training to teacher counselors in schools to better address the rising problems. However, there …

Ground Fires: Essays On Land And Scouting, Matthew R. Hart
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Ground Fires is a collection of creative nonfiction probing the social and environmental complexities that marked the narrator’s long membership in the Boy Scouts of America. I grew up a Scout, part of a quirky, adventurous troop in a New England college town. After earning Eagle and graduating high school, I moved west, working for seven summers and a few more seasons at Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico. I led backpacking trips through the mountains and high desert, teaching teenagers about land I knew and loved, land that was changing fast. From bears to wildfire to challenging politics, …

Lgbtq-Inclusive Sexuality Education In Montana Public High Schools: An Assessment Of The Needs Of Health Enhancement Teachers, Andrew G. Johnson
Lgbtq-Inclusive Sexuality Education In Montana Public High Schools: An Assessment Of The Needs Of Health Enhancement Teachers, Andrew G. Johnson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
BACKGROUND
LGBTQ youth face many unique health challenges. Rates of depression and suicide are exponentially higher for LGBTQ youth than for their heterosexual, cisgender peers. Rates of HIV and STI infection are rising among this demographic. Comprehensive sexuality education has demonstrated the potential to address some of these health challenges. Specifically, it has been shown to delay the onset of sexual intercourse, and to reduce pregnancy and transmission rates of HIV and STIs among youth. Several studies have looked at LGBTQ-inclusive sexuality education from the perspective of LGBTQ students, but few have looked at this issue from the perspective of …
Fertility And Reproduction's Niche: Human Sexual Diversity, Samuel W. Austin
Fertility And Reproduction's Niche: Human Sexual Diversity, Samuel W. Austin
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Abstract: Biologically exploring the origins and forms of human sexuality is of paramount importance. Scientific research has indicated that homosexuality was linked to reproduction, fertility, and adaptive child caring strategies, traits that seem to display cross-cultural similarities. This suggests that sexual diversity may be one of human’s earliest adaptations. While most of the previous research has been on individuals of European descent, little research on Native American populations has been completed to test whether these patterns continue in their population.
The research presented here tests the Sexually Antagonistic Hypothesis for Male Homosexuality, Fraternal Birth Order Effect, and childhood atypical gender …
The Experience And Process Of The Working Alliance In Collegiate Athletic Training, Jessica Lealand Moore
The Experience And Process Of The Working Alliance In Collegiate Athletic Training, Jessica Lealand Moore
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
As healthcare evolves to consider the psychosocial effects of injury and disease on patient well-being, attention has turned to patient-provider relationships. Heightened attention to the significance of this relationship necessitates healthcare providers shift to a patientcentered model. One foundational model, the working alliance, emphasizes emotional bond, collaboration on goals, and agreement on tasks between patient and provider. Despite emphasis on a working alliance in healthcare research, conceptual understanding of the components of athletic trainer-patient relationships in collegiate athletic training remains unexplored. In this grounded theory study, six participants completed two rounds of semi-structured interviews guided by the research question: What …

