The Impact Of Bullying Participant Role On The Relationship Between School Climate And Attitudes Towards Interpersonal Peer Violence, Miriam Rose Baker Reynolds
The Impact Of Bullying Participant Role On The Relationship Between School Climate And Attitudes Towards Interpersonal Peer Violence, Miriam Rose Baker Reynolds
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Positive school climate has been linked to lower levels of school violence and interpersonal conflict. Interventions that impact school climate have been shown to powerfully impact school violence and bullying prevalence. The current study used data collected from three middle schools in the same Rocky Mountain town. The survey tool contained items asking students about their behaviors when confronted with interpersonal conflict such as bullying, their attitudes towards interpersonal conflict, and their perceptions of their school’s climate. Significant differences were found between genders on attitudes towards interpersonal peer violence but no differences were found in the distribution of genders across …
Gendered Melancholy In Lolita: Reading Into Humbert Humbert’S Dolorous Haze, Joseph D. Brookbank
Gendered Melancholy In Lolita: Reading Into Humbert Humbert’S Dolorous Haze, Joseph D. Brookbank
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This paper argues that in Lolita, the narrator Humbert Humbert uses the subject-position of the great male melancholic in order to, at the discursive level, (re)perform violent acts of appropriation against Dolly’s body, subjectivity and representation. Humbert attempts to translate the loss and waste which he brings about into perverse sorts of gain; these gains relate to processes such as catharsis, compensation, redemption, regeneration, a sense of exceptionality, and aesthetic/erotic/artistic enjoyment. The project has an introduction and two sections. The introduction demonstrates how Humbert enters into the male melancholic subject-position in order to perform his sorrow in a way that …

Pragmatist Ecological Economics: Focusing On Human-Nature Relationships And Social-Ecological Systems, Christopher Aden Armatas
Pragmatist Ecological Economics: Focusing On Human-Nature Relationships And Social-Ecological Systems, Christopher Aden Armatas
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
I propose pragmatist philosophy as a companion for ecological economics, a research tradition with a focus on addressing sustainability issues and integrating ecological principles, economics, and the broader social sciences. Ecological economics laudable goals include balancing competing values, tradeoffs, and insights for more equitable decision-making. However, the field is built upon somewhat tenuous philosophical and theoretical foundations, which has resulted in a muddled body of literature, concerns about relativistic science, and questions about the future viability of the field. To address such concerns, I propose and articulate pragmatist ecological economics. Generally, joining pragmatism and ecological economics provides established beliefs about: …
Managing Just World Beliefs In An Unjust World For Victims Of Sexual Violence, Lindsey Chatfield Grove
Managing Just World Beliefs In An Unjust World For Victims Of Sexual Violence, Lindsey Chatfield Grove
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The foundational expectations for good things to happen to good people, while bad things happen to bad people, is referred to as the belief in a just world (BJW) hypothesis (Lerner, 1980; 1966). The understanding is that BJW is a deep-rooted belief that when challenged with injustice, an individual implements strategies in order to protect this core belief from shattering (Lerner, 1980). BJW has long explained victim blaming (Hayes, Lorenz, & Bell, 2013; Jones & Aronson, 1973) and a positive relationship with psychological protection for injustice to self (L Bègue & Bastounis, 2003; Lerner & Simmons, 1966; Sutton & Douglas, …
Treating Trauma Within Rural Schools: An Implementation Science Perspective, Heather Marie Halko
Treating Trauma Within Rural Schools: An Implementation Science Perspective, Heather Marie Halko
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
High rates of childhood trauma exposure (65-75%) are concerning given the negative outcomes associated with trauma-related symptoms. Numerous evidence-based practices (EBPs) have been developed to treat posttraumatic stress symptoms; however, schools often experience barriers to implementing these interventions with fidelity. Given the scarcity of service options within rural areas, this qualitative study explored factors that might influence the adoption and implementation of trauma-focused interventions within rural schools using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR; Damschroder et al., 2009) and the Implementation Outcomes Framework (IOF; Proctor et al., 2011). A semi-structured protocol was used to interview clinicians working in rural …

Methods For Analyzing High Dimensional Data With Applications To The Wearable And Microbiome Data Analysis, Quy Xuan Cao
Methods For Analyzing High Dimensional Data With Applications To The Wearable And Microbiome Data Analysis, Quy Xuan Cao
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Modern studies in medicine, epidemiology, pharmacy and other fields generate high dimensional data. We developed statistical analysis methods for two types of such data: activity and microbiome data. Specifically, reliable measures of the frequency, duration and intensity of physical activity provided by wearable technology were used in the analysis of activity data. Accelerometry-derived measures of physical activity were compared with established predictors of 5-year all-cause mortality in older adults, aged between 50 and 85 years from the 2003- 2006 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, in terms of individual, relative, and combined predictive performance. A total of 33 predictors of …
Understanding Tourism Within A Social-Ecological System: Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, Chelsea Leigh Leven
Understanding Tourism Within A Social-Ecological System: Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, Chelsea Leigh Leven
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Tourism endures as a major component of development strategies worldwide, despite a dearth of documented successes. Tourism failures arise in part from simplistic and reductionist approaches to sustainability and tourism. Successfully implementing tourism to support sustainable futures requires, at a minimum, a more holistic and complex conceptualization than tourism currently receives, including recognition of how human values shape a system. To achieve a more complex understanding of tourism, I analyzed tourism through a social-ecological system (SES) perspective using the paradigm of resilience thinking. Through a case study in Ometepe, Nicaragua, my research considered opportunities for tourism contributions to sustainable futures …
Fear, Power, & Teeth (2007), Olivia Hockenbroch
Fear, Power, & Teeth (2007), Olivia Hockenbroch
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Vagina dentata is the myth of the toothed vagina; in most iterations, it serves as a warning to men that women’s vaginas must be conquered to be safe for a man’s sexual pleasure (Koehler, 2017). The vagina dentata myth has been carried forth from ancient ancestors in numerous cultures all over the world (Koehler). It is one of many destructive cultural myths that guides discourses about sex and women’s bodies. In this paper, I explore a recent articulation of the myth, the 2007 film Teeth, and I argue that in this film, the vagina dentata is made more complicated. While …

The Impact Of Salient Naming Targets During Aphasia Therapy, Kathy Kay Molesh, Catherine Off Ph.D., Craig Mcfarland Ph.D., Jenna Griffin M.S.
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Translational research has led to aphasia therapies that incorporate principles of experience dependent neuroplasticity. The neuroplasticity principle of salience has received less attention from speech language pathologists than other principles, such as dose and treatment intensity. Incorporating salience in aphasia therapies has the potential to increase functional outcomes by addressing multiple aspects of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. This study explored the impact of salient stimuli targets on picture naming acquisition and maintenance for two individuals with chronic aphasia, following cerebrovascular accident. Participants were enrolled in a five-week Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program (ICAP) at …
Toward A Comprehensive Worldview Measure, Shailee R. Woodard
Toward A Comprehensive Worldview Measure, Shailee R. Woodard
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Worldview is an individual difference construct that has been linked to various behavioral and health outcomes. However, very little is known about how worldviews develop and how worldview beliefs, values, and attitudes coalesce into different worldview factors. One obstacle that has impeded research on worldviews is the lack of a robust worldview measure. The creation of a new, more valid worldview measure will aid in answering these important questions. This research project is the first step in the creation of a more comprehensive worldview measure. The primary aims of Study 1 were to compile existing published worldview measures and reduce …
Pressure To Support Meritocracy Vs. Nepotism, Linus Chan
Pressure To Support Meritocracy Vs. Nepotism, Linus Chan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Elite universities in the United States aim to admit the most qualified and competent students (meritocratic recruitment), but also prioritize admitting children of alumni via legacy programs (nepotistic recruitment). These two approaches to admissions are often at odds because the children of alumni might not be the most qualified applicants. What happens when people are forced to support an applicant who is meritocratic, nepotistic, both meritocratic and nepotistic, or neither? To examine this question, I had participants assume the role of an admissions counselor in an admissions committee tasked with picking one top student to admit. I predicted …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Introduction: Persons with aphasia (PWA) who participate in intensive comprehensive poststroke language rehabilitation programs make a variety of significant investments. While intensive aphasia programs and intensive comprehensive aphasia programs (ICAPs) are becoming increasingly prevalent across health care settings, patient perspectives of ICAPs have not been explored. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine patient perspectives about the experience of participating in an ICAP at the University of Montana. The primary research question of this study was: “what is it like to be a PWA in an ICAP?” Methods: Researchers used an interpretive phenomenological approach to conduct …