Assessing The Character Of Place To Guide Geotourism In Montana: A Case Study Of Whitefish And White Sulphur Springs, Montana, Michael E. Tipton
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In 2007 the governor’s Montana Tourism Advisory Council adopted the Montana Tourism and Recreation Charter. Its guiding principle of geotourism pledged to sustain and enhance the character of the places that the people of Montana call home. How can the state’s efforts to keep this pledge be assessed when “character of place” has never been clearly defined or understood in detail? To keep this pledge, and chart the future of geotourism in the state, it was important to clarify what is meant by character of place and identify the full range of present and potential problems that threaten the integrity …
Visions Of Sovereignty: Tribal Sovereignty Through The Lenses Of Postcolonialism, Indigenous Film, And Visual Anthropology, Martin I. Lopez
Visions Of Sovereignty: Tribal Sovereignty Through The Lenses Of Postcolonialism, Indigenous Film, And Visual Anthropology, Martin I. Lopez
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Tribal sovereignty has been a topic of discussion since the beginning of colonization in America. Anthropological thought, especially postcolonialism theory, addresses how colonialism can be analyzed to gain a better understanding of Indigenous perspectives on sovereignty. Visual sovereignty, an example of Indigenous Film, is an interdisciplinary approach that can contextualize in specific histories and social interactions all while serving individual tribes, depending on which tribe the filmmaker represents. A film, for instance, can be edited in a way to convey Indigenous ideas of time and space and staged presentations of oral histories that are nearly impossible to display through written …
Do The Impacts Of Natural Amenities On Population Change Differ In New West Versus Old West Places?, Shefije Miftari
Do The Impacts Of Natural Amenities On Population Change Differ In New West Versus Old West Places?, Shefije Miftari
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This research examines how location-specific amenities affect rural population growth given demographic and cultural differences found in New West and Old West census tracts in the mountain west. In the 1970s, the United States experienced an unexpected turnaround in migration patterns as households began moving from urban to rural areas. Identifying different drivers of rural population growth is necessary for planning for and managing future growth in ways that optimize economic benefits while minimizing potential environmental degradation.
Using cross-sectional, specially constructed, spatially explicit data, this research identifies how determinants of population growth differ in New West versus Old West census …
Sms Parent Action Intervention (Span): A Pilot Study To Assess The Feasibility Of Using Text Messaging To Promote Child Health On An American Indian Reservation, Julia M. Malich
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Abstract
Purpose: Childhood obesity and its associated health risks are widely recognized as a major public health crisis in the United States (Johnson & Johnson, 2014; Proctor, 2008; Rogers et al, 2013; Vinci et al, 2016) and worldwide (Elías-Boneta, Toro, Garcia, Torres, & Palacios, 2015). Among children in low-income families, American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) children have the highest prevalence of obesity (21.1%) compared to other racial/ethnic groups (14.74% overall) (Pan et al, 2015). Parents play an important role in introducing healthy foods and encouraging physical activity in young children (Birch & Ventura, 2009; Lindsay et al., 2006; Natale et al., …
A Biogeographic Perspective On The Impacts And Importance Of Rodent Granivory On Native Vs. Invasive Plants, Jacob Elias Lucero
A Biogeographic Perspective On The Impacts And Importance Of Rodent Granivory On Native Vs. Invasive Plants, Jacob Elias Lucero
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
One of the most well-known explanations for the success of invasive plants in novel environments is enemy release, which predicts that 1) invasive plants are limited by natural enemies in the native range but not the non-native range, and 2) native competitors in recipient communities remain limited by their natural enemies. Despite considerable empirical attention, very few studies have tested these basic predictions, especially with respect to generalist herbivores. We tested whether invasive cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) has experienced enemy release from granivorous rodents – an important guild of generalists – using exclosures and experimental seed additions in western Asia (where …

A Phenomenological Inquiry Of International Service-Learning Experiences And Their Impacts On Post-Service Educational Experiences, C. Roch Turner
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Institutions of higher education are increasingly faced with global forces. Consequently, colleges and universities must internationalize in order to stay relevant when faced with global forces. One means by which post-secondary institutions are internationalizing is by offering students international service-learning experiences. During these experiences, students acquire intercultural competencies and a more in-depth understanding of the educational content delivered throughout their educational career. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the acquisition of intercultural competencies by twelve participants attending the University of Montana and Montana State University. Participants were interviewed, utilizing questions about the understanding of intercultural competencies, the acquisition of said competencies, …
An Investigation Into The Relative Importance Of Civil Institutions On Subjective Well-Being, Samuel Fleming
An Investigation Into The Relative Importance Of Civil Institutions On Subjective Well-Being, Samuel Fleming
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Poverty is not a material problem; in fact, it is a much greater problem, the problem of social, natural, and economic disconnect from the institutions of stability, wealth, justice, and well-being. When considering human flourishing, we must look beyond the material at “lives that are not necessarily morally good, but good for us” (Tiberius, 2006, p. 493). In the vein of Sen’s Capabilities Theory, this paper uses subjective well-being as a comprehensive measure of an individual’s life and circumstances examines how civil institutions impact an individual’s non-monetary welfare function. This paper conducts a series of regression models in an attempt …
Assessing Bicycle Helmet Use In College-Aged Individuals Using The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change, Julia Anne Hammond
Assessing Bicycle Helmet Use In College-Aged Individuals Using The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change, Julia Anne Hammond
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Traumatic brain injury is a serious public health problem in the United States, and cycling represents the largest category of sports-related head injuries. Helmets can significantly lower the risk of brain injury for cyclists of all ages. Yet, the incidence of traumatic brain injury as a result of a bicycle-related injury remains high. Due to consistently low base rates of helmet use in the college-aged population, this group is a prime target for research and interventions focused on bicycle helmet use behaviors. This research uses Prochaska and DiClemente’s Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of behavior change to examine bicycle helmet use behaviors …
Validity Of Clinicians’ Self-Reported Treatment Targets On The Monthly Treatment Progress Summary, Allison K. Powell
Validity Of Clinicians’ Self-Reported Treatment Targets On The Monthly Treatment Progress Summary, Allison K. Powell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Several decades of research have been spent identifying and testing EBTs, but there is currently very little research that examines the therapeutic practices within usual care. The lack of understanding in this area has been implicated as a factor which hinders the successful implementation of evidence-based therapies (EBTs) into usual mental health care settings. The Monthly Treatment Progress Summary (MTPS) is a measure developed to enable monthly tracking of intervention strategies and content within a statewide system of children’s mental health care. Although a growing body of research exists examining the reliability and validity of the treatment practice and progress …

Through the use of a survey questionnaire and descriptive statistics to analyze the collected data, this quantitative research study sought to determine whether there is a relationship between the use of email as a form of communication and the quality of the leader-follower relationship in organizations. Two electronic survey questionnaires were designed based on questions derived from three already existing and pretested research instruments. Data were collected from faculty (n=28) and undergraduate students (n=92) at two higher education public institutions in the United States.
The predictor variables included age, gender, level of education, frequency of email use, responsiveness to emails, …
Baccalaureate Time-To-Degree For Montana University System Two-Year College Transfer Students, Thomas Patrick Gallagher
Baccalaureate Time-To-Degree For Montana University System Two-Year College Transfer Students, Thomas Patrick Gallagher
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Two-year college transfer education has been promoted as a cost-effective path for achieving the baccalaureate, but increased time-to-degree could nullify this assumption. The Montana University System (MUS) recently expanded the mission for its two-year college system by adding the transfer function.
This non-experimental quantitative research study examined whether a difference existed in baccalaureate time-to-degree for transfer students from MUS two-year colleges. Three years of MUS graduate data (2014 – 2016) was examined in comparing baccalaureate time-to-degree of non-transfer students (n = 5,953) with transfer students (n = 730). Credit accumulation, GPA, associate degree completion, nontraditional student status, and two-year college …
Subjective Experience Of Empathy In Schizotypy Elicited By Literary Fictional Narrative, Christa "Anahata" Neuman
Subjective Experience Of Empathy In Schizotypy Elicited By Literary Fictional Narrative, Christa "Anahata" Neuman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The elaborate and multidimensional systems that are involved in the personal and subjective experience of empathy are largely unexplored. Nevertheless, when empathy is measured as a static trait there is considerable evidence that individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizotypy demonstrate altered and reduced empathic abilities respectively (Thirioux, 2014). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect that the context of reading literary fiction has on a portion of the process of empathic responding in relation to schizotypal traits, taking into consideration personal factors including current mood. A new measure for the use of momentary assessment of empathy was …
Moving Toward A Holistic Menstrual Hygiene Management: An Anthropological Analysis Of Menstruation And Practices In Western And Non-Western Societies, Sophia A. Bay
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Educating girls is not only their human right, but also proposed as one of the best investments for improving quality of life in developing countries (Montgomery et al. 2016, 2). Although menstruation is a universal, biological process, it is fraught with cultural stigmas and taboos throughout Western and non-Western societies. Menstrual-related absenteeism is believed to be a primary cause of missed attendance and early dropout rates, so the developing field of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is seeking to understand and evaluate what factors are contributing to these findings. After the analyzation of the current literature, a more holistic, nine-pronged approach …

Violence, Catastrophe, And Agency In Nepal: A Deeper Understanding Of The 2015 Earthquakes And Border Blockade, Kassandra D. Viers
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In 2015, Nepal was struck by two catastrophes. First, on April 25, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, struck in Gorkha. Then, in September, a blockade was formed that prevented goods from passing through trade checkpoints between India and Nepal. Both of these events highlight social suffering, a form of suffering that refers to the systems of oppression, unequal distribution of resources, and broad social structures that serve to keep certain people impoverished and subjugate. The earthquake caused the most damage to vulnerable people, people already suffering the effects of structural violence. The blockade was created by …
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Depressive-Rumination On Prospective Memory, Mark Primosch
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Depressive-Rumination On Prospective Memory, Mark Primosch
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Depression is related to prospective memory (PM) impairment. However, the research on depression-related PM impairment remains inconclusive. No study to date has taken into account the possible effects of depressive-rumination, which is known to impair executive functions underlying PM. The current study addresses this gap in the literature. Participants: Participants were grouped according to self-reported depression severity per the Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition (BDI-II). Fifty-five individuals with low (BDI-II < 8), 17 individuals with moderate (BDI-II 9-18), and 16 individuals with high (BDI-II > 19) symptoms of depression were included in the study. Method: Participants completed demographic and trait and state rumination questionnaires. Participants within each …