Service Failure Management In High-End Hospitality Resorts, Hunter A. Dietrich
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The purpose of this study was to better understand the interactions that occur at high-end resorts during service failures that guests sometimes experience during their stay. Both service-failure managers and guests who had experienced service failures during their stay at a high-end resort were interviewed to examine the service recovery techniques and timing strategies (such as the ex-antecrisis crisis timing strategy) that are perceived to be the best methods to correct service failures during a guest’s stay. In comparing the responses from service recovery managers and guests, commonalities were found regarding the best practices for ways to treat guests during …

This study investigated the lived experiences of clinicians who have culturally adapted Empirically Supported Treatments (EST) for American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) populations. The central research question for this investigation was: What is the experience of mental health providers in culturally adapting empirically supported treatments for American Indian and Alaska Native populations? A guided semi-structured interview protocol was used to interview eight participants. Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used to develop a general psychological structure representing eight essential constituents. They are: developing an understanding of cultural adaptation, focusing on building and maintaining therapeutic relationships, immersion and engagement with community, experiencing …
Navigating The Closet: A Mixed Methods Approach To Assessing The Impact Of Concealment On Psychological Outcomes For Sexual And Gender Minorities, James Michael M. Brennan
Navigating The Closet: A Mixed Methods Approach To Assessing The Impact Of Concealment On Psychological Outcomes For Sexual And Gender Minorities, James Michael M. Brennan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals suffer at disproportionate rates of depression, anxiety, and substance use, among other mental and physical health outcomes, compared to heterosexual individuals. Concealment of non-heterosexual sexual identity and/or non-cisgender gender identity may be a key contributor to these disparities. Many SGM individuals engage in concealment as a means to avoid victimization, or because of negative perceptions of their own identity. Concealment as a construct has been conceptualized as comprising cognitive, affective, and behavioral components, each of which individually has been demonstrated to have negative health impacts. Additionally, concealment occurs over time between the intrapersonal …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to show a relationship between an Acute and chronic workload ratio (ACWR) in miles run and weight lifted, ACWR in miles run grouped by z-scores, weight, age, years of collegiate XC experience, miles …
Saving Face: The Experience And Process Of Impression Management In Clinical Supervision, Ariel Heather Goodman
Saving Face: The Experience And Process Of Impression Management In Clinical Supervision, Ariel Heather Goodman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Clinical supervision plays an essential role in the training and monitoring of novice counselors. Supervisors are responsible for supporting counselor development as well as protecting the public from incompetent care. To fulfil their multiple roles, supervisors rely on supervisees to make relevant disclosures about their work with clients. This includes supervisees asking questions and disclosing mistakes and potential deficits. Supervisee impression management, defined as behavior intended to portray a desirable image of the self, therefore influences the supervision process. The following central question guided this grounded theory study: What is the experience and process of impression management in clinical supervision? …

Ecological Wonder In Annie Dillard's Pilgrim At Tinker Creek, Mary Morgan Beavers
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Through a close reading of Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, this thesis presents an argument for the ecological value of a sense of wonder in our engagements with the more-than-human world. The first chapter explores Dillard’s desire to see truly, like the Romantics, and follows her journey of attention into the natural world, analyzing her epiphanic, enchanting, and enlivening experiences of deeply intimate engagement with things both minute and massive. The second chapter considers how Dillard’s practice of close attention opens her perception in a way that allows her to see the full reality of the more-than-human world, including …

This document will approach the multifaceted concepts that arise through the study of rock art and the cultivation of culture and belief through vision. Through this document the audience will encounter conceptual ideas regarding belief systems, ritual, experience, cognition, sacredness, and space/landscape — and how these are all essential dynamics that take place in the processes that cultivate the Shoshone visual culture. This document will employ an anthropological lens on the mentioned subject matters, while also approaching these concepts with an interdisciplinary curiosity of how they intermingle; creating a cohesive experience that focuses on these processes which empowered these people[s] …
Self-Compassion And Fear Of Compassion As Mediators In The Relationships Of Childhood Invalidation With Emotion Dysregulation And With Borderline Personality Disorder Characteristics, Priyadarshani Florence Loess
Self-Compassion And Fear Of Compassion As Mediators In The Relationships Of Childhood Invalidation With Emotion Dysregulation And With Borderline Personality Disorder Characteristics, Priyadarshani Florence Loess
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
According to Linehan’s (1993) biosocial theory, the core feature of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is emotion dysregulation, which arises from emotional vulnerability and an inability to effectively modulate emotional experiences. Linehan posits that the transaction of environmental invalidation with biological vulnerabilities leads to the development of BPD. Those with BPD often live painful, chaotic lives, experience extreme emotions and impulsivity, and engage in self-injurious behavior. While there are treatments with demonstrated effectiveness, they do not work for everyone, and there is a need to continue to advance interventions. Self-compassion is extending nonjudgmental kindness to one’s self during stress, failure, or …

Decisions Leading To Inequalities In The Juvenile Justice System: Using Data To Predict Delinquent Outcomes, Inform Decisions, And Reduce Disparities For Justice-Involved Youth, Patrick David Mckay
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This dissertation focuses on how decisions are made in the juvenile justice system and what strategies can be used to make more informed decisions in the future, in three separate investigations. (1) To begin, eight years of initial detention decisions (N=26,128) were collected to determine what factors affect the arresting officers’ decision to detain youth at arrest. Findings reveal that the severity of current offense and prior offending history are the greatest predictors of initial detention. However, results demonstrate that race and the distance from a detention facility also influence these decisions. Non-white youth are more likely detained than their …

The Missionary Enterprise, Racial Conflicts, And The Transformation Of American Evangelicalism, 1945-1980, Timothy Paul Ballard
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This dissertation examines the history of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to understand the creation of a color-conscious theological discourse about racial identity and racial pluralism that emerged among evangelicals in the mid-twentieth century. Although a colorblind articulation of racial identity had wide currency among white and black evangelicals as a way to counter segregationists’ claims of racial superiority, it had little effect in challenging the exercise of white hegemony even among those who advocated for racial equality. The limits of colorblindness came to light as black evangelicals forged new approaches to evangelization among African Americans and white evangelicals challenged the validity …
Assessing The Impact Of A Yoga Intervention On Sleep In Female Veteran And Non-Veteran College Students, Erica Forzley
Assessing The Impact Of A Yoga Intervention On Sleep In Female Veteran And Non-Veteran College Students, Erica Forzley
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Early sleep research in the 1970’s reported that sleep problems were due to cognitive and physiological arousal (Kennedy, 2014; Ong, Ulmer, & Manber, 2005). Recent research suggests that in addition to arousal, maladaptive beliefs and attitudes contribute to sleep problems (Kennedy, 2014; Ong et al., 2005). Techniques to decrease cognitive and physiological arousal include exercise, relaxation techniques, and talk therapy (Kennedy, 2014; Ong et al., 2005. To address maladaptive attitudes and beliefs mindfulness and acceptance techniques such as yoga are recommended (Kennedy, 2014; Ong et al., 2005). Untrue beliefs about how much sleep is needed and a tendency to avoid …
Can Nonhumans Be Victims Of Genocide?, Kirstin Waldkoenig
Can Nonhumans Be Victims Of Genocide?, Kirstin Waldkoenig
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
“Genocide” appears commonly in critical animal studies literature and sparsely in philosophy to describe human-caused violence against nonhuman beings. However, such uses of the term have rarely been informed by relevant work in genocide studies, nor otherwise formally substantiated. This thesis explores what is at stake when employing the term and proposes a model for appropriate application to nonhuman contexts. Claudia Card’s notion of genocide as social death allows for the consideration of nonhuman animals as victims of genocide. Social vitality is important to the lives of some nonhuman animals and its forcible diminishment results in social death for those …

Sexual Dimorphism In Skeletal Trauma Associated With Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Keith Biddle
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Once known as “Domestic Violence”, Intimate Partner Violence, or IPV, is a problem as old as humanity. Even in our modern era, it continues to plague even the most “enlightened” or “advanced” cultures and societies. Much has been written about the issue from Sociological and psychological aspects and while there is some consensus in the medical field regarding the patterns of injury associated with IPV, that consensus has yet to reach the field of forensic anthropology. It is to this end that this study has been conceived.
The proposed project has three parts. The first part is a validation study …
